12-1-10 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 12-01-10

INNER CIRCLE INTERNET GLITCHES LAST WEEK -

As you are probably aware, you did not get your personal emailed weekly Inner Circle from us last Wednesday. For some reason, there was a glitch when we tried to send it and we were not able to get it posted through our service. It did go through on Monday and it is also posted on the website.

If this happens in the future, we will still post the Inner Circle on the website on Wednesday afternoon.

Remember, you can view all the Inner Circles on our website. We post the new one every Wednesday in the early afternoon as a back up to the emailed version. The only difference is that we do not include the special "Rare Parts From Us" section that appears at the end of the emailed Inner Circle on the website.

BUICK LITERATURE - PART 17 -

Last week (11-24-10) the second photo in that group showed an illustration of two different Buick trucks that we assume Molly must have designed for Buick. I say this because over the years Molly has done several truck designs for other various GM car lines. Many years ago my wife, Eileen was visiting with Molly and went to his studio in California. At that time he gave her copies of artwork he had done for Buick for use on various trucks. We recently came across one of the pieces Molly had given her.

PHOTO 1 - Shows a copy of the artwork Eileen got from Molly that was done for Buick. This was a color photocopy of the actual hand-drawn color mockup for a Buick Roses Racing design layout that Molly drew. This was done at the time when artists would actual draw and color a "color comp" to show the client. This color copy was glued to a brown matt board and it used to hang in Molly's office. The matt board is bent, the glue is not holding the paper down, and the color is slightly faded, but we are glad to have it.

Like the artwork we showed last week, we have no idea if any of these designs ever made it specifically to any GM trucks for use at shows or major events. I know I don’t ever recall seeing them anywhere.

Connecting rods may vary in design from actual one shown. All the parts have only seen approximately two ¼-mile runs as they would tear down the engine to replace these parts after 2 runs. Dons Hemi powered dragsters produced between 6,000 and 8,000 hp.

We have a very limited number of the combination piston and connecting rod mounted on a metal display stand, Part #7253. This item you must call and ask for Christina to be assured of getting one of the last complete sets. The Christmas special price is just $99.95 plus shipping. We have about 6 left. Price includes Certificate of Authenticity. You save $40.

MORE GOOD NEWS

I now have it figured out to once again be able to offer the various body bushing/cushion kits like we used to sell original when we could still get them from GM. We will have 4 new kits available next week.

NOTE - GM refers to the body bushings or mounts as "cushions." Most car owners refer to them as "bushings." We have used both terms in our descriptions.

First, we will have Part #7304, which will be the reproduction Radiator Core Support bushing/cushion kit. This is the very first one that secures the radiator core support to the top of the frame. It is the only kit where the 2 bushings are reversed and requires an exposed nut with a bolt. This reproduction is a hard rubber material like the original and comes with both upper and lower bushings/cushions and new hardware.

PART #7304 - 1978-1987 Buick Regal (All models) - Reproduction Radiator Core Support Bushings (4) Kit. This would be for position #1.

Next, we will have a complete 22 bushing/cushion kit. This will cover positions, #2, #3, #4, #5, 6, and 7. The #5 position only the GNXs received originally, but it is included in this kit. This kit will fit all 1982-1987 Buick Regal models. Part #7305. The price is $249.95. This kit is a reproduction of the original hard rubber bushing kit. If you buy this kit, we recommend to also purchase our grade 8 bolt kit for the body mounts, Part #6974 for $27.95 (less 15% Christmas discount). This would give you everything you need to do the job properly over the winter months.

PART #7305 - 1982-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) - Reproduction Body Mount Bushings (22) Kit

As most turbo owners realize originally according to the Buick parts book for whatever reason Buick never installed the lower body bushings/cushions in positions #3, #4, and #7. Adding to the confusion most of the Turbo Regals we have bought and sold had a lower body bushing/cushion in position #7.

Position #3 is under the center of the door. Position #4 is just in front of the rear axle assembly and position #7 is the last one back by the rear bumper support. It is the only one where the location differs from the driver's side to the passenger's side.

We had to go to another source in order to make up our 4 hard rubber bushing/cushion kit and our 6 hard rubber bushing/cushion kit. These kits are an aftermarket version that we get from another source. They are a hard rubber format like the original GM, but we have to include a special size steel washer to make them work. The good news is we can sell these a lot cheaper than we sold the 4 and 6 bushing/cushion kits in the past. As a bonus, each of these 2 kits (the 4 bushing/cushion and 6 bushing/cushion kits) will come with a matching number of correct new grade 8 bolts and directions.

The 4 bushing/cushion kit fits all 1982-1987 Buick Regal all models and is just $29.95. This kit comes with four new grade 8 bolts!

PART #7306 - 1982-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) - Aftermarket Four-Piece Lower Body Bushings (4) Kit

The 6 bushing/cushion kit fits all 1982-1987 Buick Regal all models and is just $39.95. This kit comes with six new grade 8 bolts!

PART #7307 - 1982-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) - Aftermarket Six-Piece Lower Body Bushings (6) Kit

None of these 4 new kits are on our website as of yet. We fully expect to have our inventory ready to ship by early NEXT week, December 13th, 2010.

If you wish, you can call Christina now and get on the list. Please specify which Part number you need.

NOTE - These 4 new kits do NOT qualify for our current Christmas Special.

The 4 and 6 bushing/cushion kit is subject to availability because we are buying them from a source that uses them as part of a larger body bushing kit. So, there may be times when we can't get them for our stock.

When we were selling used 1986-1987 Turbo Regals every single one we sold, we installed the missing lower body bushings whether it took the 4 or the 6. This is something you want to do without delay. The longer you wait the tougher it may be to remove the factory bolts due to rust. In some cases since the bolt is simply pressing on a metal washer and can flex since a gap exists your body mount bolt can simply come lose and fall out!

The 4 or the 6 bushing/cushion kit is very easy to install. These are the lower bushings/cushions, meaning you can easily install these without even raising your car up. Simply back out the body mount bolt, insert the new bushing/cushion, and install the new grade 8 bolt that comes with each kit.

A word of advice - If you are planning to redo all the body mounts with new bushings/cushions, it's best to have a professional body shop do the work. The body needs to be raised completely off the frame by several inches. You need to remove the rear bumper, otherwise the bumper will crush the rear bumper fillers. Caution must be used to make sure you do not stretch any fuel lines too far and cause a leak.

The real key is when you reposition the body back on the frame you reset it perfectly square on the frame. By doing so, you will achieve something Buick never did. I have it from a good source that knows for a fact, none of the Turbo Regals left the assembly plant exactly "square" on the frame. It was not off enough to cause any issues, so it was never corrected. (I just wish they had paid a little better attention to painting these cars!)

Some of you may have discovered this when you go to install larger rims and tires on the back. You may observe that one tire is closer to the outer frame rail than the other side. Adding to the problem is when Buick elected to go with a flat washer in #3 lower positions, it really did not secure the body to the frame as good as it could be. This is why today due to age and environment, some of the body bushings/cushions may really be crushed.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF YOU ARE MISSING BODY BUSHINGS -

The positions for the bushings that Buick never installed were all lower ones, which are clearly visible once you know where to look or feel with your hand.

The first one is in position #3, which is in the center of the door. Locate the body mount and if you only see a washer pressed against the sleeve of the upper body bushing, you will see about a ½" gap between the frame and the washer.

The #4 position - You have to feel if a body bushing is present because it is in a hole in the frame rail just in front of the rear axle assembly. You can also use a small flashlight. It is pretty safe to assume if you do not have the lower one in position #3, you will not have them in position #4. The number #7 position is very easy to view, as it's the last body mount near where the rear bumper supports are attached. This is the only position where it is in a slightly different location on the driver's frame rail verses the passenger's frame rail.

The bad news is it can be quite difficult to remove the body mount bolts in the #4 and #7 location, if the car was driven in the winter. Rust can freeze the body mount bolts. You also run the risk of breaking the captured cage nut lose, which in turn causes the bolt to simply spin. If that happens, you need to cut a hole in the floor and weld in a new cage nut and re-weld the floor panel either in the trunk or under the rear seat. Unfortunately, there is no other way to reach the captured cage nut for the body mount bolts.

All of these 4 new body bushing/cushion kits described above will include detailed directions and a factory illustration showing the locations of the body mounts on your Regal.

ON THE NEWSFRONT

Joining the ranks of the unemployed, one of the more famous GM employees, Mr Goodwrench. He has been told to pack his tools as his services are no longer needed! He started with the company back in 1974 to give a common identity to service for all its dealers. Maybe Ford has an opening?

Back in May of 1939, Robert Irwin as a 13-year-old kid bought a new comic book entitled, "The Batman." It's the only comic book he kept from his youth all these years. (Good thing his Mom didn't toss it out!) It recently sold at auction for a cool $500,000. That is a one dime investment that has really paid off!

Mustang with its new Boss 302 will have a very unique feature. A special two-key technology is being offered. The buyers have to order the second key from the Ford dealership. This key will have extra programming flashed into the engines computer's memory. "Trackey," as it will be called, has an embedded chip that resets the car's computer. Insert the key and about 200 engine settings will in turn make the car more competitive on a racetrack. The car will respond instantly to hard acceleration and deliver more low-end torque, and the engine will rumble at idle.

My guess is GM will also explore this at some future point, perhaps with the new Camaro SS, in order to keep up with Ford!

RARE WE4 - FOR SALE -

A good friend of mine is selling this fine example of a WE4 hardtop.

It has just 28,000 original miles, a stock drivetrain with factory astro roof. Finding a WE4 with a factory astro roof is extremely rare. Car has power windows, power locks, concert sound II, power trunk release, and new tires all the way round. The engine compartment is detailed with no oil leaks. Car has a little bit of paperwork. A very nice example that runs and drives just like new. Car is located in New Jersey. Asking $16,900. For more info, contact Greg Glenn - 732-406-6285 - email - [email protected]

NOW IN STOCK FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY - UPPER DASH OVERLAY PANEL -

We recently picked up our new upper dash overlay panels from the powder coater and they are in stock. This panel fits all 1978-1987 Buick Regal (All Models). It is designed to simply lay over top of your original GM plastic upper dash panel and hide any cracks or missing pieces!

We had an actual prototype on display at our Open House and at the GS Nationals. In both events this product generated a lot of interest because it offers a simple solution to the problems associated with the factory upper dash panel, which cracks over a period of time.

Another factor is the GM list price on the upper dash panel is now over $215 each. Some customers have even reported that over time, even the new plastic GM upper dash panel cracks!

We have made a steel overlay panel, powder-coated grey with a textured finish to closely match the original upper dash panel. This panel can be painted over the grey powder coating, if you need to have it in a different color for your interior. See complete information below.

NOTE - This new part does not qualify for the Christmas discount!

1978-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
UPPER DASH OVERLAY PANEL

The factory upper dash panel from GM now retails for over $220 each and the price will likely continue to increase, and it may eventually be discontinued. From GM this panel comes in one dark shade of blue. The GM upper dash panels are still made in plastic and can also crack in time.

We have an inexpensive solution. We had a flat steel overlay panel made to simply go over the factory plastic upper dash panel.

The radio speaker vents, defroster ducts, and automatic climate control series of holes (the group of small holes in the shape of a rectangle to the right of center) have been laser cut in the overlay panel and match up to the original vents and holes in the plastic panel.

To give the new steel overlay a cleaner look, we eliminated the 5 screw holes across the bottom of the original panel. This can be seen in the photo when compared to the original upper dash panel in the same photo.

We have them powder-coated grey with a textured finish for a lasting appearance. If you have any other interior color, you can simply paint this panel to match.

This new overlay panel can be attached using various methods, such as double-sided tape or glue to secure it in place.

This is an inexpensive "fix" for the cracking problem that affects almost every 1978-1987 Regal, as seen in the photo on the left. It is less than half the cost of the GM replacement plastic upper dash panel. Our overlay panel is shown installed in the photo on the right. Since it is made in flat steel, the overlay panel will never crack or distort!

Unfortunately, both of these photos were taken through the windshield glass, so there are some reflections and color variations.

A nice interior restoration item.

THE GIFT FOR THE PERSON WHO HAS EVERYTHING -

Custom-Airbrushed "TRUE FIRE" Flames
Microsoft® Wireless Mobile Mouse Model 3500

Today almost everyone has a computer, whether it's a desktop, or a laptop, or a notebook style. Now, you can have a custom airbrushed mouse to go with your computer. Since it is so unique, it makes a great Christmas or birthday gift.

We start with a brand new Microsoft® Wireless Mobile Mouse Model 3500, which retails for $29.95. These are compatible with both PC or Mac computers.

The center shell of the mouse is carefully removed, then prepped, scuffed, and cleaned. Then, using an automotive basecoat, 2 coats of black paint are applied. Then a unique flame design is custom air brushed, layer after layer. Flames are first painted with white base coat, followed by a transparent candy yellow and orange to give it a unique deep 3-dimensional appearance. Once dry, 2 coats of high-quality automotive urethane clear are applied as a final coating. The end result is a surface as smooth as glass.

Each mouse is carefully inserted into the original Microsoft® packaging. The package comes with a battery, USB connector, and directions to download the appropriate mouse software.

The quality and workmanship is excellent. Unfortunately, since there is such a fine shiny finish, it is difficult to photograph, so the picture of the "True Fire" flames mouse on our website does not do it justice.

Each one is custom airbrushed, so no two are exactly alike.

The popularity of similar flames designs in the marketplace is just as evident today as it was years ago. Flame designs can still be seen on many show cars. A unique touch to compliment your computer. Makes an excellent gift for any PC or Mac user.

Microsoft® Mouse Details - For Windows®-based PC and Mac, BlueTrack Technology™, Plug-And-Go Nano Transceiver (leave it plugged in or stow it in the mouse), 8-Month Battery Life, ON/OF Switch, Comfortable in Either Hand, and 3-Year Warranty.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
