SEPTEMBER CARTOON -

PHOTO 1 - Our first photo this month’s “Adventures of Tommy Turbo” cartoon. The caption reads, “Will this fix my T-Tops so they will never leak again?”

I think some T-Top owners have probably considered drastic measures to stop the water leaks from the T-Tops. Over the years I have talked to several owners that even had their T-Tops cut off and a solid roof installed. Not an easy cheap project!

On a similar note, we have our new T-Tops sunshades in production locally. Once installed, what you see from inside your car will look 100% like all the other versions that are currently available. The major difference is ours will be very reasonably priced. To cut production costs, we did not have our supplier do any stitching on the edges since you don’t see it anyhow. Also ours are notched specifically so the one edge locks under the molding. The other versions we have seen do not have a specific notch. This design gives the T-Top sunshade perfect alignment so fit is easy to do without having to keep moving it around to center it.

We will have photos and pricing next week. The material is actual headliner material and the standard color will be the grey used in the Grand Nationals. We will also offer other colors for addition costs. The projected price will be about $55 a set.

You can email me direct - [email protected] - for more details and photos, if you can’t wait until next week!

A REPRODUCTION PART WE MADE 20 YEARS AGO THAT IS WRONG -

When we first made the Console Shifter Indicator, part #1589, we actually knew at the time we made it wrong, but wanted to add a little color to the design!

For the past 20 years and after selling probably over a 1,000 or more with the “D” for DRIVE indication in a teal color, although all the letters were white on the original.

The good news is we just ran out of the teal color versions and since we just had a batch made for another GM car, we also had the indicators remade for the Turbo Buicks in the correct all white letters. It will still have the same part #1589.

This reminds me of another project that happened in the GTO field years ago. Hurst wheels all had a gold and black Hurst decal on them originally. Over a period of time, the gold color ink in the sunlight turned to a perfect dark shade of green. One company, who shall remain nameless, reproduced the Hurst wheel decal in green and black thinking those were the correct colors. I informed the company that green was not the correct color as the official Hurst’s colors were gold and black.

Take any T-Tops car that has been exposed to sunlight for 25 years or longer with a grey interior and see just how badly the original carpets have faded. Compare the exposed carpet to the small strip of the original carpet that has been tucked under the sill plate! You will see a vast difference.

T-Tops sunshades are an inexpensive method to preserve the interior of a T-Tops Turbo Regal or you can garage it 24 hours a day.

PHOTO 2 - In the photo on the left we show our old version on the left we have sold for 20 years and to the right is the new 100% correct one. The photo on the right shows a center console. This indicator is available under the same part #1589 and at the same price $10. We no longer have the teal green ones in stock.

GARAGED OVER 18 HOURS A DAY -

True Story - In the late 1980s or early 1990s, besides buying Turbo Regals we bought probably 20-25 various BMWs.

I remember going to look at a 1986-1987 three series BMW that was advertised as being mint. This car was only about 20 minutes from where we lived. It turned out to be owned by one of those small time dealers that flips cars, which I am usually leery of as I like records with the cars I buy.

I looked at the BMW and I told him after a quick once over I was going to have to pass on the car. He then said he had a black Saab turbo convertible with a tan interior that was absolutely flawless, but it had high miles. I think it had like 125,000 miles on it at the time. He swears it’s perfect. So, he pulls out this Saab for me to look at. At the time I never knew anything about Saabs and never owned one. This car was immaculate. I could not believe how clean it was. This car still had the factory leather sample stating what kind of leather it was attached to the driver’s bucket seat. You could still smell the leather. The seller tells me he got it from a guy who owned a company that was able to garage it not only every night, but he was able to garage it every day at work since he owned the company. I was still hesitant to buy it because of my lack of knowledge. I told him give me 24 hours and I would have an answer for him.

I checked with a friend of mine who works on foreign cars and he told me what to look for. The next day I bought my first Saab. It was a weird car with the ignition key on the center console on the floor. I ended up advertising it in our printed monthly Grand News to our Buick customers. I got a buyer from one of our Buick customers. This buyer was a real Saab devotee, but was very hesitant since I knew very little about Saabs. He ended up spending $150 to a company that sent someone out to inspect the car for him.

The result was the car passed with flying colors and the person ended up buying the Saab. Since that time I did buy another Saab out of state and sold it actually to a Saab dealership that was looking for a specific year for a customer. It’s not often that you can sell a used car for a profit to a car dealer!

True story.

JUNKYARD FIND - A 1986 REGAL LIMITED -

A few weeks ago I was at this one local junkyard. It’s one of those junkyards that don’t let customers pull their own parts nor let customers wonder through the yard. It’s one of the older yards in my area that I used to go to when we had a towing business.

The cars are not in any kind of order and some are so well buried in underbrush you can barely see them. He told me he had one Regal in the yard. It’s a good thing he knew where it was because I would probably never have spotted it. It was a black Limited. It looked complete, down to having the keys in the ignition. The inspection sticker on the windshield read 2009, so it was not that long ago. I said I knew there were some parts on it I would buy if he could get them out for me. Or, if he could get the car out of the woods, I would remove the parts if he allowed me.

I then said I would bring a box of donuts if he had the car out of the woods by Saturday for me to remove what I wanted. At this point, I did not even discuss prices, since I knew he would be fair and he knew I would be buying more than one item.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the black 1986 Regal Limited that he pulled out into this clearing for me. The second photo shows the real nice rust-free trunk lid. I also have the key for the lid. It is for sale in this parts listing. I also got both front and rear bumpers, since they had the very desirable aluminum reinforcement braces behind each bumper. It is one way to shed a good bit of weight over the heavy steel ones that are prone to rust.

JEEP PICKUP TRUCK -

At a recent car show I spotted a Jeep pickup truck that had a military theme on the parts the owner used under the hood.

PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows a view of the engine compartment from the passenger’s side. Note the canteen bottle being used for the radiator overflow. The photo on the right shows the driver’s side of the engine compartment. The owner used what looks like an ammo container for a ram air set up!

A CORRECTION FROM LAST WEEK’S INNER CIRCLE -

In the article referring to Photo 2 about the Maurice Motorcycle Hearse, we inverted two of the letters for his website. The correct website is - mauricemotorcyclehearse.com It’s an interesting idea for that true motorcycle enthusiast.

MANUAL SHIFT CARS -

Manual shift cars are quickly becoming a rarity among new car models as they now account for fewer than 5% of U.S. sales.

If you’re my age, you clearly remember when American muscle cars got most of the power shifting through four gears by way of a Hurst shifter. The four-speed shifter later gave way to the five-speed and six-speed. Now we have seven-speed and eight-speed automatic transmissions.

YUGOS - ENTERTAINING ADVERTISEMENT

This ad recently appeared on a local Craigs list. It seems there is a handful of people that believe these are collectible.

Of course, what do I know? If you had told me ten years ago that VW vans from the 1960s would fetch $50 grand and more, that was a bet I would have taken! Even the latest Hemmings Motor News has a one-page article on the ultra rare Yugo convertibles. In 1991 they only made 72 of them.

Below is the recent Yugo ad:

“1991 Yugo EFI. Car is part of my collection just freeing up some space. Motor and trans run good. Manual transmission with good clutch. Clean title in hand. 93k miles. Car just needs a little love. Definitely a head turner. Price is negotiable call me with serious offers. Only a few hundred of these still left on the road they're collectible. $1,300 OBO or interesting trade”

SPECIAL RUN OF CORRECT FITTING 1984-1985 TURBO REGAL PLUG WIRES -

We had a special run made of the correct length 1984-1985 Turbo Regal grey spark plug wires.

We used to sell these years ago, but stopped due to lack of demand. We just had 10 sets made. If you want a set, you must call our office to place your order. The price is $49.95 plus $8 shipping. We only have ten sets available.

I don’t believe any other source has these available in the proper lengths. These are not on our website. You must call our office to order - 215-766-1611 x 0 - specify 1984-1985 Turbo Regal Custom-Cut High-Performance Plug Wires.

RUSSELL STAINLESS BRAKE HOSES STILL ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER -

The popular Russell stainless brake hoses, part #7218 are still on national back order. Unfortunately we do not have any information as to it will be back in stock. Our source checks every day to see when to expect them.

VEHICLES FOR SALE -

From time to time, whenever we spot an unusual or an exceptional car or truck for sale, or one we have for sale, we will put a blurb in our weekly Inner Circle. Also any cars that our customers have for sale will be featured here and you can see their car with photos on our website as well. In this category we will run the descriptions for two to three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. Any new vehicles that we add will appear first, so the oldest listing would be at the end of this section. If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.

1955-1957 THUNDERBIRD FACTORY HARDTOP - FOR SALE -

A local friend of mine has his factory hardtop for a 1955-1957 Thunderbird hardtop for sale. It is for the non-porthole version. It’s in really nice condition. It can be crated and shipped by truck. Priced around $2,200 or best offer. Contact me - [email protected] - for more info and photos.

1980s NISSAN 280 ZX PARTS -

This junkyard we mentioned earlier has a fairly complete T-Top 280 ZX Nissan in the yard. If you know of anyone looking for any of those parts let me know. I do not know the exact year of the car. [email protected]

1987 GRAND NATIONAL HARDTOP - FOR SALE -

Recently a 1987 Grand National appeared in our local area Craigs list. In the description, the seller mentioned he bought it from us back in the year 2000. At the time the car had 221,000 miles on it. It now has 228,000. I called him about his car.

In researching it, I discovered it was the fifth car we sold back in 2000 of the 44 we sold that year. Only two others were cheaper than this one. I gave him a stack of records with the car, which was a one owner. He has driven it less than 7,000 miles in the 14 years he has owned it.

The car still runs out very good and the transmission shifts nice and firm. It does need a headliner and a heater core, since he bypassed the heater core due to it starting to leak. He has the car advertised for more on Craigs List. Since this was one of our cars, it will have the front braces done and the missing body bushings done. The Grand National is fairly priced at $9,995. You can email me - [email protected], if you are interested in this car. The car is located about 35 minutes from our shop location.

The car is almost 100% original with the following exceptions:
- Kirban 140 MPH speedometer...the originals were 85 MPH units (a joke)...I still have the original 85MPH unit somewhere in the attic I believe.
- Kirban console gage holder with an oil pressure and temp gage in it...nothing cut up!
- Pioneer CD player...I have the original stereo and nothing was cut to install the radio. Still has the original power antenna and it works fine!
- Kirban designed oil breather for the valve cover...the originals used to leak so this one is an improved design.

Otherwise the car is all stock, un-abused and unmolested. Jump-in, turn the key and it starts right up. Cruise the car as is or you have an absolutely solid platform for a full restoration. Most of the GNs out there are either mega-buck cars, rust buckets or racecars that have been cut up and flogged...an original fully functional non-rusty car is hard to find.

Clean PA antique title and Antique tags...cheap to insure and doesn't require PA inspection.
This car can be bought for $9,995. His ad on Craigs list has it priced higher, but I told him I felt this is a more realistic price. If you are interested, contact me - [email protected] - for more information. The big thing is it’s only a two-owner car that has had exceptional maintenance over the years.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
304 STAINLESS STEEL ONE-PIECE 3″ DOWN PIPE &
CUSTOM ALUMINIZED TEST PIPE KIT

This one-piece 3″ down pipe will work with any factory-style exhaust Turbo housing. You have to remove the exhaust elbow so this will bolt up to the turbo exhaust housing.

It has an internal wastegate and, unlike most of the other one-piece 3″ down pipes, the internal wastegate is serviceable if needed. You have to modify the side of the turbo shield if you plan to re-use the stock turbo shield. This 3″ down pipe does have a threaded port on it to accept an air sensor or O2 sensor if needed. A plug is included if you do not have to use this port.

This 3" one piece 304 stainless steel down pipe is mandrel bent and will clear the stock inner fender and firewall. Because of the age of these cars it is recommended you have fairly new motor mounts and transmission mount so clearances stay consistent. This down pipe is slightly longer than the stock down pipe, so you have to use the custom 12″ aluminized test pipe that comes in this kit. The test pipe has the correct 4 bolt flange on it to bolt up to the factory style Y pipe. You will not be able to use a catalytic converter unless you find one that has a 3" diameter opening and is only 12″ long.

Kit comes with hardware to secure the down pipe to the Turbo. No gaskets are required.

Gains on a typical stock application in a quarter mile with no other changes are 2-3 mph and 2/10ths in a quarter mile.

This basic design has been popular for many years. This is the latest version.

Kit is drop shipped from our supplier.

NOTE - We recommend this kit be installed by a qualified auto mechanic.

A nice performance upgrade to compliment any other performance modifications you make.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
DUAL FAN CONVERSION KIT and
CUSTOM-MADE PLUG-AND-PLAY HARNESS

We offer three options to upgrade the factory single electric fan on a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal to a dual fan format. Each fan has a 12" diameter sweep. There are no clearance issues between the radiator and the factory intercooler shroud. The unit is 3-1/2" deep. The overall width of the unit is 26" and the length is 16".

The complete kit includes a brand new Intrepid dual fan and a custom-made plug-and-play harness. This harness is specific to the Intrepid dual fan.

One of the beneficial upgrades to make to provide better cooling is to install a dual fan set up to replace the 25+-year-old single electric fan. The factory Buick fan relay cannot safely sustain the full load of dual electric fans. That is why it’s advisable to install a supplemental relay system.

This custom-made plug-and-play harness is specially designed to make the conversion easy. This plug-and-play harness consists of two sealed relays. The relays are both energized by the factory fan relay in your car, reducing the circuit load on the factory relay and permitting full coolant fan control without the risk of overload. The fans are both powered at high speed when cooling is commanded via factory low speed coolant fan control through the ECM. This system assures proper load through the relays with proper power distribution.

This kit plugs into the factory fan connector, unlike other harnesses that require you to cut off the factory connector. The factory connector is entirely reliable and should not be cut.

The plug-and-play harness is made in the U.S.A. and comes with easy-to-follow directions with photos.

We offer 3 options. The first option is for the entire conversion kit, which includes a new Dodge Intrepid dual fan kit and the special custom-made plug-and-play harness. The second option is for the dual fan only. The last option is just for the custom-made plug-and-play harness.

NOTE - We recommend installation be done by a qualified mechanic.

IMPORTANT NOTE - You have to custom make brackets to mount the dual fan housing so you can secure this to the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal radiator core support at the top and bottom. You also have to cut off the original mounting tabs on the side of this dual fan housing since they do not get used. There is a link on the Turbo Buick forum with photos that shows what you have to do. Basically you have to cut off the 2 plastic mounting tabs on both sides of the housing and fabricate some small piece of angle iron to secure it to the original top brackets and the bracket at the bottom of the core support.

This dual fan set up is for a Dodge Intrepid and is the one that most 1986-1987 Turbo Regal owners have used for this modification. It is also the one that will plug into the custom-made plug-and-play harness we offer. Be sure to click on the link below so you fully understand what you need to do to modify the dual fan housing to attach to the radiator bracket and core support.

NOTE - Here is a link to the Turbo Buick Forum. It explains what you have to do to mount the Dual Fan Conversion Kit in the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/threads/ramchargers-fans-intrepid-fans-those-whove-done-it-please-chime-in.380509/

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

Hope to see many of you at the East Coast Regionals in Cecil County Dragway on Saturday, September 20, 2014.
