STEVEN DOVE BOOKS -
Many of my readers are familiar with the various books related to the Turbo Regals that Steven Dove wrote. By far, he was the very first author to see the importance of these cars and compile several informative books. His first book was copyrighted in 1989 when the cars were just basic used cars. He beat me by 8 years as my first book on the subject did not get printed until 1997. Having written several books on the topic myself, I know first-hand how tough it is to write books!
It’s a shame that Steven Dove’s life was cut short years ago in a car accident as I feel certain he would have written more books. In his first book, many of the big names in the Turbo Regal field are acknowledged, myself included.
What many readers may not realize is that he did a very limited number of the first book entitled, “Guide to Buick Grand National, T-Type & GNX” with a stamped gold vinyl edition. According to the handwritten inscription he autographed in my copy, I have #4 of just 7 signed by Steve Dove.
PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows all 3 possible versions of Steven Dove’s first book. The far left is my copy of the rare first of 7 versions. The middle book is the first edition with the black cover he did in 1989 for the general public. The top right photo shows the personal inscription Steve Dove wrote to me. The bottom left photo shows the latest versions of Steve Dove’s book The Guide to Buick Grand National, T-Type, & GNX I and II when it was printed by American Musclecar Publications. These would be the more common copies you see today for sale. The bottom right photo shows the first edition with the black cover and the latest version of Volume II. This set is for sale in the Rare Parts section of this Inner Circle.
UNUSUAL FIND -
A long-time friend of mine, Wayne Bullock, used to own a salvage yard near our old house. He has since retired and now goes to various storage places with his wife and bids on storage units that have been unclaimed or not paid for.
The other week, unknown to me, he won the storage unit contents that Trey Crease had for many years. Wayne, had the winning bid, but did not realize the connection between Trey and me until he discovered a huge metal sign that had “Zero To Sixty” and my company name “Kirban Performance Products.” Once he discovered this, he called me and said he would give me the sign as a gift along with some of the personal items related to Zero to Sixty that he got with his winning bid.
PHOTO 2 - These photos show the few different Zero to Sixty catalogs, magnetic sign, several of his license plates, and the large 5 foot by 2-½ foot metal sign. That large metal sign hung on a building Trey and I shared in Ivyland, Pennsylvania in the 1990s. These items will now be part of my collection.
MY SECOND TRIP TO COLLEGE -
This past weekend, my wife and I went to visit our granddaughter, Devyn at Penn State, also known as “Happy Valley.” This was a unique experience for us. The complex is huge! Over 40,000 students from all over the world attend the main campus in Happy Valley. The Penn State football team is undefeated this year.
Unknown to us, it was the same weekend that the Traveling Wall, an 80-percent replica Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall was being displayed at Penn State’s Innovation Park in recognition of the war’s 50th anniversary. Once I discovered this, it was the first thing we went to see on campus. I had been to the original Vietnam wall in Washington DC years ago. Even though this one is slightly smaller, it is still a moving experience, especially for anyone that has served in Vietnam.
The scope of seeing over 58,000 names of men and woman that gave their lives is a moving experience. They have the deaths listed in order by each week for each month and year. Laid out this way, you can clearly see how long this war really lasted.
PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows Devyn and me in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall that was set up on the grounds at Penn State last Saturday. The photo on the top right shows Devyn standing on the running board of one of the military trucks that was also on display. I explained to her that this truck was very similar to the Army trucks I drove during basic training in Georgia. They all looked the same and you did not need a key to operate them.
The photo on the lower left shows a group of veterans posing for a photo. In that photo you can see the portion of the wall at its highest point to the right, which was when the death rate was at its highest from 1965-1967. It is well over 6 feet high.
The photo on the lower right shows us in the traditional photo taken at the Nittany Lion statue on the University Park campus.
RARE 1987 GRAND NATIONAL POSTER -
Perhaps one of the rarest Grand National posters that were produced over 30 years ago can be seen in the photo 1. It is a paper poster measuring 24 inches by 28 inches. Because it is paper, I doubt many of these posters have survived in good condition.
PHOTO 4 - The photo to the left shows this very rare paper poster from 1987. It was a smart move depicting the popular Grand National. Students had a chance to win a $10,000 scholarship by testing their driving skills. This was done in conjunction with the Skip Barber Racing School and the Buick All Star Dealers. The picture of the Grand National is the same one that appears in the 1987 Buick Dealer Album. (I used glasses to hold the corners down to take the photo.) Unfortunately, I do not have any other info on this program that Buick offered. It would be interesting to hear from someone that won a $10,000 scholarship!
The photo to the right shows a stock turbo shield and inlet pipe that I had powder coated that closely matches the coating that Buick did on the GNX turbo shield and inlet pipe.
These parts are for sale in the Rare Parts section along with the poster featured.

UPDATE ON THE VERY LAST GRAND NATIONAL -
As the last Grand National was being built, Bob Colvin was afforded the unique opportunity to film the assembly of this special car. GM film crew also filmed it. This combination film has been converted to a 2-hour DVD, available direct from Bob Colvin. The price is just $20. You can email him at [email protected] or call him at 318-455-6073 to order.
He sent me a copy and it is well worth the money. It is really interesting how the body is put on the frame. It was also interesting to see how they used a pattern that was hung off the fender in order to position the fender emblems correctly. This way the emblem was positioned the same on both sides of the car. It was neat seeing the car frame come down the assembly line with the powermaster brake system bolted up to the brake lines with no body on the frame. It looked like the powermaster unit just hanging out in midair.
I serious doubt GM would let any car owner film the production of any GM vehicle in any of their plants today! I know years ago when Pete Serio and I got a personal tour of the 3800 engine plant in Flint, we were not permitted to take any photos.
JEREMIAH COTTLE - RETIRED AIR FORCE VETERAN -
Jeremiah Cottle, a retired Air Force Veteran, is a name most of us never heard of until the recent mass shooting at the country music concert in Las Vegas. Seven years ago, Jeremiah Cottle invented the bump stock that the killer used on several of his weapons. Understandably, Mr. Cottle is extremely saddened by the events that night and has ceased selling his invention.
Eileen’s sister lives in Las Vegas along with one of her sons. He and his girlfriend actually had planned to go the concert, but due to back problems and not being a big country music fan, they decided not to go. They had close friends at the concert that survived by running through the gunfire, and one young friend was shot in her leg.
HIGH SCHOOL REUNION -
I read this in a newspaper the other day. The Class of 1943 is holding a luncheon later this month and all graduates are welcome. After reading this article, I started to do the math in my head. I figured at graduation most students would be 17-18 years old. Go back to 1943, which is 74 years, and add that to the average age of 17. That means their average age today would be 91. I have no idea how big the graduating class was at that school, but at the average age of 91 years old, I can’t imagine there would be many attendees.

FALL CARLISLE UPDATE -
This report comes from Jim Wilson, a long-time customer of ours. He attended the Fall Carlisle event Friday. He reported seeing a total of 3 Grand Nationals for sale. One had the astroroof option with about 89,000 miles on it. It was listed for $19,900. Another Grand National was listed as a one owner with a lot of paperwork with it. It had a price tag of $27,000. The third Grand National was listed for $24,000. All 3 Grand Nationals were 1987 models.
THE RETURN OF ANOTHER PRODUCT FROM US -
We now have in stock the reproduction black plastic 1984-1987 Regal (all models) power antenna mast bezel. This is the angle part that sits on the top of the fender for the power antenna. They can easily crack due to age or replacing the power antennas.
Here is the link to this power antenna bezel on our website:
MORE GOOD NEWS -
As I write this, we have a few original AC Delco power antennas currently getting rebuilt with the upgraded steel cable insert. You must contact our office 215-766-1611 x 0 and get on the short list if you want one. This is for part #7703 for $179.95.
It is very difficult for me to find suitable original power antennas to have rebuilt.
Here is a link to the power antenna options on our website.
1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -
I am representing this 1987 Grand National hardtop for sale for the owner who resides in Florida. This car is at the top of the value chain and is, without any doubt, one of the best. It has been in the same family since it was new. The original owner bought it when he was single. Soon after, with a growing family, it became evident the Grand National was not a practical car, so he sold it to his brother who I have known for probably 20 years. His brother recently passed away and that is why the car is back down in Florida.
It has been made better than new. When I say better than new, it is mainly due to the fact it has had a very high-dollar repaint applied and everything has been freshened up.
I knew the brother that passed away quite well, since he was heavily involved with GTOs and even wrote a very detailed book on GTOs that is still sold today. He also had a GTO and was a very meticulous individual. His name was Eric White. The book he wrote years ago was titled, “GTOAA of America Pontiac GTO, GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide.”
I will give a copy of Eric’s GTO identification book to whoever buys this pristine Grand National. Eric was very well known in the GTO world at the national level. I would see him every year at the National events during the 1990s. As a matter of fact, we discussed his new book and what he needed it to say since he was using GM logos, etc.
The Grand National is now in his brother’s hand, Kirk White, in Florida. They have every single document with this car since it was new. Plus, they even have the original Window Sticker. They also have every single repair receipt. Over $12,000 was spent on the repaint and to freshening up this car.
It still smells new! A smell that no company as of yet has ever duplicated. If they did, Corvette owners would line up to buy it!
The Grand National has almost every single option. The actual mileage is less than 23,000 original miles. The car is 99% stock with the one exception being an aftermarket alarm system.
It has the stock powermaster brake system with the upgraded Cardone brake bowl. The car has used seat covers, which have protected the original seats. According to Kirk, he doesn’t believe anyone has ever sat in the back seat of this car.
This is a Kirban-quality car based in my numerous emails with Kirk and the fact I knew his brother from our mutual GTO connection for many years.
The new lowered price is $29,900. Keep in mind, receipts come with the car and the repaint totaled over $12,000. The repaint was only done because the car had such a poor paint job from the factory as many of them did.

TIP FROM KIRBAN -
When replacing the spark plug wires, always use wires that are specifically for your application. By doing so, you avoid possible damage from any of the spark plug wires coming in contact with the exhaust headers.
One mistake some owners make is to route some of the spark plug wires over the plenum. The sharp edges of the plenum can cause a misfire over a period of time due to the vibration of the engine.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.
Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,200 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.
My Rare Parts section is only viewed by those that subscribe. Subscription is free, so complaints on what I write are nonexistent!
Ads submitted properly by the previous Sunday would appear that next Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. Ads must be submitted by email to [email protected]
Payment by credit card must be done by phone to our office 215-766-1611 x 0.

Reproduction BLACK PLASTIC POWER ANTENNA BEZEL
This bezel will fit 1984-1987 Grand Nationals or Turbo Regals with the factory black bezel for the power antenna.
This is a reproduction of the black plastic bezel that sits at the base of the power antenna mast on the outside of the fender. Over a period of time this bezel can crack or fade.
If you have to replace the power antenna, we recommend you replace the black bezel at the same time. This part is unique to this application only.
This new reproduction bezel is made in ABS plastic with increased UV protection over the originals for a longer life. This ensures the part from dulling and cracking like the originals over a longer period of time.
