Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 12-02-2009
ANNUAL KIRBAN CHRISTMAS CONTEST -
There is still time for you to get your 3 guesses in for our Annual Kirban Christmas Contest.
This contest is already shaping up to have the largest responses we have had for our annual Christmas contest. Who knows, you may be the Top Prize winner!
Here are the rules for our Annual Kirban Christmas Contest -
The deadline is THIS Saturday, December 5th, 2009, 6 pm eastern time. No answers will be considered after that time.
The Photo 1 in last week's (11-25-2009) Inner Circle shows the actual metal Christmas House that contains the M & Ms. Mixed in with the M & Ms are those 3 small bite-size candy bars that you also see in that same Photo 1. A very unique Top Prize is also visible in this photo.
You simply guess how many are in the container. No purchase is necessary.
You get 3 guesses. Your 3 guesses MUST appear in one single email to - [email protected]
Do not email to any other email address as it will NOT be included in the contest.
To be a winner, you must be the closest UNDER the actual M & M count. In case of any ties, the earliest date on the email will be the first place winner. Second and third place would be the next 2 closest guesses with the earliest date on your email.
A Clue - Here is the approximate size of the metal Christmas House - It measures approximately 7-1/2 inches tall, 6 inches wide and 3-1/2 inches deep. The container says it originally held 10-1/2 oz of those small bite-size candy bars.
FIRST PLACE PRIZE - A part of legendary Top Fuel Dragster history is the top prize. The FIRST place winner will receive this custom-mounted used Hemi piston and connecting rod display. This is an actual connecting rod and piston from one of the last Swamp Rat dragster Don Garlits built in 2001-2003. They remove the rods and pistons after just 2 runs! In other words, less than one mile is on them! His top full dragsters produce anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 HP. You will also get with this prize a Certificate of Authenticity, complete with photos showing him signing the connecting rod and piston. Our son Darrell made the stand for it. You will also get the Christmas House filled with M & Ms.
We were able to obtain a number of these signed connecting rods and pistons. We will offer them after the contest ends complete with stand and Certificate of Authenticity. If you want, you can email me personally and reserve one. Delivery prior to Christmas is assured. Supplies are limited. Since Don Garlits retired from Top Fuel in 2003, there will not be any more of these to become available.
The SECOND place prize can be in last week's (11-25-2009) Inner Circle Photo 2. This is a metal poster showing the actual Hot Rod cover from May of 1971. This metal poster is made in the USA. It measures approximately 11-1/2 inches wide by 17-1/2 inches tall. This will also come with a Certificate of Authenticity and photo of Don Garlits as he autographed these posters. We will also have a very, very limited supply of them available after this contest has ended. (There are fewer than 15 available.)
The THIRD place winner will get a $25 Gift Certificate good towards any parts on our website.
So, that is our Annual Christmas Contest open to our Turbo Regal Inner Circle readers.
Please read all the rules carefully as they must be followed exactly. Remember, the earliest guesses UNDER the actual M & M count will be declared the First, Second and Third place winners.
Remember, the deadline is THIS Saturday, December 5th, 2009, 6 pm eastern time.
We will email the winners by email after the contest closes. Winners will be announced in the December 9th Inner Circle.
NOTE - We are running a slightly different contest on the Turbobuicks.com website under "Turbo Lounge." Click on the "Kirban Christmas Contest" heading under Turbo Lounge for those details and prizes.
BACKGROUND ON THE DON GARLITS VINTAGE CONNECTING RODS AND PISTONS -
Don Garlits used Brooks B-1 rods during that 2001-2003 time period. Back then, they sold for about $100 each. The rods are made from 7075-T6 forged aluminum and burnished. The piston is made by Venolia and, according to them, they sold for about $65 each.
Don stopped running Top Fuel back in 2003 at the age of 71. He now covers the quarter-mile trip in the ten-second range in his Drag Pack Challenger, courtesy of Dodge. Dodge gave him the first one built. So, you can see that there is a limited number of these actual pistons and connecting rods from Don's actual Swamp Rat dragsters.
It may not be Turbo Buick related, but it is a unique piece of Top Fuel Drag Racing History from the one name that stands above the rest - Don Garlits. His records include 144 national wins in his 50-year career.
We will also be offering the autographed Don Garlits Hemi piston and rod on its own display stand soon. These would include a Certificate of Authenticity and a photograph of Don autographing the connecting rod and piston. Having this visual proof with it adds to its value down the road.
As of yet, we do not have a final price for them. We will sell a very limited number of just the autographed connecting rod or an autographed piston again with a photograph and Certificate of Authenticity. Watch for final pricing soon.
Although this unique collectible is not Turbo Buick related, we want to make them available to our loyal customer base first before we start promotions to the Hemi and Mopar market.
When you research Don Garlits on the internet, his list of accomplishments over the last 50 plus years puts him in a league by himself.
I have to confess, I had no idea of the many records he set and national wins he had under his belt when we first contacted him about being a spokesperson for ZDDPlus™.
ANOTHER MAJOR PROJECT IN THE WORKS -
We are very close to making a deal with another long-time icon in the muscle car world for another unique collectible! This icon is well known to every performance car owner. We hope to have this unique item available early next year if all goes as planned. Stay tuned!
RADIO OPTIONS IN THE TURBO REGALS Part 7 -
To date, we have covered virtually every version of radio that Buick had available for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, including the radio delete plate and the lowly push button am radio.
Within a few short years after production ceased on the 1987 Turbo Regals, the next upgrade became an option in the Buicks. Of course, I am referring to the am/fm with CD option.
Today's radios offer more options, which can even include satellite radio. The CD option still remains popular today.
Visually, you would think almost every later factory GM am/fm CD player would fit into your Turbo Regal. Like we pointed out with the various radios many are similar but not every later GM version radio will fit.
To my knowledge, all the GM am/fm CD players have the newer 21-pin plug design and the smaller antenna opening. This means you need the adapter harness and antenna adapter to accept your factory plug and antenna lead.
This is a part that is available from us. 1984-1987 Turbo Regal - Late-Model RADIO PLUG-IN HARNESS KIT $35. We show it in Photo 4.
Here is a link to the Harness Kit on our web site:
http://www.kirbanperformance.com/product/89/RADIO+PLUG-IN+HARNESS+KIT+12+PIN+to+21+PIN+%237065.html
There are several things to consider if you purchase a later model factory GM am/fm CD player off the internet.
In the am/fm CD format, (just like the earlier am/fm cassette format) you had two main versions. The cheaper version just had base and treble and the top-of-the-line version had the EQ option (Graphic Equalizer). So, expect to pay more for the unit that has the EQ feature.
Keep in mind, not all of them had a black face and black buttons. Some had a grey face and grey buttons that came in F body cars. Some of them (depending on the years) the off and on button and volume will vary.
Next, you need to know the model number you are considering buying. There is at least a dozen or more model numbers that will fit in your Turbo Regal.
Here are 3 model numbers that will work in your Turbo Regal. They are #16085434, #16170214 and 16179344 - all have the EQ feature. These would be the more expensive radios to buy because of the EQ option. You may also run into radios that someone has changed or removed the faceplate or the label showing the model/serial number, making it difficult to determine if the radio will work for your application.
Last, but not least, does the unit you are buying have any warranty? Although GM am/fm CD players had fewer problems than the am/fm cassette players, they can be very costly to fix. Repairs can run $100 or more.
Also, does the radio you are looking to buy have a nice visual faceplate?
Do they include the needed jumper adapter harness and antenna lead?
These are all things you need to consider, unless the unit is dirt-cheap!
The am/fm CD factory GM radios that will work are all out of the early 1990 GM cars and trucks. There are 2 reasons that make them difficult to find today. One is the fact it is now 2009 and the radios are now almost 20 years old. Also when the CD option in GM cars first became available, they were an expensive option and many Buick owners (being an older clientele) did not buy that option. They also came in other GM vehicles as well, but still are difficult to find.
The ones we offer from time to time, do have a 90-day warranty, and include the needed adapter harness and antenna lead. There are also radios that will fit your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal and have an all-black satin face and buttons.
I guess the one saving grace with our cars is the fact you can remove and replace your stock radio in less than 30 minutes. A feat I know can’t be accomplished in many of the later GM cars!
PHOTO 1 - Shows the basic 2 versions of the highly-desirable GM am/fm CD players. Both have the satin black face with matching black buttons. The one on top is the radio with just the Base and Treble buttons. The bottom radio is the top-of-the-line am/fm CD with the optional EQ upgrade. Both of these would need the adapter harness and antenna lead (shown in Photo 4) to work in your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal.
PHOTO 2 - Shows a late-model GM radio that has the am/fm and cassette feature with EQ. This would be the later replacement radio for the top-of-the-line radio that was offered in your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. This would require the adapter harness and antenna lead to work in your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal.
PHOTO 3 - Shows the late-model GM am/fm CD with Base and Treble feature in my personal 1987 Turbo-T. NOTE - To make it appear more correct, I have installed the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal outer radio knobs, so it matches the cigarette lighter. The end result is a factory-looking unit that allows me to play CDs in my 1987 Turbo-T without hurting the value of my car.
PHOTO 4 - Shows the adapter harness with the antenna lead. Both are needed if you go to any of the later GM-style radios, which have a 21-pin setup.
NEW PRODUCT -
Here's a neat rear end cover that TA Performance has produced that we are now selling.
1984-1987 Turbo Regal -
STOCK REPLACEMENT REAR END COVER, GASKET & HARDWARE
This stock replacement machined cast aluminum rear end cover is made by TA Performance.
It will fit the stock 8.5 rear end found on all original 1984-1987 Turbo Regals.
It measures about 4" deep. This will clear the factory crossflow muffler.
The cover is made from machined 319 aluminum, and comes complete with a drain plug and O-ring, a cover gasket, and grade 8 bolts.
The turbo-six symbol and Buick wording appears across the bottom of the cover. This cover allows the rear end to hold more fluid and the fin design aids in cooling.
An excellent upgrade for the stock rear end.

GM PARTS UPDATE -
It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.
This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them. Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.

KIRBAN PERFORMANCE CLOSE-OUT PARTS -
We have the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - GM Air Flow Duct (from turbo to MAF sensor), Part #6536 in stock for $61.95. Just a few left now.
We also have a very limited supply left of brand new 1984-1987 Turbo Regal cam sensors at $165 each.
If you are interested in any of these parts, you must call our office to purchase it.

GREAT NEWS ON THE GNX EXHAUST SYSTEM -
We are happy to announce the GNX exhaust system is in the final stages of production. Richard Clark has made a jig to check each system prior to shipping. He has recently bought some equipment so he can expand the pipes, so each system is a slip fit when the end consumer gets it.
The system is all mandrel bent using 304 stainless, and will include the center-to-center mufflers and clamps. This system is all 2-1/2 inch and will outflow the factory GM system.
Each system will come with easy-to-follow directions and will be drop shipped directly from North Carolina.
Final costs and pricing is almost ready, and we will be offering a special introductory price if purchased prior to Christmas. We will be making it available to other wholesale suppliers as well.
