Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 08-07-2019 –
GRAND NATIONAL LIGHTED DISPLAY SIGN –
This past weekend I attended the 56th Annual Das Awkscht Fescht Car Show at Macungie Memorial Park. It is a 3-day event and attracts a lot of different cars each day. It’s a beautiful setting for a car show with plenty of older trees on the grounds. I saw one Turbo-T, several 442 Cutlasses, and even a Monte Carlo SS on the show field.
As far as finding Turbo Regal parts, I always go by the theory that if I have never seen it before or have seldom seen it, it’s probably rare. That explains the Grand National lighted display sign I spotted and bought at the car show. The seller was a good friend of mine that I have purchased many items from in the past, including the rare Hellcat banners a few years back. I used to purchase items from his Dad back in our GTO days.
This Grand National sign lights up. It is brand new and the seller thought it is over 20 years old as it came from his Dad’s inventory. His Dad passed away a number of years ago. I can’t vouch for the age of the Grand National display, only that I can’t recall ever seeing one before.
PHOTO 1 - Shows the Grand National display sign not lit up on the left and it lit up on the right. It has an aluminum frame with 2 eye hooks at the top to hang it up and it also has 2 notched areas in the back to hang it up. It measures approximately 12 inches high by 30 inches wide by 3 inches deep. It is listed for sale under Rare Parts. Depending on your relationship with your spouse, if you buy it, you may be able to hang it in your living room!
MORE UNUSUAL BUICK TRINKETS –
From another good friend of mine at the Macungie event I bought the 2 items shown in Photo 2. One is the metal key holder for the Indianapolis 500 event with the colorful turbo logo. It is brand new with what appears to be the original Zippo box. Also, pictured in Photo 2 is this cool vinyl zipper key size bag that has the metal tri-shield logo on the front and the word “BUICK” embossed under the metal tri-shield logo. It measures approximately 3 inches by 2 inches.
PHOTO 2 – The photo to the right shows this rare Indianapolis 500 Grand National style metal key fob. The photo to the left shows this black vinyl zipper bag that could be used to hold coins or a set of keys. It is brand new. I have never seen a small case like this. See the Rare Parts section as both items are for sale.
MORE UNIQUE WRISTWATCHES –
We bought some more custom-made wristwatches. Some are new styles while retaining the same exterior wristwatch housing. Supplies are limited.
If you have an idea for a wristwatch, email me [email protected]
PHOTO 3 -The one on the far left shows the 1965 GTO rally tachometer. Next one shows the tachometer found in the 1961-1962 Corvette. The next one has the “Turbo Six Logo & Buick Motorsports” wording. Next one shows Turbo Regal steering wheel with the odometer numbers behind it. The last one shows the “GNX” logo. See the Rare Parts section where they are listed for sale and the number of each we have available.
TWO OF THE MOST UNUSUAL VEHICLES AT THE DAS AWKSCHT FESCHT CAR SHOW –
Without a doubt, the most unusual custom vehicle at this event held last Saturday at the Macungie Memorial Park can be seen in Photo 4. The timing was perfect since we recently wrote about our tow truck pedal car.
For this unusual project, the builder used an original Murray pedal car as a blueprint. He copied it almost exactly in a scale that is many times larger than the kid-size pedal car in the photo. The entire body, including the steering wheel and windshield, is made in fiberglass. The builder had no skill in working with fiberglass before he attempted this project. His background was working with metal at a machine shop.
The drive train is from a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck. A good use of an old Ford Ranger since the body of the truck had severe rust issues. As you can imagine, kids went crazy at the show when they saw this massive pedal car.
I am surprised the engine does not run hot as the front end has no grille opening. The drivetrain and the radiator are set fairly far back from the front of the vehicle.
The other unusual vehicle at the event was a 1935 Ford 5-window coupe. This was actually used on a farm for many years as a chicken coup. It was found in Woodstock, NY by the seller’s father who was an original participant at Woodstock in August 1969! It runs and drives. A unique side entrance was made in the passenger side, so the chickens could come and go on their own. The Ford coupe had an asking price of $10,499.
PHOTO 4 – We show a photo of the oversized Murray pedal car alongside an actual matching Murray pedal car that the builder used as a template. The other photos show the chicken coup 1935 Ford that had a practical use after it was retired from being on the road. You can see the small door made on the passenger’s side for the chickens to go in and out.
BREAKING NEWS 1966 CORVAIR COUPE FOR SALE –
In my travels the other day I spotted a real nice 6-cylinder, 4-speed original 1966 Corvair coupe for sale. It had less than 55,000 actual miles. It has a grey exterior with a mint black interior. The exterior had been repainted years ago. From what I was told, the car sat in a museum. This is a very nice driver quality car. It has the desirable six-cylinder engine. The car started right up and ran smooth. The price is $8,295. I do have photos. Ironically, in this issue I did an article about loser and flops and mention the Corvair. Again, less than 55,000 miles on a 53-year-old car is very low miles. For more information and photos, email me direct [email protected]

1986 T-TYPE AT RECENT MECUM AUCTION HARRISBURG, PA –
This was a black 1986 T-Type Turbo Regal, solid roof car with no console and a dark red interior. The T-Type appeared to be 100% stock with a mere 5,000 original miles. It was described as virtually brand new. The bidding struggled to get to $32,000 and it was a no sale. This information was supplied to me from Greg Davidian.
It continues to be a struggle to get good money for prime examples of the regular 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regals that are not a Grand National or a GNX. A comparable 1987 Turbo Limited or an authentic 1987 WE4 (both known limited production models) have increased in value over the regular Turbo Regals.

LOSERS AND FLOPS –
At some point most companies will produce a product or products that quickly become losers for one reason or another.
GM hit a few over the last several decades. The Corvair, Citation, Chevette, Cimarron, and the Catera all come to mind. Starting these models with the letter “C” seemed to bring GM bad luck! Two exceptions to the first letter being a “C” would be the Camaro and the Corvette. I have read the entire production run of the Corvette for 2020 with its new mid-engine design is sold out in advance. This may create adjusted market value similar to what dealers did with the limited number of GNXs in 1987.
One of the biggest flops from the 1960s came from Ford and was named for his son Edsel. It’s probably one reason no family I ever heard of have named their son Edsel. In recent years, the Edsel has become quite collectible in the Ford world. I would not take that theory to heart if you are banking on the Yugo to be a highly-sought after collectible car!
The earliest memory I have of a loser was a business called “Amway” that my Dad got involved with when I was in 11th grade. I would go almost weekly to a warehouse and bring back product for his distributors to pick up. Although my Dad really pushed the product line, it soon failed. The format just was not suited for my Dad to do as a living. As a joke, I took one of his Amway vinyl zipper bags and taped it to the ceiling as you would head down our basement with the words “Dad's Edsel!” Fortunately, my Dad had a good sense of humor and it stayed on that basement wall for many years. It wasn’t long before all of us kids started to write on the walls as you went down the basement steps in our house. When my parents were preparing the old homestead to be sold they repainted the walls leading to the basement and there went all us kid’s written memories!
Dad’s fortunes soon changed when he started to write books at age 40, two of which would hit the half million mark in sales in just a few year’s time.
Amway came back to haunt Eileen as a senior in High School. I was in Vietnam at the time. She would drive my Ford to school each day. One day she skipped the school lunch (with permission) and drove to a nearby McDonalds for lunch. On the drive back to school, the rear leaf springs on my 1950 Ford broke sending the body down on the frame in the middle of the street! The weight of carrying all those boxes of Amway SA8 detergent was just too much for my old Ford.
Hurst had a flop, which could have been a real issue had it gotten to market. Hurst made a clear acrylic ball shifter knob. The problem happened when it was installed on a worker’s car in the parking lot. The sun worked like a magnifying lens and it quickly burnt a small hole in the cloth seats from the angle of the sun! It took me years of collecting Hurst items to find one of these prototype knobs.
When the new BMW Mini Cooper first came out, I bought one off ebay. It was the supercharged version. We made parts for the car. One part I made was a chrome ring to seat around the ignition switch. My mistake was I did not start the car after I installed it. The end of the day came and I went to start the car and it would crank but would not start. I had no idea why the car refused to start. The problem was back then the car had to be serviced at a Mini Cooper dealership. I had it towed to the nearest Mini Cooper dealership. After 3 days, they figured out that it was the chrome metal ring I had attached around the ignition switch. Somehow that metal ring interfered with the chip in the key. After that, I always would start the car every time I added a new part.
Years ago, we had a 6-speed shifter made for the 1993 and up Camaros and Firebirds. I had bought a 1994 Z28 to test fit the shifter through the console opening. It worked great, zero issues. I figured it ought to be the same for the Firebird since it had the same transmission.
Again, it was a mistake on my part to assume the console opening was the same. It turns out that the Firebird console opening for the 6-speed shifter was slightly different. When you installed the Camaro 6-speed shifter in the Firebird the gaps around the console opening was not the same. Matter of fact, if a small child rested their finger on the edge of the shifter hole opening, the shifter handle could badly pinch the kids finger, depending on what gear the shifter was put in. We had to make a specific handle for the 6-speed shifter in the 1993 and up Firebird body. After that episode, I never assumed any part we got made fits other models without first actually trying them. True story.
In quick review, the important thing is to always check the part to make sure it does fit other models. Also, the successful products should outweigh the losers and the flops. As a rule, most new parts may start out being slow sellers, but generally sales will increase 6 to 9 months later as the part gets more exposure.
Of course, it didn’t help when Ralph Nader wrote a book and says the Corvair is unsafe at any speed. That catch phrase was the death stroke for the GM Corvair. Years later the government would deem the Corvair safe at any speed. Unfortunately, it was too late.
INTERESTING APARTMENT RENTAL AD IN OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER –
I never saw an ad for an apartment rental quite like this before. We recently showed some of our flower beds that we have around our house in an Inner Circle. This apartment for rent ad was advertising as an efficiency apartment on the third floor for $895 a month. Among the perks, lots of closet space, skylights, private entrance, washer, dryer, refrigerator, central air, Fios with DVR, all included in the rent. The next line in the ad caught my attention. It said, in part, you can save $95 a month if you weed our flower beds. That represents quite a savings each month! The ad does not mention how large the flower beds are, but come winter keeping the weeds out of the flower beds can’t be much of a challenge. I can’t imagine the landlord having much of an issue getting a tenant rather quickly between the perks and the deep discount for weeding a flower bed.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

IN CLOSING –
More horrible news over this past weekend. It is just hard to imagine how these tragedies keep occurring at such a rapid pace.

When we check the links, they work fine. Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
