EXPLAINING THE SPID CODES (TRUNK ID LABEL) continued -

When our cars were new, the critical label was the SPID label. This provided the information to order anything specifically for your car from a dealership.

At some point in the later years, all that information can be found on a dealer’s computer based on your 17-digit VIN number. In recent years I believe GM no longer puts a SPID label on their vehicles. If it has been phased out, I have no idea what year GM stopped using a SPID label.

I can’t find any SPID label in the truck on our 2005 Tahoe. On the other hand, the 2004 Impala I recently sold did have a SPID label. In many of the GM cars that were front-wheel drive from the 1990s, the SPID label was affixed to the spare tire cover.

PHOTO 1 - Here are 2 photos showing the SPID label inside the glove box of a late 1980s / early 1990s S-10 pickup truck. In the photo on the left, not only is the SPID label there, but also the tire info decal as well. In the photo on the right, only the SPID label is attached.

On our cars that decal is on our driver’s door jamb area.

In both of these cases, the decals appear to be identical to the decals used on the 1987 GM cars.

PHOTO 2 - The photo shows the later format SPID label that is identical to the one that was in our 2004 Impala. It measures approximately 3-½ inches wide by 2-½ inches high. It does not have a GM part number on it.

PHOTO 3 - The photo shows an early SPID label from an earlier S10 GM pickup truck. I believe I removed this from the glove box. It shows less than 20 codes.

At some point for some of the 1987 GM models GM began to put a VIN decal on every panel. These were also on tamper-proof paper identical to the VIN door jamb decals GM used. If you own a 1989 Turbo Trans Am, you will see these on every body part. This is one easy way to see if any of the body panels had been replaced. Although they did not appear on the 1987 Regals, they did appear on other GM cars and I believe some of the other 1987 Buick models such as the Riviera.

PHOTO 4 - These 2 photos are of a 1987 Oldsmobile 98 model. The photo on the left shows the inside trunk lid with the SPID label with the VIN decal attached just above it. The photo on the right shows the VIN decal on the actual door.

Again I am not an expert in this field, but at some point it appears GM stopped putting VIN decals on all the body panels. We have a 2012 Chrysler product and that car has the VIN decals on all the original panels. It would appear to me that some car manufacturers may still use the VIN decals. It is very helpful tool for anyone in the used car business. A CarFax alone is not 100% accurate. It’s good to have it, but not one source is 100% foolproof.

TIME FOR A SUMMERTIME MINI CONTEST -

Dealing with the current topic - SPID codes - I am curious to see who among our readers has the fewest codes on their SPID label and also who has the most codes on their SPID label.

The 2 winners will each receive a $50 Letter of Credit against any of our website parts.

Here are the rules that must be followed exactly.

In case of a tie, the earliest email will be the winner for that category.

Your answer must be emailed to me personally - [email protected] and include a photo of your actual SPID label.

The car must be a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal, which includes the GNX, WE4, and 1987 Turbo Limited models.

At the high end of the count, if you have over 93 or more codes, I would think you would be in the running. At the low end count, if you have less than 52 codes, I would think you would be in the running. For example - our 1987 Turbo-T has just 52 codes.

So submit your photo and information to be a possible winner.

The contest is open to all our customers, but not in a Turbo Regal related business.

The deadline to submit your entry is 6 pm eastern time, Saturday, July 23rd with the winners announced in the July 27th issue.

Actually the winner of each category really has a very rare Turbo Regal no matter if it’s a Grand National or a regular Turbo Regal.

I’m curious if any readers have a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal with 100 codes. Also, I am curious if any owners have one with 45 or less codes on the SPID label.

Good luck all participants.

MORE PROOF IT’S A SMALL WORLD -

As many of our readers know, I go to various You Pull It junkyards on the weekend. Within 50 miles of our location are about 5 or 6 yards, some with as many as 5,000 to 7,000 cars.

I supply other companies with parts and it allows me to do more research for our business. It’s also great exercise since it requires a lot of walking.

This past Saturday I was at one yard that has over 5,000 vehicles and I heard someone yell out my name. Steve Eisenberger from Willow Street, Pennsylvania, a long time customer, just happen to be there also looking for GM parts for another car. He could not believe his eyes. This yard was probably about 40 miles from his house. This is the first time I have run into one of our customers in a You Pull It Yard.

NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING -

It’s amazing that Clint Eastwood at age 86 just finished directing another movie that will be out this fall. It stars Tom Hanks as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger. The movie covers one of the most heroic real life deeds in recent memory as Captain Sully put his jet aircraft down in the water safely. I know all 155 passengers and the crew members on that aircraft will be forever grateful for the skill demonstrated by Captain Sully. It was later described as the “Miracle on the Hudson.”

Clint Eastwood has always been one of my favorite actors. In recent years he directing more movies than acting in them.

ON THE NEWSFRONT -

On the news front, the August 2016 issue of Muscle Machines has a 6-page article featuring a low-mileage original GNX.

In the photos that accompany the article, the only minor flaw I saw was in the photo of the radio. It was missing the spun aluminum discs on both knobs.

In the same issue, is an interview with Burt Reynolds. Interesting enough, he owned a GNX back when they were fairly new. We sold him some parts for his GNX and somewhere we have an autographed photo of Burt he sent us at the time.

INTERESTING DISCOVERY -

Once in awhile I will buy a magazine called AutaBuy. It usually runs about 190 pages. It features collectible cars of all types from around the country. Each page has an average of 12 to 15 cars on it. There were maybe a total of 150 pages of cars for sale. I counted fewer than 5 Grand Nationals for sale and just 1 WE4 in the magazine. With an approximate count of 1,500 cars listed for sale, fewer than 5 were Turbo Regals in the issue.

SLAVE CYLINDERS -

Back in the 1960s and 1970s American-made muscle cars never had a slave cylinder format for the 4-speed manual shift cars. However, this was not the case with some of the foreign cars, even going back to the 1960s. I know this firsthand from an unusual experience.

We started our towing business in the summer of 1968 after I ended my three-year stint in the Army that spring. Our first tow truck was a one-ton early 1950s vintage Chevrolet truck with a Manley hand crank. I was young and stronger then.

Our early clients back then were the owners of several major apartment complexes in our area, several of which were around military bases. This was a very good business for us.

I was hired to remove cars that were out of inspection or car that previous tenants had simply left in the parking lot. There was one particular case where the owner had a 1964 Volvo 122 sedan. It was a manual shift car. The owner was disgusted with the car since he said it needed a clutch. The inspection was expired and he knew once I removed it, it would be costly to get the car back.

The car was in very nice condition and I remembered that Volvo had a very good track record for holding up in collisions. I think I paid $50 for the Volvo. Once I got the car home and had it checked out, it turned out the issue was a bad slave cylinder, which is why the clutch did not work!

Eileen used that Volvo for several years. True story!

Later I would also buy a 1964 Volvo 544 model. That is the model that resembled a 1948 Ford. Some of you old timers may recall that years ago Paul Newman had a Turbo Regal engine put into a Volvo wagon. I remember the owner that bought it did get some parts from us at one time. I have no idea where that car is today.

A SOLUTION FOR THE BROKEN POWER ANTENNA continued -

As we stated in last week’s Inner Circle, we have a solution for a broken original GM power antenna. Actually we have two solutions.

To have your power antenna rebuilt, you must first contact Christina at our office - 215-766-1611 x 0 - to place the order with your credit card information.

The total price for the rebuild is just $99.95. This includes return shipping to you to any of the basic 48 states. We will give you a “RO” number (Repair Order) and the address you need to ship your antenna to. It does not get shipped to us! The RO number is proof it has been paid for. This RO number must be on your label on your power antenna. You must attach a label with your name and address to it so you are assured of getting your original power antenna back.

NOTE - Do NOT send any of the bezel parts (metal bezel and plastic bezel under the metal one.) Only send the basic antenna. You must unplug the under-the-hood 3-wire harness (gray, white and green wires) from the antenna. Do NOT cut any of the wires.

NOTE - He will be taking a three-week vacation the end of July and the beginning of August. No shipments can be made during these three weeks. We will post reminders about this as the time draws closer.

We also have a limited supply of original AC Delco power antennas currently being rebuilt by our source. This is part #7703. These rebuilt antennas will have the original-style hex tip on the mast. The price is $149.95, which includes shipping to any of the basic 48 states. You must call Christina at our office 215-766-1611 x 0 to purchase one, as supplies are limited. Currently, we only have a few getting rebuilt. If you call and want a rebuilt antenna, we would not charge your credit card until we can ship it.

One thing we recommend you do prior to any power antenna removal is to purchase the Pete Serio booklet - “1984-1987 Turbo Regal - Power Antenna Removal and Installation Guide,” our part #6976.

Here is a link to these Rebuilding/Rebuilt Power Antennas on our website:

REBUILT 100% CORRECT 1984-1987 TURBO REGAL POWER ANTENNAS -

As you read this, we have 4 or 5 correct power antennas in route to us. These are completely rebuilt with the correct OEM hex head tip. Since these are totally rebuilt, they are better than original with a steel cable with a plastic outer sleeve.

The price is just $149.95 to your door. You must contact our office to get one of these - 215-766-1611 x 0.

They are superior to the original power antennas and have the unique hex head tip, which is what came on your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal originally.

IMPORTANT NEWS ON REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM DRUMS -

Our shipment of aluminum brake drums came in last Friday and we managed to fulfill all our orders for them before the Holiday weekend.

I am checking with Cardone to find out when they get their next shipment, since we depleted the stock their initial stock between my order and one of our wholesale orders.

Many of you should have them by now or in the next day or so.

CAR FOR SALE - 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL -

This 1987 Buick Grand National has the optional factory astro-roof (CF5). It has undergone a complete frame off restoration. The seller has fully documented with photos in a binder. The owner even was able to use brand new original Pallex material on the interior. This is a top-notch Grand National where no expense has been spared. Hundreds of hours went into the bodywork alone. All the glass and interior were totally removed. NOS GM parts were used when possible to make this car like new again. The motor was completely rebuilt and balanced. A new Limit Engineering TA 49 turbo was installed.

All new body mounts. NOS GM taillights and bezels were used along with a NOS GM grille. The bumpers were totally stripped with NOS front and rear bumper strips installed.

Here is a chance to own one completely redone and enjoy it. The seller may take another 1986-1987 Turbo Regal in partial trade. The price is $39,500. This car is exactly as described, show quality from any angle, including underneath.

This Grand National is located about 20 miles from my shop. One of the best restorations you will find of a Grand National.

For more info, email me - [email protected]

CARS FOR SALE -

From time to time, whenever we spot an unusual or an exceptional car or truck for sale, or one we have for sale, we will put a blurb in our weekly Inner Circle. Also, any cars that our customers have for sale will be featured here and you can see their car with photos on our website. In this category, we will run the descriptions for two-to-three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. Any new vehicles that we add will appear first, so the oldest listing would be at the end of this section.

If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.

LOCAL CAR FOR SALE -

I spotted this car on the way to work this past Monday. It’s an all-original 1982 Camaro Berlinetta coupe.
A one-owner, original paint, garage kept example with a mere 55,000 miles on it. Car is super straight and clean, grey in color with grey cloth interior V8 powered with bucket seats and a console. Even the fancy optional wheels are like mint.

This is the first year for this model. I have known the seller for many years. He originally bought it for his son but changed his mind.

It is priced very reasonable at just $4,495. This car is over 30 years old and only has 55,000 miles on it. No dents, no rust. It would be a nice car to cruise in or detail for shows with maybe a young new driver in your family.

You can email me for more details and photos - [email protected]

The car is maybe 5 minutes from our shop.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Replacement BLACK METAL STOCK BREATHERS (2)

This is one of the key engine parts to keeping your Turbo Regal engine original. This is the black metal breather that came on the front of the passenger’s valve cover. A tube went into the other end that went to the inlet bell on the turbo.

If this breather is neglected, it becomes saturated with oil. Once it is saturated, the oil travels through and down the connecting tube, through the turbo inlet bell, and into the intercooler. The oil can coat the intercooler and the connecting hoses, and eventually gum up the throttle body.

We offer them as a pair, so you will have an extra breather.

Supplies of these original-style black breathers may become limited. Other versions are not black, nor are they metal.

These are identical to what came on your car when it was new.

1984-1987 BUICK TURBO REGAL
CCCI (Computer Controlled Coil Ignition) SensorCheck MODULE

Important notice Caspers is currently out of this part and is awaiting parts. We don’t expect to have any available until the end of July at the earliest. The demand for this part has been more than he anticipated.

The Computer Controlled Coil Ignition (CCCI) is probably the least-understood system on your Turbo Buick powered vehicle. The most common problem is the “No-Start” condition, and there are very few tests that a car owner is capable of performing to determine a faulty component in this system.

This simple CCCI SensorCheck Module plug-and-play diagnostic tool is designed to troubleshoot your ignition system for the most common “No-Start” scenario. Specifically, it will display a simple LED to indicate the status of the CAM sensor, CRANK sensor, Coil Power and MODULE power. The CAM LED will visibly blink rapidly during idle. The CRANK LED will appear to be continuously on (due to the rapid Crank signal) when the vehicle is running normally. The POWER LED will be illuminated when the MODULE fuse is working. There are 3 LED’s assigned to each model: “HOT AIR” (1984-1985) and Intercooled (1986-1989.)

It can also be used to set the cam sensor!
No CAM signal = No Spark, No Injector pulse
No CRANK signal = No Spark, Only Inj pulse
CAM signal initiates sequential spark. Without it, No spark.
CRANK signal initiates fuel injector pulses.
No Lights, good fuses = Check ECM ground return wire.

This clever device eliminates any guesswork as to why your Turbo Regal won’t start, if it’s related to the cam sensor, crank sensor, coil pack, or coil module.

It comes with easy-to-follow directions. It is all plug-and-play to conduct the tests to determine where the problem is originating. By using LED lights, you can pinpoint where the problem originates.

By a flip of a switch, it works on all 1984 to 1987 Turbo Regals including, the 1989 Turbo Trans Am.

A must-have tool that saves the guesswork when you have a no start situation.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
