ANNUAL CHRISTMAS M&Ms CONTEST WINNERS -
The actual count of the Christmas Contest in the container of M&Ms was 1,660.
Taking First Place with his 1,562 guess was Rich Mukalian. Rich owns a 1987 Turbo-T and has been a customer of ours since 1991. Molly signed his SPID label at one of our Reunion events.
Taking Second Place was John Thuerck with a guess of guess 1,547. John has been a customer since we started in 1987!
Tying John for Second Place was Jim Jaggers out of Canada with the same guess of 1,547 submitted six hours later that same day. In the spirit of the season, Jim will also get the same prizes as John did for having the same count of 1,547. Jim had been wanting a Turbo Regal for 20 years. Finally got one about 3 years ago - a black 1987 Turbo-T. Prior to his purchase, he bought several of my books. When he went to make the deal on the Turbo-T he bought, the seller thought he had several Turbo Regals based on his strong knowledge of the cars!
Close on their heels with a count of 1,545 was Bill Furst. In the spirit of Christmas, we are also sending Bill a prize, since he was so darn close.
We had about 25 relatives come for dinner last Sunday, so I used the same M&M container to see who could guess the number.
PHOTO 1 - We show two different custom-made pen cases with matching pens. The design is laser cut on the maple wood. The photo on the left shows the maple wood pen case with the Bad to the Bone logo with the matching maple wood pen. The photo on the right shows the Buick Motorsport logo on the maple wood pen case with matching maple wood pen. See Rare Parts section as we have extras of the Bad to the Bone design for sale. The Buick Motorsport was used as prizes for the top two winners of this Christmas contest. We had these pen sets custom made for our contest.
THE NEXT CONTEST CENTERS AROUND THREE VEHICLES AT THE MECUM FLORIDA AUCTION -
This next contest involves three vehicles that are going to be at the Mecum Florida auction the week of January 6th through the 15th, 2017. You can go on Mecum’s website and go the specific day to see photos of each of the three vehicles for this contest.
The contest is based on these three vehicles -
A - The 15,000-mile Grand National is listed for Thursday, January 12th Lot T-126.
B - The Morris Mini Minor Tow Truck is listed for Friday, January 13th Lot F-132.
C - The GNX 547 is also listed on Friday, January 13th Lot F-155.
Two of the vehicles have no reserve price. The GNX 547, Lot F-155, is the only one that does have a reserve.
Your guess must be the closest UNDER the posted selling price.
If the GNX 547 does not reach the reserve, we are looking for the guess closest to the last bid.
I call this the triple billing contest.
You can win one, two or all three contests.
In each case your guess must be the closest under the actual posted selling price.
HERE ARE THE RULES -
Your one single guess for each of the three vehicles must be in one single email directly to me [email protected]
Copy and paste the three cars into a single email. I have them listed as A, B, and C. Note your guess next to each letter.
A - $
B - $
C - $
Reference Mecum Auction Contest in email reference line.
You must email me direct [email protected] your one guess for each of the three noted vehicles, GNX 547, 1987 Grand National with 15,000 original miles, and the 1961 Morris Mini Minor Tow Truck.
Your email guesses must be emailed to me no later than Sunday, January 8th, 2017, 6 pm eastern time.
In case of a tie, the earliest received email entry is the winner. With three different chances to win prizes, we are only awarding the first entry closest to the actual price the vehicle sells for or the posted price if it’s the GNX which has a reserve. In other words, there is no second place!
The winner in each category receives a Kirban Performance Products Gift Certificate for $50 good against any of our website parts. Plus a custom-made maple wood pen case (see Photo 1 in this issue).
If the same winner has the closest guess for two of the vehicles they get two different maple wood pen with pen case, $75 certificate good for any of our website parts.
The big prize is if the same person guesses the closest on all three vehicles - besides getting the two different pen and cases $100 certificate for any of our website parts, that winner will also get an original GNX book still factory sealed in the box. The GNX book is valued at over $150!
Contest is open to everyone except those connected to any of the various Turbo Regal companies. Let the games begin! Good luck players!
MY REASONING FOR THE TRIPLE CONTEST-
Obviously, the top pick for the contest is GNX 547. This should set a benchmark for GNX values. I chose the 15,000-mile Grand National hardtop since it has no reserve and would give a fairly good indication as to the values of nice original low-mileage Grand Nationals. There are at least four other Grand Nationals also at this same auction, although not nearly as nice. My third pick was basically for fun and the fact I used to own a towing business and this is a cute novelty vehicle. If both the GNX and Grand National garner high prices, it gives all of us Turbo Regal owners a real boost in value. This is especially true, since GNX #547 has recently gotten a lot of ink in magazines and internet articles.
BREAKING NEWS ON THE UPCOMING MECUM FLORIDA AUCTION -
I just got word that Jason has booked a flight to be at that Mecum Auction in Florida and will have a full report on the three vehicles for our contest.
Jason is taking a break from the brutal Canadian cold weather to spend a few days in the sunshine state! His report will be published in the Inner Circle after the contest has ended.
1987 TURBO REGAL ORIGINAL GREY SEAT MATERIAL -
Probably the next most popular interior seat material would be grey cloth used in the 1987 Turbo Regals. This grey material would be correct for all the WE4 cars and those Turbo-Ts with the solid grey interiors. Grey is also one of the colors that can easily show dirt and the color can fade quickly over the years.
I just got in two sections of this rare original grey material. It is called “Gray Empress” (see Rare Parts section for size and prices). This grey is dated and has the C & A logo on it. It is the real “stuff”. I am trying to get more of this original grey material. One reason original cloth material from Collins and Aikman is difficult to find today, is because the company closed its doors years ago.
PHOTO 2 - We show an original used 1987 Turbo-T grey upper door cloth against a section of the new original grey empress material I just received. You can clearly see the difference of new (bottom of photo) verses 30-year-old (top of photo) material. You can even see how dark the original material is that was under where the plastic molding was just above the rectangle square hole for the window switch.
A CHRISTMAS STORY - ANGEL IN DENIM
This story was written by my middle sister Diane in 2011. It goes like this:
If angels could drive, what would they drive? A flashy Lexus? A Volkswagen Beetle? A sporty SUV? Well, they have wings to fly, so they really don’t need a four wheel drive, but if I had to wager a bet, I’d bet that angels drive tow trucks. Let me tell you why.
I was pretty young, yet old enough to remember - maybe I was ten or eleven. It was a snowy stormy wintry night. I don’t know why I was riding with my older brother Dennis. Maybe it was close to Christmas and he wanted to show me the lights. All I knew was we were going somewhere and he invited me to come. That made me feel special.
Looking back now as an adult, I wonder why my mother even let me go, given the condition of the roads. I guess it showed how much she trusted my big brother to keep me safe.
Like I said, I don’t remember where we were going, or why; but it was probably in the Christmas season. And it was at night. We headed north from home on Huntingdon Pike, Route 232, through Bethayres. As we approached the center of historic Bryn Athyn, Dennis saw a car in the ditch on our side of the road. Without a second thought he pulled over his old blue tow truck in front of the car. Wearing only a short blue denim jacket and rubbing his hands together for lack of gloves, he approached the driver. It was a woman. Remember this was the late ‘60s and long before cell phones. Dennis offered to pull her out, refusing to take any remuneration for it. I imagine she believed she’d seen an angel.
That’s why I think angels drive tow trucks. And sometimes wear only denim jackets even on the bitterest cold snowy nights.

Soli Deo Gloria
Diane Buchanan
PHOT0 3 - We show two photos of my first tow truck with my three younger sisters. These two photos were taken in 1968. The other photo was taken several years later in front of my parents’ Christmas tree. Duane was the suit-and-tie kid growing up! Photo shows me, Doreen, Diane (who wrote this story), Duane, and Dawn the youngest. That Chevy blue tow truck was my first tow truck and had a Manley hand winch. Eventually, by the mid-1970s, we would have three tow trucks on the road towing for several of the major new car dealers in our area. We would operate this business out of our house for about 20 years.
CHRISTMAS MEMORIES FROM MY YOUTH -
Growing up, my parents never did much Christmas decorations besides having a real cut tree, except for a three-foot-high plastic Frosty the Snowman that lit up with a single bulb. I can remember Frosty at Christmas as far back as when I was about 7 years old. Every December Frosty would came out of his original tattered brown box that was stored on a shelf in the basement of our home. He would emerge and light up the living room for a few short weeks every December.
This tradition was repeated every Christmas until my parents sold the homestead around 1999. At that time, all five of us kids were asked what we wanted from the house before things got sold, thrown out, packed up, or given away. I knew immediately what I wanted. The problem was my oldest sister Doreen (who is seven years younger than me) also wanted Frosty. I won because I made my request known first! The old adage is true, “He who hesitates is lost.” The unwritten plan is, if my sister out lives me, she gets Frosty. Otherwise, Frosty gets passed down to our son.
Ever since then, Frosty stays out all year round in my home office and as Christmas draws closer, he moves to the living room and has a special place on the wall for all to see. Frosty’s expression never changes. He no longer lights up for fear of a fire and has a few age cracks, but then again don’t we all?
PHOTO 4 - The top left photo is a photo of my Mom next to Frosty when Frosty was quite young. The lower left photo shows my Dad and the original box Frosty was packed in every year. His writing on the box shows he made repairs to the box January 6th, 1980, almost 27 years ago! The middle photo shows my oldest sister Doreen, Frosty and our Mom. This photo is probably about 16-20 years ago taken in our living room at our old house on Sugar Bottom Road. The right photo was taken just six days ago and shows Frosty in our living room.

A RUN DOWN ON VARIOUS COLLECTIBLE G-BODY MODELS -
I thought about this the other day. The G-body model refers to Buick Regals, Chevrolet Monte Carlos, Oldsmobile Cutlass, and the Pontiac Grand Prix models.
Chevrolet basically brought two collectible models to the market - the SS and the Aero Coupe.
Oldsmobile also brought two models to the collectible market - the 442 and the Hurst Olds models.
Pontiac brought the least collectible models in the G-body format to the market - the Pontiac 2 plus 2 Aero Coupe.
Buick, thank goodness, outshined all the other G-body models by bringing to the collectible market the Turbo Limited, T-Type, Turbo-T, WE 4, Grand National, and the GNX. For this, we are all grateful!
Although Pontiac dropped the ball with only a minor G-body collectable entry, they started the muscle car craze with the GTO option in 1964 on the A-body platform. That first year they expected to sell 5,000 GTOs and instead sold 32,000 GTOs!
I got lucky and backed a winner in business both times, first with the GTO and later the Turbo Regal! I bought our first GTO - a 1964 model - after returning from Vietnam in 1967.
HURST HATCH T-TOPS UPDATE -
Rick Fink responded on the Hurst Hatch article. In 1975 he was a service manager at a local Oldsmobile Dealership. He recalls a blue Oldsmobile CS Coupe powered by a 455 power plant and having Hurst Hatch T-Tops. A few days after the owner took delivery it was back for water leaks and rattles. After numerous unsuccessful service appointments, tech’s from the Zone office were sent to the dealership to supervise corrective measures. They taught the mechanics to use spray foam insulation between the roof supports to quiet the cut roof, which was flexing.
After all the man hours were spent, I don’t think the dealership made a profit. The owner did keep the car!
SPEAKING OF T-TOPS -
The man that created the T-Tops and holds the patent dated in 1951 is Gordon Buehrig. This guy has one of the most impressive automotive resumes I have ever read. At just 25-years-old he was the chief body designer for Duesenberg where he designed the J model Duesenberg. A few years later, jumped over to Auburn and designed the famous 1935 model 851 Boattail Speedster. Later he designed the distinctive Cord 810/812 models. In 1949 he joined Ford and did the 1951 Ford Victoria coupe and the 1956 Continental Mark II.
He died in 1990. That would have been one autograph to get! What strikes me is the fact that the T-Tops design was invented back in 1951 yet did not gain popularity until the 1970s. Off course, it was hugely popular on the G-body Regals and G-body Monte Carlos. I think all of us would agree the T-Tops creation was not near the top of his personal automotive accomplishments!
INTERESTING TIDBIT ON OLD AGE -
The oldest person currently in the world is a woman who is 117 years old. The oldest American is also a woman and she is a youngster at 114 years old.
Of the 46 oldest people in the entire world, 44 are woman. Men are the remaining two. Based on that fact, you probably have a better chance winning your state’s lottery than being part of that exclusive club of 110 years old or older. Kirk Douglas has a chance as he just turned 100 a few weeks back. Let’s hope he gets into that exclusive club!
MORE USELESS TRIVIA -
In just a few short years of automotive production, South Korea has started to make some pretty nice cars. One model in particular, is geared to the luxury car market.
In the newspaper write up about the “Genesis 90” as it is called, it talks about having triple seal windows and when you gently shut the doors they sort of suck themselves to the closed position. Too bad that technology was not put into use on our Turbo Regals! I know I would have paid extra for that feature!
SPEAKING OF SOUTH KOREA
When John Glenn was a fighter pilot in the Korean War, his wingman was Ted Willams. Ted Williams was baseball’s last 400 hitter. He had been called back into service. What a winning combination.
UPDATE ON ORIGINAL BLACK AND GREY PALLEX SEAT MATERIAL -
I now own all the grey pallex material that this source had available. The one main section of grey pallex I is about 7 yards in length as I have sold some of this already.
I also made a deal for all the black pallex material from this source. It is believed to be between 12 and 15 yards total. I did get one yard in the other day, which I sold in minutes. It is the real stuff. You would be amazed at just how black this original black pallex material is - because of no sun exposure! Because it is black, it is next to impossible to read the words and date on the back, but it is the real stuff! I can’t price the black pallex material until I see how it comes. It could be several pieces. But it’s only about 12 to 15 yards total, which is not much.
If you want any black pallex material you have to email me - [email protected] - and put how many yards you want in your email and I will see if I can honor your request. Keep in mind, I may not get the black pallex material for a while because of the holidays, etc.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -
If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]
TIP FROM KIRBAN -
With your trunk lid closed, try to push down on each of the back corners. If you can push down, you need to adjust the rubber stop(s) outward to eliminate the gap. Gaps create rattles and these cars have enough rattles!

FACTORY-STYLE BLACK TRUNK KIT (9 PIECES)
One of the very desirable options that GM offered in the Buick Regal was a fully carpeted trunk kit that also covered the spare tire and the side panels in your Regal. Besides the nice appearance, it also helps to protect the inner fender walls from being dented from any objects you would carry in the trunk.
The discontinued GM kit consisted of seven different grey pieces. We used the original pieces to develop an improved trunk kit.
We offer this trunk kit in two colors - BLACK (part #7764) or GREY (part #6510.)
NOTE - Our photo shows the GREY material trunk kit. If you are ordering from this page on the website, you would receive the BLACK trunk kit, part #7764.
Our kit consists of nine different pieces (two more pieces than GM and some have a diecut backing like factory), all of which are clearly marked, and kit comes with placement instructions.
Once installed there are no unfinished edges in your trunk, even the hinge brackets are covered.
NOTE - We are now including a special Trunk Kit Installation DVD, Part #7056 at no charge when you purchase our trunk kit.
NOTE - You may also be interested in this related grey trunk kit - #6510 Factory-style GREY Trunk Kit, 9 pieces.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -
With your trunk lid closed, try to push down on each of the back corners. If you can push down, you need to adjust the rubber stop(s) outward to eliminate the gap. Gaps create rattles and these cars have enough rattles!

1984-1987 Buick Regal -
FACTORY-STYLE BLACK TRUNK KIT (9 PIECES)
