MORE RARE TURBO REGAL RELATED LITERATURE -
Last week we touched on several rare Buick related brochures we recently acquired. This week we want to share with you some of the catalogs we have acquired from companies that catered to the Turbo Regal market.
In the early 1990s there were a lot more companies catering to the popular Turbo Regal market. Some of these companies expanded to other markets, while others simply faded away.
PHOTO 1 - We show catalogs of two of the big players from back in the day. The photo on the left shows Kenne Bell’s Buick catalog. According to the date on the price sheet included with this catalog, it was from April 1992. It runs 70 pages in length. The photo on the right shows an Applied Technologies & Research Inc. catalog, dated 1996. Originally, they operated out of California and later the company was sold and operated out of a little town called Fair Play, South Carolina, which is when this catalog was printed. Both of these companies were more engine hard core than what our Turbo Regal product line involved.
PHOTO 2 - We show two more catalogs that catered to the Turbo Regal market from back in the day. The photo on the left shows a 1996 Bowling Green Customs’ catalog. The original owner of Bowling Green Customs was Lloyd Tarter, who worked at the Corvette plant and lived in Bowling Green, Kentucky - hence the name of his company. He would later sell it to a couple that operated out of Marietta, Georgia, which is the address on this catalog. The photo on the right shows ANS Performance Products’ catalog. They were located Melrose Park, Illinois. According to the sticker on the cover, this catalog was from 1993.
All four of these catalogs provide good memories and can bring to mind some of the parts that used to be available for our cars. Some of their products have with stood the test of time and can still be found on various Turbo Regal cars today. These various catalogs help provide proof of those products and also show what they sold for back in the day.
It’s interesting to note that some of them published a monthly printed newsletter back in the day. Today our company Kirban Performance stands alone, first at printing a monthly newsletter entitled, “GRAND NEWS.” Then switching over to a monthly emailed newsletter entitled, the “Inner Circle.” A few years later we would switch it to a weekly email.
We first began a monthly printed newsletter in 1988. Starting in 2003 we switched to a monthly email format. Back then we charged $22 for the 12 monthly email issues. I am not exactly sure when we switched to a weekly Inner Circle format and made it FREE of charge to our customers. I do know this - I have done a lot of writing!
See the Rare Parts section as all four of these Turbo Regal catalogs are for sale.
BUICK RANKS THIRD WITH CONSUMER REPORTS -
Buick has become the first auto brand from Detroit’s Big Three automakers to place in the top three Consumer Reports annual ranking of the most reliable automotive brand in three decades.
We all know three decades ago (30 years) Buick was nowhere near the top with the Consumer Reports ranking! Buick came in third. The Lexus brand was first and Toyota came in second. Consumer Reports said Buick ranked third in part because it has a very limited stable of vehicles in its lineup. Rapidly climbing from South Korea is the Kia and Hyundai car companies. None of either of these brand models scored below average.
The list of complaints in 1987 on the Buick Regal model would have been very long! All of us could name several complaints instantly, ranging from poor paint quality to the T-Tops leaking.
I’m curious to know exactly where Buick ranked on the Consumer Reports list back in 1987. I’m also curious to see where the Yugo ranked.
PHOTO 3 - On the topic of quality control, I have saved a photo I took of a brand new Turbo Regal hood pad I bought years ago. When I opened the GM sealed box, this is what I saw. I probably should have kept it and put it on our Turbo Regal as a neat conversation piece. If nothing else it shows that the stencil or pattern was three separate patterns, instead of one single one! It also proves that someone at Buick had a sense of humor or wasn’t paying attention.
WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE A LIFT AT YOUR LOCATION -
For many of you that don’t have a lift in your garage, here is another method to help with some of those tough tasks that require a lift.
If you don’t have a lift, it can be a real challenge to install the body bushings or the Pypes exhaust system.
PHOTO 4 - Here is one way to make installation easy, if you lack a lift in your garage. It does require a few friends that have had too much to drink to help you flip your Turbo Regal on its roof. I don’t recommend you do this, especially if your car has the T-Tops option!

UPDATE FROM LAST WEEK’S INSIDE DETROIT ARTICLE -
We heard from Rick Fink from New York about the “Inside Detroit” article.
He recalls that in the Fall of 1986 he saw that same article called “Inside Detroit” in Hot Rod magazine. After reading the article back then, he traded his 11-month-old 1985 BMW 325 series in on his first Grand National. Years later he would buy one of our Grand Nationals!
UPDATE ON MY STORY ABOUT RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME AT AGE 16 -
It would be over 25 years later on a road trip across the country I would pull off the highway and drive to downtown Gallup, New Mexico. I was told by the local police the old jail from the 1960s had been torn down and was now a parking lot. I stood next to my car in that parking lot and called my Dad and told him where I was standing. It brought back memories to him as I talked to him on the phone from that parking lot.
I made life easier for my siblings, since none of them provided the headaches I did for my parents!

TIP FROM KIRBAN -
Here is a simple project to do over the winter. Replace the steering column bearing kit with our metal bearing kit, part #7572. Buick only used a rubber-like seal instead of a metal bearing. This bearing kit fits virtually every 1969 through 1995 GM car. Some GM models did get a metal bearing, but research has shown that the Turbo Regals got the cheaper rubber seal instead.
We sell hundreds of these kits every year. There are many other mail-order companies that buy it from us for their market. This kit is well worth the money!

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPLACEMENT EGR VACUUM SOLENOID
Over time, the EGR vacuum solenoid can fail, and trigger a code "32”.
The EGR is disabled at wide open throttle for maximum performance. The purpose of the EGR system is to lower nitrogen levels that are released into the atmosphere from the engine's exhaust. This is accomplished by decreasing the combustion temperature.
The EGR vacuum solenoid pulses the EGR valve many times a second to send the precise amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold.
If the EGR vacuum solenoid fails, the diagnostic switch in the EGR solenoid will trigger a code 32.
In states that have emission inspections, if this solenoid fails, it can cause your car to fail the emission test.
The EGR vacuum solenoid is located on the driver’s side of the engine, by the side of the valve cover. It sits behind the EGR valve.
It’s also best to check all the related vacuum lines to EGR vacuum solenoid for any cracks due to age or heat.
This replacement part is exactly like the GM original, there is no difference.
NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7749 Cam Shaft Sensor or #7161 TPS Sensor.
An excellent replacement part.

1984-1987 Grand National / GNX and 1984-1987 T-Type -
SLIP-ON GREY & BLACK
FRONT SEAT COVERS (2) and SEAT BELT COVERS (2) SET
With the price and limited availability of original grey and black pallex material for Grand Nationals and GNXs, it is important to protect your original seats from any dirt, wear, everyday mishaps and UV rays.
After much research, we found a high-quality set of grey and black slip-over seat covers for the bucket seat format. The bucket seat covers (2) are a one-piece design for each bucket seat.
Included with the set of covers are two small covers for the seat belts, if you want to use them.
The set does NOT include covers for the headrests.
These have been tested for fit by one of our long-time customers. After trying out two different brands of seat covers, this is brand he picked for quality and fitment.
Installation is quite simple and requires no tools or mechanical skills! You don't even have to remove the headrest to install the seat cover.
The seat covers are secured by elastic straps and velcro.
The center of each seat cover is a dark shade of grey with black on the sides of the cover, which is a very similar design to the original Grand National seats. These also look good in a Turbo Regal with a grey interior.
The material is 65% polyester and 35% synthetic rubber, and is machine washable.
The seat covers are plain - no logos or printing. They provide superior protection against wear, spills, moisture, and UV rays. These seat covers are also water resistant.
Our other photos show the cover on a Grand National seat right after they were put on. Any wrinkles clear once the covers are on for a while.
NOTE - The colors in our photos on our website may not represent these covers exactly due to computer monitor differences.
NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7516 GM Plastic Front Seat Belt Cap Covers (2) Set and #7479 GM Licensed Reproduction Front Bucket Grey Seat Belts (4 pieces) Set.
NOTE - This set includes 2 seat covers and 2 seat belt covers.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal and 1989 Turbo Trans Am -
CAM SHAFT SENSOR
Over time, the cam shaft sensor (cam sensor) can develop wear issues, which can affect the signal it sends to the ignition module and then to the ECM. Its purpose is to provide a reference point for the cam shaft. The ECM must see a signal from the cam shaft sensor for the engine to start.
This is one of the components related to the ignition circuit that is unique to only the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals and 1989 Turbo Trans Ams. It is not a stock auto store part and can cost over $300 or more.
This cam shaft sensor is brand new. It is 100% exactly like the GM sensor, and it even has the GM part number stamped on the shaft. One of the few parts that is aftermarket, yet has the GM part number on the shaft. This may be an instance where one supplier may be the actual manufacturer and they get packaged under various company names.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
4 CONNECTOR PLUGS & Hardware KIT with Buick Manual Holder
Because of the age of these cars, we are seeing more of the factory plastic wire connector tabs getting broken off on sensors as owners replace them over the years. Owners then revert to a plastic wire tie strap to secure the plug to the sensor.
Working with Casper’s Electronics, we had them make up a kit that includes the main connector ends which are subject to breakage. These connector plugs include one for the wastegate solenoid, the TPS sensor, the mass air flow sensor, and the special long narrow one that plugs into the coil pack module.
We also added 3 powder-coated black C-clips that GM used to secure the throttle cables to the throttle body and the wastegate actuator rod to the turbo. There is also additional internal hardware to secure the wire ends to the plugs included in the kit.
These are all items that are not easily found in any auto store.
As a bonus, we include a nice used original Buick blue vinyl manual holder for your glove box.
A great buy, and something you’ll appreciate the first time you need to use any item from this "emergency kit."
NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7161 TPS Sensor, #7045 Rebuilt Original AC DELCO Mass Air Flow Sensor, #7637 AC DELCO Coil Pack, and #7639 Aftermarket Ignition Module.
This is another great restoration kit.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING -
We hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving. It’s hard to believe that another year will soon be over.
Our cars are now 30 years old.
We have more Turbo Regal parts in the works. We are also working with A1 Cardone on another project. Currently we are waiting on a sample from them. We also have a project in the works with Spoolfool and are waiting for a sample. Watch for updates!
