Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 08-29-2018 -
LABOR DAY WEEKEND SCHEDULE –
Because Labor Day is next Monday, our office will be closed this Friday, August 31st and also Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd. Note - No orders will be shipped on those 2 days.
NOTE – We have added a new feature to the Inner Circle photos. When you click on the photo, an ENLARGED photo popup will appear. This will help to view the photos larger. This is only available since 08-15-2018 Inner Circles and any future Inner Circles. It will not work on the older Inner Circles.
The enlarged popup is not an option on the general parts pages on the website.
THE 3.8 SFI TURBO ENGINE WITH INTER-COOLING –
I think most owners would agree the engine in the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals is what made these cars so special. Especially over the previous two years when Buick stepped it up by adding an intercooler system.
As time goes on it is getting increasingly more difficult to maintain a 100% stock looking engine.
All the companies, ours included, have worked hard to help owners retain that original look. In recent times one part the mass air flow sensor we have had no success getting it rebuilt correctly. Just seems no company that I am aware of can recalibrate them or whatever is needed to get it back to function like new. By today’s standard that plastic mass air flow sensor is very primitive. Rebuilt ones you may find at a local auto store in most cases are not 100% correct looking. Most rebuilt mass air flow sensors are a Camaro 6-cylinder mass air flow sensor that has been modified to fit the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal application.
Your best option is the Translater with the LT1 mass air flow sensor. Both items we carry along with a custom bracket to secure the Translator under the hood. This format seems to be the most popular option. Our part numbers are #7326 for the Translater $199.95, #7342 for the rebuilt LT1 mass air flow sensor, and #7785 for the custom Translater bracket $29.95. The Translater has proven to be a perfect answer to replace the stock mass air flow sensor.
PHOTO 1 – We show an 8 by 10 factory Buick photo of the new 1986 3.8 SFI turbo engine. From all the photos I have seen of this motor, they all show a satin black inlet pipe or up pipe as it is called. That version to my knowledge never saw production. Note how the plug wires all stay clear of the edges of the upper plenum. You want to make sure your spark plug wires do also as the sharp edges of the plenum can cause misfires.
Our spark plug wires duplicate the original spark plug wires in length and are grey with black boots. Part #1531 is the number for the factory style spark plug wires. The cost is $59.95. We also sell the 5 factory GM wire separators, part #6803 for just $8.95 for the 5 holders. This is a key part to secure the spark plug wires away from any potential rubbing or exhaust manifold heat.
Last, but not least the original oil filter was black from looking at this photo and from what I remember in years past. So, the next time you need to get an oil change and you have an original 1986-1987 Turbo Regal spray paint the oil filter glossy black. Simple enough!
TURBO REGAL AND BRAKE PROBLEMS –
While plenty of different options and opinions exist for changing out the powermaster brake unit there is two parts to upgrade the brake system that most owners can agree on. One part we highly recommend is to examine your brake proportioning valve also called the combination valve. GM used 4 different suppliers during production. Since this valve is located under your driver’s side floor pan it is prone to rust.
Why Buick had four different suppliers? I have no idea. Three of the suppliers Bendix, Delco-Moraine, and Kelsey made the combination valve in steel. The fourth supplier, Weatherhead made the combination valve in brass. Brass doesn’t rust. This combination valve is located under the driver’s floor pan and is about the size of your closed fist.
Your chances of having the brass combination valve is very slim to none. The other combination valves can lead to rust issues. This is especially after 30 or more years exposed to the elements. We sell a reproduction of the brass proportioning valve ##7189 for $49.95. Another highly recommended upgrade to make is to replace the rubber brake hoses going to your front brake calipers. They are now 30 plus years old and can swell up when you apply the brakes. This in turn causes more brake travel.
The stainless brake hoses we sell are unique to the Regal brake calipers and we sell them under #7218 for $98.95. It is a set of 3 as it includes the one that goes over the rear end pumpkin. It pays to do both of these upgrades at the same time to save labor costs and flush your brake fluid at the same time.
You should get a slightly better brake pedal by simply changing out the rubber brake hoses to the front calipers to the stainless hose kit.
PHOTO 2 – The photo on the left shows the cover of this rare Buick manual entitled “Parts Identification and Inspection Guide 1986.” I picked this rare book up years ago simply because it has the Power Six logo on the cover so I knew it had references to the Turbo Regals. The photo on the right shows the page showing the information on the proportioning valve or combination valve. To the bottom left of the illustration it lists the 4 GM suppliers. It also notes that Weatherhead valve is brass.
FACTORY GM POWER TRUNK RELEASE –
This is probably one of the easiest and practical options you can add to any Gbody car. The electronic solenoid merely attaches to your existing trunk latch once you bend one tab out of the way so the solenoid cab trigger the trunk latch. It’s a single wire from the solenoid unit to the one side of the trunk release button the other lead wire from the trunk release button goes to a constant hot spot in your fuse box. Ideally you want the electric trunk to operate when the key is off or on.
Originally GM mounted the trunk release button on a small metal bracket on the inside ledge of your glove box. I don’t have that bracket so you would have to mount the trunk release button in a suitable place that makes sense for you. Most cars today the trunk release button is near the driver. Drilling a small hole in the lip under your dash is a logical place.
PHOTO 3 – Shows this mint used factory power trunk release that I recently found in a junkyard along with the correct trunk release button. Also pictured with it is a super mint used correct GM Made in England radiator cap. See the Rare Parts section as this is a package deal that can be purchased. They are hard to find looking this nice after 30 or more years.

We also now have more Pypes exhaust systems, part #6997, in stock.
ROAD TOLLS –
We all pay tolls some more than others depending on how often you drive on a toll road. Some people do it every day for their job. What I find baffling is how so many drivers can get away with not paying the tolls. In my local paper they claim in Pennsylvania turnpike tolls the state is owed more than $17 million dollars! They estimate that 10,000 Pennsylvania drivers cheat on road tolls. Meantime road tolls have increased every few years. The article shows 4 individuals alone account for over $300 grand in unpaid tolls.
These 4 individuals are definitely repeat offenders. With the technology today why can’t they nail these toll cheats at the time they commit this crime? Seems to me they are probably doing it the same time each day on the same stretch of toll roads. If a private company was losing $300 grand due to 4 employees they would have been shown the door way before it escalated to that degree. The State has let the situation get so bad that those that committed the crime will never be able to pay the monies due to fines and tolls. The State needs to act before the numbers get into the thousands of dollars. This is called logic thinking! I am sure Pennsylvania is not the only state with these cheaters on road tolls.
Honest drivers end up paying more to make up for those that cheat.
DELAWARE HAS SOME PRETTY EXPENSIVE TAGS -
I am not sure how it works, but there is quite a demand for very low number license plates in Delaware that apparently can be reissued to another person. I am not sure who gets the money from these auctions but they are highly sought after in Delaware. Recently the number 20 license plate became available so it was auctioned off. The winning bid for Delaware license plate #20 was a cool $410,000. I think if I paid that for a metal license plate I would not leave it on my car at night! My wife would also want me to get my head examined!

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –
1984-1987 G-Body (Including Buick Turbo Regal) -
WINDOW RACER™
The Window Racer™ - Because everything should go fast…
Make your 30+year-old power windows fly up and down like they never have before. Even better than they ever were new! Your windows will be just as fast as a new vehicle.
Simple installation, just plug and play.
If you have a power moon roof, it’s on the same circuit so this unit will make that operate faster too.
NOTE - It will also work on other vehicles if it has a 30 amp circuit breaker.
An excellent upgrade for your car.
We also offer a Window Rattle Elimination Kit, #7170. This replaces a lot of the worn out components in the door.
NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7170 Window Rattle Elimination Kit, #6949 Brand New Power Window Motor Kit, #7068 Reproduction Driver’s Side Dual Power Window Switch, #7069 - Reproduction Passenger’s Side Single Power Window Switch, and #7217 Reproduction Outside Door Sill Weatherstrips (2).
Here are some of the most common questions asked of the manufacturer:
Q - How hard is it to do and long does it take to install the Window Racer?
A - It will take you longer to get some tools together to access the fuse box. Usually a flat-head screw driver, 7mm sockets, etc. You are accessing the cover of the fuse box.
You simply find the 30 amp circuit breaker in the fuse box marked for the power windows. You remove the current 30 amp circuit breaker and install into Window Racer plug end the same way you removed the circuit breaker. The plug looks just like the circuit breaker you are removing.
You then plug the Window Racer where the circuit breaker is located.
Then you take a screw #10 or smaller and ground the black wire to a suitable ground. The key turned forward the red light will come on to let you know the unit is working. If the light does not come on, verify a good ground and that your key is turned to the accessory position.
Q - How do I know if it is working? I plugged it in but my dead window still isn’t working. Why?
A - Window Racer does not fix bad wiring, a bad motor, or switch. When the you hit the window switch, the green light comes on. You know that the circuit is completed and working. Motor is good and the circuit breaker is fine. The window is now going faster than I ever thought it could.
Q - How many Window Racers do I need for my vehicle?
A - Just one. It works all the windows and the factory power moon roof, if your car has a moon roof.
Q - My power moon roof?
A - Yes, it will make your factory moon roof fly back and forth, just like your windows.
Q - Can I operate all the windows and the moon roof at the same time?
A - Yes, the speed is quicker even if you operate both at the same time. However, it is not faster if you operate only one window.
Q - Can the Window Racer burn up my wiring? Will it cause damage to my switches? What about the motor, it has to be hurting the motor right?
A - No. Actually it takes less amps to operate the motors then it did from the factory. The Amp Load is what generally causes the switches and motors to die. You know this if you have or had a weak motor. Your switch went bad and you replaced this because it was easier than replacing the motor.
Q - Well this leads me to another question. Will it make a bad motor run like new?
A - During testing we have seen motors that allow the window to go down but not go back up. When Window Racer was installed, it actually allowed the window to go back up. Of course, not as fast as a good motor.
Q - Ok, this leads me to another question. What if I am out and for some reason the Window Racer would go bad? Am I stuck with my windows up or down?
A - No, the Window Racer has an internal protection because we know there will be that one person with two bad motors who doesn't want to change them and it will eventually kill the internal protection. If for some reason the unit fails, the circuit breaker allows the vehicle to go back to the slow factory operation like normal.
Q - How long is the Warranty?
A - There is a 1-year Manufacturer Warranty.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

THE 3.8 SFI TURBO ENGINE WITH INTER-COOLING –
I think most owners would agree the engine in the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals is what made these cars so special. Especially over the previous two years when Buick stepped it up by adding an intercooler system.
