Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 07-13-2016 -
CORRECTING A MISTAKE FROM LAST WEEK’S INNER CIRCLE -
I should have looked more carefully in our 2005 Tahoe as it does indeed have a SPID label. It is the smaller size. It is located in the glove box. Several of our readers brought this to my attention.
As I said, our Tahoe is very well optioned. It has features/options I never use, such as a DVD player in the headliner and adjustable brake pedal to name two. Our Tahoe has a total of 98 codes on the SPID label. It even has the air ride suspension, which I have already had to replace. We did put the later 17 inch Chevy wheels on it, which made a big difference in the appearance.
So, with that said, it appears GM still uses the SPID label. However, with computers today the dealer can determine everything virtually from your VIN number.
DO YOU OWN A 1986-1987 GRAND NATIONAL? -
We have something FREE to the very first owner that emails me personally - [email protected] - I have a set of slip-on seat covers for bucket seats. They are a universal format. They are black and grey in color. I need someone to try them on their seats and provide feedback for us. I will also need photos as well. If this interests you, email me. You have to be able to do it within a week’s time.
It’s important to protect your Grand National seats. Unfortunately, no company has yet produced an exact fitting seat covers using the original pallex material.
SPID LABELS AND THE GNX -
As we mentioned in an earlier issue, we stated that the GNXs would have a high number of codes on the SPID label. They have 6 rows of 13 across, plus 9 on the last row, for a total of 87 codes.
I was always under the impression that all GNXs received all the best parts. On the photo I have of one GNX SPID label, this is not the case. For example, it shows the code J41, which means this GNX received steel rear brake drums not aluminum brake drums, which is code J42.
Even more surprising is I don’t see the codes for steel or aluminum bumper reinforcements. This seems strange to me. That no codes show up for either steel or aluminum. I always assumed that the GNXs all received the light-weight features, such as aluminum rear brake drums and reinforcement braces for both the front and rear bumper. If they did, for some reason, it may or may not be on the GNX SPID label.
So I am asking any GNX owners that are reading this issue to tell me if they have either a J41 or J42 code for the rear drums. And, if so, what drums do they have on their GNX. Also let us know the bumper reinforcement codes - it would be VD6 and VD7 for aluminum or VD4 and VD5 for the steel ones. Or maybe they don’t show either sets of codes on the SPID label. The critical code is T2L, which is the code for the GNX package. This critical code is on the copy of the SPID trunk label I have. Perhaps the aluminum drums where installed with the GNX suspension package at ASC, if the car was not equipped already.
With the goal being to have the GNX quicker than the production Grand Nationals, you would assume any parts that shed weight would become standard equipment on the GNX.
A LOOK AT ALTERNATORS -
We have been selling a lot of alternators over the last year or so. Even though our units are more money than most, turbo owners realize ours look exactly like the originals. This would not be that critical if the alternator was not so visible under the hood on the engine!
We take great pride in providing our source with the correct anodized coating for some of the parts he uses. I never realized that the fan is almost as unique as the pulley.
According to my source that hand builds each unit, that size fan was only used on certain full-size Cadillac and Oldsmobile models. You could put several different fan blades side by side with minor differences and not realize they are each different.
The fan is critical because it draws the air from the back of your alternator to the front to keep it cool. We all realize that turbo engines create a lot of heat.
The 1986-1987 Turbo Regals are also unique because the alternator is a 120 amp unit. For example, the typical Monte Carlo SS model alternator is less than 100 amps. For every three 120 amp alternators we sell we sell one of the 200 amp units.
Even our 2005 Tahoe, probably because of the number of options, uses a special optional 160 amp alternator. The dealer was able to tell me this from the VIN number, so I had my buddy get me a new one to have as a spare.
One of the more unique fan blades can be found on Corvairs as they turn in reverse so the blades are angled in reverse for cooling. See Photo 4.
PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows two typical used GM alternator fan blades. Fan blades are very similar in size but the one to the left is the correct one for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. It is slightly larger than the other one. One way to tell if your fan blade is correct is to check the tips of the blade. The tips should be as wide as the housing. These are both used. The photo to the right shows our brand new 120 amp alternator. Notice the pulley is black, and the stator section between the front and rear housing is also black. This is how it looked originally on your 1986-1987 Turbo Regal when it was new. While other colors such as gold may look real cool, it is not correct. Our units are all hand built by one individual and have a limited lifetime warranty as long as you own the car. I have known him personally for over 25 years.
As our cars get older, a good investment to head off any issues with the alternator not charging, is to buy the FieldFix™ Alternator Plug-In, part #6961. This was created and made by Caspers Electronics. It will continue to charge the alternator even if the bulb in the dash burns out or if the flex board on the back of the dash is bad.
Here is a link to this FieldFix™ on our website:
http://www.kirbanperformance.com/product/218/FieldFix+ALTERNATOR+PLUG-IN+by+Caspers+Electronics+%236961.html
PHOTO 2 - The photo to the left shows the original 120 amp alternator on our personal Turbo T. You can see how wide the fan blade. Allso the stator section between the front and rear housing is black. The photo to the right shows our original 1987 AC Delco mass air flow sensor.
1986-1987 TURBO REGAL MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR CORES -
See the photo on the right in Photo 2. It is these original AC Delco mass air flow sensor cores that we badly need.
Cardone does not have any of them in their supply of cores. We need these original cores to meet the needs of other customers.
If you have an original one with the plug pointing downward like in this photo, we will give you a Letter of Credit for $40 against any of our website parts.
The cheaper way to ship is by Mail.
MAILING ADDRESS - Kirban Performance, PO Box 1199, Plumsteadville, Pa 18949 with your Name, Address and Phone Number.
UPS ADDRESS - Kirban Performance, 6201 Kellers Church Road, Plumsteadville, Pa 18949 with your Name, Address and Phone Number.
Help us help others. Otherwise we will be forced to discontinue this service for our customers. To my knowledge no one has reproduced it as of yet. It would require the blessing from GM since it has the AC Delco wording on it.
A SIDE NOTE ABOUT COOLING
I know a little bit about the importance of cooling going back to when we started with the GTO business in the late 1970s.
When we started that business I discovered that Pontiac used 3 different sizes of radiator shrouds in the 1964-1967 GTOs. In many cases, it was an option or was part of the air conditioning package. Beginning in 1968 all GTOs had radiator shrouds. Some of them were plastic and one version was metal. We made all 3 versions in fiberglass. Ours were smooth on the exterior and rough on the inside, all done in black gelcoat. We sold thousands of them over many years.
The company that made them for us had major clients, such as Sesame Street, Disney, and Pep Boys. They made the huge Pep Boy figures that went on top of the buildings. They made the huge figures for those companies as well as other items.
Our GTO radiator shrouds were very popular for one main reason. It kept engines from overheating. Although they were not identical to the originals, keeping the 389 and 400 engines cool was far more important, especially on a fresh rebuilt.
I also discovered how to tell if a clutch fan was bad and the importance of the location of the fan blade to the shroud opening. In case you’re wondering, a good clutch fan with the engine turned off will come to a fairly quick stop instead of free spin. As for the fan blade location, it needs to be half in and half out of the back edge of the shroud to be the most efficient.
It would be years later before one of the major Pontiac companies would spend a lot of money to make the radiator shrouds original in plastic.
We also made the shroud for the 1966-1967 Nova 327 cars. The unusual fact we discovered with them was that the engine sits off center from the radiator and shroud. This is something most owners may not realize.
It helped back then to have access to several major junkyards to see firsthand what was correct on what cars.
So, if you’re at a major car show and see a 1964-1967 GTO, a 1966-1967 Nova 327, or a 1966-1967 Chevelle 396 and the radiator shroud is fiberglass with a rough inside, it’s one of ours from 25-plus years ago. We supplied the entire industry with them.
We still get made today ones for the 1967 Olds 442 models. It is a one year only shroud. The person that was the shop foreman that made our radiator shrouds years later would buy a brown Turbo T from us. This car was a winner one year at the GS Nationals.
So, you can see how even just little things related to cooling can make a difference. The proper size fan blade on your alternator will keep it cooler.
POWER ANTENNA CABLES -
The source that is rebuilding our power antennas sent me some of the broken plastic ones. He said some of the antennas were broken in more than one place. He also included a section of the steel cable that he uses.
PHOTO 3 - In this photo we show both the original used cracked and broken plastic antenna cable in the middle and right, and a section of the steel cable he uses (instead of the plastic cable) on the left. Note how yellow some of the original cables are in this photo.
I think power antenna failures ranks second to powermaster brake failures.
It’s understandable why the plastic cable would break, since it is wound so tightly in a small diameter housing for many years!
CORVAIR ALTERNATOR FAN -
I attended the huge show this past weekend in Doylestown. The weather was picture perfect and I would guess they had 400 or more cars in attendance. I did see 2 Corvairs so I took photos of the alternator fan.
PHOTO 4 - We show 2 different photos of alternators from 2 different Corvairs. You can clearly see how the blades have a completely different angle than the blades on your Turbo Regal alternator. This was something I was not aware of until this past week.
UPDATE ON SUMMERTIME MINI CONTEST -
Since announcing the summertime mini contest we have 1 entry of 50 codes at the low end.
At the high end we have 1 entry of 95 codes!
These are the 2 numbers you need to beat to be in first place.
Below are all the rules. There is still time to enter, if you can beat either of our current 2 entries.
Dealing with the current topic - SPID codes - I am curious to see who among our readers has the fewest codes on their SPID label and also who has the most codes on their SPID label.
The 2 winners will each receive a $50 Letter of Credit against any of our website parts.
Here are the rules that must be followed exactly.
In case of a tie, the earliest email will be the winner for that category.
Your answer must be emailed to me personally - [email protected] and include a photo of your actual SPID label.
The car must be a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal, which includes the GNX, WE4, and 1987 Turbo Limited models.
At the high end of the count, if you have over 96 or more codes, I would think you would be in the running. At the low end count, if you have less than 50 codes, I would think you would be in the running. For example - our 1987 Turbo-T has just 52 codes.
So submit your photo and information to be a possible winner.
The contest is open to all our customers, but not in a Turbo Regal related business.
The deadline to submit your entry is 6 pm eastern time, Saturday, July 23rd with the winners announced in the July 27th issue.
Actually the winner of each category really has a very rare Turbo Regal no matter if it’s a Grand National or a regular Turbo Regal.
I’m curious if any readers have a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal with 100 codes. Also, I am curious if any owners have one with 45 or less codes on the SPID label.
Good luck all participants.
A SOLUTION FOR THE BROKEN POWER ANTENNA continued -
As we stated in last week’s Inner Circle, we have a solution for a broken original GM power antenna. Actually we have two solutions.
To have your power antenna rebuilt, you must first contact Christina at our office - 215-766-1611 x 0 - to place the order with your credit card information.
The total price for the rebuild is just $99.95. You must have an original AC Delco power antenna. This would have a riveted bracket to the tube and have a collapsible top at the top of the tube. Because of the quality of the various replacement and reproduction power antennas our source does not have the parts to fix them. Only the original AC Delco ones that came in your car from the factory can be rebuilt. This includes return shipping to you to any of the basic 48 states. We will give you a “RO” number (Repair Order) and the address you need to ship your antenna to. It does not get shipped to us! The RO number is proof it has been paid for. This RO number must be on your label on your power antenna. You must attach a label with your name and address to it so you are assured of getting your original power antenna back.
NOTE - Do NOT send any of the bezel parts (metal bezel and plastic bezel under the metal one.) Only send the basic antenna. You must unplug the under-the-hood 3-wire harness (gray, white and green wires) from the antenna. Do NOT cut any of the wires.
NOTE - He will be taking a three-week vacation the end of July and the beginning of August. No shipments can be made during these three weeks. We will post reminders about this as the time draws closer.
We also have a limited supply of original AC Delco power antennas currently being rebuilt by our source. This is part #7703. These rebuilt antennas will have the original-style hex tip on the mast. The price is $149.95, which includes shipping to any of the basic 48 states. You must call Christina at our office 215-766-1611 x 0 to purchase one, as supplies are limited. Currently, we only have a few getting rebuilt. If you call and want a rebuilt antenna, we would not charge your credit card until we can ship it.
One thing we recommend you do prior to any power antenna removal is to purchase the Pete Serio booklet - “1984-1987 Turbo Regal - Power Antenna Removal and Installation Guide,” our part #6976.

As you read this, we have just 2 left of the correct power antennas in stock. We have just a few more getting rebuilt. These are completely rebuilt with the correct OEM hex head tip. Since these are totally rebuilt, they are better than original with a steel cable with a plastic outer sleeve.
The price is just $149.95 to your door. You must contact our office to get one of these - 215-766-1611 x 0.
They are superior to the original power antennas and have the unique hex head tip, which is what came on your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal originally.
IMPORTANT NEWS ON REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM DRUMS -
I am still waiting for word from Cardone as to when I can expect to have more aluminum brake drums available. If you wish a set from the next shipment, contact our office - 215-766-1611 x 0. We would not charge your credit card until we have them in stock. The price is $234.95 plus shipping.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Replacement BLACK METAL STOCK BREATHERS (2)
This is one of the key engine parts to keeping your Turbo Regal engine original. This is the black metal breather that came on the front of the passenger’s valve cover. A tube went into the other end that went to the inlet bell on the turbo.
If this breather is neglected, it becomes saturated with oil. Once it is saturated, the oil travels through and down the connecting tube, through the turbo inlet bell, and into the intercooler. The oil can coat the intercooler and the connecting hoses, and eventually gum up the throttle body.
We offer them as a pair, so you will have an extra breather.
Supplies of these original-style black breathers may become limited. Other versions are not black, nor are they metal.
These are identical to what came on your car when it was new.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged.
