MORE ON THE SALESPERSONS HANDY POCKET GUIDE -
In the 11-07-2012 Turbo Regal Inner Circle in Photo 1 we showed the exterior paint brochures for the 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987 Buick models. In that issue we mentioned that for 1985 Buick actually broke the models down into 3 separate exterior color brochures. In that issue we only showed the 1985 version that featured the Regal model.
PHOTO 1 - In this photo we show all 3 of the 1985 Buick Exterior Color brochures that represent the entire 1985 Buick model line up.
As we mentioned in a previous Inner Circle, these Salespersons Handy Pocket Guide came in a matching color vinyl holder that matched the cover of the larger 3-ring Dealer Album for each year.
PHOTO 2 - In this photo we show the vinyl holder for the 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987 Salespersons Handy Pocket Guide. (This is the correct wording GM used to describe these pocket guides). You can see how the Hawk trademark was used, striking a different pose on each cover design. In each case, the color of these vinyl holders matched the color of the full-size Dealer Albums for each year. These Salespersons Handy Pocket Guides are extremely difficult to find for sale today.
A LOOK AT OLDER GRAND NATIONAL PLASTIC MODELS -
By far, the most popular plastic Grand National model was the Monogram 1:24 scale model that came out in 1988 in various package schemes. We covered this model in earlier Turbo Regal Inner Circles.
Monogram also released another model format called “Mini Exacts®.” The two versions that would interest Buick Grand National owners would be the single 1:87 HO scale Grand National and the 1:87 HO scale 6-pack which featured 5 other important cars during that time frame.
PHOTO 3 - In this photo we show both versions of the Monogram 1:87 HO scale models. The photo on the left shows the single Grand National and the photo on the right shows the 6 pack. The six pack featured the Z-28 Camaro, Shelby 427 S/C Cobra, the Buick Grand National on the top row, and on the lower row the Porsche 911 Slant Nose, the BMW 325i, and the Mazda RX7.
I am somewhat familiar with BMWs since we used to have a gorgeous 1987 325is model. I believe the one in this package is really based on the early M3 model judging from the ground effects and rear spoiler. This Gift Pack, as it is referred to on the package, is #3 so it would appear other Gift Packs were offered back then as well. According to the box, this was made in 1990 and of course was produced in China.
Not to be outdone, Ertl Collectibles, under their American Muscle series, made a 1:64 scale 1987 Buick Grand National kit. This version was one you had to assembly using the supplied mini screwdriver included. A clever idea I suppose at the time.
PHOTO 4 - For whatever reason, Ertl Company packaged this 1:64 scale Buick Grand National two different ways. One package design was vertical and the other package design was horizontal. We show both versions in this photo. According to the box, this was done in 1999 and production was again done in China. It left the assembly up to the customer to complete!
IN QUICK REVIEW -
In my opinion, none of these mini cars have really gained much in value over the years and can be found from time to time on ebay and other sources. They are great to have in your personal collections, and make nice Christmas gifts for any Turbo Buick enthusiast. Best of all, none of them will leak any oil!
OUR HIGH SCHOOL MADE THE NEWS -
Unless you have been under a rock this past week, the big scandal in Washington DC has been centered around two of our four-star generals. It turns out the Khawam twins, who now reside in Florida, actually graduated from the same small high school my wife Eileen and I did. They graduated in 1993. Back when I graduated from Lower Moreland in 1965 and my wife graduated in 1967, our senior classes numbered only about 100. The school is located in Huntingdon Valley, about 20 miles north of Philadelphia, Pennyslvania.
Not the PR Lower Moreland was looking for I am sure, but PR nevertheless!
REPRODUCTION GNX SUSPENSION - NOW AVAILABLE -
Pete Hoffman has a limited number of the reproduction GNX Suspension Systems available. These are the Richard Clark systems that he has had made locally.
They are nearly exact to the originals, down to the welds and material used. They come with complete detailed instructions.
