MORE INFORMATION ON THE 1987 TURBO-T WE4 MODEL –

Some of the rarest original Buick literature to find for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals is the yellow pages called Product Information Bulletins. They can usually be found in a 3-ring binder that dealers had. These provide the actual facts concerning changes and updates that Buick did during the course of each model year. These bulletins would pertain to the entire Buick line up not just specifically for the Turbo Regal models.

In this first photo below is one of the shortest bulletins I have dated 11/13/86. The Bulletin number is #87-035. This bulletin stated that you could no longer order a WO2 exterior sport package with a black exterior paint code 19. Buick did this to eliminate confusion with the new WE4 Turbo-T Regal model that would shortly become available.

PHOTO 1 – Shows this Production Information Bulletin #87-035 Dated 11/13/86. This Bulletin was short and very brief. This is why so very few 1987 black Turbo-T models would have the WO2 exterior sport package also known as the blackout trim option. The SPID code was WO2 for this option on the trunk label.

The next Product Information Bulletin #87-031 is dated 11/15/86. It seems weird that the Bulletin number would come before the 11/13/86 bulletin number. This was a 2-page Product Information Bulletin giving the Buick dealership details on the new WE4 model. It listed the various differences between the Grand National and the new WE4 model. Stressing the point this model was lighter and theoretically makes the Turbo-T WE4 faster than a Grand National all for a lower price!

The second page of this Product Information Bulletin gave the dealer invoice, dealer price, and list price of the special Turbo package. It seems strange to me that it lists a front spoiler? I assume that is referring to what we call the front air dams.

PHOTO 2 – We show both pages of this 2-page Product Information Bulletin explaining the new Turbo-T WE 4 model. One can only imagine had the internet been up and running back then how many more Buick would have sold of not only the version they discontinued, but the new WE4 model. Both these Product Information Bulletins are originals from a Buick 3-ring binder. As you can imagine it is extremely difficult to find any of this original Turbo Regal information today.

UNUSUAL FIND AT A LOCAL CAR SHOW –

The other week I went to a local car show that had a few vendors set up selling various items. I came across something I had never seen before. Cadillac printed these pocket size booklets entitled Cadillac Quick Reference Specifications Guide. I bought the years 1991, 1992, and 1993. All three are in mint condition.

Each has ten difference chapters covering a multitude of specifications related to the various Cadillac models for that given year. It even gives the torque specs for the head bolts! It breaks down the codes for the transmissions. It gives all the diagnostic codes. It even shows the frame and body mounts and where they go for each model. I am not sure if these handy booklets were intended for potential Cadillac customers or strictly for sales people to use. Point is, I can’t believe a typical Cadillac buyer would even ask about 90% of the information in these handy booklets.

It would have been nice had Buick done booklets like this specifically for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. Closest pocket size booklets Buick did listed the options for each Buick model, with the SPID code and the cost factor for each option. I never seen such an informative pocket size booklet that Cadillac had at least during the 1990s.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the 3 Cadillac pocket size booklets 1991, 1992, and 1993. The second photo I am holding it open to the page related to the body mounts.

See the Rare Parts section as I have all 3 of these Cadillac Quick Reference Specifications Guide booklets for sale.

GTOAA NATIONAL MEET – MONKEEMOBILE –

The featured car at the GTOAA Nationals that I attended earlier this month was the restored original Monkeemobile. Two were built originally, one for the show and one for promotion tours. This one was actually found several years ago in poor shape in Puerto Rico. It was used as a courtesy car at a hotel.

This Monkeemobile was based on a 1966 GTO. Pontiac did this as they felt it was good promotion for the GTO. The gamble paid off for Pontiac as the TV show became a big hit. The TV show really was probably the first music video on TV. Davy Jones would later become a heart throb for teenage girls. This proved to be true as he was our guest at one of our Reunion events in the early 1990s at the Johnsville Airbase along with Molly for the Turbo Regal owners. Both men had a huge line of people wanting their autographs. At the time, Davy Jones had a farm near Harrisburg, PA.

In the photo below we show some of the Monkeembiles from my private collection. The rarest one is the large metal one that was made in Japan. It looks to be about 1:18 scale. It takes a single C battery. Unfortunately, whatever it did it no longer works. Currently one of these rare Monkeemobiles is on ebay for over $1,800 with the box! I can’t member what I paid for mine many years ago.

It’s a shame that both Davy Jones and Molly have since that event passed away, both at an early age.

PHOTO 4 – The photo on the left shows the restored Monkeemobile my granddaughter Devyn and myself. The photo on the right shows 4 different versions of the Monkeemobile toys from my private collection. The large one is all metal and Made in Japan. The next size one was a plastic model that I built. The next smaller one is a metal one made by Gorgi. The smallest one also is metal and made by Husky.

CAR AND DRIVER AUGUST 2018 ISSUE –

This August issue had a neat story in it. Most new car magazine articles usually focus on new cars and comparisons such as the Corvette ZR1 and the 911 GT2RS. Basically, cars out of the main stream price range. This issue had an article entitled “Battle of the beaters Vs: The Craig’s List Cup.” Basically they found a guy in South Carolina selling a group of 5 Geo Metro Hatchbacks. The GEO was to the car market like the Yugo was. Basically, a cheap throw away car after a few years. (Please no nasty emails about how good a GEO is).

The seller in South Carolina had them on Craig’s List all priced between a grand and twelve hundred dollars. Car & Driver decided to make a contest out of it so they sent some of their staff down to buy all the GEOs and then see who could be first driving it back to the main office in Michigan.

Prior to them making the deal one GEO got sold so that left 4 that Car & Driver bought and make a road trip to Michigan with. They did a full 7-page article on the contest featuring the 4 GEOs. This was a cool story on the various issues they encountered driving back to Michigan.

I always thought it would make a nice weekly contest on TV to have car dealers pick their top sales guy that appraises trade-ins and set them loose in a different state and see what the cheapest car they could buy and nurse it to a pre-determined destination with the least money spent.

I think it would make for some great story lines. They say the auto industry accounts for 7 out of every 10 jobs. Why not feature more TV shows today centered around the car industry. Many cars today can easily go 150,000 miles or better with just decent maintenance. You could make that one of the rules that the car has to have a minimum of 150,000 miles on it.

BUYING USED CAR AND HOPING TO AVOID THE ABUSED CAR –

At some point, we all have bought used cars for various purposes. In my life span I put that number at close to 100 between my wife and myself. I am referring to licensed and insured cars in my name. Each car has a story, some stories are just more interesting than others.

Here is one such story. Probably early to mid 1990s I was developing various cold air systems for various BMWs. I wanted a mint 1989-1990 white with black leather 5-speed 525 model. I mentioned it to Pete Serio, the original Window Rattle Guy, in Columbus Ohio. As luck would have it, he found one at a local BMW dealership. It was the exact combination I was seeking. Columbus is probably a 400-mile trip one way.

No problem, I worked Trey Crease a deal to drive me out to Pete’s place to buy the BMW. Trey was happy to make the trip. I bought the BMW. It was a Kirban quality car. No paint work never smoked in and the right color combination. (Few years later on a trip to buy a Turbo Regal I would spot a Lexus IS that I would later return to Columbus and purchase it as well).

It was a great car. Few months later I am reading in our local paper of another BMW 525 model 1989 for sale. The BMW was described as mint. Same time Trey is coming over and we are going out to dinner. I call the phone number in the ad.

The seller is a super nice guy describes his BMW as being mint in every respect. BMW owners are like Corvette owners. Usually these cars are real nice. I tell the seller on the phone I got a car that is basically the same as his and I know mine is mint.

He then offers a unique bet. He says you come see my BMW and bring yours. If mine is nicer pay me $10 and if yours is nicer I will pay you $10. I then said I will go one better if your car is nicer not only will I pay you $10, but I will buy your BMW and sell mine.

I tell Trey we got to make a small detour before going to dinner, and maybe pick up $10 for our effort. Trey already realizes that I am probably going to win the bet. We go see the matching BMW 5 series. It is indeed nice. Nicer than most, but mine hands down is far superior from any angle. It’s no contest and the seller true to his word paid me $10. True story...

Almost every BMW we owned the shop that specializes in BMWs would tell me to call him first as he would find me a buyer as he knew my cars were outstanding examples plus he worked on them for me. He found me a buyer for that BMW and the new owner wrecked it within 2 months.

ANOTHER SAD DAY IS FAST APPROACHING FOR US –

One of our oldest outside cats is near the end of his or her life on earth. No idea as to his or her age, but it’s well over 15 years for sure. The cat was one of two our neighbors who passed away several years ago had. I picked up the care for them. It took a few years to win them over. Always friendly to me, and always at our front door every morning with the other 3 outside cats that enjoy a comfortable life at the Kirban resort.

We have two different Buick Motorsports banners. Both are on a white background. These are 6 ft wide by 2 ft high. Both banner designs feature the turbo-six logo with the grey Buick Motorsports logo. On one banner the turbo-six logo is all red, and on the other it’s red and orange. These large banners are ideal for a side of a race trailer or display. These are the same high quality as the other GM licensed banners.

The price is $39.95 each. See photo 4 in 07-18-2018 Inner Circle. Total shipping is just $10 even if you buy one or both. You must call our office 215-766-1611 x 0 since we only have 1 of each.

ONE OF THE “BEST OF THE BEST” GNXs FOR SALE -

During my search last month for a GNX, I did hear from one-long-time customer of ours that still has his GNX from brand new. It has not been advertised as of yet, that I am aware of. They don’t want to really advertise it and be bombarded with low ball offers.

If you have $127,500 to spend and you want what may be the best GNX, this could be the one. The actual miles are under 600. It still has the New Jersey new car inspection on it. This car is absolutely like it came from the showroom.

Besides the usual items, such as the Window Sticker, jacket, and book, the seller also has the complete numbered #171 series of the Epitome Exclusives Ted Hirsch did many years ago. Besides this, he has all the original related paperwork, various posters, and all the magazines from back in the day related to the GNX project.

If this perks your interest and you got the available funds, email me - [email protected] and I can provide more specific details. There are less expensive GNXs available, but when you add up the extras and actual miles, this deal may be tough to beat.

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

One of the real bargains we offer is the original used rear view mirrors we offer. The new reproduction of the rear view mirror has a price tag of over $75, which we do not carry! Our mirrors although used, have been cleaned and are 100% exact to the original at just $21.95. The part number is #7707. Or, for those of you that have T-Tops we highly recommend our lighted rear view mirror #7708 for $28.95. These lighted rear view mirrors are very similar in overall shape to the original rearview mirror. They have new LED lights in them for better lighting. Either mirror is a great value.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1984-1985-1986 Buick Regal (All Models) -
and 1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
GM Licensed - Reproduction “SPID - RPO” CODES TRUNK LABEL

We offer GM Licensed reproduction SPID-RPO Labels, made by ECS Automotive Concepts. ECS also makes the GM Licensed VIN Door Decals we offer.

If you are having the exterior restored or if your label is damaged or faded, this is the time to replace it.

We need to have a copy of an original label in order to make either label.

NOTE - GM started to use the 1987 format partially through the 1986 model year. The reproduction you order will match whichever is on your car.

The 1984-1985-1986 labels have GM part #14065987. This label will be available at a later date.

The 1987 label has GM part #14085266 and is currently available.

IMPORTANT - They can only do it if you have an existing original label that you can scan or clearly photograph and email to us - [email protected]

They can NOT create a new label from scratch.

However, at some point GM did use the 1987 format on the late production Regals in 1986. So, it is important you see what GM part number is on your trunk label in the lower right hand corner of the gray bar.

The 1984 model was the very first year GM started to use the Regular Production Order (aka RPO) SPID label. In all cases, this label was put on the inside of the trunk lid. Generally, the 1984-1985-1986 was on the left side of the trunk lid and the 1987 label was on the right side of the trunk lid.

This label lists all the codes in alphabetical order, both options and features that came in your Regal. It also has your car’s 17-digit VIN number and the paint code.

Since it is VIN related, this is a critical label for any restoration. If your car’s label is faded or torn, we can get a exact reproduction through ECS Automotive Concepts.

Currently, we can only get the 1987 SPID label - GM #14085266. They are still working on creating the format for the 1984-1985-1986 label - GM #14065987.

Canadian delivered cars had a different SPID RPO label that is not available at this time.

NOTE - Allow 5-7 days for delivery. Label is sent Priority Mail from ECS Automotive Concepts

Another excellent replacement for any exterior restoration.

Buick Regal Trunk Label SPID RPO Codes - Buick trunk label - BACKGROUND INFO –

The Regular Production Order (aka RPO) codes can be found on the Service Parts Identification (aka SPID) label on the trunk of your Buick Regal.

Starting with the 1984 model year GM began implementing the SPID label program which entailed using an information label listing all of the options and equipment to help technicians service GM vehicles.

They not only included the RPO codes but also Buick paint and trim codes along with such information as spring and sometimes sub assembly codes.

There were several different labels used throughout the four years that the (most common & favored) Buick Turbo Regal was built.

The labels used for 1984, 1985 and partially through 1986 was a white label identified by the part #14065987 in the lower right corner of the label.

These labels also have a protective clear tape over them.

Cars built for the Canadian market utilized this same basic label but with a French language description on the lower half with the part #14065989 in the lower right corner.

Part way through 1986 and for the model year 1987 GM changed the label and it now has the part #14085266 in the lower right corner. The protective clear tape was also not used anymore.

Information on 1987 Canadian market cars is not available at this time.

By ordering a certain option on the vehicle, or ordering a special package, the codes for these options/packages generate many additional codes that are all part of that specific package. These codes are then automatically forced onto the specific build order, and also listed on the SPID label.

Here is a link to this label on our website.
