Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 10-21-2020 -
EARLY FALL CONTEST WINNER -
We had a winner almost instantly last Wednesday afternoon. The first correct response came from Dennis McGettigan. The correct answer is a BMW Z4. I should have also required the year and color the car was! The most popular wrong guess was the BMW Z3. Car was a 2013 model. The big clues were the arches behind the seat for the headrest, part of one of the alloy wheels and seeing a straight 6 melted engine under the hood. The next contest will be the M&M contest just prior to Halloween.
My wife Eileen actually owned the very 1st 1998 Z3 BMW in our area. We purchased it from the dealership that was the very first client I towed for way back in 1972-1973. He had just opened up a Toyota dealership. Today he owns several dealerships in our area. I used to tow locally for him for a mere $8. Eileen owned first the 4 cylinder, then got the 6 cylinder and then the M version. Later she would own a Z4. Those cars are a bit small to my liking. You realize what the connection is with the Z3s and the GNX?
ASC made the hardtops for the Z3 BMWs. Matter of fact I was able to get one of their blem hardtops from Rick Hunt years ago for Eileen's Z3 BMW. True story!
START ALL CHARGER SYSTEMS -
The other day I had to have an alternator checked that a customer returned. He claimed upon testing it it only was putting out 112 amps. I had my supplier test it while I was at his shop and it put out over 155 amps with no problem. This happens once in a while. Customers think the alternator is the culprit when in most cases it can be a stretched serpentine belt or a weak belt tensioner. Both play key roles in charging an alternator. These cars are over 30 years old and those critical parts gradually get weak. Fortunately Gbody has made a great reproduction belt tensioner which we carry as do others. We already heard from one Buick vendor that will be offering our 120 and 200 amp alternators later this Fall.
Our alternators have a 2 year warranty and each is tested prior to me picking them up. Once in a while we may get one back that due to UPS has been damaged in some way. We will be offering both versions to other vendors as well.
So while I was at his shop I noticed this gas powered charger with like 30 feet cables on it and 4 old style generators that you would normally see on a car from the 1950s. He explained to me that he is one of just a handful of companies on the east coast that rebuild these construction sight battery chargers. Gas power Briggs and Stratton it weighs over 400 lbs and cost anywhere from $6500 or more today brand new! It is gas power so it can charge heavy equipment not jump start it but charge it over a period of time. Makes sense as your typical jumper cables are maybe 10 feet long. These chargers can either do a 12 volt system or a 24 volt system.
Not something you see every day for sure. My point? If my supplier can rebuild those unique start-all chargers it removes any doubt he is capable of building a simple 12 volt alternator.
PHOTO 1 - We show 4 views of this Start All system. Note the 4 six volt generators. Besides having an electric start it has a pull cable start as well. Not something that is easy to carry around at 400 plus pounds. The gas engine side looks far newer than the side showing the 4 old style 6-volt generators. Notice the 30 foot of cables on the floor!
JUNKYARDING -
At most besides the other week for the Z4 contest I don’t think I have been to any of the junkyards since last Spring. I went to a local junkyard this past Saturday. There are about 4 junkyards I would go to on revolving bases. This particular yard has 20,000 cars according to their sign. Although I did not count them I believe them. At most I can cover a few GM aisles depending on what I find and how heavy my cloth bag gets. I am usually ready to call it a day after 2 hours. Especially at this junkyard which is very hilly. Plus they only take cash. You never want to come up short. The oldest new car arrivals are now late 1980s and it's been several years since I spotted any G body cars in this yard. Fortunately some of the parts I seek I can find on newer cars.
This time the junkyard yielded a few surprise examples of some rare cars. In Photo 2 we show two examples. To me it's the thrill of the hunt and reminds me of an earlier time of my life. A junkyard is like owning a funeral home. Never be a shortage of inventory so business is assured! That would make a good tagline for both enterprises!
PHOTO 2 - We show three views of a Cadillac Allante and one view of a Fiero GT. The Fiero GT was a fairly nice looking car. I got some good parts off the Fiero. Notice the trunk in the Cadillac how detailed the factory trunk kit was. First time I ever spotted an Allante. Buick should have taken a few lessons from Cadillac for the Turbo Regals over the ill fitting black carpet they used. See the Rare Parts section as I got the Fiero parts listed for sale. If you have a friend with one of those cars be sure to tell them.
BUICK MOTORSPORT FENDER COVERS -
Good news and bad news. We placed our initial order for these GM licensed Buick Motorsport fender covers way back in early August. They just came last Friday. This company has run them before so I did not anticipate any issues with their product.
Unfortunately we are not happy with the color combination in the Power Six symbol on the fender cover. The yellow part is more a brown/tan color. We have 24 of them. We have no plans to order any more from this supplier. These are 34” by 22”. These are automotive grade, chemical resistant, and PVC foam material. Made from a non-slip cushion material.
These are on our website. There are no returns. The price is just $29.95 each or 2 for $54.95 plus shipping. We only have 24 available.
PHOTO 3 - We show the Buick Motorsport GM licensed fender cover. Note the colors in the Power Six symbol.

JUNKYARD MEMORY FROM MY EARLY DAYS -
In the early 1970s when I was finishing up my last year in the military I had started my towing business. I would park my truck across the street in a nearby shop parking lot. I got to know the owner of a nearby junkyard. Actually I used to drive his one daughter one year to summer schools a few years earlier. Summer school was at her school not mine.
He would let me drop cars at the gate to his yard late at night. I remember him telling me years earlier he had this one car his wife hated because the doors opened upward and not the normal way. He had to get rid of it. I asked him what kind of car it was. He said it was a Mercedes Benz Gullwing! Today they bring ½ million dollars or more. Today that junkyard is long gone and houses now occupy that area where the junkyard was. My guess is it probably took a while before homeowners were able to grow grass in that soil!
SET OF 3 BROCHURES -
At the junkyard this past weekend I did find 3 interesting brochures in one of the cars. Over the years in some very rare cases I have found Molly clothing brochures. I figure Buick must have handed them out to customers that bought different Buick models in the last 1980s. Over the years I have found a number of original GM window stickers. I always take the window stickers since they are rare to find. Also any factory cassettes or CDs.
PHOTO 4 - I found in this one 1989 Buick model the Goodyear Warranty booklet and the Let's Talk checklist for car owners. The unique brochure was this Reader’s Digest glove compartment Road Atlas. I had never seen this brochure before. In decoding the date it was printed it is from 1985. For you younger Turbo Regal owners this is a booklet of maps of the USA. Before Google and mapquest. What is nice about this handy 50-page booklet is it highlights for each state certain cities and what they are famous for. In the inside cover it has a place for you to write down the VIN number, fuel capacity insurance company oil capacity tire size etc. See Rare Parts section as I have the set of 3 listed for sale.

THE RETURN OF TWO POPULAR PRODUCTS IN LIMITED SUPPLY -
All 7 of the 1986-1987 power steering pumps sold out in one day. The rebuilt quick ratio steering gear assembly we still have and can still get more as we need them. As I have said in the past rebuilders have a tough time getting cores on any vehicle that is over 30 years old let alone something that saw limited production such as the Turbo Regal. It does help that they made a lot of Monte Carlo SS models and to a lesser degree the Oldsmobile 442 models.
1986-1987 TURBO REGAL ALTERNATORS UPDATE -
We recently had a customer return one of our alternators that when he tested it fell well short of the 200 amps advertised. I personally took it to my rebuilder who bench tested it and it tested fine. There are several things that can limit the amps that an alternator can put out on an actual car. The serpentine belt can be stretched. The belt tensioner can be weak. These are two areas of concern due to their age. As I have stated before each alternator is tested by the same source that builds them for us. Plus they have a 2 year warranty. It pays to buy one that is hand built by one individual who has 40 years experience.
COMING SOON TWO NEW PARTS -
One part is currently in the works and will replace the cheap one Buick had in the Turbo Regals. The second part is still in the works. It will incorporate a variety of options.
ANOTHER STORY FROM MY MEMORY -
Back when I was traveling to buy all these 1986-1987 Turbo Regals I made a number of trips up to the New England area. These trips I never really liked due to the heavy traffic and bridge tolls etc. Makes me really appreciate living out in the country. Two particular trips come to mind that both were a bit unusual. One was a Grand National I bought that sat in a small building along a highway. Going by memory I did not meet the owner at the building, but a security guard at this place. The Grand National was the only car in this very small building. The walls were lined with shelves and on the shelves were various toy trains. Quite unusual to say the least. I was instructed by this security person under no conditions could I start the car. Starting the car would create dust. I had to hand push the Grand National out of the building. I think his instructions were not to help me! That was one unusual purchase! Obviously these were simply not “toy” trains!
Another trip again involves a Grand National. The seller worked at a college. He may have been a Professor as he had an inside parking permit in a huge underground parking garage. This guy was very meticulous. When I first laid eyes on the Grand National in the semi dark parking garage I thought for sure the car had chrome tail pipes on it. He had such a high polish on the aluminized tailpipes they look like chrome. I was very impressed. That is something that had to be done starting on day one of ownership to retain a shine like these tailpipes had.
The point of that story? After I purchased that Grand National if I am ever asked did I go to college I can say yes I been to college! All and all each purchase was an adventure. I wish I had documented each purchase better and taken more photos. Generally I was always in a hurry as most trips were 2 or 3 day drives for me. I would always worry if I overlooked anything after I paid for the car and it's loaded on the trailer. One reason I never turned over the check until I had the car loaded. But based on the sheer volume I did in the early and late 1990s the odds played out quite well in my favor. Today, it would require more time to examine any purchase as years have not been kind to these cars at the hands of some owners.

CHICAGOLAND CHAPTER GSCA LICENSE PLATES -
We still have a good assortment of these rare Illinois license plates available. According to long time friend Paul Vilser who did the drawings, layout and production artwork, they were able to do this for 12 years from 1996 to 2007. Legally they were good for about two months but some owners kept them on for a full year. They can still be found on some Illinois cars at the National GS Nationals many years later. It was a clever idea for Illinois to offer this to I assume any Club that wanted to do it. Some of Paul's art work for these Illinois license plates were used on T shirts and also sold at the GS Nationals.
LIST OF MECHANICS FOR THE TURBO REGAL -
We plan to keep running this list of Turbo Regal mechanics for a while. As we get new additions they will appear at the end. Please if you use a good mechanic send us the info to share with our readers. They do not need to be a dedicated Turbo Regal mechanic.

In most cases, we have no idea when we are getting packages shipped back to us.
If you have any cores that are being sent back to us, be sure to use the correct address, especially if you use FedEx. Otherwise, we may not receive your package or it may be sent back to you.

GOOD NEWS - WE ARE ACCEPTING CLASSIFIED ADS -
Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.
Here are the options and the costs.
Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need to be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.
Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.
The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.
It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.
Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,400 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,400 potential buyers.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –
GM LICENSED -
“BUICK MOTORSPORTS” FENDER COVER
The “BUICK MOTORSPORTS” logo is silk screened in white, red and tan on a 34″ x 22″ black fender cover and is GM licensed.
It is made from a non-slip PVC foam cushioned material, so it won’t slide off the fender. Because the surface is non-slip, it holds your tools in place and minimizes potential chips and scratches. It resists most automotive fluids, such as motor oil, brake fluid, coolant, etc.
This recognizable logo is sure to appeal to any Buick owner. We offer it individually as Part #7547 or as a pair Part #7548.
These fender covers are a must-have addition to your garage items, and can also be stored in the trunk in case you need to protect the fenders while away from the garage.
Our photos show the fender cover flat and as it appears folded.
This fender cover also makes a unique gift for any Buick enthusiast or mechanic.

BUTYL TAPE - 5/16” DIAMETER 10-FOOT ROLL -
This butyl tape is black, 5/16" diameter, and comes in a 10-foot roll.
The list of uses for this product is endless. Butyl tape has a strong adhesive and excellent sealing effect. It has very good waterproof performance. It is a "tape type" sealer used by glass shops to seal windshields and rear window glass.
It is not available in most auto stores, which is why we now carry it. Its unique feature of controlled compressibility allows easy installation and yet will not squeeze out when pressed. I have been using it for a variety of projects for many years.
We include it with several of the parts we sell, such as the LED Third Brake Light and the foam filter for the wastegate solenoid. In both cases, it is used to hold the part in place. It’s ideal to fill small holes in the trunk. Buick used it to seal the quarter windows.
If you have a section of wind noise on the weatherstrip seal to the door glass, simply put a section of butyl tape between the molding and the weatherstrip to "puff" out that section of the weatherstrip. The problem is solved. If you have T-Tops and are replacing the metal T section, it’s ideal to use this between the T metal bar and the roof area.
It’s ideal to help seal any moldings in place or lose trim.
Every owner should have a roll of butyl tape in their garage or workshop.

TINTED PARKING LIGHT COVERS (2)
Years ago we sold a similar product. This new design of front parking light covers goes between the actual light assembly and the metal exterior bezel. These are machined drilled and each cover has polished finished edges.
This design makes these covers look like a factory part. Since the covers go between the lens and the outer bezel, you do not see any edges of the covers. The same factory screws are long enough to make them fit properly.
Each side is machined for perfect fit and drilled to fit exactly over the parking light lens. They still let enough light out. They will never come loose and they look stock for the car.
In recent years the "all black look" has become popular. On a Grand National or a WE4 with a black bumper, this gives a nice appearance of everything blending into solid black.
This makes for a cleaner look on the bumper, especially for the Grand National and WE4 models with the black bumpers, since it tones down the bright amber parking light. A subtle change to enhance the front end of the car and the perfect touch for any Grand National or T-Type.
Both tinted parking light covers are the same, are easy to install, and fit any 1982-1987 Regal model.
Since these are made especially for us, we can offer a very reasonable price.

SCANMASTER STEERING COLUMN BRACKET
Here is a simple way to mount the Scanmaster, part #6783, so it is in your direct sight.
The bracket attaches by velcro, which comes with it.
We used to sell a similar steering column bracket years ago until our source stopped making them.
We now have a new supplier who makes it in a high-quality acrylic plastic. It is then painted in the Turbo Regal grey, so it will match most Turbo Regal steering columns.
An excellent way to mount a Scanmaster.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING -
We have several high volume fuel pumps coming from several suppliers to fill our back orders. Also expect to have upper and lower 1986-1987 Turbo Regal radiator hoses shortly to fill our back orders. Just a few items that have proven to be tough to get over the last 4-5 months. Still no update on the factory stock appearing heavy duty intercooler hoses. All we have is #7458 available.
