11-11-2020 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 11-11-2020 -

OUR HALLOWEEN M & M CONTEST WINNERS -

Taking first place with a guess of 1,135 was David Richardson. Dave hails from Ontario Canada and has been getting my weekly Inner Circle mailings for about 12 years. He is currently building a Regal that will be powered by a V8. Being from Canada if he hits the Pennsylvania lottery every US dollar is worth about $1.35 in Canadian money. Be interesting to see if he hits on any of the lottery tickets he has won. Coming in second place is Ralph Shelley with his guess of 987. Ralph still owns his 1987 Grand National he bought in 1987. He was a salesperson and used the Grand National as a daily driver until 2004. He has over 350,000 miles on it. That is a lot of seat time in the same car! Ralph used to live in California now resides in Arizona. Good thing if he resided anywhere in the northeast his car would never have lasted that long! The actual count was 1,420 M&Ms in the container. Congrats to both winners. The next M&M contest will be for Thanksgiving.

TURBO REGAL, GSX, AND GS BLACK POWDER COATED STAINLESS LICENSE PLATE FRAMES WITH TAG LINE DECAL -

In Photo 1 we show the actual tag line in the font style they will appear on the license plate frames. Several decals are in 2-color as pictured. These are currently in the works and we expect to be shipping orders for them next week. It's best to call our office if you want a license plate frame and the new owners manual holder as both can be shipped for a lower price than if you let the website compute the cost. Also this applies if you want to buy several license plate frames with different tag lines. The shipping would be the same for several frames by placing your order by phone.

The decal material is a high quality 3m product IJ35 that will not peel off. It is fade resistant. We have several other tag lines in the works for other GM cars. We have several for the Pontiac GTO. Also one for the 442 Oldsmobile. Watch for updates.

PHOTO 1 - We show each of the new taglines related to the Turbo Regal, GSX, and the GS. We have 9 different ones to choose from. We have noted which ones are in 2 colors. Also the actual font style varies as well. Example the font style for the High Output V6 matches the 3.8 SFI hood emblems font style.

Below is the pricing with the part number for the different tag lines available on the license plate frame or additional decals only can be purchased as well. These may not yet be on our website. It is best to call in your order especially if you are buying the owners manual holder or more than one license plate frame. The shipping would be adjusted accordingly since these items are under a pound each.

SPI/SPID/TRUNK ID LABEL -

Probably the most important decal on your Turbo Regal can be found on the inside of your trunk lid. I usually call it the trunk ID label. Others call it the SPI label or the SPID label. SPI is probably the most accepted name as it stands for Service Parts Identification. It also states ”Do not remove”.

Most readers fully understand the importance of the SPI label or as I refer to it as the trunk ID label. It's a format GM used for many years and possibly still uses to this day to note options and features installed in a specific vehicle. Based on my junkyard experience this SPI label varied in format over the years and location. In some cases it is attached to the pressed board that hides the spare tire or in trucks it is stuck to the inside of the glove box. Some GM cars it's in the door jamb area. The label size and font type has varied over the years.

To a typical car owner they probably don’t pay much attention to this label. Basically it's the blueprint for your car. It clarifies not only the options in your car, but what springs your car has and features such as aluminum braces versus steel braces. With the knowledge we have today it would have been nice had Buick used aluminum bumper braces on every Turbo Regal. It would have eliminated rust and cut weight. Two things that no Turbo Regal would have objected to! Even if Buick classified the aluminum bumper supports as an option and put a price tag on them!

There have always been two schools of thought when buying a Turbo Regal brand new. Dealers of course, wanted to push the heavily optioned examples as that increased their profit per vehicle. Plus at trade in time a well optioned vehicle will bring more money. Grand Nationals were usually heavily optioned. The SPI label on the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regal consisted of 13 columns of codes. The 1984-1985 Regal had 14 or 15 columns. The 1984 and 1985 Regals had a wider label than the 1986-1987 SPI labels. The 1984 and 1985 label also has a clear lamination over them. The 1986 and 1987 SPI labels had no lamination over the SPI label.

Generally the 1984 and 1985 SPI label would be mounted towards the drivers side of the inside trunk lid. The 1986-1987 SPI label would be mounted more towards the passenger side of the inside of the trunk lid. In every case the letter codes were in alphabetic order. They would run 4 to 6 rows deep depending on the number of options and features built into the car. Another code near the bottom of every SPI label would be the code for the paint. The top line would have the 17 digit VIN and a series of numbers that I do not know what they mean. Each had a GM part number for the actual label in the bottom right hand corner.

In today's world and this is strictly my opinion a bare bones low optioned Turbo Regal especially a Grand National would be as valuable as a well optioned Grand National. Finding a low optioned Grand National today is very rare. Going by memory I remember buying and selling a 1986 Grand National that had no tilt and crank windows. Tilt column was almost standard in the 1980s.

Again when I was buying them I never bought a Turbo Regal that was missing that critical SPI label. I remember one Turbo Regal I bought where the seller had replaced the trunk lid but had kept the original trunk lid. I had the label cut out of the original trunk lid so I could keep it with the car. Besides the codes pertaining specifically for the Turbo Regal it also had the 17 digit VIN number. That label can be duplicated today by ECS, but only if you have an original so they can copy it.

My last personal Turbo Regal was the 1987 TurboT, which had very few options. The SPI label had an even 13 columns 4 rows deep for 52 codes total. Finding a Turbo Regal with under 50 codes and you found a rare example.

The other week we heard from a customer who attended an estate auction where the owner had passed away. The deceased owner had bought all 3 Turbo Regals brand new. Unfortunately they sat outside for about 20 years, somewhat neglected. The crown jewel of the 3 cars was a 1987 light blue Turbo-T hardtop. Bench seat, column shift, crank windows with only 47 codes! The Turbo-T only had 27,000 original miles on it. A worthy investment since it was all original and a rare color. Looking at the upper end of codes anything above 95 codes is a well optioned Turbo Regal. You would see about 8 rows of codes across the 13 columns.

Another way to look at it is, the less options that less things that can go wrong! Example power windows? Are they really “power”? A 5-year old could turn the hand crank handle for the window up and down quicker than you pushing on the power window button waiting for the window to respond. Power antenna? You know the day is coming when that tightly wound plastic cable will surely break leading to a two hour project or longer of removing the power antenna out from under the fender and reinstalling it. Using as few curse words as possible.

To a GNX owner the one critical code on the SPI label is T2L. That code signifies the GNX package.

So my question is: Does your Turbo Regal have less than 47 codes? Send me a picture of the SPI label and history of the car. I would be curious if your Turbo Regal has fewer than 47 codes. On a similar note if your Turbo Regal has 100 codes or more send me a picture. My email is [email protected]

Concerning the various SPI labels on the Turbo Regals what I wrote here is to the best of my knowledge and based on the various SPI labels I have in my collection. As many of you know when we had Molly come to my birthday event and the one big Reunion event at the airbase we had him autograph the actual SPI label. We had a rubber stamp made that said Molly Signature Series for the one event. By autographing the actual SPI label it made it specific and uniform on each Turbo Regal. Unfortunately, I did not keep track of how many Molly did autograph between the two events. We even had a few customers who could not bring their car actually brought their trunk lid to the events for Molly to sign!

If I was to take a guess I would say that Molly autographed between 200 and 250 over the two events. I also had him autograph any Turbo Regals I had sitting for sale. Time will tell what his autograph does to the value.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows a typical 1984-1985 SPI label with 14 columns. The top right photo shows a similar SPI label and it has 15 columns. Both have the same GM part number! I am unsure which years used which format for the number of columns. The bottom left photo shows a typical 1986-1987 Regal SPI label and no lamination with 13 columns. The bottom right photo shows a rare autographed by Molly SPI label from my 60th birthday bash 2007. What is interesting about this one is the high number of codes 86! The WE2 code shows it was a Grand National.

As we noted GM was not consistent with the placement of the SPI label on other GM car and truck models.

PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows one I removed from the glove box of a Chevrolet 1990 S-10 truck. The top right photo is a bit unusual. I spotted this one on the inner plastic front drivers fender of a 1986 Pontiac Fiero! The bottom left and bottom right I found on various GM trunk spare tire covers. In one case it is upside down to the jacking directions! Again these are strictly my findings and not reflective of all the various different SPI labels GM used over the years. I am merely showing you the reader that GM was not consistent where they would attach the SPI label.

NOTE ABOUT SPI TRUNK LABELS -

If you have a clear picture of your original SPI label we can get a copy made for you through ECS who is fully licensed by GM. Long as we can read the codes. ThePart number on our website is 7835 and 7836 depending on the year. Good investment as originals can gradually fade as years pass similar to what is happens to the two critical door jamb decals. Any label that shows the 17 digit VIN number is critical to have and be readable.

NINE PIECE TRUNK KITS IN STOCK -

Great winter project is to install the optional factory 9 piece trunk kit. Every time we order them it takes the company 8 to 10 weeks to get them made and shipped to us. We just got a small shipment of both the grey and black kits this week. Contact our office 2315-766-1611 if you want one of these kits. The grey is factory correct. However, the black kit is just as popular. Keep in mind the factory kits never included a cover for the inside trunk lid which would hide the SPI decal. This 9 piece kit is far superior over the $3 trunk carpet Buick put on the trunk floor.

I remember on all the cars I was buying I would always trim the factory carpet so it fit better around the spare tire well. Again if you want one of these kits in either black or grey call the office now otherwise it can be 8 to 10 weeks before we get our next shipment.

RESTORATION CHALLENGES -

I know some of our readers are doing a major restoration on their Turbo Regal. This has been made a bit easier in recent years as more and more restoration parts have been made available for these cars. Adding fuel to the surge in restoring the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, is the fact the values have been increasing each year. Cars I sold in the early and mid 1990s with under 20,000 miles on them are now worth double what I sold them for back then. Like anything else you need to have a complete plan, the funds to complete the project, and if you have a spouse their blessing as well. Not to mention a great skill set, and adequate inside space to do the project.

I admire anyone that has accomplished a complete restoration where a car that most would deem as a parts car has been returned to show condition. The challenge becomes even greater when you consider what is involved if the vehicle is extremely rare, few if any restoration parts exist, and the vehicle is a bus that is over 60 years old!

In my travels this past weekend I came across a garage out in the country that had several large buses that were going to be modified into RV type of format. In recent years this has become quite popular converting retired buses into an RV with all the perks.

PHOTO 4 - The first two photos show a 1949 Flxible bus. The second two photos show a 1950 Flxible bus. Both to me are a work of art especially the curved back end.

REBUILT WIPER MOTOR UPDATE -

These are now in stock for immediate delivery. You must call our office as we have less than 5 left. These are a bargain if you shop around and see what is available from other vendors and auto stores. I had Cardone find a total of 10 original wiper motor cores for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. I bought all 10 that they are rebuilding for us. These are quite scarce. There is no core charge with these so I am probably thinking Cardone will discontinue them from their parts. I am not sure if they will be on our website since only 10 are available. Like the recent power steering pumps I think these will also sell out quickly.

You must call our office 215-766-1611 or email [email protected] The price is $99.95 each. The part number is 7468. While you may never drive your Turbo Regal in the rain, most state laws require your car to have working wipers! You will need to reinstall your intermittent wiper option and washer pump assembly. We used to sell these same ones several years ago.

ON THE NEWS FRONT -

We recently secured a deal with Zip Products, one of the major vendors for the Corvette market. They have an exclusive arrangement for selling our Kirban Kwik shifters for the C5 and C6 Corvettes. These shifters have a lifetime warranty! We are close to making an exclusive deal for our 1993-2002 Camaro/Firebird Kirban Kwik 6-speed shifters. I plan to shop our Mustang 6-speed shifters next to see if we can get a company on board. Watch for updates.

RECENT PASSINGS -

One of the best loved TV personalities died this past Sunday Alex Trebeck. I doubt they will find a replacement for Alex that was as well liked as he was. Often I would find myself guessing at some of the answers on Jeopardy. It has been my mother-in-law's favorite TV show for many years. I was always amazed whenever they had a category on sports or football it would stump the entire panel.

More local to us Len Barry died. In the 1960s rock ‘n roll was in its glory in Philadelphia. Len Barry was the lead singer for the group Dovells. The group's big hit got to Number 2 on the BIllboard chart “The Bristol Stomp”. Their next big hit was “You can’t sit down”. Bristol stomp was based on the town about 30 minutes from us.

Philadelphia was a hotbed for early rock ‘n roll talent from the 1950s and 1960s. We might have only had AM radio for the most part but a lot of artists and groups hailed from my area. I am sure I mentioned this before. I bought a 1965 GTO from Chubby Checkers brother years ago.

We plan to keep running this list of Turbo Regal mechanics for a while. As we get new additions they will appear at the end. Please if you use a good mechanic send us the info to share with our readers. They do not need to be a dedicated Turbo Regal mechanic.

GOOD NEWS - WE ARE ACCEPTING CLASSIFIED ADS -

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.

Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need to be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.

Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,400 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,400 potential buyers.

Ads submitted properly by the previous Sunday would appear that next Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. Ads must be submitted by email to - [email protected]

Payment by credit card must be done by phone to our office 215-766-1611.

NOTE - IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE THE BUICK RARE PARTS SECTION -

If you are not able to see the Buick Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the website. You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about. To subscribe simply email – [email protected] - to get our free weekly Inner Circle email.

The Buick Rare Parts section is only viewed by those that subscribe. Subscription is free, so complaints on what I write are nonexistent!

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

“A BOOST OF BUICK PERFORMANCE”
OWNER’S MANUAL HOLDER

Usually the more expensive GM cars have a nice holder for their Owner’s Manual.

Originally Buick put all the documents in a plain clear plastic bag. Since these turbo cars didn’t come with a holder in the car, we’ve designed one.

Our black vinyl Owner’s Manual holder measures 6-3/4" x 10" and fits perfectly in your glove box.

The words “A BOOST OF BUICK PERFORMANCE” appear in silver below the flap.

There are two business card holders on the flap. You can insert your insurance company agent’s business card or your mechanic’s business card.

This holder is great for storing the Owner’s Manual, Warranty cards, insurance papers, service records, etc.

It also makes a great gift item for any car enthusiast.
An excellent protection for your Owner’s Manual and documents.

7918 - “A BOOST OF BUICK PERFORMANCE” Owner’s Manual Holder - $14.95

GM LICENSED -
“BUICK MOTORSPORTS” FENDER COVER

The “BUICK MOTORSPORTS” logo is silk screened in white, red and tan on a 34″ x 22″ black fender cover and is GM licensed.

It is made from a non-slip PVC foam cushioned material, so it won’t slide off the fender. Because the surface is non-slip, it holds your tools in place and minimizes potential chips and scratches. It resists most automotive fluids, such as motor oil, brake fluid, coolant, etc.

This recognizable logo is sure to appeal to any Buick owner. We offer it individually as Part #7547 or as a pair Part #7548.

These fender covers are a must-have addition to your garage items, and can also be stored in the trunk in case you need to protect the fenders while away from the garage.

Our photos show the fender cover flat and as it appears folded.

This fender cover also makes a unique gift for any Buick enthusiast or mechanic.

7547 - GM Licensed -
“BUICK MOTORSPORTS” Fender Cover - $29.95

7548 - GM Licensed -

BUTYL TAPE - 5/16” DIAMETER 10-FOOT ROLL -

This butyl tape is black, 5/16" diameter, and comes in a 10-foot roll.

The list of uses for this product is endless. Butyl tape has a strong adhesive and excellent sealing effect. It has very good waterproof performance. It is a "tape type" sealer used by glass shops to seal windshields and rear window glass.

It is not available in most auto stores, which is why we now carry it. Its unique feature of controlled compressibility allows easy installation and yet will not squeeze out when pressed. I have been using it for a variety of projects for many years.

We include it with several of the parts we sell, such as the LED Third Brake Light and the foam filter for the wastegate solenoid. In both cases, it is used to hold the part in place. It’s ideal to fill small holes in the trunk. Buick used it to seal the quarter windows.

If you have a section of wind noise on the weatherstrip seal to the door glass, simply put a section of butyl tape between the molding and the weatherstrip to "puff" out that section of the weatherstrip. The problem is solved. If you have T-Tops and are replacing the metal T section, it’s ideal to use this between the T metal bar and the roof area.

It’s ideal to help seal any moldings in place or lose trim.

Every owner should have a roll of butyl tape in their garage or workshop.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
