1982-1987 REGAL - POWDER COATED SECONDARY HOOD LATCH AND SPRING -

One of the most ugly visible parts under the hood of your Turbo Regal is the secondary hood latch and spring that attach to the underside of the hood. Almost without fail they have all turned to a rust color, perhaps because Buick hardly applied any paint to them originally.

Repainting them is one option, but would only work for a short time compared to a baked-on powder-coated finish.

In order to properly powder coat the latch assembly, it has to be taken apart so the latch can be completely done and then reassembled. This can be costly for a shop to do unless they are doing more than one.

We just had several hood latches, springs and bolts powder coated in a high-gloss black. The end result can be seen in the below photo.

PHOTO 1 - Shows a typical used secondary hood latch assembly with bolts and the hood spring. Next to it is one that has been disassembled, cleaned, and powder coated in a high-gloss black finish. The end result is the latch assembly and spring look far superior to what they did originally. (See this Rare Parts listing for prices and quantity of some we currently have available).

U.S. CARS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM -

U.S. cars in the United Kingdom continue to be popular, according to Ian Reeves. Ian purchased a Grand National from us in 1997. At the time we sold the Grand National to Ian, it had 80,000 miles on it. It now has 93,000 miles.

He says fuel is still very expensive, roughly $8 a gallon in U.S. money. He says there know of about 5 or 6 Turbo Regals in the UK.

If you have a copy of my Kirban’s Guide to 1986 and 1987 Buick Turbo Regals, you can see Ian and the Grand National he purchased on pages 10 and 11. The one photo shows him at the local Yum Yum donut shop! He has even been to the GS Nationals a few years back. Ian recently sent me two of the popular car magazines that show strictly American Classic Cars.

I was surprised at the number of unusual restored U.S. cars that were featured in the magazine copies he sent me. Also several U.S. exporters that offered packaged deals that included shipping from the U.S. mainland to UK.

PHOTO 2 - Shows the two “Classic American” magazines Ian sent me. Note the unusual cover of one showing five different car front ends. These are the European size, 8-1/4" x 11-3/4".

RARE COLORS -

We recently wrote about the various exterior color combinations that you could have on a 1987 Turbo Regal.

I happen to have a Corvette Black Book and from 1981 through 1988 Corvette offered several two-tone paint schemes. In some years they had three different versions, and some years there were four different versions. You seldom see any of these today, probably because the 1981-1988 Corvette model years are not very valuable among Corvette collectors. I would venture a guess and say that the two-tone paint scheme was probably also available on many of the other GM cars from that time period.

I remember in the late 1970s when we had our towing business I had to tow a 1970 Chevelle hardtop. The car was a one-owner four speed. The clutch had gone out and when I picked up the owner and his car, he said he was thinking about selling it.

So, before the trip ended, I bought his Chevelle. I did not realize it back then, but it was a fairly unusual Chevelle. I believe it had bucket seats. The interior was red vinyl and the exterior was silver with a black vinyl top. It had the small V8 and a Muncie four speed. It was basically a poor man’s SS model.

Looking back, that interior and exterior combination was probably quite unusual.

One of the Turbo-Ts we had years ago had a rare color combination. I actually titled it and drove it for about six months. I even took it to the GTO Nationals in Indy that year. The exterior was silver with the black-out package and it had a blue interior. Almost all of the silver or grey Turbo Regals you see today have a grey interior. The GM grey interiors just never hold up well for some reason. This Turbo-T was quite nice with the dark blue interior against a silver exterior. I always thought the blue that Buick used on the interiors was a rich looking color of all the possibilities.

We will continue Rare Color combinations next week.

PHOTO 3 - Here is a photo of this 1970 Chevelle that featured a red interior, silver body and a black vinyl top. Had I been smarter back then, I would have taken more photos of the cars that have passed through my hands.

DOES YOUR STEERING WHEEL HAVE A RATTLE?

Does your steering wheel have a rattle? I would have to use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel on almost every Turbo Regal that we have bought. Even low-mileage examples had the same issue. The 3 small 7mm screws that secure the plastic base collar to the base of the steering wheel are usually loose! I don’t know if there is enough room for them to fall completely out and possibly jam, but if you can move the base collar, it’s best to fix the problem.

PHOTO 4 - This photo shows the typical plastic steering wheel base collar with the three 7mm screws alongside it. The screws are quite short, so they don’t grab much of the steering wheel. This is one reason you want to snug them up. Every year at the GS Nationals I can always find several show cars that have a loose steering wheel collar.

SPOTTED ON OUR LOCAL CRAIGS LIST -

A Hellcat Challenger with 1,000 miles on it with an $80,000 price tag appeared in our local Craigs List. It reminds me of when the GNX came out and first-time buyers where cashing in on the demand by pricing them over the Suggested Retail Price. Dealers had a special wording for that process… “Adjusted Market Value.” I understand Chrysler has stopped taking orders for the new Hellcat because demand is higher than their ability to make them! A great situation for any manufacturer to be in!

LOOKING FOR THAT DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH -

Looking for that diamond in the rough, you see a lot of rough examples before you find that diamond! I am referring to a recent search I did over a two-month period of trying to find a nice used car for under six grand. It had to have working AC, heated seats, a fold-down rear seat, and a huge trunk. It also had to be a mint example and not smoked in.

I finally succeeded last week. I found a one-owner car that was always dealer serviced. The owner even wiped down the factory alloy wheels once a week. This eleven-year-old car still has the rainbow anodized look on all four alloy wheels and no curb rash! The car also has the very dependable 3800 engine in it. It’s proof that if you are not in a hurry to find a replacement used car, patience pays off! Our Audi started to develop too many issues and had 140,000 miles on it. This 2004 Impala replacement car only has 76,000 miles on it.

In this category we will run the descriptions for two to three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. “The Power Pac Buick Performance and Restoration Tips” book by Steven L. Dove covers the popular Buick Turbo Regals; Grand Nationals, T-Types, Turbo-Ts, and GNXs. It was published in 1998.

The book measures 6" x 9", has 230 pages and includes eight chapters of information. One chapter highlights all the major players with fast Turbo Regals from Marka Gallina to Kenny Duttweiler. Another chapter covers transmission upgrades by Art Carr. That same chapter includes tidbits on getting your turbo car to run in the 11’s and 12’s.

A later chapter covers restoration and care of your Turbo Regal. There is a tech talk section with John Craig on turbo upgrades and a chapter on suspension and brake upgrades. Another chapter deals with all the specifications with quick data information covering all Turbo Regals from 1982 through 1987, including the GNX.

The “Guide to 1978-1987 Buick Grand National, T-Type and GNX - FACTS & FIGURES BOOK - SERIES #II” covers the history of the Buick Regal from 1978 through 1987. It has many pictures and shows actual Service Bulletins covering the Turbo Regals from GM. Very informative with many pictures and illustrations. It measures 6" x 9" and has 260+ pages, and was published in 1992.

These are great additions to your Buick library of information.

1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CONVERSION VACUUM BRAKE BOOSTER KIT with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal

This is another option to consider if you have a fairly stock 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal and want to switch from the original powermaster brake system.

This kit comes complete with everything you need as shown. This kit is very similar to Part #7625 however, it does not include a factory vacuum brake pedal. Instead we include a correct size machined pin that needs to be welded to the original stock brake pedal. Directions showing proper measurements come with it, so this machined pin can be done by a welder on the original brake pedal rod.

It comes with a REBUILT Cardone brake booster and a BRAND new master cylinder. The booster has a 9" diameter. The master cylinder and vacuum booster in this kit are exactly what GM used in 1986-1987 on a non-Turbo Regal application.

There are no clearance issues with this unit and the stock remote power steering reservoir.

It also comes with our new vacuum block with gasket and hardware. It has the vacuum port similar to what GM used on the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. We also include 2 feet of vacuum hose and our new reproduction gasket to firewall.

This booster kit uses the same factory holes in the firewall as the powermaster.

Since nothing gets cut or drilled related to the original powermaster, the original powermaster can be re-used should you want to convert back to the factory set up at a later date. However, you would need to acquire a brake pedal for a Turbo Regal to have it function properly.

We highly recommend installation be done by a qualified mechanic, since you have to properly bleed the brakes and need to weld the new brake pedal pin to the factory pedal rod. You also have to cut off the original pin from the brake pedal rod. Make sure the system is operating properly under all conditions.

Remember, your best option is always to stay with the factory GM powermaster brake system. This unit is only to be used with a stock or a fairly stock Turbo Regal. A modified engine or one with a performance cam would cause vacuum levels to be greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems. One possible solution would be to purchase an additional vacuum canister to retain proper vacuum levels from Summit or Jegs.

When purchasing this kit, you may also want to purchase Part #7218, Stainless Braided Brake Hoses, as these will improve the stopping ability.

For our rebuilt powermaster brake unit, See our Part #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.
However, if you have a STOCK engine, there is adequate vacuum to switch over to a vacuum brake system. We have another option: Our Part #7625 - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with vacuum brake pedal.

The difference between #7625 and this kit #7679, is that this kit comes with the correct pin instead of a vacuum brake pedal.

NOTE - A vacuum brake system is NOT recommended for a Turbo Regal with a modified engine or one with a performance cam because vacuum levels are greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems.

NOTE - Be sure to check out the other options we offer for converting the Turbo Regal brake system - Part #7625 Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with Vacuum Brake Pedal, Part #7617 Hydro-Boost Conversion Kit, or #7618 HYDRATECH Hydro-Boost System conversion. Related parts to consider are #7218 Stainless Braided Brake Hoses and #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.

NOTE - We recommend installation be done by a qualified auto mechanic. Welding is required.

7679 - 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal - $329.95

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
