Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 09-09-2015
PERFECT TIMING -
Perfect timing - Since we are discussing various radio options for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, I have finally located a speaker that fits and works under the upper dash panel for all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals.
This has been a difficult speaker to find since it had to be a certain size and have a slim profile in order to fit under the upper dash panel.
I had Richard Clark test it and fit it in one of his cars and he reports it works fine.
We have to make a modification for the speakers to have the proper sound for the cars that have the Concert Sound II system.
See the New Products section for more exact information and pricing.
We have some for the non-Concert Sound II systems in stock.
It takes a unique tool to get the screws out that secure the upper dash panel unless you have the windshield out of your car!
PHOTO 1 - Shows the front and back of these new 3-½ diameter speakers. You will have to modify the original terminal ends, since one of the contacts on these speakers is smaller than the terminal end on the factory harness. They come with directions, so you know which wire goes to the POSITIVE + and which wire in the harness goes to the NEGATIVE - side.
TURBO REGAL RADIO OPTIONS -
In a previous Inner Circle, we explained how GM was very clever at cutting costs by using basically the same size radio for a number of years in most of their GM line up. They accomplished this by simply using different mounting brackets to the radio, either on the sides or at the top and bottom.
PHOTO 2 - In the photo on the left we show 3 of the various side mount brackets that I have come across in my travels. The first pair shown is the correct brackets for the Regal body cars 1984-1987. You can see how similar the 3 versions are. They used the same bracket for both sides and simply flipped it over. In the photo on the right we show the other versions. The two long ones in the top of the photo are metal and this version was used across the top and bottom of the radio. The other two pictured are made in plastic. As we stated earlier, the radios for a number of years are basically the same with the difference being 12 pin or 21 pin plug, glossy face or satin black face, and color of the buttons.
UNUSUAL GM TEST GAUGE -
I recently attended “Corvettes at Carlisle,” a Corvette event that attracts over 4,000 Corvettes every August. We will be writing more about this in an upcoming Inner Circle.
I bought a test gauge that in all my years of attending swap meets I had never seen before. It was also in mint condition, like it was never used.
PHOTO 3 - We show two views of this AC tachometer test gauge. The back opens up and contains these two clip leads. It measures about 6 inches long overall and has a 3-½ diameter cylinder shape. It has a single switch on it with the numbers 1 thru 8. On the front it reads, “AC Spark Plug Division,” but there is no date on it. I would be curious if any of my readers recognize this gauge and can tell me the vintage of it. I am guessing it is around the mid-1960s if it was used to test GM tachometers in cars. The GTO always had a tachometer as an option, as did most of the GM high-performance cars during the mid-1960s. I paid $125 for it.
LIGHTED REAR VIEW MIRRORS -
A few years back we used to sell used lighted rear view mirrors.
I recently replaced the one in my Impala as the lamination was bad. At the same time I discovered one of the LED lights we sell for the older GM cars fits the lighted rear view mirror with a minor modification. All I had to do was to slightly bend the metal contacts closer together to get a good contact. This tube style LED bulb has 9 LEDs on it, similar to what we sell for the G-body cars dome light replacement. That style is a flat panel and is designed to contact the ends of the factory contacts, rather than the sides. Our part numbers for this popular LED dome light for the Turbo Regals are #7661 or #7662.
GM probably made at least 6 or more various styles of lighted rear view mirrors before they came out with the ones with automatic dimming, temperature display option, and On Star features. I wanted to find one where the mirror was close to the original size and shape as the factory mirror in our cars. I recently found one that the mirror is identical in size and the light buttons are in the front under the mirror. It also is one that attaches to the factory fixture on the windshield with the single set screw. Some of the later GM lighted mirrors do not attach in that same manner.
Every owner of a car with T-Tops should be a buyer for this, since the lighting is marginal at best in those cars. Using LEDs makes this upgrade much better and eliminates any heat buildup, which can warp the internals of the mirror housing.
PHOTO 4 - We show the used GM lighted rear view mirror that we will be selling. This is the version we will be offering whenever we can find them. They will be cleaned and tested with two LED light tubes installed (a $20 value,) and include the 2 original glass bulbs as well. See this Rare Parts listing for prices and number of mirrors we currently have available. The LED light we install in these is a different version than what we sell for the Turbo Regal dome lights.
COMING SOON -
Coming soon, hopefully next week, we will have the specs worked out on having a kit together featuring some of the popular original automotive hardware powder coated in glossy black. I am referring to the c-clips, the coarse thread 10mm bolts that secure both the radiator overflow bottle and windshield washer reservoir bottle, the bolts to secure the cruise control bracket to the inner fender. and the one bolt that holds the power steering reservoir to the inner fender. Also in this kit will be the unique 10mm bolt with the wide washer that secures the battery bracket to the core support. Last, but not least the five 10mm bolts with the floating washer that secures the radiator bracket to the core support.
These will be powder-coated high gloss black, so they will not only add a nice touch to the engine compartment, but since they’ve been powder coated, they will stay nice. It is not easy to get the small c-clips powder coated because of their small size.
Watch for more information and photos possibly next week. We currently have a few sets getting done and I have a sample set already installed on our Turbo-T. They look great against the new reservoir bottles and on the radiator support bracket.
THE CHERVOLET SUBURBAN IS 80 YEARS OLD -
The 2015 Chevrolet Suburban is the oldest American surviving nameplate - 80 years old! I don’t know whether they planned it or not, but if you were to buy the top-of-the-line Suburban (LTZ) and check off every possible option and pay your transfer, title fees and state taxes, you would end up paying almost $80,000 to celebrate 80 years! This is why late-model GM SUVs are retaining good value in the market place, especially well cared for well-optioned late-model examples.
It made me think about the 1987 Grand National, which is now 28-29 years old. Today it takes about $28,000 or so to buy a mint Grand National model with less than 5,000 miles on it.
On the other hand, the Yugo, which was available in 1987, would be hard pressed to see $2,800 for an equally matching 5,000-mile 1987 Grand National.
Going back to my business roots, the 1964-1965 GTO is now 50 years old and a mint example of one of these cars can fetch $50,000 today, depending on how it is equipped.
PLANNING AHEAD -
I will be at the East Coast Buick Nationals only on Saturday, September the 19th. I will not be set up as a vendor. However, I plan to take my Tahoe and I can deliver rear Spoolfool fillers as long as you pay for it in advance.
Keep in mind, these are quite long. They will fit on an angle in a Turbo Regal as long as you do not have someone in your passenger’s seat. These would be unboxed and just wrapped. I do not recommend an open truck!
This would save you potentially $45 to $60 in shipping costs.
We can also bring any other items, as long as you pay for them in advance. I will probably be parked in the vendor area. I will also be accepting turbo cores, powermaster cores, mass air flow sensor cores, and steering wheel cores for parts credit. This would save you shipping these items to our office.
You need to contact us now if you want a rear Spoolfool filler delivered to the East Coast Buick Nationals Saturday the 19th.
FOURTH GENERATION CAMAROS & FIREBIRDS -
If you own a fourth generation Camaro or Firebird (1993-2002), we have a few used parts for those cars.

We also have several sets of the secondary hood latches and brackets that hold the hood struts done in high gloss black powder coating, complete with matching original hardware.
If you are interested, email me [email protected]
2000-2005 IMPALA PARTS -
While I was getting some parts for my personal 2004 Impala, I got some extra parts for these Impalas. I have several sets of the steering wheel radio controls, the optional main strut bar under the hood, rear spoilers, radio buttons, and the optional trunk trim guard.
If you are interested, email me [email protected]

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1984-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
UPPER DASH DUAL CONE SPEAKERS (2) SET
One of the toughest replacement speakers to find are the small ones that go in the upper dash corners. The speaker size is 3-1/2 inches.
Because of the age of these cars, the original speakers may be cracked from the heat or age.
We offer these new 3-1/2" diameter replacement dual cone speakers.
They have been tested by Richard Clark and are an excellent replacement speaker. These are a 2-way Performance Series Dual Cone Coaxial Car Speaker. You will have to modify one or both connectors on the plug end to attach the factory plug harness properly to these speakers. The plug end is basically the same, but the width is different from the original factory speakers.
If you have the Concert Sound II option in the doors, you need to order part #7689.

1978-1987 Buick V6 (including Turbo Regal) -
TIMING COVER GASKETS AND SEALS (7) KIT
This is the complete timing chain gasket kit for the original timing chain cover.
The original front seal from GM was a rope seal, which is subject to leakage.
This front seal included in this kit is a one-piece neoprene seal. Turbo applications need this better designed front seal because of the tremendous pressures the turbo engine builds up internally under boost.
This Timing Chain Gasket Kit consists of these 7 parts:
Front Oil Pan Gasket
Oil Pump Cover Gasket
Timing Cover Gasket
Timing Cover Seal
Fuel Pump Mounting Support Gasket
Water Pump Mounting Support Gasket
O-ring

NOTE - We recommend these gaskets be installed by a qualified mechanic.

Late-Model RADIO PLUG-IN HARNESS KIT
By using this custom harness, it allows you to plug your existing 1984-1987 Turbo Regal radio harness and antenna lead into this harness, which plugs into the later radios.
This eliminates cutting any of the factory wires. It allows the 12-pin harness to adapt to the 21-pin harness in the later AC Delco radios.
If you have a power antenna option, it will still work.
The harness and antenna lead can be seen in the photo. The big plug to the left is what the stock 3-part harness plugs into.
This is the same harness we have put with every late-model AC Delco CD player we have sold over the years.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
2
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

O-ring

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Late-Model RADIO PLUG-IN HARNESS KIT
By using this custom harness, it allows you to plug your existing 1984-1987 Turbo Regal radio harness and antenna lead into this harness, which plugs into the later radios.
This eliminates cutting any of the factory wires. It allows the 12-pin harness to adapt to the 21-pin harness in the later AC Delco radios.
If you have a power antenna option, it will still work.
The harness and antenna lead can be seen in the photo. The big plug to the left is what the stock 3-part harness plugs into.
This is the same harness we have put with every late-model AC Delco CD player we have sold over the years.
