Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 11-23-2016 –
THANKSGIVING M&Ms CONTEST RESULTS -
We have our two winners! We had a very good response to this Thanksgiving contest. The actual count of M&Ms was 1,940. Many of the guesses were under 1,000.
First Place, with a guess of 1,756, was Adam Pejouhy. Coming in Second Place, with a guess of 1,552, was Anthony Alessio. In both cases, winners used a single egg holder to determine how many M&Ms would fit in one egg holder and estimated their guess from that conclusion. Both are customers of ours.
The next M&Ms contest will be just prior to Christmas. Be sure to watch for it!
1986-1987 BUICK TURBO REGAL EGR VACUUM SOLENOID -
You will see this 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal EGR Vacuum Solenoid as another new part we now carry. Although it is not a GM part, it is an excellent replacement since it looks 100% identical to the factory solenoid.
Here is a bit of useless trivia that some 1986-1987 Turbo Regal owners may not know. Actually, this EGR Vacuum Solenoid has a serviceable filter in the one end. The round plastic cap at the one end pops off and you can remove the filter. Most replacement filters have a foam-style filter. I believe the original EGR Vacuum Solenoids may have a paper element filter. Many Turbo Regal owners may not know it exists.
A non-working EGR Vacuum Solenoid could trigger the service engine light and cause problems in certain states that have emission inspections.
PHOTO 1 - Shows a used EGR Vacuum Solenoid with the end cap removed. It also shows both styles of filters that were used in the EGR Vacuum Solenoid.
RARE TURBO REGAL RELATED LITERATURE -
As most of you realize, I have been involved with the Turbo Regal since 1987. With my background in the Pontiac GTO business, I knew immediately that I would always go after any original literature related to the Turbo Regal. I knew it would provide accurate background material for my writing on the topic.
I quickly realized that very little literature existed related specifically to the Turbo Regal. This has become more evident now, almost 30 years later, as locating original Turbo Regal literature is very hard to find.
With that said, a recent purchase from one of our customers I obtained three Buick-related literature brochures I had never seen before. One is the GM Options booklet dated October 1986. Prior to this, I had booklets dated November 1994, January 1996, April 1998, and March 2001. The problem with the later GM Production Option booklets is they have a lot more codes and options to look through that don’t pertain to the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. Also the later GM Production Option Booklets don’t show the 17-digit VIN number for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. Only the 1994 GM Production Options Booklet goes back to the 1986.
So, a 1986 GM Production Option booklet is the perfect one to have if you own a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. The 1986 Production Booklet has 38 pages. The 2001 GM Production Options booklet has 176 pages! Only the 1986 GM Production Options booklet covers all the 1984-1987 VIN numbers. This is probably the first booklet they did because the SPID label just started in 1984. I have no idea when GM stopped making these little useful GM Production Option booklets. Now you can obtain this the information on the internet. It has taken me almost thirty years to find this very early 1986 GM Production Options booklet. It’s a safe bet that the 1986 GM Production Options booklets are hard to find.
PHOTO 2 - We show all five GM Production Option Booklets from my personal collection that covers all GM passenger cars and light and medium trucks up though 2001. These were used as a quick method to decode the SPID trunk label. See Rare Parts section as we have copies of the 1986 GM Production Options Booklet for sale.
GNX SPID CODE -
For those of you lucky enough to own a real GNX, there is one code on the SPID label that confirms that it is a real GNX. What is confusing is the code assigned to the GNX package does not appears in any of the GM Production Option booklet until the March 2001 copy that I have. The code listed as the GNX package is “T2L.”
Adding to the confusing, that code “T2L” does not appear in some of the earlier GM Production Option booklets that I have. When the T2L code does appear, it is listed as “Identification ISO Symbols.” With that said, I have no idea why the T2L code did not appear in the GM Production Option booklets until March 2001. Since I don’t have any GM Production Option booklets between April 1998 and March 2001, I have no actual proof that the GNX T2L code showed up prior to March 2001. It appears that GM kept the T2L code open for any special models, such as the GNX model for Buick.
BUICK SNEAKS ONE PAST GM CORPORATE -
Make no mistake about it, by adding an intercooler to their little 3.8 engine, Buick created a stir at Chervolet. The Corvette, has always been the halo car in the GM car line and as such was always considered the fastest in the GM line up. Even back in the mid-sixties, GM decreed that with the 1967 GM models only the Corvette could have tri-power on their engines. If you are old enough to remember, you know the Pontiac GTO produced a good number of tri-power 389 engines in 1964 through 1966. That would be the last model year tri-power was an option except for the Corvette. In 1966 Pontiac enjoyed the biggest sales volume with the GTO, selling over 80,000 GTOs.
In some of the literature I recently bought, there was a very interesting single-page article dated the Fall of 1986. The title of the article says, “Inside Detroit.” I don’t know if it was from a local newspaper or something from an automotive magazine that specifically was sent to GM dealers. It is not on a standard size sheet. It may have been a flyer sent to GM dealerships. I know it went to GM dealers as it is addressed to a GM dealer on the reverse side. What is interesting is it talks about the Grand National screaming from 0 to 60 mph faster than any car made in America. It states the Grand National did it as quick as 4.9 seconds. It also states the similar year Chevrolet Corvette, on the other hand, takes 5.7 seconds. The same article mentions several foreign cars, but it’s the listing of the Corvette in writing that makes it interesting.
PHOTO 3 - We show this interesting article titled “Inside Detroit.” This is the first time I have ever seen this article. While the Turbo Buick had its flaws, the engineers created something under the hood that really caught on with the public. The Grand National had the guts to back it up and the Bad to the Bone sinister look. The engineers must be happy today to see how collectible their “baby” has become, with the crown jewel being the GNX. This single-page article really says it all. See Rare Parts section as we have copies of this for sale.
CLEVER MARKETING -
Another unusual brochure I recently acquired advertises the new Gentex Automatic Day/Night Glare Control Mirror. The 4-page brochure does not have a date on it, so I have no idea when this brochure was printed. What I found interesting can be seen in photo 4. Highlighted in the new mirror they were marketing shows what obviously is a 1987 Grand National. It is missing the emblem in the grille but there is no denying it is a Grand National.
PHOTO 4 - We show the front cover of this 4-page brochure that shows the sinister Grand National in the mirror reflection. This is the perfect car to promote the new Automatic Day/Night Glare Control Mirror.
MORE ORIGINAL PALLEX GREY SEAT MATERIAL -
See Rare Parts section for the various lengths of original grey pallex material we have available this week. We have added a few more sections. As of this writing, I still do not have the black pallex.
TURBO LIMITED ORIGINAL PRIMA GREY CLOTH MATERIAL -
In my search for pallex material, I came across a source that had several feet of the original plush grey cloth material that was used in the 1987 Turbo Regal Limited that had the grey cloth interior. This grey material is different than the regular grey cloth material that was used in the regular 1987 Turbo-Ts that had the grey interior. See the Rare Parts section for the Limited Prima grey cloth material, as I have six feet of it available.

Two jobs that fit the description of never ending quickly come to mind. Number one is raking leaves in the wind. Number two is wiping brake dust from alloy wheels.
THREE ANNIVERSARIES THIS WEEK -
It was Friday, November 22,1963 that President JFK was killed. If you were alive then, you probably have a vivid memory of where you were that day. I know I do as on November 20, Wednesday of that week, I ran away from home. (My school work had suffered as I was working a lot of hours for my Dad. I had to make car payments on my new 1963 Ford Galaxie). That Friday I was driving through downtown St Louis, Missouri when I heard that JFK had been shot. The newspaper carriers were yelling out the news from their trucks. I would travel on what has become the famous Route 66. I would be arrested just outside of Gallup, New Mexico that Saturday morning. I would spend three days in jail waiting for my Dad to fly out.
It was 40 years ago on November 21,1976 that the movie Rocky was released. This put Sylvester Stallone on his way to stardom.
One side note, if you have ever used or seen the product ZDDPlus, that label design was created by a personal friend of ours, and she was actually a high school classmate of Sylvester Stallone.
On another side note, the other week when I was looking through some papers that my parents had saved, I found a small envelope. That small envelope contained a record of all the expenses my parents incurred related to me running away. It included air fare for my Dad, phone calls, gas, and the cost to ship my car back by freight car to Pennsylvania. The grand total was $1,425.58. The major expense was the cost to ship my 1963 Ford back by freight car. That cost alone was $515. That may not sound like much today, but in 1963 this was a lot of money. I had to work a long time to pay my parents back. The days I missed at school also cost me dearly as I got zeros in all my classes, forcing me to go to summer school that following summer. I was a hero among my classmates as no one had ever done anything like this in the past. On a bright note, I was still allowed to drive to school every day.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPLACEMENT EGR VACUUM SOLENOID
Over time, the EGR vacuum solenoid can fail, and trigger a code "32”.
The EGR is disabled at wide open throttle for maximum performance. The purpose of the EGR system is to lower nitrogen levels that are released into the atmosphere from the engine's exhaust. This is accomplished by decreasing the combustion temperature.
The EGR vacuum solenoid pulses the EGR valve many times a second to send the precise amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold.
If the EGR vacuum solenoid fails, the diagnostic switch in the EGR solenoid will trigger a code 32.
In states that have emission inspections, if this solenoid fails, it can cause your car to fail the emission test.
The EGR vacuum solenoid is located on the driver’s side of the engine, by the side of the valve cover. It sits behind the EGR valve.
It’s also best to check all the related vacuum lines to EGR vacuum solenoid for any cracks due to age or heat.
This replacement part is exactly like the GM original, there is no difference.

SLIP-ON GREY & BLACK
FRONT SEAT COVERS (2) and SEAT BELT COVERS (2) SET
With the price and limited availability of original grey and black pallex material for Grand Nationals and GNXs, it is important to protect your original seats from any dirt, wear, everyday mishaps and UV rays.
After much research, we found a high-quality set of grey and black slip-over seat covers for the bucket seat format. The bucket seat covers (2) are a one-piece design for each bucket seat.
Included with the set of covers are two small covers for the seat belts, if you want to use them.
The set does NOT include covers for the headrests.
These have been tested for fit by one of our long-time customers. After trying out two different brands of seat covers, this is brand he picked for quality and fitment.
Installation is quite simple and requires no tools or mechanical skills! You don't even have to remove the headrest to install the seat cover.
The seat covers are secured by elastic straps and velcro.
The center of each seat cover is a dark shade of grey with black on the sides of the cover, which is a very similar design to the original Grand National seats. These also look good in a Turbo Regal with a grey interior.
The material is 65% polyester and 35% synthetic rubber, and is machine washable.
The seat covers are plain - no logos or printing. They provide superior protection against wear, spills, moisture, and UV rays. These seat covers are also water resistant.
Our other photos show the cover on a Grand National seat right after they were put on. Any wrinkles clear once the covers are on for a while.
NOTE - The colors in our photos on our website may not represent these covers exactly due to computer monitor differences.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal and 1989 Turbo Trans Am -
CAM SHAFT SENSOR
Over time, the cam shaft sensor (cam sensor) can develop wear issues, which can affect the signal it sends to the ignition module and then to the ECM. Its purpose is to provide a reference point for the cam shaft. The ECM must see a signal from the cam shaft sensor for the engine to start.
This is one of the components related to the ignition circuit that is unique to only the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals and 1989 Turbo Trans Ams. It is not a stock auto store part and can cost over $300 or more.
This cam shaft sensor is brand new. It is 100% exactly like the GM sensor, and it even has the GM part number stamped on the shaft. One of the few parts that is aftermarket, yet has the GM part number on the shaft. This may be an instance where one supplier may be the actual manufacturer and they get packaged under various company names.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
4 CONNECTOR PLUGS & Hardware KIT with Buick Manual Holder
Because of the age of these cars, we are seeing more of the factory plastic wire connector tabs getting broken off on sensors as owners replace them over the years. Owners then revert to a plastic wire tie strap to secure the plug to the sensor.
Working with Casper’s Electronics, we had them make up a kit that includes the main connector ends which are subject to breakage. These connector plugs include one for the wastegate solenoid, the TPS sensor, the mass air flow sensor, and the special long narrow one that plugs into the coil pack module.
We also added 3 powder-coated black C-clips that GM used to secure the throttle cables to the throttle body and the wastegate actuator rod to the turbo. There is also additional internal hardware to secure the wire ends to the plugs included in the kit.
These are all items that are not easily found in any auto store.
As a bonus, we include a nice used original Buick blue vinyl manual holder for your glove box.
A great buy, and something you’ll appreciate the first time you need to use any item from this "emergency kit."

and 1982-1987 FIREBIRD/CAMARO -
POWDER-COATED GLOSSY BLACK FRONT ROTORS (2) SET
Because of the hub design on the stock front brake rotors it’s difficult to find powder-coated front rotors for your Turbo Regal.
Bare metal rotors quickly turn to rust. You spend the money for nice wheels only to have rust appear on the front brake rotors. Even if the rotors have a zinc coating, it quickly wears off.
Our source custom made a template to protect certain areas from the powder coating, so the coating does not go into the center bearing area or the exposed brake pad area. They also powder coat the entire edge (lip), which is usually the first area to rust. A high-heat glossy black powder coating is used.
The end result is a good looking rotor that stays good looking.
You pay anywhere from $60 to $75 a pair for bare metal rotors. For just a few dollars more you can buy these brand new powder-coated glossy black front rotors.
NOTE - If you are interested in another color, contact us. We may be able to do a custom color set of rotors for you.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING -
We wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. We are closed this Thursday for Thanksgiving and Friday. Enjoy the holiday.

1982-1988 G-Body (Including Buick Turbo Regal)
and 1982-1987 FIREBIRD/CAMARO -
POWDER-COATED GLOSSY BLACK FRONT ROTORS (2) SET

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
