TURBO REGAL OPTIONAL RADIOS -

Last week we showed the factory Buick brochures for the 1984, 1985, and 1986 radio options and discussed the top-of-the-line radio that Buick offered in our Turbo Regals.

This first photo shows the factory Buick radio brochure for the 1987 Buick models.

PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows the front of the 1987 Buick radio brochure and the photo on the right show one of the inside pages featuring four of the popular radios. In this photo, the third radio down was the only one not available in the Turbo Regals on this page. This 1987 brochure was more colorful than the earlier Buick radio brochures. It also shows the top-of-the-line radio on the cover. All the photos of the high-end radios for the Regal models show the chrome outline on the face of the radio. For whatever reason that version is difficult to find today.

Besides each year having a separate radio brochure for the radio options, there was a page in each year’s Buick Dealer Album that also showed the radio options, description, and models they were available in that year.

For example - In1986 they had a total of 12 different radios available to cover the Buick line up. Of the 12 available, 7 were the rectangle radios that would virtually interchange in any of the cars that accepted that size radio. In 1987 the total was 13 different style radios with 12 of them being the same shape which would interchange in any of the models that accepted that shaped radio.

The one oddball unit was a remote cassette deck, which in 1986 was an option in the Skylark, Somerset, or Riviera.

In 1987 it was only offered in the Riviera.

In all my junkyard “visits,” I have yet to find one of these remote cassette units.

PHOTO 2 - We show both of the Buick Dealer Album pages showing the 1986 Buick radio options (on the left) and the 1987 Buick radio options (on the right.) In both years, as with the earlier years, the plain-jane AM radio was standard. It is the first radio shown on both charts.

The big news in radio transmissions was a few years earlier when a handful of AM stations began to broadcast in stereo. In this next photo dated spring of 1984, we show the flyer Buick did offering the AM Stereo radio for the cars.

PHOTO 3 - Shows this single page flyer from the 1984 Buick Dealer Album. In the second photo, we show the back of this flyer, which lists the radio stations that broadcast in stereo for all the U.S. and some of the Canadian provinces. At the time, only 37 states had some radio AM stations broadcasting in AM stereo. We have come a long way in the audio world since our cars were built!

MORE NEXT WEEK ON RADIOS -

TWO VERY RARE ITEMS TO FIND TODAY BRAND NEW -

We recently purchased a load of parts from one of our customers who sold his Grand National. Among the items were two parts that you seldom ever see today brand new. One of them is a brand new brake accumulator bowl, still in the GM box. Even more rare is a Grand National quarter glass, brand new in the GM box. I personally have never had one of these quarter windows brand new in the GM box. Both items have been sold.

PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows the brand new brake accumulator bowl. The photo on the right shows one side of the brand new Grand National side quarter glass and the box it came in. The seller only had this one side brand new and a good used one for the other side.

FACTORY CASSETTES -

In our 8-19-2015 Inner Circle we talked about various GM cars having an audio cassette as part of the material that came in the glove box of certain GM models.

Since then we heard from one of our New Jersey customers, Nick who worked for a company that stored GM high-end cars from the Linden plant in New Jersey back in the 1980s. They were the Buick Rivieras, Cadillac Eldorados, and Oldsmobile Tornados.

They were stored in a building to keep them out of the weather until they were loaded on car carriers. He remembers only the Oldsmobile had a cassette tape in the glove box. He said back then most of the high-end cars had the optional cassette player.

He said he remembers that not all of the Tornados had them in the glove box. The Linden plant closed in 1986-1987.

NEW BRUNSWICK CANADA TURBO REGALS -

We recently heard from Phil, a Grand National owner who resides in New Brunswick, Canada.

They recently had a car show that attracts around 100 cars. A friend of his decided to contact all the local Grand National owners that lived within an hour’s driving distance of Jemseg, New Brunswick, Canada. They knew of twelve and of the twelve, seven came to the show in Jemseg.

I am sure the summer driving season is a lot shorter in most of Canada than it is in the U.S. Jemseg is a rural community in Queens County, New Brunswick. It is located along the Jemseg River, according to what I found on the internet.

PLANNING AHEAD -

I will be at the East Coast Buick Nationals only on Saturday, September the 19th. I will not be set up as a vendor. However, I plan to take my Tahoe and I can deliver rear Spoolfool fillers as long as you pay for it in advance.

Keep in mind, these are quite long. They will fit on an angle in a Turbo Regal as long as you do not have someone in your passenger’s seat. These would be unboxed and just wrapped. I do not recommend an open truck!

This would save you potentially $45 to $60 in shipping costs.

We can also bring any other items, as long as you pay for them in advance. I will probably be parked in the vendor area. I will also be accepting turbo cores, powermaster cores, mass air flow sensor cores, and steering wheel cores for parts credit. This would save you shipping these items to our office.

LOCAL PONTIAC-BUICK-OLDSMOBILE CAR SHOW -

Local to us is the 16th Annual Pontiac Buick Oldsmobile Car Show. See Upcoming events for details. I have been to this event in the past and hope to attend this year as well. This is one of the few summer car shows catering to the Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile cars.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE - GREAT NEWS - SALE PENDING

At this time, there is a deposit on this 1987 Grand National, one we sold back in 2003. At that time, the Grand National had 24,000 miles on it. I now have the car back at our location and selling it for the current owner. It now has 28,000 miles on it, and it is one of the cars signed by Molly on the trunk ID label. The car is a hardtop. Options include, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, AM/FM cassette, power antenna, power locks, posi rear, analog dash, body side molding, and power trunk release. This is quite unique - it has crank windows!

This car is extremely tight and with no rattles. The doors shut like they did in 1987. The car was garage kept all these years and is dry underneath. The car was never smoked in. The AC blows cold, the power antenna works, and the headliner has been redone.

Car comes with all the glove box booklets, including the Owner’s Manual. A car cover is also included. The car has brand new Bilstein shocks on it.

The car has several old school upgrades, which include a finned aluminum transmission pan, a finned rear end cover, the complete Kodiak West dress-up kit under the hood, a transmission cooler, embroidered head rests, and a complete embroidered trunk kit. The Kodiak West kit is comprised of a polished aluminum turbo shield, special caps for the power steering, oil cap, radiator overflow cap, transmission cover, and oil dip stick cover. This engine dress-up kit was over $350 back in 1989.

The car also has a set of the rare Buick Motorsport valve covers. It also has our Kirban upgraded headlight kit installed and our embroidered floor mats.

The interior is near perfect. The car has no dents and all the bumper fillers are good. The car has been repainted sometime prior to 2003 and does have blemishes, notably around the chip guard portion of both sides.

The stock wheels are like new and the tires are also like new. The car has what appears to be a Hooker dual exhaust system.

This is the first time this car has been for sale since I sold it in 2003.

The new owner will also get the original flyer from when the car was advertised in 2003 by us.

Since this was one of our cars originally, all the missing body bushings have been done and both the front frame braces and connecting brace have been installed. All the weatherstripping is perfect.

This is a true original 28,000-mile 1987 Grand National hardtop. The price is $22,900.

1978-1987 Buick V6 (including Turbo Regal) -
TIMING COVER GASKETS AND SEALS (7) KIT

This is the complete timing chain gasket kit for the original timing chain cover.

The original front seal from GM was a rope seal, which is subject to leakage.

This front seal included in this kit is a one-piece neoprene seal. Turbo applications need this better designed front seal because of the tremendous pressures the turbo engine builds up internally under boost.

This Timing Chain Gasket Kit consists of these 7 parts:
Front Oil Pan Gasket
Oil Pump Cover Gasket
Timing Cover Gasket
Timing Cover Seal
Fuel Pump Mounting Support Gasket
Water Pump Mounting Support Gasket
O-ring

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Late-Model RADIO PLUG-IN HARNESS KIT

By using this custom harness, it allows you to plug your existing 1984-1987 Turbo Regal radio harness and antenna lead into this harness, which plugs into the later radios.

This eliminates cutting any of the factory wires. It allows the 12-pin harness to adapt to the 21-pin harness in the later AC Delco radios.

If you have a power antenna option, it will still work.

The harness and antenna lead can be seen in the photo. The big plug to the left is what the stock 3-part harness plugs into.

This is the same harness we have put with every late-model AC Delco CD player we have sold over the years.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
