ANOTHER NEW PRODUCT FROM US -

One product we use quite frequently is butyl tape. The word butyl has a very strange spelling! The product has many uses which you quickly discover once you purchase a roll of it. Most auto stores do not carry it. Not many vendors sell it either. Glass shops use it when replacing windshields. It is sold in several size diameters and lengths. It has a strong adhesive and excellent sealing effect. It has good waterproof performance.

If you have ever removed the quarter glass on a Turbo Regal it is that material that Buick used to seal the quarter glass to the body. Its unique feature is that it is easy to control compressibility which allows easy installation, yet will not squeeze out.

Perfect to put under the factory T-Tops metal moldings and any trim moldings to secure a nice bond to the metal. I use it frequently on loose trim on used cars. If you have wind noise after installing any weatherstripping it's perfect to put behind the weatherstripping and the body to “puff” the weatherstrip tighter to the door glass. Because it's black it blends in.

Once you buy it you will find a multitude of uses and wonder how you never bought it before now. We package it with the small foam filter for the wastegate solenoid. We package a small piece of it with the LED third brake light so it stays in place in the 3rd brake light housing. This is just 2 of the uses we use it for.

We now carry this in a 10 foot roll. It is 5/16” in diameter. Perfect size for any use you may have.
Use it to plug any extra holes that maybe a previous owner did for something they had mounted in the trunk. We have it already in stock. It may not yet be on our website. Part #7919. The price is $13.95 for a 10-foot round roll 5/16ths in diameter. Simply call our office to order. Office number is 215-766-1611.

PHOTO 1 - The photo shows the actual open box with the roll of butyl tape shown. The butyl tape is round. The butyl material stays very pliable. Every Turbo owner should have a roll in their garage or in their shop.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL STOCK DOWNPIPE CONTROL ARM HEAT SHIELD -

Just like the drivers side relay cover we featured last week this is another part that Buick never made but serves a very useful purpose. I can’t take credit for the idea or the finished product. It was the idea of an original GNX owner out of Colorado maybe 25 or more years ago, I would buy them from him for over 20 years until he no longer could get them made and retired. He turned the project over to me. I apologize as I can’t remember his name.

The shield is made by cutting an exhaust pipe expanding part of it and welding a plate on the one end. The shield then attaches to the threaded stud on the back of the control arm. A very clever product. He also would supply us with the pre-cut 1986-1987 mass air duct hoses. We still sell the same mass air duct hose today. We have been fortunate all these years as some of the products and ideas for the products comes from actual Turbo Regal owners. The mass air hoses we sell today are superior to the original mass air hose.

PHOTO 2 - The photo on the left shows the actual control arm heat shield. The photo on the right shows it installed on a Grand National. To install it you need to have the car on a lift as it gets installed from under the suspension to work it up and around the control arm bolt. If you have a larger aftermarket downpipe I am not sure if there is enough clearance to install this shield. It reminds me of the stainless heat shield we made years ago for the GTO that ran the HO exhaust manifolds and the starter solenoid was extremely close to the HO manifold on the one side.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL SPARK PLUG WIRES -

When it comes to correct looking 1986-1987 Turbo Regal spark plug wires. Your choices are very limited since the original spark plug wires were grey, not black like many GM cars where. Proper lengths are also very critical to avoid having them get burnt on the exhaust manifolds or cut on the edge of the upper plenum. One source has gone to the expense of getting 6 different print wheels made to imprint the number on each wire to match the originals. That company sells the sets for $100 or more.

To my knowledge we are the only source that also got them made in the proper lengths in grey with the correct straight spark plug boots. We also wholesale them to all the other vendors. We first got these made way back in 1991 almost 30 years ago! Back then the owner of the company that I dealt with actually lived near me. I even sold him one of my BMWs. He later would locate down south and picked up several Nascar accounts for his plug wire business.

So we have a very long relationship with this company. They are U.S. made also. We can also get quotes on small runs if you know of a car model that has a limited market. We are now checking to see if any vendor wants to get the Turbo Trans Am wires made as I got all the specs for them and the proper spark plug boots. Again the Turbo Trans Am would not have the wording.

To do one print wheel for each of the 6 wires would run probably over $100 a print wheel. I know this as I had print wheels done many years ago for all the GTO years 1964 thru 1970. So upfront we spent almost 3 grand on print wheels before we had any dated spark plug wires produced. The GM cars had 4 different ones each year representing the 4 quarters of the year. One company that did the Corvette wires for those years did odd quarters for each year so to avoid confusion I did the even quarters. The Corvette wires were quite costly. My target audience being the Pontiac GTO we came in at a cheaper price than the Corvette ones. We did get Packards blessing in advance since they said Packard on the plug wires during those years. It was a different time back then I don’t recall Packard wanting any money up front or fees!

Our 1986-1987 reproduction spark plug wires continue to be the best bang for the buck and you can be assured they match in length the originals. The color grey is not an exact match to the originals, but then again colors fade after many years of sun exposure. If you need further proof undo either door sill plate and see how bright the color of the carpet is under the door sill plate compared to the carpet exposed to the sun! Our part number is #1531 for the 1986-1987 spark plug wires. They are in stock and have always been a good seller.

PHOTO 3 - The photo on the left shows close up one of our reproduction spark plug wires alongside the 3 passenger side original spark plug wires on the 7,700 mile Grand National. The photo on the right shows a close up of the spark plug end on the passenger side. You can probably see the spark plug ends and how the original spark plug boot matches up to the spark plug boot on our plug wire set. Notice the factory water valve in the same photo.

FEW MORE USED PARTS THAT ARE LISTED UNDER THE RARE PARTS SECTION -

PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows a restored glossy black powder coated powermaster flange to the firewall and new gasket. Also both brackets to secure the powermaster motor to the master cylinder. Both done in glossy black powder coating. The top right photo shows another bracket to the firewall glossy blackpowder coated, new gasket, good used reservoir cap and gasket, and both used powermaster hoses. The bottom left photo and bottom right photo shows a very nice complete original set of the very rare Turbo Trans Am numbered plug wires.

COMING NEXT WEEK -

We will have a very unusual contest. One that we have never done before to test the knowledge of our readers. Then later this month for Halloween we will have one of our annual M&M contests.

ANOTHER STORY FROM MY MEMORY -

This story begins in the early 1970s. Back then I would be on the road 10 or more days every month even during the winter. My Dad had speaking engagements every night and myself and another friend of my Dads would sell my Dads books after his sermon. This was a great experience for me as I had never travelled as much as I did back then. One trip was 6 weeks long as we hit the entire west coast covering almost 10,000 miles.

I got smart real quick as I realized cars down south did not suffer the rust issues they did in my area of the country the northeast also known as the rust belt. As long as I was at the Church on time every night the roads I took to get there did not matter. Early on I bought an open car trailer and would try and buy a muscle car and bring it back. Problem was I had to do it at the end of the trip when I had enough cash with me plus I didn’t want to be stuck hauling a car every night on the speaking trip.

I bought a number of antique items as well focusing on old signs mostly car related. Back then original metal car signs and soda signs were thrown away items. Unlike today where they are very collectible. I would buy Coca-cola signs and I even bought a very rare Mountain Dew display which I still have today.

I did these monthly road trips probably for about 8 years. Fast forward to the late 1990s my parents had moved to western Washington state. The year was the Fall of 2003. My Dad was planning with my sister Doreen and her husband Wes one final speaking trip going across the entire country from Washington State to ending up at our house in Furlong, Pennsylvania. My sister and her husband would accompany him to Wisconsin and fly home. Their oldest daughter Jessica would meet my Dad in Illinois and travel with him the rest of the journey.

I knew about this long road trip in advance and thought it would be neat if I could surprise my Dad somewhere in the midwest and at the same time buy a Turbo Regal to make the trip worthwhile.

During my search I found a WE4 for sale just west of Chicago. I struck a deal and arranged to pick up the car on a Saturday night. My Dad was speaking about 50 miles west of where I was picking up the car.

The next day was Sunday and my Dad was speaking at the morning Church service. I pulled into the Church lot with my truck and WE4 on my trailer. I snuck into the back of the Church as he was speaking. I even wore a suit! A flood of memories came back to me as I recalled the many times I heard his sermon during the 1970s. I could almost give the speech myself!

As I snuck into the back of the Church my Dad saw me and for a minute lost his train of thought before regaining his train of thought. At the end of the sermon I worked his book table like I did so many times before over 20 years earlier.

My Dad rode in my truck with me to his next meeting in Indiana. We talked about the good old days when we would be on the road ten days or so every month. Jessica, my sister's daughter drove his car to the next meeting. This was my Dads last speaking tour. I was just happy I was able to surprise him almost halfway across the country.

OBITUARIES -

I try and pick up our local daily newspaper every day. I usually read the male obituaries to see if I know the individual or where he worked in the area. It goes without saying most men are always survived by wife even if the man is lucky enough to reach 90 plus years old. I read one last week that had a touch of humor. Humor in an obituary is extremely rare to read. The individual was only 35. Cause of death was not noted. Below is part of his obituary.

“The financial impact will be immense to a local 7-Eleven store. He leaves behind an enormous amount of junk and several inventions of his own design that we are unsure how to operate! He will live on in our hearts, minds, thoughts, and laughs forever.”

One can imagine what your spouse may say with your passing. It could read in part he shared a mutual love affair with his 35 year old Turbo Regal and his loving wife who tolerated the many hours he spent figuring out how to stop the oil leaks!

Over the years I have bought several Turbo Regals from someone that has died. You have to get an original death certificate. Sometimes it's difficult to get some of the extra parts. Even something like a wheel lock can be difficult to locate since the wife may not have any idea where he kept it or any of the original documents.

My Uncle passed away a few weeks back. He lived a remarkable life and died one month shy of what would have been his 100th birthday. At the small service that was held at the cemetery where his parents (my Dad's parents as well) I made sure one thin dime was put in the container. My Dad always told us that him and his brother would each get a dime from their mother at Christmas time. This was during the depression. Both my Dad and his brother Lafayette went to Girard College as children. Both then served in World War II in the Navy.

CHICAGOLAND CHAPTER GSCA LICENSE PLATES -

We still have a good assortment of these rare Illinois license plates available. According to long time friend Paul Vilser who did the drawings, layout and production artwork, they were able to do this for 12 years from 1996 to 2007. Legally they were good for about two months but some owners kept them on for a full year. They can still be found on some Illinois cars at the National GS Nationals many years later. It was a clever idea for Illinois to offer this to I assume any Club that wanted to do it. Some of Paul's art work for these Illinois license plates were used on T shirts and also sold at the GS Nationals.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL AC DELCO WATER VALVE UPDATE -

They are all gone from our inventory.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL POWER STEERING PUMP UPDATE -

Cardone is able to rebuild 7 of them which they are sending to me. As of this writing I do not have a price structure yet. I anticipate the price to be between $100 and $125 and of course no core required. If you want contact Christina if you want to be assured of getting one. Only 7 available. They have zero cores on hand after I get these 7 from them.

URGENT REQUEST -

We need good used 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores! To see if your core is acceptable email me [email protected] a photo prior to sending it for $100 credit. Help us help others restore their cars. We have an urgent need for good steering wheel cores.

WORKING ON A FEW IDEAS UPDATE -

We are looking at another new project that Buick never really provided with their cars.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If there are any tips or ideas you want to share with our readers, email me – [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

Here is a very helpful tip one that I do with all four of our personal cars. Everyone knows it's the driver's floor mat that will show wear the fastest from your heel or how you rest your foot. Take any rear floor mat most are rectangle in shape and simply place it over the main area of the driver's custom mat. That way the drivers floor mat retains its new car look. Also easy to pull out the smaller mat to knock the dirt off it.

In most cases, we have no idea when we are getting packages shipped back to us.

If you have any cores that are being sent back to us, be sure to use the correct address, especially if you use FedEx. Otherwise, we may not receive your package or it may be sent back to you.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

BUTYL TAPE - 5/16” DIAMETER 10-FOOT ROLL -

This butyl tape is black, 5/16" diameter, and comes in a 10-foot roll.

The list of uses for this product is endless. Butyl tape has a strong adhesive and excellent sealing effect. It has very good waterproof performance. It is a "tape type" sealer used by glass shops to seal windshields and rear window glass.

It is not available in most auto stores, which is why we now carry it. Its unique feature of controlled compressibility allows easy installation and yet will not squeeze out when pressed. I have been using it for a variety of projects for many years.

We include it with several of the parts we sell, such as the LED Third Brake Light and the foam filter for the wastegate solenoid. In both cases, it is used to hold the part in place. It’s ideal to fill small holes in the trunk. Buick used it to seal the quarter windows.

If you have a section of wind noise on the weatherstrip seal to the door glass, simply put a section of butyl tape between the molding and the weatherstrip to "puff" out that section of the weatherstrip. The problem is solved. If you have T-Tops and are replacing the metal T section, it’s ideal to use this between the T metal bar and the roof area.

It’s ideal to help seal any moldings in place or lose trim.

Every owner should have a roll of butyl tape in their garage or workshop.

1982-1987 Buick Regal (Including Turbo Regals) -
TINTED PARKING LIGHT COVERS (2)

Years ago we sold a similar product. This new design of front parking light covers goes between the actual light assembly and the metal exterior bezel. These are machined drilled and each cover has polished finished edges.

This design makes these covers look like a factory part. Since the covers go between the lens and the outer bezel, you do not see any edges of the covers. The same factory screws are long enough to make them fit properly.

Each side is machined for perfect fit and drilled to fit exactly over the parking light lens. They still let enough light out. They will never come loose and they look stock for the car.

In recent years the "all black look" has become popular. On a Grand National or a WE4 with a black bumper, this gives a nice appearance of everything blending into solid black.

This makes for a cleaner look on the bumper, especially for the Grand National and WE4 models with the black bumpers, since it tones down the bright amber parking light. A subtle change to enhance the front end of the car and the perfect touch for any Grand National or T-Type.

Both tinted parking light covers are the same, are easy to install, and fit any 1982-1987 Regal model.

Since these are made especially for us, we can offer a very reasonable price.

SCANMASTER STEERING COLUMN BRACKET

Here is a simple way to mount the Scanmaster, part #6783, so it is in your direct sight.

The bracket attaches by velcro, which comes with it.

We used to sell a similar steering column bracket years ago until our source stopped making them.

We now have a new supplier who makes it in a high-quality acrylic plastic. It is then painted in the Turbo Regal grey, so it will match most Turbo Regal steering columns.

An excellent way to mount a Scanmaster.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPRODUCTION VACUUM BRAKE PEDAL

We now offer this reproduction vacuum brake pedal. The difference between the vacuum brake pedal and a Turbo Regal pedal is the location of the pin that the rod goes to that comes through the firewall. The vacuum brake pedal makes the installation easier. Without the vacuum brake pedal, you would need to weld a new pin in a different location on the original Turbo Regal brake pedal.

Finding a good used vacuum brake pedal has become more difficult as time passes. Because many Turbo Regal owners are converting to vacuum brakes, the demand has been heavy.

This reproduction pedal has solved that issue of using a 30-plus-year-old rusted vacuum brake pedal.

NOTE - You need to re-use the original bolt and bushings to secure the pedal to the bracket under the dash. The pedal is bare metal and will require painting.

STAINLESS STEEL TRANSMISSION COOLING LINE KIT - 4 Pieces

Over time, the original lines can rust or leak.

These lines are stainless steel and made by the same company where we buy our brake and fuel line kits. The quality is excellent.

If you ever had the transmission rebuilt, you know what it’s like to rebend old transmission lines to make them fit.

Kit consists of the 4 lines as pictured.

These are manufactured in the USA using the best materials.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

Pypes expects to have exhaust systems available around the 3rd week of October.
