"WHEELS OF TIME" CAR SHOW -
This past Saturday I attended the annual Wheels of Time Car Show in Macungie, PA. This car show features a wide variety of vehicles, both street rod nature and later muscle cars. You can usually see a huge number of one-of-kind vehicles at this event. The weather, as they say, was picture perfect with low humidity.
I did spot two Grand Nationals. One Grand National has been shown at various car events for almost 30 years. It has also been to several of our Reunion events, including the shows at the airbase in the early 1990s.
PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows the “All the Marbles” plaque this Grand National won at one of our Reunion events at the airbase in the early 1990s. This Grand National won “Best of Show!” The top right photo shows one of the early methods that owners would use to install additional gauges by cutting the dash trim panel above the glove box. The bottom left photo shows another Reunion dash plaque from our Reunion event on his core support. The bottom right photo shows the upgraded GM am/fm CD player in his Grand National.
For sale is the same exact radio. We now have several in stock. As you can see, it looks factory in our cars. It is one of those small upgrades that, in my opinion, do not hurt, but increases the value of your Turbo Regal. See the Rare Parts section for price.
ONE COOL CUSTOM-BUILT 2-DOOR NASH STATION WAGON -
One of the most unusual cars I spotted at the Wheels of Time event was this early 1950s 2-door Nash station wagon. With a quick visual inspection, you can easily tell that someone really put a lot of time and effort into creating this one-of-kind masterpiece. Adding to the mix, it has a matching color unique bumper car that the owner pulls behind it. The bumper car alone is worth several thousand dollars.
This little gem is powered by a 1981 Buick V6 engine that has been upgraded and rebuilt. The original builder of this car built this car around 2002. It was an original North Carolina car so it’s all steel. Besides being Buick V6 powered, it has a Maverick rear, Mustang II front suspension, and even has air conditioning. Weighing maybe 2,800 pounds, it is a sweet combination that really shows tremendous workmanship in a small neat package.
Even the color is unusual. I believe it is a VW color. Although this car was built over a dozen years ago it is still show quality, proving that the builder really did a nice job not only in planning it, but in his execution as well.
This Nash station wagon, with the bumper car trailer, is for sale and is located not very far from where we live. The price is just $22,500. You could not even begin to build this car today for what this gentleman wants for it, let alone even find a two-door Nash station wagon! If this car perks your interest, email me [email protected] for more details.
PHOTO 2 - We show 4 pictures of this custom built, one-of-a-kind Nash station wagon. From time to time, if I see something for sale that seems to be reasonably priced and of possible interest to my readers, I will post it in the weekly Inner Circle.
AC OIL CAPS - STUDEBAKER TRUCKS - A-BODY CARS -
There is a small connection with AC oil caps, Studebaker trucks, and the popular A-body muscle cars. To be more precise, the GTO models, GS models, and early 409 Chevrolets.
In the early 1980s, the original chrome AC oil cap was discontinued by GM. The replacement oil cap was a different size and was painted metal. Remember, GM is in the replacement business, not in the restoration business.
The 1964 GTO took a push-in oil cap as did the early 409 Chevrolet engines. The 1965 through 1967 GTOs took a twist-in cap, as did I believe the early GS Buicks.
In the early 1980s, I determined that if I could get the actual cap made, it could be reinstalled in place of the wrong cap. I faced two issues. First, I had no idea how long GM would have the wrong oil cap available… I needed that cap for the internals of the shell I was making. My investment would be costly, especially if they deleted the current oil cap any time soon.
The next problem was, who could make the double-dimple die with the AC and Oil in the raised embossed format?
I found an old-time tool and die maker in a town near me. It turns out that he did the tooling for Studebaker for their metal truck tailgates in the 1940s and 1950s. Most trucks back then had the truck name stamped into the tailgate. For less than I believe a thousand dollars, he made the die set I needed in order for another source to spin the tops in copper, so when I got them chrome plated they would never pit or rust. Copper or brass are the best material, to work with when getting parts chrome plated.
Back when we did this project, we were able to retail the finished product for less than $30. I can’t member how long we made them, based on how long GM had the wrong oil caps available for us to buy. The project at most lasted maybe 2 years.
PHOTO 3 - Here we show the actual die, the copper shell and the finished chrome AC Oil cap.
We were the very first company to make this part.
MORE MEMORIES FROM MY PAST -
Or, as the saying goes, “Every car buy or car sale has a story.” Some are just more interesting than others. At the same time that I had the first year (1964) GTO, and building the GTO with the best of all the later upgrades, I also built a 1967 ram air 400 Firebird.
Sometime in the early 1980s, I spotted a 1967 Firebird 400 for sale in our local newspaper. I called the seller who was an older person. It turns out he was trading it in the next day at the local Volvo dealership. He said they were giving him $1,200 for his 1967 Firebird. I went to look at the car and said, “What does it take to buy it?” I wasn’t sure if he was kidding, but he said just give me a dollar more and it’s yours. I quickly agreed and for $1,201 I bought an original paint 1967 Firebird 400 with around 52,000 actual miles.
Before long I started to hunt down various parts to make it one of the most desirable combinations. It would become one of the quickest cars I ever owned. It was also the very first car we had where the license plate read, “A MOVER.”
I located a factory ram air system, 4-speed set up, factory hood tachometer, 3.55 gear set, factory ram air exhaust manifolds, ram air IV carb, and 455 aluminum intake. I even found the optional walnut shift knob and the upgraded multiplex stereo radio. Needless to say, these additions vastly improved the performance of what was already a very light car to start with! Any number of these items would sell today for a grand or better by themselves. The car already had the upgraded deluxe interior and factory Pontiac wheels on it.
Fast forward a few years and I put the Firebird up for sale in Hemmings for a mere $3,500. Today the ram air set up alone would easily fetch that much money.
I got a call from a gentleman from the Chicago area. He had a 6-cylinder 1968 Firebird. I explained to him that the car is basically the same as a 1968, but there is a vast difference with my car versus his car under the hood!
A week or so later he flies out with the money. He was a very nice guy, but not your typical muscle car owner, more of a suit-and-tie guy. A quick ride down the local highway and he paid the full $3,500 for our Firebird and drove it home.
We quickly became good friends. As it turns out, he liked a lot of the same rock and roll artists that I did. He owned a company that made electric windings. At the time, I thought they were windings for big machines, but it turns out he made the windings for Williams pinball machines.
He said if I was ever passing through Illinois to stop and see him. In the early 1990s, when I was buying Turbo Regals, I took him up on the invitation on one of my mid-west trips to buy a Grand National. He lived on a huge farm out in the country. He told me he was able to get the same license plate “A MOVER” in Illinois that I had in PA. I thought that was neat. He also said my car was the only muscle car he ever bought. Again, I thought, “Wow he must really like my old car.”
He had this huge building on his property and he wanted to show me what was inside. I could not believe my eyes. This guy had a huge collection of well over 150 pinball machines, all in sequential order by year and all plugged into the floor in rows. In other words, each one was ready to operate! Every machine was restored and in working order.
Only one car occupied this same building - my 1967 ram air Firebird! Here was a serious pinball collector! It turns out he would make parts for various other pinball collectors as well.
Years earlier, in the 1970s when I would travel down south with my Dad, I did buy several pinball machines and brought them home to resell. Not an easy machine to load and unload! We still have one that Darrell and I would play when he was maybe 13 or 14 years old.
My only regret was I did not take any photos of his cool pinball place. A few years ago, I found out he had fallen off a ladder and, due to complications, died. I have no idea where his pinball collection or our Firebird is today.
A true story!
By the way, our old Firebird does hold one unique distinction among the vehicles we have owned. It was not only used on a huge Firebird poster, but it also appears in the Firebird hardbound book.
PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows the cover of the Firebird book entitled “FIREBIRD! America’s Premier Performance Car” published in 1982. The top right photo shows the page that features our 1967 Firebird. Photo was taken near our old house on Sugarbottom Road, Furlong, PA. The lower photo shows the poster our car also appeared on at the time.
THIS IDEA JUST OCCURRED TO ME -
With all the vast electronic innovations on how to track cars, keys, and people, wouldn’t it be nice to have available for some sort of small tracking method, so when you sold your car you could track it. Then maybe 5 or even 10 years later you could look up the car and try to make a deal to buy it back?
UPGRADED LOWER STEERING SHAFTS -
We just got in several more of these refurbished desirable lower steering shafts. If you want one of these lower steering shafts, email me direct - [email protected]
IT SEEMS STRANGE TO ME -
It seems strange to me that in all these years of attending various car shows, I have yet to ever see any of my old cars. For example, the 1949 Olds 76 club coupe and the 1947 Studebaker half-ton pickup. Both of these cars I sold locally. The Studebaker truck was a National winner way back in the early 1970s. I also had a 1940 Packard coupe, I think it was a 120 model?
I would think these vehicles would still be around. They are 3 of the oldest cars we owned. I did have a 1940 Studebaker club coupe, but I know that got wrecked soon after I sold it.
EVEN IN DEATH, LOCAL MAN HAD A LAST WISH AS AN EAGLES FAN -
His last request was to have 8 Eagle football players serve as pallbearers. His reason was “so the team can let him down one final time!” He definitely had a sense of humor. Philadelphia pro sport teams have been in somewhat of a slump, to say the least. The current Phillies baseball team has secured last place in the National league for most of the 2017 season. Their record may end up being the worst of all the pro baseball teams in 2017.
CAR FOR SALE - 1986 MONTE CARLO SS HARDTOP -
I spotted this nice original white 1986 Monte Carlo SS hardtop for sale this past weekend. It is a 3-owner car that has not been used in the last 2 years. Mileage is under 60,000. It has the typical burgundy interior, all original, even has the upgraded EQ radio. posi rear, power windows, power locks, tilt, cruise, and power trunk release. Car is very straight. Nice interior. This is a very solid car. The car seems reasonably priced at $4,500. For more info and photos, email me direct [email protected] Car is located about 30 miles from us. The reason for selling this car is the owner was looking for a T-Top car and recently found a solid one.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -
I am representing this 1987 Grand National for sale for the owner who resides in Florida. This car is at the top of the value chain and is, without any doubt, one of the best. It has been in the same family since it was new. The original owner bought it when he was single. Soon after, with a growing family, it became evident the Grand National was not a practical car,so he sold it to his brother who I have known for probably 20 years. His brother recently passed away and that is why the car is back down in Florida.
It has been made better than new. When I say better than new, it is mainly due to the fact it has had a very high-dollar repaint applied and everything has been freshened up.
I knew the brother that passed away quite well, since he was heavily involved with GTOs and even wrote a very detailed book on GTOs that is still sold today. He also had a GTO and was a very meticulous individual. His name was Eric White. The book he wrote years ago was titled, “GTOAA of America Pontiac GTO, GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide.”
I will give a copy of Eric’s GTO identification book to whoever buys this pristine Grand National. Eric was very well known in the GTO world at the national level. I would see him every year at the National events during the 1990s. As a matter of fact, we discussed his new book and what he needed it to say since he was using GM logos, etc.
The Grand National is now in his brother’s hand, Kirk White, in Florida. They have every single document with this car since it was new. Plus, they even have the original Window Sticker. They also have every single repair receipt. Over $12,000 was spent on the repaint and to freshening up this car.
It still smells new! A smell that no company as of yet has ever duplicated. If they did, Corvette owners would line up to buy it!
The Grand National has almost every single option. The actual mileage is under 23,000 original miles. The car is 99% stock with the one exception being an aftermarket alarm system.
It has the stock powermaster brake system with the upgraded Cardone brake bowl. The car has used seat covers, which have protected the original seats. According to Kirk, he doesn’t believe anyone has ever sat in the back seat of this car.
This is a Kirban-quality car based in my numerous emails with Kirk and the fact I knew his brother from our mutual GTO connection for many years.
The new lowered price is $29,900. Keep in mind, receipts come with the car and the repaint totaled over $12,000. The repaint was only done because the car had such a poor paint job from the factory as many of them did.

URGENT NEED FOR CORRECT STEERING WHEEL CORES -
We have an urgent need for correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores that are not bent. They can have minor rust on the spokes but cannot be pitted. If you owe us a steering wheel core, please send it in to get your core deposit back.
In order to continue this service, we have had to raise the core price. Without cores, owners can’t get a redone leather-wrapped steering wheel. Help us continue this needed service. We now issue a Letter of Credit for $100, if you have a correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel core.
EMAILS TO KIRBAN PERFORMANCE -
NOTE- If you email us and do NOT get a timely reply, be sure to check your “SPAM” folder. Some emails do not go thru.
If you need to email us, use - [email protected]
TIP FROM KIRBAN -
Just under the bottom part of your grill is a long thin plastic panel secured by four 10mm screws to the back of the front bumper support. Usually this plastic panel is warped, so you can see parts of the edge along the top area of the bumper. To correct this, unbolt the plastic panel and lengthen the holes on the panel so when you reinstall it, you can align it better and you no longer see a bulging lip around the top edge of the bumper.
I would do this on probably on 25% of the Turbo Regals I was buying to resell.
TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

CUSTOMIZED BUICK TAILLIGHT LED WALL DISPLAY -
CHROME EDGE OR PLAIN
During one of my many trips to various junkyards, this idea recently came to me. It’s a cool way to offer an actual original Buick part that you can personalize in the section for a license plate.
Some of you probably save you old license plates or mementos from a previous car. Now you can mount your old license plate or logo plate in this unique wall display. Better yet, you can insert a picture of you and your pride and joy in that space (see photos.) The ideas are endless.
We purchase original taillight assemblies from used Buick Regal or Century models. Both taillight assemblies are vintage early 2000 models. These are not easy to find in perfect condition.
Each taillight assembly is pre-wired with 6 LED bulbs and a 9-volt battery with a switch. Hanging hardware is attached and the display comes ready to hang on the wall. You can light it up in your garage or work shop.
Each taillight assembly has been polished and cleaned. Display piece measures approximately 38" wide and weighs about 5 lbs.
We offer two versions. The version with the chrome edge (#KE-018) is from a Buick Century model. The plain version shown without the chrome edge (#KE-019) is from a Buick Regal.
NOTE- Some assemblies may have the Regal model or Century emblem still on the surface. It can easily be removed, since it is merely stuck on.
Our photos show both versions and 4 different ideas on what to put in the section where the license plate would normally go.
Here is a unique way to have something that you can personalize to your liking, and know that it is not something that has been mass produced since it is made from an original Buick part.
The top photo shows the wall display lit. The lower photos show ideas on how the license plate area can be personalized with a license plate or photo.
Our second photo shows the wall displays without any insert.

UNDER-THE-HOOD STAINLESS STEEL BUTTON HEAD BOLTS, SCREWS & WASHERS (110) SET
Here is an easy method to dress up the engine bay area under the hood by replacing the factory hardware bolts with a new button head stainless set.
Developed by a fellow Turbo Regal owner several years ago, we are able to make this set available to our customers.
Each set comes with easy-to-follow directions. Each piece in the set of hardware is clearly marked, so you can simply remove and install each bolt one at a time. We suggest you replace one piece at a time, and put the original hardware in the same marked bag for future reference.
The set includes -
Bag 1A & 1 - A set of bolts and screws that secure the fenders to the inner fenders.
Bag 2 - The set of bolts that secure the radiator top plate support to the radiator.
Bag 3 - The battery hold-down bolt.
Bag 4 - The core support plate bolts.
Bag 5 - The hood latch at the core support bolts.
Bag 6 - The hood latch on the hood bolts.
Bag 7 - The hood shock at the hood bolts.
Bag 8 - The hood hinges, top and bottom bolts.
Bag 9 - The inner fender ground screws.
Bag 10 - The header panel bolts.
Bag 11 - The bolts to secure the turbo shield to the turbo for the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regals. If you own a 1984 or 1985 Turbo Regal, these bolts would not be used.
There is a total of 110 button head bolts, screws, and washers in this set - 54 button head stainless screws/bolts and 56 stainless washers.
The stainless steel washers in this set are two different sizes, so when they are installed correctly, they stay centered on the bolt. This makes a nice, even appearance.
Our photo shows the complete set and the directions that show where most of them go under the hood.
Excellent upgrade to replace rusty bolts for any under-the-hood restoration.

Our granddaughter Devyn, is enjoying the fast pace of Penn State. She even has a professor that is from Vietnam. It’s hard to believe that 50 years after I served in Vietnam, she has a professor who is from Vietnam!
I reminded her I had been to college few years back. I bought a Grand National out of the New England area and the seller worked at a college, so I got to drive on to the college campus and pick up his Grand National.

IN CLOSING -
Our granddaughter Devyn, is enjoying the fast pace of Penn State.
