Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 08-20-2014

I FINALLY SAW ONE IN A JUNKYARD -

I finally saw one in a junkyard. As many of my readers know, almost every week I go to various You Pull It Yards and salvage yards.

Salvage yards are ones that don’t let you remove any parts, but may let you explore their inventory so you can tell them what you want.

Three of the You Pull It Yards I hit have between 6,000 and 10,000 cars and trucks in inventory. (This provides great weekly exercise for me!) In all the trips I have made, I have spotted several 442 models, Monte Carlo SS models, even a Monte Carlo Areo coupe, I evan spotted a few Yugos. But never once a Turbo Regal - let alone a real Grand National until last week.

I was at this one yard (not a You Pull It Yard) and the owner showed me around. He has several parts we hope to be getting in the near future. What is nice about this yard is many of the vehicles are 100% complete. It was in this yard I saw my first Grand National. The bad news it was stripped of everything that had any value. In the one photo you can probably see it was converted to vacuum brakes at some point. In our first photo, we show 4 different views of the Grand National I found in one of the salvage yard.

PHOTO 1 - Here are four views of what remains of a T-Top Grand National. I think there are about 3 parts that I want the yard owner is going to remove for me. Notice the number of holes in the front crossmember where the engine would be. GM must have pre-drilled the crossmembers for all the various G-body models and engine combinations in advance.

That reminds me of a story of a Grand National that I almost got burned on.

ONE GRAND NATIONAL I ALMOST GOT BURNED ON -

When you buy over 300-plus 1986-1987 Turbo Regals like I have, the odds are you will get burned or nearly burned on a few of them. This is especially true when you are buying muscle cars, such as the Turbo Regals. Here is a story on one that I almost got burned on.

The car was a very nice repainted solid roof Grand National. It was located in Maryland, which was a simple one-day trip for me to make. In every case, I already have a check made out from the dealership for the car. So, if I need wiggle room the seller must pay me the difference.

I get there in the late afternoon and as is always the case I take the car for a quick test drive around the neighborhood. The paint looked like it was almost six months old. The car drove fine, but when I made right hand turns, I could hear one of the front tires rubbing on the inner plastic fender. When I made left hand turns, I heard no noise at all. I thought that was weird and checked to see if the tires were both the same size. I saw nothing. I still was concerned. Normally I hand the check over prior to putting the car on my trailer. This time I did not, since I was still unsure I was going to buy the car.

I drove the Grand National up on the trailer. So, now the car was sitting higher and closer to eye level, so I could examine it further. The one front wheel, at least to my eye, looked like it was sitting further forward than the other side. I still was not sure what the problem was, but soon spotted another area of concern.

If you trailer a lot of the same cars, you probably have special hooks like I have that lock into the slots on a GM frame. Every Turbo Buick I have picked up has these slots on the side of the front frame rails.

Guess what - this car had no slotted holes on either side of the front frame rails. I had never seen this before. At this point, I told the owner what I had discovered and asked him did he ever have a friend or his wife follow him when he drove his Grand National. He said he did not. I said I may be wrong, but I don’t think this car tracks straight going down the highway or you constantly have to be steering the car. I then told him about my discovery about not seeing the usual slots in the frame rails where I normally put my tie down hooks.

He said he had bought the car a while ago from a car dealer. I told him what I had found and that I was not going to buy his car. He tried to reduce the price so I would buy it. I said I can’t because the problem this car has is not something that I think can easily be solved nor could I sell it to one of my customers knowing what I know now.

I also told him he may have some recourse since he bought it from a dealer, if it can be proven something is up with the frame. I suggested he take the car to a body shop that had a frame rack to determine exactly what the problem(s) was. This was one time that I saw the issue beforehand and avoided getting burned on a deal.

Over the years, I did get burned on at least 3 other examples, which out of 300-plus I figure is not bad. High miles has never bothered me as I have had some remarkable cars with high miles. It’s more about the care the car has received, rather than the miles.

Of course now that the cars are a lot older than when I was buying them, you have to be particularly careful and hope you don’t miss anything when you check a car you’re consider buying. Nobody likes to get taken on a deal.

Granted, at the low end you expect problems to arise almost instantly but at the higher price range you need to be careful before forking over your money.

VERY UNUSUAL SIGHT TO SEE -

This past weekend I was at this You Pull It Yard that has over 6,000 vehicles. It is located in the heart of Amish farm country. It is one of the best laid out You Pull It Yards I go to.

PHOTO 3 - This photo shows an Amish buggy with the horse tied to a tree in the parking lot of this large You Pull It Yard. I thought this was quite unusual to see at a junkyard, since the Amish in this area all used horse and buggy to get around. Maybe one of the younger Amish kids has a car hidden from his parents and needed a few parts? A trick I did when I was younger. I can’t remember how old I was, but at some point I was punished and was not allowed to buy any cars. I still bought one and hid it at my buddy’s house and simply rode my bike to his house and then drove my car.

PHOTO 4 - This photo shows an unusual stick-on visor mirror I came across in one of the salvage yards. It has the GM logo in the top left hand corner. The mirror measures 7 inches long by 3-¼ inches tall. I don’t believe the stick-on mirrors had the GM logo on them in our cars, According to the 1987 Buick Price Directory, the stick-on visor mirror was a mere $7 option and the lighted visor mirror was a $58 option. At $7 it was the cheapest option you could order for the 1987 Turbo Regal! The logo may be difficult to see in the photo.

DODGE HAS STEPPED UP THEIR GAME -

Dodge has stepped up their game by creating the world’s fastest sedan. They called it the Charger Hellcat using the same drivetrain that they put in the Challenger Hellcat. This gives them another notch on their belt. It was clocked at 3.7 seconds 0-60 and a flat 11 seconds in the quarter mile in street trim and street tires, certified by Hot Rod Association. This is .02 seconds quicker than the Challenger, even though the Charger is 100 pounds heavier. As for top speed, it will run up to 204 mph.

I wonder how long before a few police departments order up the police package Charger and specify the Hellcat power train? The late-model Chargers are now used by various police departments. The estimated selling price is about $65,000.

If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL HARDTOP - FOR SALE -

Recently a 1987 Grand National appeared in our local area Craigs list. In the description, the seller mentioned he bought it from us back in the year 2000. I called him about his car. Below is his ad and answer to an email I sent him.

In researching it, I discovered it was the fifth car we sold back in 2000 of the 44 we sold that year. Only two others were cheaper than this one. I gave him a stack of records with the car, which was a one owner. He has driven it less than 5,000 miles in the 14 years he has owned it. See his email to me below.

The car still runs out very good and the transmission shifts nice and firm. It does need a headliner and a heater core, since he bypassed the heater core due to it starting to leak. He has the car advertised for more on Craigs List. Since this was one of our cars, it will have the front braces done and the missing body bushings done. The Grand National is fairly priced at $9,995. You can email me - [email protected], if you are interested in this car. The car is located about 35 minutes from our shop location.

Here is a copy of the ad I spotted on a local Craigs list for the 1987 Grand National. On Craigs list the car is priced higher. I then emailed him and printed his response after his ad below.

CRAIGS LIST AD - For Sale: 1987 Buick Grand National. I am the second owner and purchased the car 14 years ago through Dennis Kirban. Dennis is legendary in this area for selling original GNs and GTOs.

The original owner was a 70-year-old man from Virginia who used the GN as his personal company car (he owned the business). I have a pile of receipts about 1/2" thick from the original owner who was absolutely meticulous about having the car serviced. The car is unmolested and has always been adult owned, garage kept and never abused. Having said this, the car was driven and has 225K miles on the all-original drive-train. The car still runs awesome...you'd swear that it has 25K miles on it.

I've put less than 5K miles on it in the last 14 years...less than 100 miles on it in the last few years! Every few months I pull it out of the garage, dust it off, take it for a quick spin and put it away. It starts right up, drives nice and shifts firm. It has the typical oil leakage from the rear main seal and some seepage from the PCV valve grommet so it will smoke a bit from under the hood when it sits for a while and you just start it up. Once the oil seepage burns off, it's fine. It never leaked enough for me to worry about repairing the leaks...No oil burning from the exhaust and the engine runs great with tons of power! I anticipated restoring the car one day, but 3 kids later it's still a toy in the garage that I barely get to drive.

Body is in great condition...very little rust and the original paint still shines nice. If you know GNs, you know that the factory paint always sucked, so there is some of the typical lacquer cracking on the top surfaces. No accidents or paint work! For 27-year-old paint, it still cleans up nice and looks very presentable.

Power steering, power brakes, cruise control, rear defogger, factory anti-theft system, tilt steering, cold A/C (yes it's still the original R-12 system). NO T-TOPS or moonroof! The original headliner is sagging and needs to be replaced...I stapled it up with a staple gun in a couple spots...just to keep it up...again just trying to be very open about the condition. Non-smoker and no pet hair!

The front seats have always been covered since I've owned it in order to protect them...Kirban used to sell custom embroidered black and grey seat covers that slipped over the original seats...these have been on the seats for 14 years and are still in great shape. The original seats were in great shape when the covers were installed. The back seats and rugs are in great shape. There's a little bit of wear on the top of the door panels where your arm would rest if you had the window open, but they are still very presentable...no holes or anything like that. The leather on the steering wheel is still in excellent shape! Dash is in excellent shape, no cracks, no fading and all lights and gages work as they should.

Car has the original GN Chrome Steel Wheels with all the center caps and BF Goodrich White Letter Tires! There's a little surface rust on the wheels, but they clean up nicely. Old School!

The car is almost 100% original with the following exceptions:
- Kirban 140 MPH speedometer...the originals were 85 MPH units (a joke)...I still have the original 85MPH unit somewhere in the attic I believe.
- Kirban console gage holder with an oil pressure and temp gage in it...nothing cut up!
- Pioneer CD player...I have the original stereo and nothing was cut to install the radio. Still has the original power antenna and it works fine!
- Kirban designed oil breather for the valve cover...the originals used to leak so this one is an improved design.

Otherwise the car is all stock, un-abused and unmolested. Jump-in, turn the key and it starts right up. Cruise the car as is or you have an absolutely solid platform for a full restoration. Most of the GNs out there are either mega-buck cars, rust buckets or racecars that have been cut up and flogged...an original fully functional non-rusty car is hard to find.

Clean PA antique title and Antique tags...cheap to insure and doesn't require PA inspection.

About 5 years ago I started to smell a little antifreeze and get a little fogging of the windshield...indications of leakage in the heater core...so I bypassed the heater core to prevent any coolant leakage onto the rugs. As I never drive the car in the winter, I really didn't care about no heat...so the heater core will need to be replaced. Everything else works and the car can be driven anywhere! The battery is brand new...I just replaced it.

Below is his answer to my email about the Grand National:

It's great to hear from you...I didn't realize that you were still in the GN/GTO business. Do you have a website? My history with you goes back to the pre-internet days when you were still publishing the newsletter and mailing it out...I had a subscription and used to get the newsletter in the mail.

I bought my GN from you on 3/3/2000...the original owner was a guy named Sam...he owned a company in Maryland and the GN was his company car. The GN had 221,500 miles on it when I bought it. He traded it to you on a 17K-mile GN that you were selling at the time. The mileage on my GN was high because the story was that he owned a home in Virginia Beach and used to drive the GN back and forth between his MD shop and his VA home every week. My GN still runs great and it is virtually the same as it was when I bought it 14 years ago...I changed the radio and added your 140 MPH speedo, which I bought when I picked up the car. I put on your heavy canvas seat covers to protect the seats...they haven't been off since I bought the car. I did replace the steering wheel with a nice one that I found cheap at Carlisle...I remember at the time you had just started offering a steering wheel restoration service. I always wanted to buy a set of your original replacement wheels, but never got around to it and I remember your inventory was starting to run low at the time. I've always been pretty much a purist...keeping the car as original as possible...never wanted to do any mods that couldn't be easily undone.

You sold me the GN for what at the time was a song $4,395! Best buy I ever made! I figured that I'd have to restore the GN sooner or later at that mileage... but it was like the energizer bunny... it just kept running great and I barely had to put any money into it over the years. I've had a lot of fun with the car... even drove it to a couple of the GN events that you hosted years ago... probably been more than 10 years ago by now! It still sounds great and "yipes 'em up" between gears. Sam was crazy meticulous with the maintenance before I bought it...you gave me a ton of service records with it when I bought it...he used to change all of the fluids (oil, tranny, rear) on a very regular basis.

Although the paint is original and not perfect, it still turns heads! As you can see, I've only put a few thousand miles on it since I owned it... was always a little timid about breaking something that I couldn't afford to replace. I baby my GN and drive my Mustang GT like I stole it... absolutely no comparison from an acceleration perspective... I've never driven anything that accelerates like a GN once the turbo kicks in!

I had been to your Sugar Bottom Road home several times... I remember standing in that multiple car garage that you had, foaming at the mouth over the low-mileage GNs that you always seemed to find. I always wanted to buy one of those, but my GN was all my budget would support (some things don't change!) Maybe someday. But I have to believe that unmolested cars are almost impossible to find for less than $20K these days. Rusted out remnants of old GNs still seem to bring decent money. I've listed mine for what I think is a pretty high price... I really don't want to sell it but my wife constantly bugs me about not using it.

I let my son drive it to school for the last day of high school... he said he wanted to be the coolest kid in school for a day and he was!

In my view, the GNs are still one of the most special cars ever made...as you used to say...Going Fast with Class! If I sell it, I'll be sad, but I also know that the likelihood that I'll ever put the bucks into it that it deserves is not high... My first son started college this year, and there are two more behind him, so disposable income will be in short supply for the next 10+ years.

Based on your experience, what's the market rate for a GN like mine... I assume you still deal primarily with unmolested cars?

Thanks, Paul

This car can be bought for $9,995. His ad on Craigs list has it priced higher, but I told him I felt this is a more realistic price. If you are interested, contact me - [email protected] - for more information. The big thing is it’s only a two-owner car that has had exceptional maintenance over the years.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
DUAL FAN CONVERSION KIT and
CUSTOM-MADE PLUG-AND-PLAY HARNESS

We offer three options to upgrade the factory single electric fan on a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal to a dual fan format. Each fan has a 12" diameter sweep. There are no clearance issues between the radiator and the factory intercooler shroud. The unit is 3-1/2" deep. The overall width of the unit is 26" and the length is 16".

The complete kit includes a brand new Intrepid dual fan and a custom-made plug-and-play harness. This harness is specific to the Intrepid dual fan.

One of the beneficial upgrades to make to provide better cooling is to install a dual fan set up to replace the 25+-year-old single electric fan. The factory Buick fan relay cannot safely sustain the full load of dual electric fans. That is why it’s advisable to install a supplemental relay system.

This custom-made plug-and-play harness is specially designed to make the conversion easy. This plug-and-play harness consists of two sealed relays. The relays are both energized by the factory fan relay in your car, reducing the circuit load on the factory relay and permitting full coolant fan control without the risk of overload. The fans are both powered at high speed when cooling is commanded via factory low speed coolant fan control through the ECM. This system assures proper load through the relays with proper power distribution.

This kit plugs into the factory fan connector, unlike other harnesses that require you to cut off the factory connector. The factory connector is entirely reliable and should not be cut.

The plug-and-play harness is made in the U.S.A. and comes with easy-to-follow directions with photos.

We offer 3 options. The first option is for the entire conversion kit, which includes a new Dodge Intrepid dual fan kit and the special custom-made plug-and-play harness. The second option is for the dual fan only. The last option is just for the custom-made plug-and-play harness.

NOTE - We recommend installation be done by a qualified mechanic.

IMPORTANT NOTE - You have to custom make brackets to mount the dual fan housing so you can secure this to the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal radiator core support at the top and bottom. You also have to cut off the original mounting tabs on the side of this dual fan housing since they do not get used. There is a link on the Turbo Buick forum with photos that shows what you have to do. Basically you have to cut off the 2 plastic mounting tabs on both sides of the housing and fabricate some small piece of angle iron to secure it to the original top brackets and the bracket at the bottom of the core support.

This dual fan set up is for a Dodge Intrepid and is the one that most 1986-1987 Turbo Regal owners have used for this modification. It is also the one that will plug into the custom-made plug-and-play harness we offer. Be sure to click on the link below so you fully understand what you need to do to modify the dual fan housing to attach to the radiator bracket and core support.

NOTE - Here is a link to the Turbo Buick Forum. It explains what you have to do to mount the Dual Fan Conversion Kit in the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/threads/ramchargers-fans-intrepid-fans-those-whove-done-it-please-chime-in.380509/

BRAKE CONVERSION KITS -

1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CONVERSION VACUUM BRAKE BOOSTER KIT with VACUUM BRAKE PEDAL

This is another option to consider if you have a fairly stock 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal and want to switch from your original powermaster brake system. This kit comes complete with everything you need as shown. This unit comes with a REBUILT Cardone brake booster and a BRAND new master cylinder. The booster has a 9" diameter. The master cylinder and vacuum booster in this kit is exactly what GM used in 1986-1987 on a non-Turbo Regal application.

There are no clearance issues with this unit and the stock remote power steering reservoir. It also comes with our new vacuum block with gasket and hardware. It has the vacuum port similar to what GM used on the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. We also include 2 feet of vacuum hose and our new reproduction gasket to firewall.

The kit also includes a used correct Buick Regal vacuum brake pedal assembly. This pedal has the correct size pin and in the correct location so you can hook up the rod from the vacuum booster with no interference. You would get a Letter of Credit for $25 if you send us your powermaster brake pedal that you have removed and replaced with our vacuum pedal assembly.

Depending on our current core supply, we may be interested in your original powermaster brake unit for a Letter of Credit.

This booster uses the same factory holes in the firewall as the powermaster. The rod on this brake booster will only work with the vacuum pedal assembly that comes with this kit.

Since nothing gets cut or drilled related to the original powermaster, the original powermaster can be re-used should you want to convert back to the factory set up at a later date.

We highly recommend installation be done by a qualified mechanic, since you have to properly bleed the brakes and making sure the system is operating properly under all conditions.

Remember, your best option is always to stay with the factory GM powermaster brake system. This unit is only to be used with a stock or a fairly stock Turbo Regal. A modified engine or one with a performance cam would cause vacuum levels to be greatly reduced, which would could cause braking problems. One possible solution would be to purchase from Summit or Jegs an additional vacuum canister to retain proper vacuum levels.

When purchasing this part you may also want to purchase Part #7218 Stainless Braided Brake Hoses as these will improve the stopping ability.

For our rebuilt powermaster brake unit, See our Part # 7021 - 1985-1987 Turbo Regal - Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.

However, if you have a STOCK engine, there is adequate vacuum to switch over to a vacuum brake system. We have another option: Our Part #7044 - Brand New Complete Vacuum Brake Booster Kit. This kit retains the original brake pedal because the booster has a different rod. Also both the master cylinder and brake booster are brand new. This is the major difference.

NOTE - A vacuum brake system is NOT recommended for a Turbo Regal with a modified engine or one with a performance cam because vacuum levels are greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems.

NOTE - Be sure to check out the other options we offer for converting the Turbo Regal brake system - Part #7044 Brand New Complete Vacuum Brake Booster Kit that works off the existing turbo brake pedal, Part #7617 Hydro-Boost Conversion Kit, or #7618 HYDRATECH Hydro-Boost System conversion.

NOTE - If you send us your original powermaster brake pedal, you will receive a Letter of Credit for $25. Depending on our current core supply, we may be interested in your original powermaster brake unit for a Letter of Credit.

NOTE - We recommend installation be done by a qualified auto mechanic.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

Mark your calendar - October 4th, 2014 for our Fall Octoberfest Open House. Always a good time and a great prepared luncheon. We fully expect to have Spoolfool fillers on hand that can be ordered in advance for pick up. Watch for more updates.
