Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 08-23-2017 -

LAST WEEK’S CONTEST WINNER -

It took only about 30 minutes last Wednesday after the Inner Circle was sent out to get a winner for our contest. Congrats to Chris Tobie who had the correct answer. He is one of our good customers who also is a Honda expert. He has one of those dream jobs. Chris works at Honda in Marysville, Ohio in the NSX Performance Refresh Center. The plastic 13 inch long Corvette was used to rewind VHS tapes.

For you youngsters, VHS video tapes were prior to the DVD format back when Blockbuster stores were virtually in every town. I bought it for $5 partly because in 1970 my wife and I had a beautiful blue on blue 1963 Corvette coupe.

Some of the popular wrong answers were cassette player and phone.

VARIOUS RADIO OPTIONS FOR THE 1984-1987 TURBO REGALS -

Most 1984-1987 Turbo Regal owners are familiar with the various radios that Buick offered for our cars. The top-of-the-line was the am/fm cassette with the EQ feature. With a $504 price tag, that option was not a popular option, but was standard in all the GNX models. Unfortunately, our cars saw production just before the factory GM am/fm CD players came on the scene in various Buick models.

When the CD players did come out I am sure they were quite costly so, once again, finding those early GM am/fm CD players today is quite rare. Adding to the problem is, at some point in the early 1990s, GM went to an entire new shell on their radios, thus making it difficult to simply install the factory studs and factory side brackets needed to secure the later GM am/fm CD players into any 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. Jumping forward a few more years and the GM am/fm CD radios became even larger, so none of them would fit in the opening in the stock radio bezel.

Making it even tougher to find suitable radios today is the fact many of the factory parts necessary to repair them are no longer available.

With all that being said, most of the GM am/fm CD players that can fit our cars are in very short supply. I am fortunate as I’ve been dealing with a radio shop that has been in business since 1963. I started dealing with them around 1980. This is the same company that used to recalibrate the 145 speedometers for us when they had parts available for them.

I recently got to see their storage area where they have hundreds of all kinds of factory radios that were “take outs” over the years. I showed them the ones I was looking for, so they put them aside and they will test them so they can put a warranty on them. These units are all like brand new.

The first GM am/fm CD players have what is known as a 21-pin plug whereas our radios have a 12-pin plug. Fortunately, a harness is available that lets you plug the 12-pin harness into the 21-pin format. The other difference is the antenna lead is a different diameter, so that requires an antenna adapter, which we also have. See the Rare Parts section for price and availability.

As long as you have the factory original radio side brackets and the studs on the factory radio, you can easily install one of the later GM am/fm CD players that we list under the Rare Parts section. Even better is the fact we will give you a Letter of Credit of $50 for your stock radio against any of our website parts. All I require is that you email me a photo of the front and back of your radio to be sure it’s one I want. My email is [email protected]

I think most Turbo owners would agree - an upgrade with the later GM am/fm CD player does not hurt the value in any way. For example, I just sold one of the GM am/fm CD players to a customer who spent over $300 having his original GM radio repaired!

Not all G-Body 1984-1987 models had the same radio format. For example, the Monte Carlo SS models did not go to the style radios that we had in our 1984-1987 Turbo Regals until the 1986 model year. Prior to 1986, the Monte Carlo still had the older style radio that had the volume button on the left and the tuner knob on the far right. That radio format dates back to the 1970s and earlier.

Of course, on the other side of the coin, Chevrolet was smart enough not to offer a power antenna in the Monte Carlo SS models, which time has shown was a good move. I am not sure about the Olds Cutlass and Pontiac Grand Prix models and what years had what style radios in them for the 1984-1987 years.

I don’t claim to be a GM radio expert, but I have learned a lot from going to car shows, junkyards, and seeing the various radios at my friend’s shop for this article. Electronics in cars has changed vastly in the last 30 years and continues to do so. I will probably write more about various GM am/fm CD players in a future Inner Circle issue.

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows the adapter harness that takes your factory 12-pin at one end and converts it to the 21-pin. The photo also shows the antenna adapter that you also need. See the Rare Parts section as we have some of these available for sale. The top right photo shows what the factory brackets looks like on your factory 1984-1987 Turbo Regal radio. Note that both brackets are the exact same. Brackets shown are painted, the original will be bare metal and prone to rust. See the Rare Parts section as we do have a few of these for sale with the mounting studs.

The bottom left photo shows a back view of the stock radio on top, and under it is the later GM am/fm CD player. Notice the plug outlets are different. Also the later GM am/fm CD players have a heat sink to eliminate the heat on the side of the radio, something the earlier radios lack. The bottom right photo shows one of the factory am/fm CD players that we have listed in the Rare Parts section. It has a satin black face with glossy black control buttons. We have several available, complete with the 21-pin to 12-pin harness and antenna adapter included.

TWO 1985 BUICK REGAL COUPES -

We mentioned the other week about buying two 1985 Regals. One had been parked outside for probably 5 years or longer. The other was virtually buried under a mountain of boxes and stuff in a garage for probably 8 to 10 years. All I could see on that car was the back end when I made my offer to buy it.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows the two-tone 1985 Regal Limited that I bought. In top right photo you can barely see the back end of a black regular 1985 Regal that I also bought. In the garage, next to where the black Regal was, there was also this partially buried 1969 red-on-red Camaro with a white vinyl top. The bottom left photo shows this 1969 Camaro that is a real documented SS/RS 396/375 HP car that he is in the midst of restoring for a customer. Probably not visible, but on the one far side of this Camaro is another 1985 Regal that I did not buy as we could not come to an agreement on the price, nor could I even see more than 10% of that car due to so many boxes piled up on it.

It had a fairly new six cylinder engine in it which to me did not warrant a higher price. The bottom right photo shows the two 1985 Regals as they now sit on our driveway. What is nice about these two cars is that all the parts are there, unlike when you go to a salvage yard. Both cars have very nice header panels. The black one has real nice tan interior parts. It’s unusual but the two-tone Limited Regal has crank windows! The seller was extremely nice to deal with and even arranged for a friend of his to deliver both Regals to my house.

UPGRADED LOWER STEERING SHAFTS -

I completely sold out of the upgraded lower steering shafts I got in last week. My source has more, and he hopes to send me later this week. I am referring to the lower steering shafts that have the metal joints at both ends rather than the rag style joint. These shafts continue to be difficult to find even for us. Our part number is #7574. It can be paid for with a credit card. The price of them will soon be increasing slightly.

If you want one of these lower steering shafts, email me direct - [email protected]

BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THIS NEW PART -

Under New Parts Section we now have a complete set the reproduction 1984-1987 Turbo Regal Door Panel Escutcheon Trim 8-Piece Kit, our #7808 available. This includes all four of the chrome plastic trim moldings as well as the 4 strap caps. These are excellent quality to replace the upper door panel trim. Our part number is #7808 and the price is $164.95

This kit will be on our website soon.

IN CASE YOU’RE WONDERING -

Two weeks ago we mentioned that we bought a car for under $3,000. The small car lot I put it on near our house sold it within 10 days. I guess I haven’t lost my touch for finding nice cars.
Ironically, it was a 2003 Monte Carlo SS with over 140,000 miles.

MEMORIES FROM MY PAST -

Here is one such story that connects the first GTO I bought to resell, around 1978 and how it lead up to me later getting to know Ron Sklenar, the original owner of GNX #547.

My wife and I were going to her parent’s house for dinner one night. My wife was already there and I was supposed drive down for dinner. I happen to glance in our local paper and saw a 1965 GTO hardtop for sale for $500. I called and it was basically in the same direction as where I had to be for dinner.

I went to look at the 1965 GTO first. It was a hardtop with faded original blue paint, tri-power, and a 4-speed. In other words, this GTO was the perfect combination. Remember back then they made some automatics as well. I bought it that night for $350. Remember this was 1978 and sixties muscle cars were at their lowest point in value. I would later list this 1965 GTO in Hemmings Motor News for around $1,500. The car sold quickly.

When I got the GTO, I remembered my wife’s cousin had a red 1965 GTO tri-power 4-speed. He had stopped driving it around 1976. I took my recent purchase over to compare my 1965 GTO to his.

Fast forward to 1982, and I am at a huge Pontiac Meet in Lancaster, PA, at Jones Pontiac.

At this show I was selling a 1970 two-tone blue and white GTO that had a factory 3-speed shifter, which is quite rare today. A guy name Ron Sklenar was at this Pontiac meet and bought the 1970 GTO from me. It was the first time I met Ron.

He was a lot like me and quickly sold the 1970 GTO. Fast forward to 1987, I tell Ron that my wife’s cousin has a red 1965 GTO that he stopped driving in 1976 and he was moving from his house and wanted to sell his 1965 GTO. In September 1987, he bought my wife’s cousin’s red 1965 GTO hardtop. Ron paid me a commission and came out to our house to pick up the car driving a 1985 Buick Regal T-Type.

In December of 1987, one week before Christmas, he would buy GNX #547, which is how most of my readers know Ron and the story behind GNX 547.

I called Ron last week to verify how we first met up and if he still had the red 1965 GTO. Yes, he still has the red 1965 GTO and all the paperwork from me on the car. It will be 30 years next month, September, when he bought the red 1965 GTO. He paid $3,700, which included my commission for the 1965 GTO. Today $3,700 would barely pay for the tri-power and ralley cluster dash in the car!

This is a true story. One could say Ron made two good car buys in the later part of 1987!

THIRTY SEAT POSITIONS -

Besides having a $75,000 price tag, the new Lincoln has a driver’s seat that has 30 possible different seat positions. I think the power driver seat in the Turbo Regal has, at most, a grand total of 8. Of course, most of us myself included, can easily lift a Turbo Regal driver’s seat whereas I am fairly certain for one person it would be a major struggle to remove a Lincoln power driver’s seat single handed!

In all my car buying years, I can never recall buying or owning a Lincoln. My Dad owned I think two Lincolns back in the day. My Mom, on the other hand, favored Cadillacs. Her thinking was with five kids, in case of accident, we were in a safer car due to the Cadillac’s massive size.

I SPOTTED THIS 1987 MONTE CARLO SS HARDTOP FOR SALE LAST WEEK -

While at a local car show this past weekend, I spotted a 2-owner 1987 black Monte Carlo SS hardtop for sale. It had just a mere 36,000 miles on it and was 100% original. Woman driven, non-smoker and was always garaged. The black paint has the typical issues that the Grand Nationals have. The body is super straight and the underside is very clean. It does have most of the options including limited slip. Car has a mint grey interior. The factory wheels could use some cleaning up. The car does have all new tires.

The Monte Carlo seems to be reasonably priced at just $12,500. This car is located about 20 minutes from our house. For more information and photos, email me direct [email protected]

1986 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

This 1986 Grand National hardtop is within 10 minutes of our warehouse in Plumsteadville. It has been off the road since 2004 and has less than 50,000 actual miles on it. The paint appears to be original and has the usual crow’s feet in the paint, but the paint still shines.

The car is very well optioned. Options include, power windows, power locks, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, am/fm cassette with EQ option, analog dash, factory alarm, power seat, power antenna, posi, factory body side molding, and door edge guards. It does have aluminum front bumper support. Front and real fillers appear to be the old-style cheap fiberglass ones.

Here are the good points: Low mileage, under 50,000, and the interior is almost perfect. All the it needs a headliner and visors. Doors shut nice and tight. Original wheels are all very nice. Body is very straight.

Here are the bad points: It has the factory exhaust, which needs to be replaced. Because it has been sitting in a barn, it has the usual rust on the frame and suspension parts. However, the floor panels are very good. Under the hood is not pretty. Again, due to sitting, it needs a hood liner, and complete engine compartment clean up and detail. At one time it did have a dump pipe as there is a hole in the passenger inner fender. It needs hood shocks, which would be expected on a car that has not been on the road in 13 years. It lacks the factory air cleaner box and oil tube and cap. I am not sure if the owner has those parts or not. Car needs tires and outside door sill weatherstrips.

All the bad points can easily be rectified. The 2004 inspection sticker proves it has not been on the road in 13 years. The miles are low miles. The 1986 is quite rare. It is a hardtop and all the inside pallex material is like mint.

Turbo Regals are getting tougher to find, especially low mileage ones. This is one you can drive now with just fixing a few things such as the exhaust system. Then over the winter, depending on your skill set, you can detail the engine compartment and address other issues. The buyer would also get a 15% discount off any of our website parts they want for their new purchase.

Asking price is $17,500 firm. For more information and photos, email me direct [email protected]

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

I am representing this 1987 Grand National for sale for the owner who resides in Florida. This car is at the top of the value chain and is, without any doubt, one of the best. It has been in the same family since it was new. The original owner bought it when he was single. Soon after, with a growing family, it became evident the Grand National was not a practical car,so he sold it to his brother who I have known for probably 20 years. His brother recently passed away and that is why the car is back down in Florida.

It has been made better than new. When I say better than new, it is mainly due to the fact it has had a very high-dollar repaint applied and everything has been freshened up.

I knew the brother that passed away quite well, since he was heavily involved with GTOs and even wrote a very detailed book on GTOs that is still sold today. He also had a GTO and was a very meticulous individual. His name was Eric White. The book he wrote years ago was titled, “GTOAA of America Pontiac GTO, GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide.”

I will give a copy of Eric’s GTO identification book to whoever buys this pristineGrand National. Eric was very well known in the GTO world at the national level. I would see him every year at the National events during the 1990s. As a matter of fact, we discussed his new book and what he needed it to say since he was using GM logos, etc.

The Grand National is now in his brother’s hand, Kirk White, in Florida. They have every single document with this car since it was new. Plus, they even have the original Window Sticker. They also have every single repair receipt. Over $12,000 was spent on the repaint and to freshening up this car.

It still smells new! A smell that no company as of yet has ever duplicated. If they did, Corvette owners would line up to buy it!

The Grand National has almost every single option. The actual mileage is under 23,000 original miles. The car is 99% stock with the one exception being an aftermarket alarm system.

It has the stock powermaster brake system with the upgraded Cardone brake bowl. The car has used seat covers, which have protected the original seats. According to Kirk, he doesn’t believe anyone has ever sat in the back seat of this car.

This is a Kirban-quality car based in my numerous emails with Kirk and the fact I knew his brother from our mutual GTO connection for many years.

The new lowered price is $29,900. Keep in mind, receipts come with the car and the repaint totaled over $12,000. The repaint was only done because the car had such a poor paint job from the factory as many of them did.

If you are not able to see the Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the website. URGENT NEED FOR CORRECT STEERING WHEEL CORES -

We have an urgent need for correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores that are not bent. They can have minor rust on the spokes but cannot be pitted. If you owe us a steering wheel core, please send it in to get your core deposit back.

In order to continue this service, we have had to raise the core price. Without cores, owners can’t get a redone leather-wrapped steering wheel. Help us continue this needed service. We now issue a Letter of Credit for $100, if you have a correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel core.

EMAILS TO KIRBAN PERFORMANCE -

NOTE - If you email us and do NOT get a timely reply, be sure to check your “SPAM” folder. Some emails do not go thru.

If you need to email us, use - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

When adding something electrical, whenever possible try and make it plug in. It’s never a good move to cut any of the factory wire harnesses for any reason.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

CUSTOMIZED BUICK TAILLIGHT LED WALL DISPLAY -
CHROME EDGE OR PLAIN

During one of my many trips to various junkyards, this idea recently came to me. It’s a cool way to offer an actual original Buick part that you can personalize in the section for a license plate.

Some of you probably save you old license plates or mementos from a previous car. Now you can mount your old license plate or logo plate in this unique wall display. Better yet, you can insert a picture of you and your pride and joy in that space (see photos.) The ideas are endless.

We purchase original taillight assemblies from used Buick Regal or Century models. Both taillight assemblies are vintage early 2000 models. These are not easy to find in perfect condition.

Each taillight assembly is pre-wired with 6 LED bulbs and a 9 volt battery with a switch. Hanging hardware is attached and the display comes ready to hang on the wall. You can light it up in your garage or work shop.

Each taillight assembly has been polished and cleaned. Display piece measures approximately 38" wide and weighs about 5 lbs.

We offer two versions. The version with the chrome edge (#KE-018) is from a Buick Century model. The plain version shown without the chrome edge (#KE-019) is from a Buick Regal.

NOTE- Some assemblies may have the Regal model or Century emblem still on the surface. It can easily be removed, since it is merely stuck on.

Our photos show both versions and 4 different ideas on what to put in the section where the license plate would normally go.

Here is a unique way to have something that you can personalize to your liking, and know that it is not something that has been mass produced since it is made from an original Buick part.
The top photo shows the wall display lit. The lower photos show ideas on how the license plate area can be personalized with a license plate or photo.

Our second photo shows the wall displays without any insert.

NOTE - You may also be interested in this related item - #KE-016 Custom-made Buick Turbo Regal Valve Cover Desk Lamp.

Bag 1A & 1 - A set of bolts and screws that secure the fenders to the inner fenders.
Bag 2 - The set of bolts that secure the radiator top plate support to the radiator.
Bag 3 - The battery hold-down bolt.
Bag 4 - The core support plate bolts.
Bag 5 - The hood latch at the core support bolts.
Bag 6 - The hood latch on the hood bolts.
Bag 7 - The hood shock at the hood bolts.
Bag 8 - The hood hinges, top and bottom bolts.
Bag 9 - The inner fender ground screws.
Bag 10 - The header panel bolts.
Bag 11 - The bolts to secure the turbo shield to the turbo for the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regals. If you own a 1984 or 1985 Turbo Regal, these bolts would not be used.

There is a total of 110 button head bolts, screws, and washers in this set - 54 button head stainless screws/bolts and 56 stainless washers.

The stainless steel washers in this set are two different sizes, so when they are installed correctly, they stay centered on the bolt. This makes a nice, even appearance.

Our photo shows the complete set and the directions that show where most of them go under the hood.

Excellent upgrade to replace rusty bolts for any under-the-hood restoration.

1984-1987 Regal (All models Including Turbo Regal) -
Drop-In Flush-mounted PIONEER AM/FM CD, AUX, MP3 player
complete with Harness and GM Flush Mount Kit

Some Turbo Regal owners may want to upgrade their radio to any of the various aftermarket radios available today.

One of our long-time customers, who owns a Turbo Regal, operates a mobile radio shop. He has made up this special kit using a brand new Pioneer DEH-150MP radio. He then pre-wires it to a special harness that will plug into the original Regal radio harness, so none of the factory wires get cut and spliced.

This Pioneer radio comes with full instructions and a remote. You must re-use the original factory brackets that attaches to the sides of the mounting bezel. The main photo shows the factory Regal brackets on the Pioneer radio. The radio does NOT come with those brackets. That photo shows the original radio brackets that you need to re-use from your stock radio to make this new mounting kit fit flush in the radio bezel opening. We do NOT include these brackets.

You simply attach the original radio brackets to the side of the kit. It comes with the proper hardware to secure the factory brackets to the outer radio bezel.

You can also buy the GM Flush Mount Kit by itself, part #7802. Then you can buy any aftermarket radio and use that mounting kit to have a flush mounted radio in your Regal. Most mounting kits do not use the factory brackets nor does it allow the radio to sit flush in the dash opening.

Another excellent replacement for any interior restoration.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
