CASTLE PERFORMANCE 2ND ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE -
Unfortunately, the weather for the Castle Open House proved to be an issue. Rain was in the forecast for Saturday. Just the threat of rain is a major killer for attendance for groups that plan a car show event. I know as we have a lot of experience with car shows. We usually did ours in the early Spring, starting back in 1988 and every year up until a few years ago. Also, since I did make final plans to attend and be a speaker until very late, many people who wanted to come had already made other plans.
So, we only had a handful of Turbo owners at Castle Performance Open House on Route 66 at his facility in Brookfield, Illinois.
Amazingly two of the attendees had purchased a Grand National from me. One bought his GN from me back in 2002. He even saved the original full-color ad of the car to give me. That car he purchased was an original 1987 Grand National hardtop with just 2,360 actual miles. In 2002 he paid me $17,900! A worthy investment! I almost always got my asking price back then as the cars I offered generally sold in the first ten days. In some cases, I had buyers waiting before I even got the cars! I think he said the car now has like 36,000 miles on it. He saved the original tires, etc. More importantly he was smart enough to keep the car all these years! With 2,360 actual miles, this was one of the lowest mileage cars I have sold.
I had brought the chart showing each sale with me and sure enough, his car is listed in the year 2002 and shows it went to Illinois! He has kept all the documents as well. I think he said I got the car out of Tennessee. It was great to meet him and also the other Grand National owner Bob Rogacki who lives very close to Brookfield, Illinois.
One Turbo Regal owner, Melanie Mauser, who is very active in the Buick National club showed up with her very unusual black 1987 Turbo-T. Sometimes you get lucky in life and without realizing it you purchase a car because you like it and only later someone points out to you just how rare the car you purchased really is. Melanie is one such owner. She purchased a black 1987 Turbo-T. What makes it unusual and (verified in my book) is that it has the black-out package with chrome bumpers, which Buick stopped producing in the fall of 1987 when they announced the new WE4 model to avoid confusion. The WE4, as you know, was all black and had black bumpers. It gets better. It appears the assembly workers who built this specific car were also confused as the name plate above the glove box says REGAL LIMITED! I forgot to ask her if it lights up by any chance? Car is not a limited model.
PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows Mike from Tinley Park, Illinois who bought his 1987 Grand National from me in 2002 when it had just 2,360 original miles! The top right photo shows a copy of the actual printed flyer I printed to promote the car. He saved it all these years. I remember every time I listed a low-mileage example I would put the words (Not a misprint). The bottom left photo shows Melanie's extremely nice and rare 1987 black Turbo-T with the black-out package. The bottom right photo shows me giving my seminar using her car. With the facts in my book backing it up, it is proof her car is extremely rare. It is just unfortunate Buick did not record how many were built in that short space of time prior to the release of the WE4. On the plus side, if you are a buyer you may stumble on a similar car where the buyer is unaware of how rare this model is. The focus for most owners usually would be for the WE4 and not this one!
CASTLE PERFORMANCE SHOP -
Paul and his son Paulie really have a nice set up in an old Ford dealership he purchased on historic Route 66, which I traveled back in the fall of 1963. Paul has a very extensive collection of very desirable signs and displays. I thought I had a lot of original signs and displays. Of course he bought some of them from me over the years.
PHOTO 2 - The top left shows an original 6 foot high Speedy sign, which was actually McDonalds before it became McDonalds. This is probably from the early 1960s! The top right photo shows an original Shoney's Big Boy display in the front window of his showroom. The bottom left is from a T-shirt we did years ago on Kenny Dutweiler. This is framed and autographed by Kenny. The bottom right shows an original huge Carlisle banner showing a GNX from a few years ago. This is just a small portion of the many signs Paul and his son have scattered throughout the building.
I was very fortunate that my granddaughter Devyn was able to come with me on this road trip. She was able to work virtually for her job. We rented a Nissan from Avis and planned the 12-13-hour trip taking Route 80 across Pennsylvania. Devyn had never travelled west from our house driving a car. Paul and his son and one worker had been out a week earlier to tow dolly 2 Turbo Regals back to his shop, and Paul was going to drive a Caddy ETC home. That was the original plan. However Paul had some eye issues and ended up leaving the Caddy at a rest stop along Route 80 in Pennsylvania. He did leave his Illinois dealer plate on the car and keys under the mat. The game plan was we would pick up the Caddy and drive it to the next exit and park it so it could be picked up later. I had Eileen make a note saying we would get it moved before the 15th of October and put my phone number on the note. We left it at a truck stop. Paul had bought one of my full-size Maxine mannequins, which we sat in the passenger seat.
PHOTO 3 - The top left shows Maxine in the passenger seat in the Caddy. We left her sitting there. The top right photo shows Maxine. We were going to strap her to the roof of the rental car like the movie National Vacation! The bottom left shows Devyn behind the wheel of Paulie's WS6 Firebird. The bottom right shows Devyn behind the wheel of a late-model Mercedes Benz SL500. Devyn said she would not mind driving that car home!
PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows Paul's Aunt Rosemary, Paul's Mom Donna and Paul's daughter Giulianna. I called her “Jello” as it's easier to pronounce! The top right photo shows a glimpse of their shop. The bottom left photo shows a resto mod 1967 GTO that showed up with the LS model under the hood. He also has a Grand National! This is similar to what Darrell is building for Blanco. The bottom right shows Devyn sitting in this resto 1967 GTO.
ONE THE WEIRDEST COINCIDENCES ON THE TRIP -
This story is close to unbelievable. Pennsylvania is over 300 miles when you travel from the far eastern part of the state to the western border on Route 80. We left our area around 3 pm. Devyn likes to drive in the daylight and I would drive at night while she used her smart phone to nail down a hotel for the night. So, it's about 10 pm and we had traveled about 300 miles from home. I am talking on my flip phone. A state trooper comes right up on our rear bumper with his lights on. On this area of Route 80, I can’t pull over safely immediately. Meanwhile, Devyn is close to having a panic attack since she’s never been pulled over. I’m trying to figure out what I did wrong.
Finally we pull over. The State trooper comes up to the passenger door where Devyn is sitting. Because the car is a rental, in the dark I can’t figure out how to get the window to go down plus Devyn can’t get her window to go down because the child lock was on! She finally asks the trooper if she could open the door? The State Trooper meanwhile is shining a light into the car.
Devyn opens the door and the State Trooper pokes his head in and shines the flash light on me and says “Are you the Grand National Guy?” At first I did not believe what I just heard. How would he know that it's me in a rental car with Jersey plates? Then he asks to see my license and immediately says, I went to your shop maybe 4 years ago in Plumsteadville, PA. At this point Devyn is speechless! I am thinking what are the chances at almost 10 at night 300 miles from home and it’s a State Trooper that actually knows me that pulls me over. He said I was swerving a bit. Since that road has lots of accidents, they pull people over to check they are not impared. He says, “Since I stopped you, I have to write you up but no way can I give you a ticket!” We had a good laugh over this and Devyn was relieved. We talked for about 30 minutes.
KIRBAN PERFORMANCE UPDATE -
What we have recently done is moved most of our shipping to a distribution center in the midwest. I am still running the company Kirban Performance, Christina is still taking orders and answering the phone. Carrie is still working for us as well. Most of the bigger items we will still ship from the east coast, since suppliers are local to us. We will be adding more items as time permits, mostly focusing on the stock or nearly stock items. But at my age I am wanting to slow down a bit. Nothing goes on forever and I have been at this gig since 1978 starting with GTOs. Matter of fact, I am up for the Pontiac Hall of Fame. You need so many votes to get in and you remain eligible for 5 years. I think I have 2 chances left! Just being a nominee for the Pontiac Hall of Fame is a huge honor to be considered. My health is still quite good and as my Dad would often say, “Your Health is Your Wealth.” My email remains the same.
THE STINT I PULLED DURING MY SENIOR YEAR AT HIGH SCHOOL -
Backtracking, the 1963 Ford XL fastback that I used to run away from home two years earlier got traded in for one of my Dad's company cars. When my Dad sold that company to a company in Florida I got to drive the car to Florida over Christmas break as a senior and even attended the Orange Bowl game. Once again I missed several days of school! I then also had a 1950s Ford sedan and a real nice 1956 Crown Vic Ford. I paid $500 for the Crown Vic. The Crown Vic was that limited production model with the wide chrome bar across the roof. My car had a black and white exterior finish.
Unknown to me at the time, these overhead Ford V8 engines due to oil sludge issues would clog the drain areas if oil was not changed regularly. This would starve the lifters for oil. This Ford was suffering from that fate. Having limited funds presented a challenge to me. I first started to raise money for a rebuilt 292 V8 engine. The next problem was where could I get the engine pulled and the rebuilt one installed? Our house lacked any big trees of enough size to handle a chain hoist. A solution came to me one day while in school gazing out one of the school windows. I noticed a row of big trees along the one entrance to the school parking lot. Seemed like the ideal solution. It never occurred to me to check with the school officials. I was figuring at most it would take maybe 4 or 5 days to do the removal and install.
So, one fine day after school I drove my Ford up on the lawn and under one of the trees lining the school parking lot. I can’t remember where I got the chain hoist. So, each day after school I simply walked over to my car and began the project of removing the original engine. My buddy brought me the rebuilt engine. With no help except for my girlfriend (now my wife) she kept me company and would bring me dinner each night. She only lived about a block away from the high school. At this point I was amazed as no teacher or school official ever said anything. After I got the engine in, I faced a difficult task. While laying on the ground under the car, how do I lift the heavy 3-speed manual transmission into the bell housing and into the pilot bearing? I can’t even remember how many times I tried but I could not get it lined up. Even after several days I still had no luck. Frustration was starting to set in.
I admitted defeat and paid someone to tow the car back to my house. Naturally the neighbor across the street did not like my car sitting in the street, but I had no choice. My Dad, seeing the issue I was having, surprised me while I was at school and had it towed to a transmission shop to put the transmission in and get the Crown Vic running for me. I think he also did it because on weekends when he had 2 weddings to photograph my 1956 Ford looked a lot better than my 1950 Ford did when I would cover the second wedding for him!
Within a month of graduating High School I sold the Crown Vic for $500 as I had my sights on a Corvette - any Corvette - like most 17-year-old kids would want! Yes, I did find a 1961 Corvette for $1700 within 30 days of graduating. I worked the late shift at a plastics place and loved driving the Corvette after work. I would blow my horn as I drove by my girlfriend's house mostly to annoy her mother! Like all good things, this came to a quick end as Vietnam and the draft was in full swing. I ended up selling the Corvette prior to entering the Army. I gave my 1950 Ford to my girlfriend to drive to school as she was two years behind me. As much as I hated wearing a suit and tie and doing wedding photography on many a Saturday, that background proved to be quite valuable when a year later I landed in Vietnam after basic training and advanced training as a PFC.
We landed in Vietnam in Cam Ranh Bay. As raw recruits, we exited the aircraft and a Sergeant addressed us asking “Who here knows photography?” Three of us raised our hands. We were then tested. This was one test I am super glad I took. I must have gotten a good grade, as I got the job as a photographer and later editor for the 17th Aviation Group stationed in Nha Trang, Vietnam! So you can clearly see I have been writing my entire adult life starting before the age of 20!
My sisters, who were 7 to 10 years younger than me and later attended the same high school, would tell me that the chain hoist was still in the tree! Years later I would stop at the school and the trees were long gone! I did give the school library one of my “Kirbans Guide to 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals” book. The stunt I pulled as a senior in high school is one that they would never allow anyone to do today. No other student I am aware of ever did this stint. True Story.
HORN RINGS -
Currently we have the next batch of horn rings getting powder coated. In this batch we are getting 2 done in blue and 2 done in burgundy. This process is done prior to inserting the fake black buttons. The price is the same as the grey. However, if you want one of these in either blue or burgundy, you must call Christina and pay for it. It will be sent at the end of next week. Remember, we are only getting 2 of each of these two colors done in this current batch!
1987 GRAND NATIONAL HARDTOP FOR SALE STILL AVAILABLE -
One of my long-time customers (1989?) is going to sell his 1987 Grand National hardtop. Purchased used way back in 1988 and always garaged. Car has been to many of our Open House events when he resided in our area. Car is now located in NC. Richard Clark performed some maintenance work on this Grand National 2 years ago, and Pete Hoffman also installed the window rattle kits. Richard drove the car every day to lunch and got many compliments about the car. At that time Richard Clark put the real value of this car, based on condition, at north of $30 grand! Plus, the SPID trunk label was signed by Molly not once but twice! This is rare as he was at two of our Open House events with the last one in 2007.
He has the original Window Sticker and some of the paint is original. Car has had extremely great care. Mileage is 175,000. Runs strong. Transmission was rebuilt and a new Cold Case radiator was installed.
Here is a list of the factory options in this remarkable Grand National. Front seat reading lamps, power door locks, power windows, electric trunk release, protective body side molding, 6-way power driver's seat, power antenna, limited slip rear, AM/FM stock radio, cruise control, tilt wheel, concert sound speakers, rear defogger, tinted windows, and analog dash. Window sticker shows it sold for $17,7XX.
Upgrades include: Cold Case radiator, translator, and LT1 mass air sensor, mass air pipe. Also RJC power plate, Kirban connecting front brace, front frame brace set, rear seat braces, and under the hood braces. Upgraded fuel pump, body bushings, low fuel warning, KYB shocks, custom-made stainless dual exhaust system with flow master mufflers. New serpentine belt, coil pack, spark plugs, etc. Also a new gas tank.
The interior is in remarkable condition and shows virtually no wear at all. The fact this interior including the driver's seat is extremely nice shows the car has always had good care. All the braces he had installed years ago which goes a long way in keeping the car tight. He even has the key punch outs as well. The fact he has owned it since 1988, maintained it, kept it mostly stock, garaged it all these years, and has the window sticker makes this example a very worthy car to consider buying. You would be hard pressed to find a better example of a 1987 Grand National hardtop for this price and has been maintained as well as this car has had all these years. Perhaps most remarkable with 175,000 miles it still has the powermaster brake setup functioning on his car!
The price is $27,900 OBO. For more info and photos email me directly [email protected] Remember, this has had the same one owner since 1988!!!! We have a lot more photos we can provide if you are interested.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REBUILT ORIGINAL AC DELCO MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR
We are one of the very few sources to offer completely rebuilt original AC Delco mass air flow sensors for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. New mass air flow sensors have been discontinued from AC Delco for several years.
Other available rebuilt units are rebuilt using late-model Camaro mass air flow sensors, not rebuilt from original 1986-1987 Turbo Regal cores like these.
When comparing ours to the various reproductions, it’s important to note that the original one has the “AC Delco” logo embossed on the top cover, which is visible on the car. Others may not have that feature. We have highlighted the embossed logo area with a red arrow in our first photo.
Ours are 100% correct original mass air flow sensors with the proper plug, which came on the car originally.
Original parts will always be the top choice over any reproduction, especially for those wanting to keep their car original.
Sensor has the harness plug in the proper location and comes with a manufacturer’s 90-day Warranty.

LOCK PILLAR REINFORCEMENT PLATES (2) IN STOCK FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY
This 2mm thick spacer is designed to give the door pin more support.
If you look at the area where the striker is attached, more than likely you will see hairline cracks. They are spot welds that hold a cage nut so you can attach the door striker. These spot welds tend to take the place of one of the 2mm spacers and at the same time give the door striker more support.
This lock pillar reinforcement plate is shaped to look as if it came on the car from the factory. The reinforcement plate measures approximately 4″ x 5″, comes powder-coated glossy black for a lasting finish (glossy black will blend with most dark colors doors and all the Grand Nationals), and are sold as a pair. Plates are easy to install.
It’s interesting to note that GM actually had a recall on another Buick model, the Somerset, back in 1985 for having a similar problem. Their solution at the time was similar to these reinforcement plates.
NOTE - You may also be interested in a related item - #6776 GM Door Strikers (2).
Another excellent replacement for any interior restoration.

AFTERMARKET EPA CERTIFIED LOW RESTRICTIVE STOCK CATALYTIC CONVERTER
Many owners may want to replace the original pancake-style restrictive catalytic converter. This is a unique catalytic converter with the proper custom-made 4-bolt flange at the back end. The overall length is 18 inches. This is a direct bolt in replacement and similar to the one we offered over 20 years ago. This only works with the stock 2-1/2 inch diameter downpipe.
It will bolt up to the stock exhaust or to the Pypes Dual Exhaust system, Part #6996, we sell.
Original catalytic converters can easily become clogged over a long period of time. They are also a lot more restrictive due to its pancake style. Some states have very strict laws regarding emissions equipment, even on older cars.
This catalytic converter also can lower any drone sound the current mufflers may make.
We offer this low restrictive catalytic converter, which weighs less than 8 pounds and is EPA certified! It is not a universal converter, but one with the correct 4-bolt flange on the one end that will directly bolt into your Turbo Regal.
With the amount of heat turbo cars develop, the converter can begin to break down internally and clog the exhaust system.
The EPA rules dictate that replacement catalytic converters must go in the same location as the original converter. This unit bolts into that same area and has the same mounting flange.
This catalytic converter comes complete with the 4-bolt exhaust flange. This 4-bolt flange is very unique to these cars as no other G-body application has this style flange. We also offer the 4-bolt flange, Part #7947, by itself for those of you that may want to get a test pipe made for off road use only.
Another excellent replacement for any exhaust restoration.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again.
Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING -
Remember, the weekly Inner Circle always goes out at 3 pm eastern time so subscribers all have the same equal chance on the Rare Parts. All our parts generally are priced to sell and below what others offer. Also our used items are exactly as described. Emails are acknowledged in the order we receive them regardless of when I respond as I am not always by a computer and I only use a flip phone. It's best to email as soon as possible as many of our items sell within the first hour! Do NOT call the office on the listed Rare Parts as you could lose out by someone beating you with an email.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
