THANKSGIVING DAY M&MS CONTEST WINNERS -
The answer for the Thanksgiving Day M&Ms Contest. There were 606 M&Ms in the Route 66 DVD metal tin. I was surprised at the number of guesses that put the count at over 1,000 M&Ms in that shallow 2-disc DVD tin!
Taking First Place with a guess of 567 was Frank Seufert. Frank hails from British Columbia, Canada and has been a customer of ours since the early 1990s.
Taking Second Place with a guess of 508 was Darren Kemery from Newark, Ohio. Darren has owned a Limited Turbo Regal since new. This is the second time he has come in second in one of our M&M contests!
Congrats to both winners and thanks to all those that participated.
Winners will be mailed their prizes this week.
Our plan is to do another M&M contest at the start of the New Year.
CARS SUFFERING WORSE RESALE VALUE AFTER 3 YEARS -
I recently read an article on the internet entitled, “Cars Suffering Worse Resale Value After 3 Years.” It also said which cars hold the most value after 3 years.
As one can probably guess, the Toyota had the most models that retain the highest value after 3 years. The worse investment you could make is the two-seater Smart car. At best, it retains about 32% of its value after 3 years. So, while you may be saving gas at the pump, you’re losing it on the value! Not to mention having friends laugh at you!
What surprised me was that the Dodge Challenger retains 62% of its investment, putting it ahead of the Mustang and Camaro. Another vehicle that surprised me was the Honda Ridgeline. It holds almost 63% of its original retail price after 3 years.
COMPARING POPULAR G-BODY CAR RESALE VALUES AFTER 3 YEARS -
I just realized that I have saved in my desk several N.A.D.A. Office Used Car Guides, including one for April 1990, which would basically be 3 years after the 1987 models.
Even back then when you compare a 1987 Grand National to a 1987 Monte Carlo SS and a 1987 Oldsmobile 442, the average retail prices puts the value higher on the 1987 Grand National. The difference is huge when you compare it to the 1987 Corvette in 1990 resale values.
Using the base M.S.R.P. for each model, here are the figures.
The Grand National M.S.R.P. was $15,136: after 3 years the average retail was still $13,325. It dropped in value less than $2,000.
The 1987 Monte Carlo SS M.S.R.P. was $13,463: after 3 years the average retail had dropped to $9,825. It dropped in value of less than $3700.
The Oldsmobile 442 M.S.R.P. $14,706: after 3 years the average retail dropped to $9,850. It dropped in value of less than $4,800.
Perhaps even worse were the numbers for the 1987 Corvette hatchback. The M.S.R.P. for the 1987 Corvette hatchback was $27,999. (You could almost buy two Grand Nationals for that price). 3 years later you would be lucky to see $19,550. You would have lost an average of over $8,000.
I am sure one of the contributing factors back then was the demand for the Grand National, especially in light of all the magazine articles. Several articles promoted the sinister look and the impressive quarter-mile times.
In all my car dealings, I can recall only having bought and sold 1 Monte Carlo SS that I took in on trade. It was a hardtop. I also did buy 1 super mint Oldsmobile 442 hardtop that had 12,000 miles on it, and I sold it for $12,000. That car was show quality. I bought it because it was less than 5 miles from our house and the seller was anxious to purchase a Ram Air GTO.
For any Yugo owners out there, here are the numbers for the Yugo hatchback. The M.S.R.P. was $3990. At the 3-year mark $1400 was the average retail. Quick math tells me you lost over 60%, not to mention the fact you bought a terrible car to start with!
N.A.D.A. also published an Appraisal Guide for the older car models 3 times a year. I will get into this probably in next week’s Inner Circle. I have a 2001 copy that covers the 1982 thru 1993 models. I also have their 2003 issue entitled, “Classic, Collectible and Special Interest Car Appraisal Guide.”

This is more from my archives. I have several factory Buick black and white photos from the actual Buick Press Kits. The earliest one I have shows the 1980 Buick Regal Sports Coupe, a model designation Buick used prior to introducing the T-Type package on their 1983 models. I also have one showing the 1982 Buick Regal Sport Coupes.
PHOTO 2 - Shows first the 1980 Buick Sports Coupe and the second photo shows 2 views of the 1982 Buick Sports Coupe. Years ago I had a really nice 1978 Buick Limited model that had the V8 engine in it. These early models where quite sharp looking. They would make a great starting platform for either a potent V8 or the 3.8 SFI intercooled engine.
The introduction of the 1983 Buick lineup introduced the T-Type label for the first time. Buick used that T-Type definition across the board on 5 different Buick models, including the Regal models. That T-Type designation was used on 5 different Buick models in 1983. The 2 that probably get the most notice would be the Regal and the Riviera. Both were turbo charged versions. It’s unfortunate, but you seldom ever see any of these T-Type models today.
PHOTO 3 - This photo shows the 1983 Buick Regal T-Type. It would not be until the 1984 model year when the Grand National would emerge in decent production numbers and start to capture the interest of the public.
PHOTO 4 - This very unusual factory photo shows 3 pictures. The top is the 1984 Grand National their Buick Special Products Mobil Test Facility, which appears to be built on a Chevy van. The lower left shows the Turbo Buick powerplant engine. The lower right appears to be a guy working at a computer in the truck.

NEW AUTOMOTIVE GADGETS -
Every year carmakers come out with new options for their product line. In most cases, these new options are great, especially things like heated seats for us old folks.
One feature, which makes little sense to me, is having keyless ignition. In recent years, these have become more common. Already, in some cases, owners have forgotten to turn off their ignition. A real danger if they parked in a garage attached to a house. The results can be death to the home occupants. Unfortunately, this has already happened.
One feature that annoys me and I am sure others is the battery operated tire monitors. The batteries fail after a few years, triggering a light on your dashboard. You know that as soon as 1 tire monitor fails, it’s only a matter of time before the others do too. I have lost count on the number of them I have replaced in several of my vehicles.
The ABS light and service engine light sometimes can be on and sometimes they might not turn on for days.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for improvements and progress, but some of the new features may turn out to not be a good thing as the vehicle ages.

TURBO REGAL POWER ANTENNAS UPDATE -
We had our son Darrell make up a sample bracket and template so these new power antennas will bolt into the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, like the originals.
He installed one in a Grand National that he had painted, and it used this new bracket.
These new power antennas have a manufacturer’s One-year Warranty.
Antennas are actually made for another GM car. They use the same screw-in bezel that sits on the top of the fender, so you can use the original bezel. The 3-wire lead and plug is identical to the original. The new bracket will be bolted to the new antenna. A rubber boot will also come with this new power antenna to protect the motor from the elements.
We expect to have these new power antennas ready to ship before the end of November. If you place your order in advance now, the sale price is $179.95 plus $12 shipping. The retail price once they are available will be $199.95 plus shipping. We would not charge your credit card until we are able to ship the power antenna to you.

Here is the information on our credits for cores.
We currently need original good 1986-1987 AC Delco mass air flow sensors. We allow $25 credit for each core that can be rebuilt. Credit will not be issued until we get your unit back from Cardone showing it was able to be rebuilt. Recent cores have shown that some of them are simply not able to be rebuilt any more.
TURBO CORES must be the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal stock ones. They must be complete. We will issue you a $100 Letter of Credit for each acceptable core.

1984-1987 G-Body (Including Buick Turbo Regal - except for GNX wheels) -
CORRECT LOOKING GRAY VALVE STEM CAPS (10) SET
More and more Turbo Regal owners are starting to restore their cars, since the values of original Turbo Regals is on the increase.
One visible small part is the unique style grey valve stem caps that were used on all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, except for the GNX.
These are the correct looking valve stem caps for the T wheels and the Grand National wheels. These are not correct for the GNX wheels.
If you have an original spare tire in your trunk, you can check that valve stem cap and the design will look identical to the caps pictured here.
These are the correct style. We did however had to paint them grey to match the original color.
Each car uses 4 valve stem caps for the wheels and 1 for the spare. Our set includes 10 caps, which gives you 2 full sets.
An excellent replacement item for any exterior restoration.

AFTERMARKET MANIFOLD AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR
Over a period of time, the original manifold air temperature sensor may fail to read accurately, due to age or dirt.
This manifold air temperature sensor gives the computer a reading of the air temperature as it enters the turbocharger. The sensor is capable of reading between -40 and 266F. This is the sensor that mounts in the factory elbow off the air cleaner assembly.

VACUUM BLOCK REPLACEMENT VACUUM HOSES (10) SET
These are the hoses that connect the vacuum lines to the vacuum block.
It takes 3 different sizes of the vacuum hoses to complete the set.
If you are buying either of our reproduction new billet vacuum blocks, it’s best to replace the 5 rubber hoses, since the originals may be cracked. Hoses may also split when you attempt to remove them.
Because the material is inexpensive, we only offer a set of 2 complete sets (10 hoses), so you will have a spare set.

Original bolts between both hood hinge brackets and both hood shock brackets are prone to rust over the years.

Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

THANKSGIVING DAY M&MS CONTEST WINNERS -
The answer for the Thanksgiving Day M&Ms Contest. There were 606 M&Ms in the Route 66 DVD metal tin. I was surprised at the number of guesses that put the count at over 1,000 M&Ms in that shallow 2-disc DVD tin!
Taking First Place with a guess of 567 was Frank Seufert. Frank hails from British Columbia, Canada and has been a customer of ours since the early 1990s.
Taking Second Place with a guess of 508 was Darren Kemery from Newark, Ohio. Darren has owned a Limited Turbo Regal since new. This is the second time he has come in second in one of our M&M contests!
Congrats to both winners and thanks to all those that participated.

CARS SUFFERING WORSE RESALE VALUE AFTER 3 YEARS -
I recently read an article on the internet entitled, “Cars Suffering Worse Resale Value After 3 Years.” It also said which cars hold the most value after 3 years.
As one can probably guess, the Toyota had the most models that retain the highest value after 3 years. The worse investment you could make is the two-seater Smart car. At best, it retains about 32% of its value after 3 years. So, while you may be saving gas at the pump, you’re losing it on the value! Not to mention having friends laugh at you!
What surprised me was that the Dodge Challenger retains 62% of its investment, putting it ahead of the Mustang and Camaro. Another vehicle that surprised me was the Honda Ridgeline. It holds almost 63% of its original retail price after 3 years.
COMPARING POPULAR G-BODY CAR RESALE VALUES AFTER 3 YEARS -
I just realized that I have saved in my desk several N.A.D.A. Office Used Car Guides, including one for April 1990, which would basically be 3 years after the 1987 models.
Even back then when you compare a 1987 Grand National to a 1987 Monte Carlo SS and a 1987 Oldsmobile 442, the average retail prices puts the value higher on the 1987 Grand National. The difference is huge when you compare it to the 1987 Corvette in 1990 resale values.
Using the base M.S.R.P. for each model, here are the figures.
The Grand National M.S.R.P. was $15,136: after 3 years the average retail was still $13,325. It dropped in value less than $2,000.
The 1987 Monte Carlo SS M.S.R.P. was $13,463: after 3 years the average retail had dropped to $9,825. It dropped in value of less than $3700.
The Oldsmobile 442 M.S.R.P. $14,706: after 3 years the average retail dropped to $9,850. It dropped in value of less than $4,800.
Perhaps even worse were the numbers for the 1987 Corvette hatchback. The M.S.R.P. for the 1987 Corvette hatchback was $27,999. (You could almost buy two Grand Nationals for that price). 3 years later you would be lucky to see $19,550. You would have lost an average of over $8,000.
I am sure one of the contributing factors back then was the demand for the Grand National, especially in light of all the magazine articles. Several articles promoted the sinister look and the impressive quarter-mile times.
In all my car dealings, I can recall only having bought and sold 1 Monte Carlo SS that I took in on trade. It was a hardtop. I also did buy 1 super mint Oldsmobile 442 hardtop that had 12,000 miles on it, and I sold it for $12,000. That car was show quality. I bought it because it was less than 5 miles from our house and the seller was anxious to purchase a Ram Air GTO.
For any Yugo owners out there, here are the numbers for the Yugo hatchback. The M.S.R.P. was $3990. At the 3-year mark $1400 was the average retail. Quick math tells me you lost over 60%, not to mention the fact you bought a terrible car to start with!
N.A.D.A. also published an Appraisal Guide for the older car models 3 times a year. I will get into this probably in next week’s Inner Circle. I have a 2001 copy that covers the 1982 thru 1993 models. I also have their 2003 issue entitled, “Classic, Collectible and Special Interest Car Appraisal Guide.”

This is more from my archives. I have several factory Buick black and white photos from the actual Buick Press Kits. The earliest one I have shows the 1980 Buick Regal Sports Coupe, a model designation Buick used prior to introducing the T-Type package on their 1983 models. I also have one showing the 1982 Buick Regal Sport Coupes.
PHOTO 2 - Shows first the 1980 Buick Sports Coupe and the second photo shows 2 views of the 1982 Buick Sports Coupe. Years ago I had a really nice 1978 Buick Limited model that had the V8 engine in it. These early models where quite sharp looking. They would make a great starting platform for either a potent V8 or the 3.8 SFI intercooled engine.
The introduction of the 1983 Buick lineup introduced the T-Type label for the first time. Buick used that T-Type definition across the board on 5 different Buick models, including the Regal models. That T-Type designation was used on 5 different Buick models in 1983. The 2 that probably get the most notice would be the Regal and the Riviera. Both were turbo charged versions. It’s unfortunate, but you seldom ever see any of these T-Type models today.
PHOTO 3 - This photo shows the 1983 Buick Regal T-Type. It would not be until the 1984 model year when the Grand National would emerge in decent production numbers and start to capture the interest of the public.
PHOTO 4 - This very unusual factory photo shows 3 pictures. The top is the 1984 Grand National their Buick Special Products Mobil Test Facility, which appears to be built on a Chevy van. The lower left shows the Turbo Buick powerplant engine. The lower right appears to be a guy working at a computer in the truck.

NEW AUTOMOTIVE GADGETS -
Every year carmakers come out with new options for their product line. In most cases, these new options are great, especially things like heated seats for us old folks.
One feature, which makes little sense to me, is having keyless ignition. In recent years, these have become more common. Already, in some cases, owners have forgotten to turn off their ignition. A real danger if they parked in a garage attached to a house. The results can be death to the home occupants. Unfortunately, this has already happened.
One feature that annoys me and I am sure others is the battery operated tire monitors. The batteries fail after a few years, triggering a light on your dashboard. You know that as soon as 1 tire monitor fails, it’s only a matter of time before the others do too. I have lost count on the number of them I have replaced in several of my vehicles.
The ABS light and service engine light sometimes can be on and sometimes they might not turn on for days.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for improvements and progress, but some of the new features may turn out to not be a good thing as the vehicle ages.

TURBO REGAL POWER ANTENNAS UPDATE -
We had our son Darrell make up a sample bracket and template so these new power antennas will bolt into the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, like the originals.
He installed one in a Grand National that he had painted, and it used this new bracket.
These new power antennas have a manufacturer’s One-year Warranty.
Antennas are actually made for another GM car. They use the same screw-in bezel that sits on the top of the fender, so you can use the original bezel. The 3-wire lead and plug is identical to the original. The new bracket will be bolted to the new antenna. A rubber boot will also come with this new power antenna to protect the motor from the elements.
We expect to have these new power antennas ready to ship before the end of November. If you place your order in advance now, the sale price is $179.95 plus $12 shipping. The retail price once they are available will be $199.95 plus shipping. We would not charge your credit card until we are able to ship the power antenna to you.

Here is the information on our credits for cores.
We currently need original good 1986-1987 AC Delco mass air flow sensors. We allow $25 credit for each core that can be rebuilt. Credit will not be issued until we get your unit back from Cardone showing it was able to be rebuilt. Recent cores have shown that some of them are simply not able to be rebuilt any more.
TURBO CORES must be the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal stock ones. They must be complete. We will issue you a $100 Letter of Credit for each acceptable core.

1984-1987 G-Body (Including Buick Turbo Regal - except for GNX wheels) -
CORRECT LOOKING GRAY VALVE STEM CAPS (10) SET
More and more Turbo Regal owners are starting to restore their cars, since the values of original Turbo Regals is on the increase.
One visible small part is the unique style grey valve stem caps that were used on all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, except for the GNX.
These are the correct looking valve stem caps for the T wheels and the Grand National wheels. These are not correct for the GNX wheels.
If you have an original spare tire in your trunk, you can check that valve stem cap and the design will look identical to the caps pictured here.
These are the correct style. We did however had to paint them grey to match the original color.
Each car uses 4 valve stem caps for the wheels and 1 for the spare. Our set includes 10 caps, which gives you 2 full sets.
An excellent replacement item for any exterior restoration.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
AFTERMARKET MANIFOLD AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR
Over a period of time, the original manifold air temperature sensor may fail to read accurately, due to age or dirt.
This manifold air temperature sensor gives the computer a reading of the air temperature as it enters the turbocharger. The sensor is capable of reading between -40 and 266F. This is the sensor that mounts in the factory elbow off the air cleaner assembly.

VACUUM BLOCK REPLACEMENT VACUUM HOSES (10) SET
These are the hoses that connect the vacuum lines to the vacuum block.
It takes 3 different sizes of the vacuum hoses to complete the set.
If you are buying either of our reproduction new billet vacuum blocks, it’s best to replace the 5 rubber hoses, since the originals may be cracked. Hoses may also split when you attempt to remove them.
Because the material is inexpensive, we only offer a set of 2 complete sets (10 hoses), so you will have a spare set.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
