Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 10-04-2017 -

LAST WEEK’S MINI-CONTEST UPDATE -

We got a winner to our mini contest within the first 4 hours of last week’s Inner Circle going out by email. The winner is Jeffrey Stern out of Waltham, Massachusetts. Jeff has been a customer of ours for about 15 years.

His correct guess was the glass-style fuses that were widely used prior to the plastic ones found in the Turbo Regals.

The most popular wrong answer was the washer fluid glass bottle that GM used for a number of years.

The below video is from Donut Media and is quite informative about the Grand National that we have all come to love. Eileen came across this on the internet.

GOOD NEWS - WE WILL BE ACCEPTING CLASSIFIED ADS -

Good news - We will now be accepting Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.

Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related.

Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,200 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

My Rare Parts section is only viewed by those that subscribe. Subscription is free, so complaints on what I write are nonexistent!

Ads submitted properly by the previous Sunday would appear that next Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. Ads must be submitted by email to [email protected] Payment by credit card must be done by phone to our office 215-766-1611 x 0.

REPORT FROM FALL CARLISLE -

As is my custom, I always attend every Carlisle event at least for one day. This past Thursday I was at Fall Carlisle.

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows a Turbocharged Riviera I spotted in the car corral. A very nice example and it seemed fairly priced at, I believe, $6900. These cars have yet to gain any real value among Buick collectors. The top right photo shows a mint, 12,000-mile original 1986 Monte Carlo SS. The price tag on this beauty was $23,900. On the information sheet, it said this car had won several national awards.

The bottom left photo shows an original 1984 Hurst Olds priced at $10,500. Being a hardtop, I think this car was priced to sell. The bottom right photo shows a new 8-hole 1986-1987 Turbo Regal hood pad. I think it was fairly priced at $350. This same seller had a few other odds and ends for sale for Turbo Regals.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows a 1987 Oldsmobile 442 one-owner with 32,000 miles, priced at $21,500. The top right photo shows a 1969 GTO. This was one of the original give away cars that Kellogg cereal did in 1969. All the documents supporting this fact were with this car. The original winner was a 13-year-old girl from California. Kelloggs awarded 15 of the 1969 GTOs in 1969. (I don’t think they came in the cereal box as a prize!)

The bottom left photo shows a Barn Find display that Carlisle had made up on their stage. Barn finds continue to be a big draw. The bottom right photo shows the toy engine I bought. The date shows it was produced in China in 1996. The engine actually starts and you can shift gears to change the pitch of the engine. I bought it because it featured the Hurst T-handle and because nothing was broken or missing. I paid $30 for it. Granted, the year 1996 may not sound that old yet, but given time it will age! I had never seen one before I purchased it for my private collection.

I always look forward to the various Carlisle events as I am fortunate to live within a 2-hour drive and plus I always make plans to visit my brother the day prior. As big as Fall Carlisle is, I did not see one Grand National for sale on the grounds.

2007 KIRBAN REUNION T-SHIRT -

I recently purchased a Kirban 2007 Reunion ash grey T-shirt from one of our customers. It is one of the few signed by Molly. This was our 20th Anniversary and the last time Molly was at one of our events.

PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows the front of the XL Reunion T-shirt with Molly’s signature. The photo to the right shows the back of the T-shirt featuring Castle’s 8-second Silver Bullet, which was also featured at our 2007 Reunion event. See the Rare Parts section as this rare Reunion T-shirt is for sale.

THE CHRYSLER DEMON -

While I was at Fall Carlisle, I bought several of the new Demon Tote bags from a vendor. It is the same vendor that I had bought Hellcat items from in the Spring. Also, I discovered that Carlisle still had a few remaining Demon banners, which I also purchased.

PHOTO 4 - The photo to the left shows the Demon tote bag. The photo to the right shows the rare 6 foot by 3 foot Carlisle Demon banner. See the Rare Parts section for prices and quantity available.

THE VERY LAST GRAND NATIONAL -

Last week I got a call from Bob Colvin who still owns the very last 1987 Grand National produced. He needed a pair of hood shocks for his Grand National. It is also the very last G-body car that rolled out of the Pontiac assembly plant December 15, 1987. This Grand National is very well documented from the very beginning.

Bob Colvin owns a GM dealership in Spring Hill, Louisiana. He was smart enough back in the fall of 1987 to inquire about purchasing one of the last Grand Nationals. He was originally promised the one prior to the last one, as GM was going to keep the last one. As a morale booster, GM did a raffle for their employees. The winner of the employee raffle would get one of the last 7 produced.

This raffle was done to keep quality control in check as the rear wheel G-body platform was going to be shutting down and, I believe, some of the employees would be let go.

In talking to Bob, he also mentioned the car just in front of his was a Monte Carlo LS model. If memory serves him correct, it was a dark blue in color. It makes you wonder where that car is today and even if it is still on the road since it is a Monte Carlo LS model and not a SS model.

Bob explained to me that the plant manager made a quick decision, telling Bob to stay an extra day and he would designate the very last car - the Grand National hardtop - would go to his dealership. Of course, Bob was elated at being able to acquire the very last G-body car and the fact it would be a Grand National.

Bob, as well as the GM film production film crew, videotaped the production of his car and said it was weird seeing no other cars come down the assembly line behind his Grand National.

It was an occasion that looking back, any of us would have jumped at the chance to witness. I know various vendors, myself included, would have been lining our pockets with the leftover parts big and small that were in the various bins!

Bob has really made it a lifelong love affair with the unique opportunity of obtaining the very last Grand National, which also was the very last G-body car to come out of Pontiac, Michigan.

Today, the Grand National has 25 actual miles.

It occupies a special space in his home. The Grand National is actually parked in a bedroom! (Not sure how many spouses would be ok with that arrangement!)

Bob has been invited to the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN) held this coming November outside of Chicago in Rosemont, Illinois. He will have this Grand National on display at this event. This is an annual huge event that focuses on the top-notch cars in the country.

Over the years, he has only shown the car a few times, most notably at a few Buick National events.

The question that comes up after 30-plus years of ownership is, would Bob sell the car? The answer is yes. Bob has informed me that he will only consider offers in the high 6-figure range to buy this last Grand National. I am not sure if Bob is open to partial trades or not, but being a GM dealership, there may be some room to work a partial trade into the deal.

He has never offered this Grand National for sale until now. I have Bob’s information, should any of my readers with deep pockets be interested.

THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL -

Whether you recognize it or not, we may be living at the end of a remarkable time period of gas-powered automobiles and the excitement associated with the performance car models. Almost every week, you can read how more and more of the big companies are investing big money into electric cars and cars that drive themselves.

The latest company to jump into the electric car business is James Dyson, the vacuum cleaner maker. He says his firm will spend over 2 billion dollars and expects to have an electric vehicle by 2020. Maybe it will have a dual purpose, clean your carpets and transport you too!

Many of my readers, myself included, have lived thru the various decades and witnessed firsthand the progress that has been made since the first overhead V8 engines in 1949 to the Turbo V6 and the current wave of Chrysler V8 entries such as the Hellcat and Demon. (Sorry GM and Ford, but Chrysler has really upped the ante).

Perhaps more disturbing, in another field one company is working on being able to make cold food deliveries and place it in your refrigerator, even if you are not home! There is an idea that every criminal is just itching to defeat the safe guards. Controlled by your smart phone, it has already been tested. I think a better idea would be to install a fixed refrigerated box outside your house with a code for the delivery person to open it and put the food in! Having strangers enter your house when you are not at home seems pretty risky.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

I am representing this 1987 Grand National hardtop for sale for the owner who resides in Florida. This car is at the top of the value chain and is, without any doubt, one of the best. It has been in the same family since it was new. The original owner bought it when he was single. Soon after, with a growing family, it became evident the Grand National was not a practical car, so he sold it to his brother who I have known for probably 20 years. His brother recently passed away and that is why the car is back down in Florida.

It has been made better than new. When I say better than new, it is mainly due to the fact it has had a very high-dollar repaint applied and everything has been freshened up.

I knew the brother that passed away quite well, since he was heavily involved with GTOs and even wrote a very detailed book on GTOs that is still sold today. He also had a GTO and was a very meticulous individual. His name was Eric White. The book he wrote years ago was titled, “GTOAA of America Pontiac GTO, GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide.”

I will give a copy of Eric’s GTO identification book to whoever buys this pristine Grand National. Eric was very well known in the GTO world at the national level. I would see him every year at the National events during the 1990s. As a matter of fact, we discussed his new book and what he needed it to say since he was using GM logos, etc.

The Grand National is now in his brother’s hand, Kirk White, in Florida. They have every single document with this car since it was new. Plus, they even have the original Window Sticker. They also have every single repair receipt. Over $12,000 was spent on the repaint and to freshening up this car.

It still smells new! A smell that no company as of yet has ever duplicated. If they did, Corvette owners would line up to buy it!

The Grand National has almost every single option. The actual mileage is less than 23,000 original miles. The car is 99% stock with the one exception being an aftermarket alarm system.

It has the stock powermaster brake system with the upgraded Cardone brake bowl. The car has used seat covers, which have protected the original seats. According to Kirk, he doesn’t believe anyone has ever sat in the back seat of this car.

This is a Kirban-quality car based in my numerous emails with Kirk and the fact I knew his brother from our mutual GTO connection for many years.

The new lowered price is $29,900. Keep in mind, receipts come with the car and the repaint totaled over $12,000. The repaint was only done because the car had such a poor paint job from the factory as many of them did.

If you are not able to see the Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the website. You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about.
Simply email - [email protected] - to get on our weekly Inner Circle email.

EMAILS TO KIRBAN PERFORMANCE -

NOTE- If you email us and do NOT get a timely reply, be sure to check your “SPAM” folder. Some emails do not go thru.

If you need to email us, use - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

In some cases, Buick never adjusted the trunk lid rubber stoppers properly. To see if that is the case, simply try to depress the trunk lid while it is closed. If it still moves downward, open up the trunk and adjust the two stoppers outward so the distance is eliminated when you close the trunk lid. A potential rattle has now been eliminated.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
