Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 12-19-2018 –
IMPORTANT BREAKING NEWS -
A few hours ago, I got a personal phone call from Mike O'Neil owner of O'Neil Buick/GMC in nearby Warminster. PA.
The 1987 Grand National with 59,000 miles and factory astroroof was stolen from inside their dealership this past Sunday night. Somehow the alarm did not get activated where the car was stored. The Grand National was the only vehicle taken from the dealership.
The VIN number is 1G4GJ1174HP451458. Please post this info on any various groups you may belong to on Facebook or any Turbo Regal group. This is one of just a about 200 that have the trunk ID SPID decal signed by Molly. Please let me know if you hear anything.
One of my customers was coming to buy the car later this week.
2019 GRAND NATIONAL/GNX CALENDAR –
Duane Baker out of Arizona has done a follow-up calendar to the one he did for 2018. Once again, he had Grand National and GNX owners submit their photos to be considered for the 2019 calendar. Quality is top notch and in full color with each car owner recognized next to their photo of their car. This calendar makes a great gift for Christmas.
PHOTO 1 – We show a picture of the cover of the 2019 Grand National/GNX calendar with a smaller photo depicting the 12 months of the year.

Or you can email Duane direct at - [email protected]
NOTE – He also has an ad in our classified section.
LESS THAN 10 COPIES LEFT OF OUR SPID 60-PAGE BOOKLET –
The SPID 60-page booklet that we featured in photo 2 of the 12-05-18 issue of Grand News is almost sold out. We have fewer than 10 copies left at just $18.95, which includes USPS to the 50 states. Payment is by PayPal. Email me personally if you want a copy [email protected] We have no plans to make another print run of this informative booklet.
WHEN IT ALL BEGAN FOR US AND THE TURBO REGALS –
With another year winding down, it made me pause and reflect and I realized we probably have a huge segment of members to the weekly Inner Circle that don’t realize how long we have been doing this. Originally it was a printed newsletter entitled, “GRAND NEWS”. This printed version was mailed out once a month on a paid subscription basis. The first several issues were simply a single sheet beginning in the fall of 1987. At the time, we purchased or rather leased our 1987 Grand National in September of 1987. By July of 1988 we went to the 5-½” by 8-½” size format and subscription rate was just $12 for 1988. In 1989, the subscription rate jumped to $20 due to more pages and postage going up.
Doing a monthly printed newsletter was nothing new for me as I had been doing a monthly GTO newsletter for 8 years beginning in 1980. In the GTO world, I had the longest running monthly newsletter. The Buick GRAND NEWS followed the same format as the my GTO newsletter with news, humor, parts for sale, and cars. This was besides keeping 3 tow trucks on the road.
In June of 1988 we held our very first Open House event combining GTOs and Turbo Regals. Paul Zazarine, who was the editor of Muscle Car Review at the time, came and covered the event. We even had the co-founder of Hurst in attendance Bill Campbell.
In future issues, we will look at the past and some of the cool things that many of you may not be aware of that we wrote about over 15-20 years ago back when I was a lot younger.
PHOTO 2 – We show the Premier Issue #1 on the left plus the very first issue of the later format that began with the July 1988 issue.
THE HURST CONNECTION –
Many of you know that we have a strong connection with the original Hurst company. When I first got married we lived within 3 miles of the plant in Warminster, PA. My wife Eileen got her first job working there and drove our 1964 GTO to work at the plant. The GTO and Hurst cars and products would become our main business.
At the time Hurst, without a doubt, was the biggest in the game of shifters. Their timing was perfect as the 4-speed shifters were just becoming a big part of the muscle car format in the mid-1960s. Once Hurst was able to score a contract with Pontiac to supply Pontiac with manual shifters, that really put Hurst on the map. It wasn’t long before the other GM car lines came on board as well. Only Chevrolet did not switch over to a Hurst shifter in their product line. They stuck with the Muncie shifter.
What many people may not realize is that Hurst was developing another product in the 1960s, which is used even to this day - the Jaws of Life. A few years ago, I heard from the company that owned the Jaws of Life and they had no idea it was developed by Hurst!
It seems ironic that Hurst name also was the “H” for the shift pattern. On the first year GTO, 1964, Hurst was not permitted to have their Hurst name on the shifter. I am sure this did not sit well with Hurst. That changed as the 1965 and up when shifters did have the visible Hurst name on the chrome stick. I’ve always been told Hurst was the very first company that GM allowed to have their company name to be visible on their vehicles. The only exception back then was the tire manufacturer. The other down side is that Pontiac used their own linkage to the shifters. It was not as firm as the threaded rods that Hurst was suppling with the aftermarket shifters.
This provided my company a huge opportunity to sell what was called a “KPO Kit,” so GTO owners could have a nice firm shifter over the factory format. What many of you may not realize is that in some ways the early GTO is very much like the Grand Nationals. In the beginning the GTO was simply an option on a Lemans coupe. It would be a few years before the GTO was a separate model.
The Grand National, as you know, was simply an option on the Regal coupe until the extended run was made in the fall of 1987.
Another comparison – it can be said that the GTO Judge (being a special limited model) in many ways was similar to Buick producing the GNX. GNX is at the top of the value chain for the Turbo Regals and, in the GTO world, the GTO Judge is way above regular GTOs of the same vintage especially the Ram Air IV versions.
When I was buying and selling GTOs in the late-1970s and early-1980s they were very reasonable priced. I would buy tri-power GTOs for under two grand. At first I only would buy 1964-1967 GTOs, figuring the later ones would not be that valuable. I also bought a number of Mopar cars, which I also liked. I steered clear of Chevrolets as I was never fond of them.
You don’t need a crystal ball to realize that in a few years the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals will be trading hands at the prices the 1964-1967 GTOs are trading hands now. In 1966 alone Pontiac made 80,000 GTOs. In the Turbo Regal world, we have far less numbers to work with, which means if demand remains high, prices will keep creeping up.
I’ve been lucky in that the two car models I backed as a business both have proven to be winners in the restoration market. I only wish I had kept all the ones I sold over the years!
I do have what I feel is the rarest Hurst collection of prototypes and related items dating back to the very early days of Hurst. Their value today is tough to measure.
PHOTO 3 – In my private collection I have 2 different original Hurst cloth banners. Unlike the banners you see today that are vinyl, these are cloth. They both measure approximately 2 ft by 3 ft. The yellow cloth banner has the early Hurst logo. I would guess this one to be from the early 1960s. I had them both put in frames. To the right collector, these are worth over $1,000 each today. I obtained these over a dozen years ago.
PHOTO 4 – We show a hand painted Hurst sign that was done again in the early to mid-1960s when Hurst was just starting to line up Speed Shops in the midwest to carry their shifters. Speed Shops have virtually disappeared over the last dozen years or more due to the internet. I got this sign years ago as it was used as a floor in a crawl space above a garage. It measures approximately 3 ft by 4 ft.
Unlike the cloth banners, this is probably 1 of just 1 that was ever done. Its value today is tough to determine. Go to any major swap meet today and you can clearly see how the interest has risen in the values of old original signs. The more popular the brand of the product is and the age, the higher price tag is associated with that sign. Condition also plays a factor in the value as well. I have always collected signs, samples, or prototypes simply because I knew items like that usual had lower production numbers.
REMINDER OF CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S CLOSING DATES –
We will be closed Monday, December 24th thru January 1st, 2019. We will reopen January 2nd Wednesday. Any orders processed through our website while we are closed will be filled once we are back in the office. Orders will be filled in the date order we receive them.
There will be no weekly Inner Circle Wednesday, December 28th or Wednesday, January 2nd. In other words, I am taking a 2-week hiatus from doing the weekly Inner Circle.
CHRISTMAS M&Ms CONTEST WINNERS –
The actual count for the combined two containers was 1,400 M&Ms. Taking first place with a guess of 1,379 was Mike Palmer out of Utah. Mike has entered many of the contests in years past and this is the first time he scored a win!
Taking second place was Paul Lee out of Illinois. Paul owns a 1987 Grand National since 2006 and has been a customer ever since. Using High School Geometry formulas he arrived at his guess of 1,375.
Congrats to both winners.
REMEMBER –
Remember this is our last Inner Circle email until January 9th, 2019. Our family wishes you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
As my Dad would always say, “Your Health is your Wealth.” With that being said, I hope you and yours have a Healthy New Year in 2019.
CARSMARTS RADIO IS ON THE AIR AND ON THE WEB! –
Turbo V6 enthusiast Steve Saffier (who produced “The Dennis Kirban Story” on YouTube last year) is producer and host of a new automotive radio program broadcasting live every Saturday from 11am – 12 noon on 610 ESPN radio (the old WIP 610 am for those in the area.) The show talks about different aspects of the car world and Steve’s affinity for Turbo Regals and Syclone/Typhoons often is expressed in nearly every show.
You can tune in live or livestream the show at http://www.610espn.com from anywhere in the world.
See http://www/carsmartsradio.com for updates on future shows.
OUR ANNUAL 2018 CHRISTMAS SPECIALS –
Here is a complete listing of our annual Christmas Specials for 2018. These orders must be called in to our office to get the proper discount and shipping costs. We tried to put related items together as a Package Deal to make your project easier.
I highly recommend the Christmas Special #8702 that gives you the complete body and core support bushing kit complete with new grade 8 bolts to make the car ride like new again. This is a worthy winter project. I can’t stress it enough, the longer you put this project on the back burner, the bigger the risk you have of having some of the body bolts spin on the cage nut. If this happens the project becomes a lot more involved and costly because welding would be needed to reattach a cage nut to the car.

UPDATE ON GM LICENSED GRAND NATIONAL T-SHIRTS –
These new GM licensed Grand National T-shirts have arrived. Many of our orders have been filled earlier this week. We just ordered more.
Here is a link to these new shirts on our website.
NON-BUICK PARTS - FOR SALE –
I have several items for sale this first week. In each case the price includes shipping to the basic 48 states. Perhaps you have a relative or a good friend with one of these cars. All these items are extremely nice and priced to sell. Again, Paypal is the preferred method of payment. You must email me direct - [email protected] to purchase or check if item(s) are still available. All these items are bargain priced and extremely nice otherwise I would not bother hauling them out of the junkyard.
C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.
C-4 – For the Subaru Outback, a full set (4) embroidered with the word Outback factory carpet savers that are absolutely mint. Grey black color weave look. They are probably 1990s vintage. The price is just $38.95 for the full set, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.
C-5 – For any 2001-2004 Honda Civic with the grey/black interior I have a mint original factory passenger embroidered floor mat and a mint one piece rear carpeted factory floor mat. The price is just $29.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.
NOTE - If requested we can supply photos of any item in this section if you are unsure as to whether it will fit your application.
UPDATE ON ANOTHER 1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -
As of this writing this 1987 Grand National is still available. This example has a great history. I sold it thru O'Neil Buick/GMC back in May of 2000. At that time, it had 26,000 miles on it. It features all original paint, less than 60,000 miles. Very well optioned and has the desirable factory astroroof option. Car comes with a copy of the original window sticker. Car appears to be 99% stock.
The trunk ID label (SPID) has been signed by Molly twice as the car was at both Reunion events Molly attended in 2002 and 2007 for us.
The price is $24,973 however, email Kevin direct at–[email protected] for more information and a special price for any of our customers. He can also be reached at 215-315-7680. Here is a link to this car on their website -
https://www.oneilbuickgmc.com/VehicleSearchResults?searchQuery=1987
We actually owned this car twice - first in May of 2000 when I got it from the original owner with 26,000 miles on it. The last owner bought it again from us and Mike O’Neil back in 2005 when it had about 55,000 actual miles. Car has always been owned by collectors.
Remember, as a customer of ours, you would get a special price on this original 1987 Grand National.
I recently went down to the dealership to further check this car out. The exhaust system is a Pypes system which looks brand new even has the stickers on it. With the car goes a 3-ring binder of receipts and information regarding Grand Nationals. It is probably 50-60 pages worth of material and includes the original window sticker.
The car has zero paint work 100% original with no molding down the side. This is a very solid example that has been garaged since new. It has almost every option including twilight sentinel. It has one of the later early 1990s AC Delco satin black am/fm CD players in the dash, which looks factory. That has a value of $350 or more.
I test drove the car and it runs out super tight and extremely fast. I was impressed with how good this car runs. Mileage is almost at 60,000 miles. Here is a fine example that is 90% stock featuring 100% original paint, with the factory astroroof. Plus all the documentation back to when it was purchased new. Plus it was one of my cars I bought and sold. This is also one of only about 200 that are signed by Molly. Come Spring you know the values will only increase.

1984-1987 BUICK REGAL (Including Turbo Regals) -
HOOD STOPPERS (2) AND HOOD STUD BUMPERS (2) SET
In many cases, these will fit older GM cars (1958 and up) that used this same format.
GM used studs that rust over a period of time and the rubber bumper stopper gets hard. A rusted stud makes adjustments difficult. A hard rubber stopper can lead to squeaks when you drive over a rough part of the road.
By making them in stainless, you are assured they will not rust.
Each one comes with a new rubber stopper included.
NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7804 Rubber Stoppers (15) Set, #6507 Reproduction “Fan Caution” Decal, and #6502 Reproduction “ACCESSORY BELT ROUTING” Decal
Another excellent replacement for any under-the-hood restoration.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING –
Time is running out to purchase any of our Christmas Specials.
Remember, our next weekly Inner Circle will be Wednesday, January 9th, 2019. In a few short years, I could hit 1,000 weekly Inner Circle newsletters.
