Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 10-26-2016 -
NEW PARTS AND IDEAS KEEP COMING -
We have several new products that will soon be available.
The latest part we just did is the powder-coated glossy black front brake rotors for the Turbo Regals featured in this Inner Circle. The idea came to me when I was getting new wheels put on a car I acquired to be one of my daily drivers. I spent the money for new alloy spoke wheels only to see rusted brake rotors behind it. So, I bought all new brake rotors and had them powder-coated glossy black.
The Turbo Regals I discovered are not simply a top hat style rotor, but includes the bearing hub and the wheel studs. Powder coating can be done, but you have to make temp plates so the coating does not coat the bearing hub internals or the disk pad surface. You also have to put plugs on the wheel studs so the coating does not get on them. Our source did all the temp plates so he can now powder coat front Turbo Regal rotors. He also does the entire lip edge area, which is also prone to rust.
Now you can have glossy black powder-coated rotors instead of bare metal that turns to rust behind your nice set of alloy wheels.
Although you can buy coated rotors, most have like a zinc-like coating which doesn’t last. Any time you can eliminate rust, it’s worth doing it. The cost factor is only a few dollars more than what you would spend for bare metal front rotors.
A LITLE BIT OF HISTORY CONCERNING FRONT DISK BRAKES -
One of the first U.S. production cars to offer disk brakes was the Studebaker. The model year was 1963.
Disc brakes was an option on certain Studebaker models, and years ago my wife and I had two 1963 GT Hawk models. I can’t recall if both had disk brakes up front, but I remember one of them did have that option. One of our GT Hawks was quite unusual, since it had blue and white vinyl seats in it. The exterior color was white.
In many ways Studebaker was ahead of the curve in automotive technology. It’s unfortunate the 1960s would see their demise as a car company. I can recall having owned a total of 7 different Studebakers back in my younger days.
Corvette, from what I have read, offered disk brakes first in their 1965 model. The A-body GM cars started with dual piston disk brake calipers in 1968 and used that format in 1969 as well. Later they would switch to the single piston style brake caliper. I can recall having several GTOs with the disk dual brake calipers.
PHOTO 1 - We show front and back photos of the new powder-coated black glossy Turbo Regal front rotors. These fit all 1982 to 1988 G-body cars, and also all 1982-1987 Firebirds and Camaros.
KEY CODE KNOCK OUTS -
Most of my readers are familiar with the way GM coded keys for the Turbo Regals. Back when the Turbo Regals were new, the key code was stamped on the knock out portion of each key. If this portion was not removed, you hardly had any room to insert your key ring.
Since I go to various junk yards, I am always looking for the unusual items. I do this for research even if it has nothing to do with the G-body car market. Many of my readers have purchased their Turbo Regal used and, in most cases this small piece of history, is long gone.
PHOTO 2 - We show a total of 5 different key knock outs that I came across in junk cars. Usually they are in small brown envelopes, as shown here. Each of these brown envelopes has a total of 4 knock outs. They contain 2 rectangle and 2 half-moon-style knock outs. On the two pictured with the key rings, 1 only has the 2 half-moon-style knock outs and the other has both the rectangle ones and the half moon ones. While none of these would be the proper code for your Turbo Regal, they are listed under Rare Parts for sale for those select few owners wanting one of the toughest smallest items to have for their car. These are all taken from GM cars from the 1990s.
GRAND NATIONAL PALLEX SEAT MATERIAL UPDATE -
As I write this issue, I am still waiting on my order of original grey pallex material. My source has to dig it out from his collection. So, if you have a request with me already, please sit tight. Once it is in my hands I will email you to make payment. I have to be patient with this source.
If you want to purchase this original 1986-1987 Grand National grey pallex material, email me direct - denniskirban.com
I am selling it by a yard, which comes 56 inches wide. It takes 1 yard to do the grey insert portion of both front Grand National bucket seats. It is the same material GM used on the upper portion of the Grand National front door panels. You would need another yard to cover both of them. You would have some material left over, but I am only offering this very rare material by the yard.
To my knowledge, no one has recreated or reproduced the original grey pallex material for these cars. While several reproductions exist and are worthy reproductions, they are no exact match to the originals.
I am also trying to locate the black pallex. Watch for word on this. I first need to make sure I get the grey from this source.
MY STORY OF A RED METAL TOOL BOX -
Last week we wrote about the GM commercial where they tested the Ford truck bed versus the GM truck bed using a red metal tool box to see what damage would occur. It triggered a fond memory for me about a red metal tool box.
If you have my book, “Kirban’s Guide to 1986-1987 Turbo Regals,” the dedication page in that book is to Bill Kernen. He was my personal mechanic from the early 1970s until his passing in January of 1991.
When we moved into our house on Sugarbottom Road in Furlong he had a small two-bay garage about 3 miles from our house. It was an old-style garage with a pit instead of a lift. In the mid-1980s he sold his shop. He then worked for me full time as we had 3 tow trucks to keep on the road.
Around the same time, I started to restore a 1964 GTO that I pulled out of the woods. Big Bill was an excellent mechanic - between his profanity and tools, nobody could match his skills. In the late-1980s he bought a small Spanish-style bungalow in Homosassa Springs, Florida. His wife however, remained up north. He would winter in Florida and then drive his Midas Motor home back to our place in the Spring, living in his motor home on our driveway.
These were great times for us. Some years he would meet me at the GS Nationals in the Spring on his trip north from Florida. He would go with me every summer to both the GTO and POCI National meets. Sometimes the two National meets would be two weeks apart, so we would hit junk yards in between. He had this old beat up red tool box that we would take on these trips.
In January of 1991 he passed away down in Florida. His wife quickly sold his bungalow, complete with all the contents. That Spring I went to Florida to bring back one of the many Turbo Regals I was buying, and swung by his old bungalow. I knocked on the door of his old house and a lady answered. I explained who I was and provided enough information to convince her I knew the past owner. I asked if I could look around the garage and she said yes. Once I entered the garage, I immediately saw that beat up metal red tool box that we took on every road trip.
I told the lady I would go down to Walmart buy a similar tool box and give her $100 cash for the beat up tool box. Her answer surprised me - she said no. Stunned I upped my offer to $200 and a new tool box and still the answer was no. So, I left disappointed. I next stopped at the local donut shop as Big Bill always told me about. He went there every morning. I spoke to the owner and gave him $20 and said this is to cover some donuts for Big Bill’s friends that would join him for morning coffee.
I later wrote about this incident in my monthly GTO newsletter. One of my New Jersey customers who owned a trucking business that went up and down the east coast called me. He wanted the address of the lady in Florida and said he would get the red tool box for me. Later that summer at the 1991 GTO/ Turbo Buick Reunion Event, that GTO customer presented me with the original red tool box as a gift. True story!
To this day I have no idea what he gave for the red tool box, but it has a special place in my pole building as a reminder to the many road trips that I made with Big Bill and his red metal tool box.
PHOTO 3 - Shows 2 photos of Big Bill’s red metal tool box in my pole building. Bill had put those decals on the inside lid, and are all original.
HALLOWEEN WILL SOON BE HERE -
In recent years Halloween seems to have become a very big event. I imagine every dentist in the country loves this event!
In my personal collection I have 2 of the very rare full-size five-foot-tall Maxine figures. Maxine is the trademark “Crabby Lady” for Hallmark Greeting cards. You can buy various small versions of Maxine and her cute little white dog at various Hallmark stores. The full-size Maxines were store displays and were never offered for sale. They were a marketing tool for Hallmark about a dozen years ago. Today they are very difficult to find and have become very valuable. The other week I took Maxine around in my car and posed her at the various places Eileen and I frequent.
PHOTO 4 - The top left photo was taken at Oaks Restaurant where we eat breakfast most days. The owner, Cecil, is on the left and Maxine is on the right. The top right photo shows Maxine at the counter at Yum Yums. The bottom left photo shows Maxine at the local Auto store ready to wait on the next customer. The bottom right photo shows Maxine trying to figure out how to operate the scale behind the counter at our local Post Office.
DOOR JAMB VIN DECALS -
We already have Corvette Central and Zip Products offering the VIN door jamb decals to their market, so if you own a Corvette you can order the decal through them or us. I am sure before long other Corvette companies will soon follow.
If you have an older GM car, 1969-1983, we can get the door jamb VIN decal(s) made for you. Contact our office for details.
The years 1969 through 1974 only had a single blue VIN decal on the door jamb. The 1975 and up went to the tamper-proof white paper. The price for the single blue door VIN decal the cost is $49 and $7 Priority Mail. The 1975, 1976 and 1977 was a single white decal the cost is $60 plus $7 Priority Mail. The 1977 and up requires 2 decals and is priced at $120 plus $7 Priority Mail.
Some companies still sell blank VIN decals and simply tell owners to find a typewriter and type their information onto the VIN decal. This makes little sense since the font style would not be anywhere near correct.
Only one source can make them 100% correct and it is the company we use, ECS Automotive Concepts. He has chosen our company to work with the GM market for all 1969 through 1989 cars. We will keep you posted as we get more GM mail order companies on board, offering the door VIN decals to their market.
CHUCK BERRY TURNS 90 YEARS YOUNG -
Chuck Berry turned 90 years old last week. Several other rock and roll icons from the early days are all in their 80s. Fats Domino is 88, Little Richard is a young 83, followed by Jerry Lee Lewis at 81. This group accounted for most of the original early rock and roll sounds from the start. My wife and I have been fortunate enough to have seen Chuck and Fats in concert years ago.
TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -
If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]
TIP FROM KIRBAN -
One of the best suspension improvements you can make is to install the 4-piece rear seat brace kit, part #1586. The difference is nothing short of amazing once you take your Turbo Regal out for a test drive. It stiffens up even the hardtop Turbo Regals. Braces are powder coated so they will never rust, and are not hard to install. I even did it myself. This kit is well worth the money.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1982-1988 G-Body (Including Buick Turbo Regal)
and 1982-1987 FIREBIRD/CAMARO -
POWDER-COATED GLOSSY BLACK FRONT ROTORS (2) SET
Because of the hub design on the stock front brake rotors it’s difficult to find powder-coated front rotors for your Turbo Regal.
Bare metal rotors quickly turn to rust. You spend the money for nice wheels only to have rust appear on the front brake rotors. Even if the rotors have a zinc coating, it quickly wears off.
Our source custom made a template to protect certain areas from the powder coating, so the coating does not go into the center bearing area or the exposed brake pad area. They also powder coat the entire edge (lip), which is usually the first area to rust. A high-heat glossy black powder coating is used.
The end result is a good looking rotor that stays good looking.
You pay anywhere from $60 to $75 a pair for bare metal rotors. For just a few dollars more you can buy these brand new powder-coated glossy black front rotors.
NOTE - If you are interested in another color, contact us. We may be able to do a custom color set of rotors for you.

REPRODUCTION WINDSHIELD WASHER BOTTLE
Because of the age of these cars, the original windshield washer bottle has probably turned yellow or is dirty.
Now you can make the engine compartment look new by replacing it with a reproduction windshield washer bottle.
First photo shows this bottle, and second photo shows it under the hood.
If you are replacing this bottle, it’s the perfect time to replace the old bottle with a new GM radiator overflow bottle, part #7600.
Our lower photo shows both bottles under the hood.
NOTE - This washer bottle does NOT come with the cap. The Reproduction Windshield Washer Cap, part #7632, can be purchased separately.

REPLACEMENT BOOST LINE VACUUM T
The wastegate solenoid, turbocharger and wastegate actuator are connected by three vacuum hoses and a grey plastic “Y” fitting.
This replacement Y connector is similar in size with the correct orifice in the one outlet which match the original vacuum T. When you install this new Y, you will need to insert the same hose into the metal orifice opening as the original T.
Inside the one side of the connector “Y” fitting there is a metal orifice, which allows only a small amount of vacuum to pass through. If the “Y” or surrounding vacuum hoses are damaged or cracked, you can have an overboost condition.
You should also check the three hoses for possible cracks due to heat or swelling at the ends. This could cause engine damage from leaning out the air/fuel mixture.

Reproduction BELT TENSIONER WITH NEW PULLEY
Original 1986-1987 Turbo Regal belt tensioners can be worn out or broken, which can cause major charging problems.
This new reproduction belt tensioner uses better quality steel spring materials using today’s technology. The original factory tension on the OEM tensioner is rated at 19.5 to 20. The spring tension on these tested at 20.5.
This part has not been available from GM for many years.

Reproduction T-TOPS WEATHERSTRIP SEALS (4) SET
GM discontinued all the factory 1984-1987 Regals T-Tops weatherstripping several years ago. After much research and trial fitting, we now buy from a source that actually was a GM supplier.
We offer the seals as a kit of 4 pieces - 2 main surround seals and 2 anti-rattle strips.
Kit includes the two main body seals that surround the T-Tops openings. These run from the front pillar post around the entire T-Tops opening frame, and down the back side of the door jamb area. These would be the larger seals in the kit.
The other 2 seals are called the “anti-rattle” weatherstrips. These attach to the actual metal frame area, so when you place the T-Tops in position, it helps to make them seat snug and helps to prevent the T-Tops from rattling. You need to adjust the T-Tops so they are snug.
To further restore the car, we also highly recommend you install the Rear Seat Frame Brace Kit, Part #1586 or Part #7169, unless you have already done so. These help retain body stiffness.
Actual T-Tops can also be adjusted as needed, so they latch securely once you have all the new weatherstrip seals properly installed.
This kit is actually less expensive than the GM’s price when it was still available.
These T-Top seals come from a different supplier than the other seals we offer. The fitment is very good.
NOTE - This kit does NOT include the actual seals for the lift-off T-Tops panels. If you need the seals for the actual T-Tops panels, you would need to purchase #7375 kit, which includes all 6 seals.
NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7375 Reproduction T-Tops Weatherstrip Seals (6) Kit, #7211 T-Tops Reproduction Anti-Rattle Weatherstrip Seals (2), #1586 Powder-coated Black Rear Seat Frame Brace Kit®, #7169 Reproduction GNX Rear Seat Brace Kit, and #7171 Reproduction T-Tops Locking-style Plastic Outer Trim Rails (2) and Hardware.
These are excellent replacement parts for any restoration.

GM Licensed - Custom-Made REPRODUCTION WINDOW STICKERS
The most important piece of paper you can have with your car is the original Window Sticker, which gives all the important "history" of your Buick. It is also something that most buyers want when they purchase an original car.
This Window Sticker would show the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price,) all standard equipment, all optional equipment and their prices, destination and delivery charges, federal, state, and local taxes, and prep charges. It may also show the average fuel economy. This allows a consumer to walk into an automobile dealership and find an itemized, accurate price tag on every new vehicle.
If your Window Sticker is missing or damaged, we can have a GM licensed reproduction made specifically for your vehicle by ECS Automotive Concepts.
NOTE - We are only offering 1986 and 1987 Window Stickers at this time.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING -
We are currently waiting on over a dozen boxes of Grand National parts to arrive from a customer who sold his GNX. Watch for these parts to appear soon in the Inner Circle.
Remember, unless you have owned your Turbo Regal for 23 years or longer, email me the last six digits of your VIN number. We may have sold it at some point in the last 23 years and have documented proof that would be of interest to you! Every week we are matching up current owners with paperwork from our files. You may own one of our cars and not even know it! My email is - [email protected]

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPLACEMENT BOOST LINE VACUUM T
