GM CARLISLE IN PICTURES continued -
The featured car this year at the GM Carlisle event was the Hurst Oldsmobile. There was quite an array of some extremely nice Hurst Oldsmobiles and Oldsmobile 442 models on display.
PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows a unique car show display featuring a likeness to the figure used in the early Oldsmobile magazine ads. The top right photo shows an interior of a bench seat Oldsmobile 442 with the Hurst shifter, and it has the very rare radio block-off plate on the dash. The lower left photo shows one of the early-style cold air systems that Oldsmobile used. Although barely visible, this car has the very rare plastic red inner fender liners. The lower right photo shows the “CARE OF YOUR INDUCTION SYSTEM FOR WINTER USE” decal explaining how to prepare the cold air system for winter use to avoid problems.
RED FENDER LINERS - The red fender liners were an option that Oldsmobile and Pontiac used around 1966-1967 vintage on the A-body cars. I can remember when I first started buying dead GTOs to disassemble, I had no idea the red fender liners were a highly sought-after factory option. I thought it was some aftermarket part. I remember leaving them on a car that I junked many years ago! I am not sure of the reason for the optional plastic fender liners besides the fact they eliminate any rust issues!
EXPLAINING THE SPID CODES (TRUNK ID LABEL) continued -
As I have stated in an earlier Inner Circle, the 1984-1986 SPID labels had 15 columns across and the 1987 SPID label had 13 columns across.
The fewer options your car has, the fewer codes would be listed on the SPID label.
What can be confusing is that even though aluminum brake drums is not an option, you would still have a code of J41 or J42 for steel drums or aluminum drums for the brake format. So, the number of codes would not change.
The GNX is probably the only Turbo Regal model that should all have the same number of codes on the SPID label.
Our 1987 Turbo-T is a fairly low-optioned car. It has 4 even rows of 13 codes across for a total of 52 codes. Based on that, if you have less than 55 codes, I would consider that a low-optioned car. It is probably possible to have a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal and have as few as 42-to-45 codes. This would be very rare. On the other hand, having 85 or more codes would indicate you have a highly-optioned Turbo Regal. The highest number of codes I can recall one of my customers having was 98 codes.
With that being said, I would like to hear from anyone that has less than 50 codes on their SPID label and anyone that has triple digits - 100 or more codes on their SPID label. I would think to hit triple digits the Turbo Regal would have to be a Limited model.
PHOTO 2 - We show two original early SPID labels (1984-1986). Unfortunately, I can’t recall what GM cars I removed them from in the junkyard. Notice on the top SPID label the codes run across in alphabetical order and on the lower label they run down each column in alphabetical order.
I have no idea if each GM car followed a certain pattern or from one year to the next did they switch formats. Perhaps one of my readers can shed some light on this. I don’t claim to be an expert on this. I am learning as I go, like many of our readers.
A SOLUTION FOR THE BROKEN POWER ANTENNA continued -
As we stated in last week’s Inner Circle, we have a solution for a broken original GM power antenna. Actually we have two solutions.
One is we can get yours fixed which would be better than new. Second, we have several original antennas in the process of getting rebuilt. These would also be better than new.
The key feature to making them better than original or the reproductions ones is that the plastic cable is now replaced with a steel braided cable with a plastic covering. My source has been doing this successfully for over 10 years for other GM vehicles. If you have dealt with replacing your power antenna, it’s not a project that is fun to do!
The reproduction antenna that is sold by us and others is actually for a different GM car, which is the reason it comes with no correct bracket. The one we sell comes with a custom-made bracket that Darrell our son made. So, while others may offer it for less money you will need to fabricate some method to install it.
Adding to the confusion is only the original GM power antenna has the original-style hex head tip on the top of the mast. The currently available reproduction, and even the AC Delco replacement we sold years ago, had a mushroom-style tip on the top of the mast. The ones we now offer that are rebuilt will have the correct OEM GM original hex head tip on the top of the mast.
My guess is not many owners realize that the replacement antennas, and even the replacement AC Delco antennas we sold back in 1999-2000, had the mushroom-type tip on the top. This may even be more reason to simply have your original antenna rebuilt. On the original antennas, the bracket is riveted to the mast tube. This bracket was secured by 4 screws on the GM replacement antenna we sold years ago. This is one way to determine which antenna you have.
Here are the steps our source does to rebuild your power antenna:
Checks overall condition to determine he has all the parts needed. Disassembles and cleans the unit to remove all dirt. Checks mast for straightness and does minor straightening, if necessary. Replace bearing with clean units that have been pressure lubed, commutator is resurfaced, and the brushes are degreased. The factory plastic cord/cable is replaced with a braided steel cord/cable with a plastic coating. The mast is then cleaned and re-lubed, and assembled. The mast is then attached to the motor body. The worm gear is greased with Mobil 1 products. Unit is fully tested up and down several times for smooth, quiet movement and proper stops. It is then carefully packaged for return shipping. It comes with directions so you can bench test the antenna before you install it.
It has a one-year warranty.
To have your power antenna rebuilt, you must first contact Christina at our office - 215-766-1611 x 0 - to place the order with your credit card information.
The total price for the rebuild is just $99.95. This includes return shipping to you to any of the basic 48 states. We will give you a “RO” number (Repair Order) and the address you need to ship your antenna to. It does not get shipped to us! The RO number is proof it has been paid for. This RO number must be on your label on your power antenna. You must attach a label with your name and address to it so you are assured of getting your original power antenna back.
NOTE - Do NOT send any of the bezel parts (metal bezel and plastic bezel under the metal one.) Only send the basic antenna. You must unplug the under-the-hood 3-wire harness (gray, white and green wires) from the antenna. Do NOT cut any of the wires.
NOTE - He will be taking a three-week vacation the end of July and the beginning of August. No shipments can be made during these three weeks. We will post reminders about this as the time draws closer.
We also have a limited supply of original AC Delco power antennas currently being rebuilt by our source. This is part #7703. These rebuilt antennas will have the original-style hex tip on the mast. The price is $149.95, which includes shipping to any of the basic 48 states. You must call Christina at our office 215-766-1611 x 0 to purchase one, as supplies are limited. Currently, we only have a few getting rebuilt. If you call and want a rebuilt antenna, we would not charge your credit card until we can ship it.
This past weekend I went to a junkyard to specifically gather up some power antenna parts and to find some of the hex head antenna tips.
PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows two basic original AC Delco power antennas. What GM did (depending on the application) was to attach a secondary bracket to the riveted bracket depending on the car model. You can clearly see the two different styles of mounting brackets. The photo to the right shows the factory label. The part number was the same on both. One showed the year 1984 and the other showed the year 1985 with the wording “Assembled in Mexico.”
PHOTO 4 - The photo to the left clearly shows a neglected power antenna where the mast tube is severely rusted. This would be a “parts only” unit at best! The photo to the right shows the mushroom-style replacement tip (top) and the factory original hex head tip (bottom). These tips can be removed. The hex style takes a 7mm wrench to remove it. It can be difficult to remove as you need to secure the mast, and at the same time you loosen the hex style tip without damaging the mast. A vice grip to hold the mast works best. Of course, in a junkyard, none of that mattered to me!
According to my source, because there are so many possible antennas masts between GM, replacement GM, and now the new reproduction masts, the threads on the masts are not all the same. You would have to re-thread the mast to switch the tip. Also actual masts may appear the same but are NOT interchangeable. We have also found that several styles of the mushroom-style tips were used between replacement GM antennas and the later reproduction antennas.
One thing we recommend you do prior to any power antenna removal is to purchase the Pete Serio booklet - “1984-1987 Turbo Regal - Power Antenna Removal and Installation Guide,” our part #6976.
These different style of tips on the antenna mast made me think of what else GM changed between parts on a production car versus what you could buy over the GM parts counter.
One item that comes quickly to mind is the spark plug wires set. The original spark plug wires were each numbered 1 through 6. They were grey in color with black boots. The replacement wires are not even close to the originals that GM sells today.
If you ordered the carpeted floor mats as an option, the driver’s side had a single cut towards the left side of the mat. The accessory mats you would purchase over the counter all had a cut on both sides of the driver’s floor mat. We are the only source for the correct factory front floor mats, part #6883.
Last, but not least, the replacement power antennas have the mushroom tip whereas the factory original GM antennas had the hex-style tip.
Some of this may not seem important unless you are doing a correct restoration.
Of the three items I pointed out, the spark plug wires are probably the most visible. The spark plug wires we sell (part #1531) and have sold for many years are very close to looking correct and match the original length. They are for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. Years ago we also did spark plug wires that were imprinted with the words “Bad to the Bone” on them. The company that makes our plug wires used to be in our area but moved to Nascar country over a dozen years ago. He makes spark plug wires for several Nascar teams and other companies besides us. Years ago he even bought one of our BMWs.
On a similar note perhaps one of the most rare spark plug wire sets to find would be original spark plug wires for the 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am. They were all imprinted with the 20th Anniversary wording on them.
IMPORTANT NEWS ON REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM DRUMS -
We fully expect to ship all our orders later this week. Cardone was hoping to ship them to me last Friday.
OWN A GNX?
We have a limited number of a 35-page booklet that includes much of the background history of the GNX going back to July 1986.
If you are interested, you must email me personally - [email protected] for more info and pricing.
2 NOS PARTS FOR TURBO REGALS I WOULD AVOID PAYING BIG MONEY FOR -
There are 2 New Old Stock (NOS) items for the Turbo Regal I would think twice before purchasing if they are asking a high price.
1 is the original or replacement old stock NOS AC Delco power antennas. The reason is the plastic cable can easily break due to age, so being new in the AC Delco wrapper is not assuring you that it will work even once. We just had a customer at our shop last week with a real 9,000-mile original Grand National. The cable for the power antenna was broken. You could move the mast up and down by hand. The plastic cable did not break due to lots of use, but rather due to age! I can recall on several of the low-mileage Turbo Regals we sold in the mid-1990s, had broken power antennas.
The other item I would avoid is NOS original 25-plus-year-old GM bumper fillers. They may look pretty still in the wrapper, but it’s the age factor that causes them to crumble either during the paint process or when you go to install them.
Those are two items that personally I would not pay big money for unless the seller is giving you some sort of warranty with it, which is highly unlikely.
J.D. POWER RATES KIA FIRST IN INITIAL QUALITY -
J.D. Power rates Kia Motors first in initial quality by number of flaws found by owners in the first 90 days of ownership. They only had 83 problems per 100 cars, beating out the national average of 105. To me 83 problems out of 100 cars seem like a high number.
If you were having a major operation and the attending physician had a similar score of 83 issues out of every 100 patients, you would look for another surgeon rather quickly!
THE POWER OF YUM YUM DONUTS -
I can recall two very distinct instances where Yum Yum donuts produced great results for us over the years.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s I was going almost every day to the Hurst plant to get customer’s shifters rebuilt. By taking a dozen Yum Yum donuts to the work crew, I was able to get them done in a matter of a few hours. That way I was able to ship them back to my customers the same day.
Years later we had a contract with a local custom house builder to build a 2-story addition on our house. Although it was only a verbal agreement, I told them I would bring a box of a dozen Yum Yum donuts every day for 50 days. Each box would be numbered. By the time they got to box #50, the addition had to be completed. They achieved the goal in 50 days! Probably gained a few pounds along the way! I think they liked the challenge since nobody had ever done that before.

CAR FOR SALE - 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL -
This 1987 Buick Grand National has the optional factory astro-roof (CF5). It has undergone a complete frame off restoration. The seller has fully documented with photos in a binder. The owner even was able to use brand new original Pallex material on the interior. This is a top-notch Grand National where no expense has been spared. Hundreds of hours went into the bodywork alone. All the glass and interior were totally removed. NOS GM parts were used when possible to make this car like new again. The motor was completely rebuilt and balanced. A new Limit Engineering TA 49 turbo was installed.
All new body mounts. NOS GM taillights and bezels were used along with a NOS GM grille. The bumpers were totally stripped with NOS front and rear bumper strips installed.
Here is a chance to own one completely redone and enjoy it. The seller may take another 1986-1987 Turbo Regal in partial trade. The price is $39,500. This car is exactly as described, show quality from any angle, including underneath.
This Grand National is located about 20 miles from my shop. One of the best restorations you will find of a Grand National.

CARS FOR SALE -
From time to time, whenever we spot an unusual or an exceptional car or truck for sale, or one we have for sale, we will put a blurb in our weekly Inner Circle. Also, any cars that our customers have for sale will be featured here and you can see their car with photos on our website. In this category, we will run the descriptions for two-to-three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. Any new vehicles that we add will appear first, so the oldest listing would be at the end of this section.
If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.
LOCAL CAR FOR SALE -
I spotted this car on the way to work this past Monday. It’s an all-original 1982 Camaro Berlinetta coupe.
A one-owner, original paint, garage kept example with a mere 55,000 miles on it. Car is super straight and clean, grey in color with grey cloth interior V8 powered with bucket seats and a console. Even the fancy optional wheels are like mint.
This is the first year for this model. I have known the seller for many years. He originally bought it for his son but changed his mind.
It is priced very reasonable at just $4,495. This car is over 30 years old and only has 55,000 miles on it. No dents, no rust. It would be a nice car to cruise in or detail for shows with maybe a young new driver in your family.
You can email me for more details and photos - [email protected]
The car is maybe 5 minutes from our shop.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Replacement BLACK METAL STOCK BREATHERS (2)
This is one of the key engine parts to keeping your Turbo Regal engine original. This is the black metal breather that came on the front of the passenger’s valve cover. A tube went into the other end that went to the inlet bell on the turbo.
If this breather is neglected, it becomes saturated with oil. Once it is saturated, the oil travels through and down the connecting tube, through the turbo inlet bell, and into the intercooler. The oil can coat the intercooler and the connecting hoses, and eventually gum up the throttle body.
We offer them as a pair, so you will have an extra breather.
Supplies of these original-style black breathers may become limited. Other versions are not black, nor are they metal.
These are identical to what came on your car when it was new.

1984-1987 BUICK TURBO REGAL
CCCI (Computer Controlled Coil Ignition) SensorCheck MODULE
The Computer Controlled Coil Ignition (CCCI) is probably the least-understood system on your Turbo Buick powered vehicle. The most common problem is the “No-Start” condition, and there are very few tests that a car owner is capable of performing to determine a faulty component in this system.
This simple CCCI SensorCheck Module plug-and-play diagnostic tool is designed to troubleshoot your ignition system for the most common “No-Start” scenario. Specifically, it will display a simple LED to indicate the status of the CAM sensor, CRANK sensor, Coil Power and MODULE power. The CAM LED will visibly blink rapidly during idle. The CRANK LED will appear to be continuously on (due to the rapid Crank signal) when the vehicle is running normally. The POWER LED will be illuminated when the MODULE fuse is working. There are 3 LED’s assigned to each model: “HOT AIR” (1984-1985) and Intercooled (1986-1989.)
It can also be used to set the cam sensor!
No CAM signal = No Spark, No Injector pulse
No CRANK signal = No Spark, Only Inj pulse
CAM signal initiates sequential spark. Without it, No spark.
CRANK signal initiates fuel injector pulses.
No Lights, good fuses = Check ECM ground return wire.
This clever device eliminates any guesswork as to why your Turbo Regal won’t start, if it’s related to the cam sensor, crank sensor, coil pack, or coil module.
It comes with easy-to-follow directions. It is all plug-and-play to conduct the tests to determine where the problem is originating. By using LED lights, you can pinpoint where the problem originates.
By a flip of a switch, it works on all 1984 to 1987 Turbo Regals including, the 1989 Turbo Trans Am.
A must-have tool that saves the guesswork when you have a no start situation.
