Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 08-17-2016 -

IT’S A TOUGH DECISION FOR ME TO MAKE -

The tough decision for me to make is which Buick event to attend in mid-September. Unfortunately, both the GS Nationals and East Coast Regionals fall on the same weekend.

I’ve attended every GS National event beginning in 1988.

After much thought, I have decided to go to the East Coast Buick Regionals held at Cecil County, Maryland. I have attended this event in years past. It’s only a few hour’s drive from my location, plus my son and his family has an apartment in Northeast Maryland that they use when they go boating every weekend.

It’s unfortunate that both Buick events fall on the same weekend. I am sure many of my readers will have the same tough choice to make.

With that said, we will be accepting cores for Letters of Credit at the East Coast Buick Regionals. This includes correct 1986-1987 mass air flow sensors, steering wheel cores, and we could also use some powermaster cores as long as they are complete.

1986 AND 1987 REPRODUCTION TURBO REGAL WINDOW STICKERS -

Reproducing the 1986 and 19087 Turbo Regal Window Stickers is a major project that we are working on for our customers.

Most Turbo Regal owners will agree that the window sticker is the most sought document for your car to have.

I know from the days of buying and selling Turbo Regals, I always asked for all the paperwork the seller had. I was fortunate back then as many of the cars I was buying were one owners or I bought the car from owners that had a real passion for the cars, so they had all the paperwork.

If you have an original Window Stickers that is badly faded or torn, we will be able to make those perfect and exactly like your original.

ECS Automotive Concepts has already purchased a large supply of the correct original paper. While he can make Window Stickers perfect looking, including the font style, there is no way he can make the information exact unless you the owner can supply every bit of the correct information.

The toughest part of the puzzle for owners that don’t have the original Window Sticker is finding out who the original selling dealership was. Not only that but that dealership had specific codes associated with that particular dealership that appeared on the Window Sticker. Our plan is to insert a dealership that we have all the codes for. (We have a list of about 20 GM dealerships throughout the country along with the correct codes.)

ECS Automotive Concepts has the correct font style. They also have the correct paper in stock.

We know the correct GM part number for both the 1986 and the 1987 Window Stickers. This part number appears in very small print in the bottom right corner of the Window Sticker. They will be able to print the wording on the back of the Window Sticker about removing the Window Sticker from the car. These are all things that other reproductions have lacked in the past.

Another thing that most of you probably don’t realize is the fact the printing of the Window Sticker went to the edges of the paper. Also under the options block, the printing was very close to the outline. This is something that is not done with a common printer. This is very evident in the following photos as we picture the reproduction Window Sticker we had done years ago, my original Window Sticker, and the ECS Automotive Concepts reproduction Window Sticker that they did for me.

PHOTO 1 - This photo shows 3 Window Stickers…

On the right is a reproduction of the Window Sticker for our 1987 Turbo-T, which was done several years ago by the company that used to do them for us. It does not have the GM part #22535271 in the right corner. This GM number is for a 1987 GM Window Sticker and appears on the original Window Sticker. All the printing and borders do not go out the edge of the paper, like the original Window Sticker. It is also about a ½ inch wider and taller than the original Window Sticker. It does not have any words on the back about “TO REMOVE: WET LABEL WITH SPONGE.” These are all critical parts to make a correct looking Window Sticker.

The middle one is a reproduction of the Window Sticker for our 1987 Turbo-T, that was done by ECS Automotive Concepts, the same company that does the door jamb VIN decals we have been marketing. The major visual difference is you can see how the outlines are almost at the very edge of the paper. What may be hard to detect in the photo is the perforations on both sides of the sheet. Notice the spacing of each option code related to the outline compared to the one in the first photo. Although not pictured, it does have the wording “TO REMOVE: WET LABEL WITH SPONGE” in the exact style, size and positioned as it appeared on the original Window Sticker. No other company does this!

The one on the right is my original Window Sticker for our 1987 Turbo-T. The only visual difference between this original and the middle one is the age or patina look of the paper. We just can’t duplicate 30 years of age on the paper and still be able to sell it for under $100!

PHOTO 2 - This photo shows a close up of the previous Window Sticker we used to have done on the left and the new ECS reproduction Window Sticker is on the right.

PHOTO 3 - This photo shows a close up of the new ECS reproduction Window Sticker is on the right and my original Window Sticker on the right.

With all that being said, you need to gather up all the information you can related to your 1986 or 1987 Turbo Regal.

We have the information for all the codes related to the options and the prices of the options. However, in the Price Directories the wording for the options is different than the wording Buick used for the Window Stickers. ECS Automotive Concepts does not have all the correct wording for every single option Buick had for those years. Again, this is why I say we can’t make the wording exact. ECS Automotive Concepts is not set up to commit hours of time to do a single Window Sticker.

You as the owner of the car will be able to determine the options on your car based on a visual inspection and cross reference it to the SPID label on the inside trunk lid.

Adding to the confusion is prior to sometime in early July 1987 all the Grand Nationals were titled as Regal 2 DR COUPES with the option code WE2 for Grand National. After July 1987 the decision came down to make an additional 10,000 Grand Nationals to close out the year 1987. Those Grand Nationals were titled as Grand Nationals, so the WE code was not listed as an option.

This is something we are aware of. You as a Grand National owner can determine your built date by looking at the door jamb VIN code, which gives the month and year of production. That is a key factor we would need to know if you have a 1987 Grand National so we can correctly determine how your car was titled on the Window Sticker. Prior to July 1987 Grand National was listed as an option with the code WE2.

Here is another example of just how confusing creating an accurate Window Sticker can be. There is an option listed as VK3. VK3 is for the front license plate bracket. It may not be on your car now but it may be listed on your SPID label. It is not listed in the Price Directory as an option. It shows up on the Window Sticker as no charge on the cars that got this option. Not every Turbo Regal got VK3.

For example - my 1987 Turbo-T does not list it on the SPID label. This is understandable as the car was sold originally in western Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania does not have front license plates. Only some states require front license plates. Confused? I have copies of about 20 GNX SPID labels and VK3 shows up on all of them. Stands to reason the GNXs that were sold in Pennsylvania would not need a front license plate bracket.

So, you can see offering a reproduction Window Sticker for your Turbo Regal is not a simple project. If it was, someone smarter than me would have marketed it by now with GMs approval of course.

ECS Automotive Concepts and our company want to make a reproduction Window Sticker as close to exact as we can. It depends on how accurate the information is that you as the owner provide us to work with.

The layout format and font style will be a perfect match to the original, however the descriptions may not be 100% the exact wording GM used.

GNX SPID LABELS -

To date we now have about 25 GNX SPID labels. All the labels I have samples of are all the same. All have 87 total codes. They have six rows of 13 plus one row of 9. The critical code is T2L, which is for the GNX option.

None of them list a code for the bumper reinforcement braces, whether it is steel or aluminum.

Also for the rear brake drums they all list code J41, which is for steel drums.

What I can’t confirm is did all the GNXs have aluminum brake drums? If so, why did they get the J41 code for steel drums and not J42 for aluminum rear brake drums. With the GNX being the halo car for Buick, did they all get the aluminum bumper supports? I would think they all got the lightest parts possible to achieve the best 0-60 times for the magazines. Plus, aluminum looks better since steel rusts almost instantly. Only way to really answer these questions is to have a dozen GNXs at one event and visually check each one. One customer mentioned it may be a package under the T2L code. This could be the answer. In other words, it would be included under the T2L code.

So if you own a real GNX, email me and tell me what rear drums are on your GNX? Also what bumper supports are on your GNX? Are they steel or aluminum?

PHOTO 4 - This photo shows a typical GNX SPID label. We have deleted the VIN number. You can see on the last line the J41 code, which stands for steel rear drums. Also the SPID label has no codes referring to the bumper supports under the V letter category. In case you’re wondering, the codes B33 and B34 are for the factory carpeted floor mats. We are the only source that sells the correct pattern for those factory installed floor mats. On the GM accessory mats, the driver’s side is slotted on both sides of the mat. You can see the WE code for the Grand National package.

LOOKING FOR A BIG TIME FORD COLLECTOR UPDATE -

We have several interested parties that have bids on the cars and parts. I am confident that a decision will be made before the week’s end on the various parts and cars. The backyard buddy and air compressor have been sold to one of our customers. The sale of the cars and parts should be completed by the end of this week.

CHECK OUT THE DEVOTION THIS GUY HAD FOR CAR MODELS -
Here’s a link to an interesting news clip on a guy that left his home with 30,000 car models and cars to his church.

GRAND NATIONAL CORRECT METRIC LUG NUTS -

Finally, our supplier expects to ship us the correct 1986-1987 Grand National lug nuts in the next 10 days. We received a small partial order on hand to fill some of our back orders.

BREAKING NEWS - 1984-1987 TURBO REGAL RADIO BRACKETS UPDATE-

As you read this, we should have the radio brackets in stock. The price is $19.95 per set, part #7719. You do need to have the factory studs and nuts attached to the radio for these brackets to work. They are made in aluminum, so the brackets will not rust. It may not be on our website as of yet.

IMPORTANT NEWS ON REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM DRUMS -

I am still waiting for word from Cardone as to when I can expect to have more aluminum brake drums available. If you wish a set from the next shipment, contact our office - 215-766-1611 x 0. We would not charge your credit card until we have them in stock. The price is $234.95 plus shipping.

DISTURBING NEWS –

It seems the city of Chicago is making the news almost weekly. One day alone 19 people were shot, 9 of them fatally. To date this year Chicago has had 426 homicides, far more than the city of New York, which has three times more population.

One of the few bright spots in Chicago is the Chicago Cubs baseball team that is running away with their division. Actually they currently have the best record among all the division leaders. Maybe that will have a positive effect on the city!

THIS IS BAFFLING TO ME -

There is a university in New Jersey that according to a news article, has collected five million dollars in parking tickets from its students in a space of just two years! This is not a misprint! This tells you one of two things. There is a serious lack of enough parking for students. Or, they have stumbled on another method to make some serious money. Remember, this is $5,000,000 in just parking tickets in a space of just two years. The amount seems really high when you consider the fact college is not attended 12 months every year. I doubt this shows up on the brochures about the benefits to attend this University!

CORES NEEDED -

Here is the information on our credits for cores.

We currently need original good 1986-1987 AC Delco mass air flow sensors. We allow $40 Letter of Credit for each correct AC Delco core. See photo 2 in 7-13-2016 Inner Circle to determine if you have the proper mass air flow sensor we need.

URGENT NEED - TURBO CORES must be the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal stock turbo. They must be complete. We will issue you a $100 Letter of Credit for each acceptable core.

If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number.

TECH CALLS -

If you need technical information, it’s best to email - [email protected] rather than call us.
We will do our best to answer any technical questions within 24 hours.

CARS FOR SALE -

From time to time, whenever we spot an unusual or an exceptional car or truck for sale, or one we have for sale, we will put a blurb in our weekly Inner Circle. Also, any cars that our customers have for sale will be featured here and you can see their car with photos on our website. In this category, we will run the descriptions for two-to-three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.

CAMARO SS 2001 CONVERTIBLE FOR SALE -

This 2001 Camaro SS convertible is a mint example has just 12,000 original miles on it. The Camaro SS has a silver exterior with a black interior and automatic transmission. The car is absolutely mint inside and out.

The seller has it listed for $15,500 however, I talked to the seller and it can be bought for $14,900. This basically works out at little bit more than $1 per mile driven. This 2001 Camaro SS convertible is located within 3 miles of my office. For more information, contact me direct - [email protected]

I can provide photos and more information. A 15-year-old car with basically one year’s worth of miles driven on it.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

TIP - REAR BUMPER -

Here is a tip from Ken out of Ohio. He had a problem with his rear bumper. It kept gouging the top corners of the rear filler panels. This would happen on both sides.

It turns out it was being caused by not having the #7 lower body bushing in his frame, so when his car would hit a bump, the body would flex causing the bumper to hit the rear fillers. Once those lower bushings were installed, the issue was corrected!

As I have stated for many years, for whatever reason the Turbo Buicks did not receive 4 of the lower body bushings. Perhaps more confusing is many of them did not get a total of 6 of the lower body bushings. I know this from experience as every Turbo Regal we bought and sold (over 300) we would install all the missing bushings whether it was 4 or 6. Actually the ones at the very back, which would be #7 are not hard to do as rust is not usually a factor in that area. The other ones close to the rear axle are the ones that can cause a problem, if the cage nut breaks lose when you are trying to remove the bolt.

TIP - CLEANING & POLISHING PRODUCTS -

Here is a tip from me. We all have our favorite cleaning and polishing products that we use to detail our cars.

I use mostly the well-known brands with one of my favorites being Surf City products. I have tried a handful of different brands used to remove tar, bugs and tree sap with poor results. Without naming different brands, the only one I found that is most effective, especially on tar or tree sap that has been on the surface for a while, is made by Stoner called “Bug and Tarminator.” It comes in a 10-ounce spray can. So, if you are not satisfied with the product you are currently using, give the Stoner brand a try.

SPEAKING OF TIPS -

Few years back I wrote two very useful books, part number #7027 and #7088. The books are entitled Tips, Trivia, and Sources Volume 1 and 2. Volume 1 runs 60 pages and is $14.95 and Volume 2 runs 40 pages and cost $10.95. I wrote these books after buying and selling over 250 Turbo Regals. There is a wealth of good useful information in both of these books. They show you all the tricks and ideas that I learned from buying and selling 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regals.

To my knowledge, these are the only specialty books like these in print. Over the years I have been asked by a major publisher to write a new book on Turbo Regals, but I have declined because I just don’t want to make a commitment and be subject to following a certain format. Also, writing a book is not an easy task especially when you have to be sure your facts are accurate.

I wrote all my books when I had a bunch of these cars sitting on our driveway. If I was unsure of something, I could simply go outside and double check my facts. In many cases, I could also referred to the thousands of photos I took of the different Turbo Regals.

I don’t claim to be an expert, but if I was given a written test, I would probably get a fairly high score with Richard Clark scoring higher than me and perhaps a few others!

I believe less than 15 Turbo Regal owners can probably remove the jack and spare and reinstall it like Buick did originally.

1978-1988 Buick Regal (All G-Body Models) -
REPRODUCTION HEADLINER SIDE MOLDING CLIPS (6) SET

This is a complete set of the 6 black plastic molding clips, which secure each of the metal side moldings (left and right) by the headliner.

We also offer part #7362, Headliner Molding Clips (8) Set, which are the clips for the front and back headliner installation. By purchasing this part #7674 and part #7362, you will have all the plastic clips you need to secure the headliner.

If you have a T-Tops Buick Regal, you will not need all 6 of these molding clips.

This is a must-have part, since many headliners are starting to sag and may need to be replaced.

Because the original unique clips are plastic, many may break or crack due to age and heat when you remove them to replace the headliner.

The original clips have already been discontinued by the major supplier for GM, since they were last used on the rear-wheel drive platform cars back in 1988.

NOTE - You may also be interested in this related part - #7362, Headliner Molding Clips (8) Set.
Another excellent replacement part for any interior restoration. Keep a set for when you have the headliner redone.

1984-1985 Turbo Regal -
BRAND NEW 120 amp ALTERNATOR
Pre-tested with Limited Lifetime Warranty

Our research has shown that very few companies offer a 100% brand new, correct-appearing alternator for the 1984-1985 Turbo Regals.

The original 1984 Turbo Regal alternator had 94 amps. It has a single pulley format with a different fan than the later Turbo Regal alternators (see upper photo.) It is possible some 1985 Turbo Regals used the 1984-style alternator as well.

If you have a 1985 Turbo Regal you need to determine if you have a 2-prong plug (shown on the left) or a 4-pin format (shown on the right.) You would also have a 6 groove pulley and a different style fan on the front.

If you have the 4-pin format, see part #7315. The one you need is part #7315 or #7316, which is a 200 amp.

Our supplier who builds all our alternators is able to modify these to produce 120 amps instead of the original 94 amps. He also uses heavy-duty diodes in his alternators. All the parts are brand new and look as close to factory original as possible. These improvements make this alternator far superior than any auto store version.

Working closely with a local source, we can assure quality control. Each alternator is hand assembled, pre-tested and comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

The pulley itself is used, but is factory original so it has the proper diameter and groove. All of the other external parts (including the housing) and internal parts are brand new. The housing on this unit does not have any factory stampings. Since each alternator is pre-tested, you can be assured it is producing a minimum of 120 amps.

The proper amps and charging is a critical function to assure the electronics are getting the proper volts to the complete electrical system. Some of you may be running additional fuel pumps and this makes this even more important.

No core is required, so you can retain the original alternator.

It’s always better to buy brand new versus used or rebuilt, especially if it’s a car you plan to keep.

While other alternators may be cheaper, ours are 100% correct looking.

An excellent replacement for any engine restoration.

NOTE - If you own a 1985 Turbo Regal, be SURE to determine if you need this #7705 2-prone alternator or the 4-pin format, part #7315 or part #7316.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
