GOOD NEWS - 5 NEW TURBO REGAL VINYL BANNERS APPROVED BY GM -

Good news, GM has approved 5 of the dozen or so Turbo Regal banners Eileen has been working on through the company that has a GM license for Buick. We will be the first company to offer these for sale.

These banners are not yet on our website. You must call our office 215-766-1611 x 0 to order them. We would not charge your credit card until we can ship your order.

Please refer to the part number assigned with each one below when contacting our office. We should have them available to ship by the end of next week. We show 4 of the new GM approved banners in Photo 1.

NOTE - Not shown is the “Buick Motorsports” banner, part #8605. We will show it next week.

PHOTO 1 - The top left shows the iconic 1987 Grand National with the hubcaps in the background, part #8602, $42.95. This is from the actual 1987 Buick Dealer Album. It measures approximately 2ft by 4ft.

The top right shows the extremely rare GNX ad that ASC did back in 1988, part #8601, $38.95. I had this ad on a perma-plaque that Eileen had to modify to make it work for a banner. Banner measures approximately 2ft by 3ft.

The bottom left shows the T-Type banner with the saying, “A Boost of Buick Performance,” part #8604, $42.95. This is the tag line we came up with years ago for the Turbo Regals. This banner measures approximately 2ft by 4ft.

The bottom right photo shows the ultra-rare WE4 from the original flyer that Buick did, part #8603, $38.95. Banner measures approximately 2ft by 3ft. This is an extremely rare flyer.

UPS ground shipping runs about $12-$14, no matter if you buy 1 or more than 1 banner. Hopefully, GM will approve the others that Eileen has prepared to go on a vinyl banner.

Currently Eileen is working on several banner designs for the GTOs, 442s, and GS’s. This company we are working with holds a license agreement with GM for Buick-Olds-Pontiac-Cadillac-GMC-Hummer.

A LOOK AT THE 1986 BUICK PRESS KIT -

Last week we covered the 1985 Buick Press Kit. This week we examine the 1986 Buick Press Kit. Most readers would agree that this was the year that Buick really stepped up with their new intercooled Turbo V6 engine in the Regal coupe body that many of you have come to love.

Buick introduced 11 new models for 1986 model year. The Riviera saw a lot of advancements in electronics, including a Graphic Control center. The T-Type versions were offered on 6 different Buick models including the Regal.

Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) became an option on some of the Buick models for 1986. What I found interesting was that on another Buick News page it talks about a new Automatic Gaging System to gage every panel for dimensional accuracy. It further states that the cars are positioned on a huge granite block while a fully automated measuring machine goes over the entire body to verify the precision of fixtures and tooling.

It also goes on to say that Buick will have more robots working than any other body assembly area in General Motors. (I think they forgot to program the robots to install 4 of the lower body bushings to help align the bodies on the frames!) No idea where those robots are today so I can ask them.

Another interesting note concerns exterior painting, claiming to use the latest technology in coating to produce what is expected to be the finest quality automotive paint jobs in the industry! Any original owner of a Grand National or a black Turbo-T may find that statement not true! Ford had better painting results on their 5.0 Mustangs.

Another paragraph may answer one of your questions and that is the plastic-like letter tag on the frame near the back of the car. It says there is a tag that is read by computers to initiate operations such as printing manifests, welding, automated glass installation and testing without manual intervention. Again, I am guessing that may be what that tag means on the frame by the rear wheel opening. This is just a guess on my part.

The Turbo Regal for 1986 was rated at 235 hp at 4400 rpm and 330 lb ft of torque at just 2800 rpms. That was the key to its quick off-the-line performance - the 330 lb of torque at just 2800 rpms. The 1986 models also saw a new leather-wrapped steering wheel, special Gran Touring suspension and front air dam. The air dam was 2 pieces rather than one continuous piece as they had the previous year.

It also states Lear Sear Sieglar bucket seats were available, however that was not the case. The curb weight was 3,199 pounds. The Grand National was available again, only in black. Gray cloth bucket seats with a full-length operating console. Once again, the Buick News gave very little coverage to the Turbo Regal models. More data is shown on the Riviera and some of the other 1986 Buick models.

Again, the main focus and descriptions were based on the Riviera and all the technology that went into that model for 1986.

PHOTO 2 - The photo to the top left shows the folder for the 1986 Buick Press Kit. The Hawk was still the main logo. The photo on top the right shows a spread of the Buick News that breaks down each Buick model and describes all the new features for the model year.

The photo on the bottom left shows the front of the High Technology Brochure giving the details on the new Intercooled 3.8 SFI Turbo. The photo to the bottom right shows the inside spread of this 4-page brochure. This is just one of several full-color brochures that came in the 1986 Buick Press Kit.

PHOTO 3 - The top left and top right shows the very rare 1986 Buick Regal T-Type specifications sheet for the new intercooled Regal T-Type. The 0-60 time is listed at 6.9 seconds. Curb weight is estimated at 3,256 lbs. The bottom left photo shows the Buick Century Limited Coupe and the Buick Regal T-Type. For whatever reason, the Century coupe turned out to be a very rare car as most were 4-door sedans! The photo to the right shows the new 3.8 SFI Turbo with intercooler and the 2.0 OHC MFI Turbo.

In all of the photos I have that show the intercooler 3.8 SFI engine, the up pipe or “inlet pipe” as it is sometimes called is always black. It is important to remember that all factory photos and brochures are done way ahead of actual production, so changes can happen between the photo session and production. For some reason, I don’t have a photo of a 1986 Grand National.

COMING NEXT WEEK - THE 1987 BUICK PRESS KIT -

TOUCH UP PAINT -

We sell a lot of the popular colors of the spray paint for the Turbo Regals. The company we deal with is really good at nailing down exact colors.

Recently I wanted to get a spray can of paint and a touch up pen of paint for my 1996 Ford Ranger. Nowhere on the truck is the exterior color indicated. I gave the VIN number to my local Ford dealer who gave me the color code for the paint - Cayman Blue Metallic DA/4438. With that information I was able to get our supplier to mix up an 11-ounce spray can and one of those touch-up pens. The match is perfect.

I then wanted to get it for another one of my personal cars, which is a 2003 model. Many of the later car models have the paint code on a label on the door jamb. This 2003 and my 2004 car both have the paint code on the door jamb area. All three of these vehicles have original paint.

It occurred to me that some of our customers may also be looking for a spray can and touch-up pen of the correct matching paint for their used car. Dealers only can provide you with a Touch-Up Pen as they do not offer a spray can.

I am testing the waters to see if there is any demand to add this service to our website. If you provide the paint code for any U.S. or foreign car, we can get you an 11-ounce spray can and a Touch-Up Pen both for $49.95 plus shipping. Simply email - [email protected] with the paint code and within 3-4 days we can have it made up and on its way to you.

PHOTO 4 - We show the 11-ounce spray paint can and the Touch-Up Pen that you would get labeled with your code and color for your application.

UPDATE ON REPRODUCTION SPID DECALS -

ECS Automotive has recently done another sample for us to examine. I am not sure at this writing if it is the early SPID decal or the later one. Watch for updates.

D.J. FONTANA R.I.P.

The name D.J. Fontana may not be familiar to most of our readers, but he was Elvis Presley’s first and long-time drummer. He died last week in his sleep at the age of 87, according to his wife. He was the last surviving member of Presley’s original core of musicians. He met Elvis on the Louisiana Hayride, a popular and influential radio and TV country music program based in Shreveport, Louisiana.

DWIGHT CLARK R.I.P.

A name every football fan should know, Dwight Clark. He died due to complications related to ALS. He was only 61 years young. He played 9 seasons all for the San Francisco 49ers. He is probably best remembered for “The Catch.” With under a minute to play in the 1982 NFC Championship game against the Cowboys, he caught the winning touchdown at the back of the end zone. He fully extended his body to haul in the throw from Joe Montana. The 49ers went on to win the Super Bowl that year.

Dwight’s passing brought back a flood of memories to me personally, as for many years we had Sunday dinners at my parent’s house in the 1980s. During football season, we watched many of these Sunday games. We saw many of the great quarterbacks of the day play. My Dad was not loyal to any one team, he just loved the action of the game.

As years passed, I would travel out to my parent’s home and take my Dad and Mom and my brother to Olive Garden for a Sunday lunch and then back to their home. We would watch the Sunday afternoon football games and then I would head home. (They had moved from Washington State to a place 2 hours away from where we live). These later occasions were slightly different as my Dad was getting up there in years and often would fall asleep during the Sunday afternoon football games. I miss those times.

BEACH BOYS AND SATELLITE RADIO -

In my opinion, one of the greatest advancements in car radio music is satellite radio and its many channel sources, some of which do not have commercials. My wife and I have it in almost all our cars. This summer channel 4 has been devoted entirely to the Beach Boys. I don’t believe any other rock ‘n roll group has mixed music and cars to the extend they have in their songs, coupled with the “California sound.”

I heard two Beach Boys songs on channel 4 that I had never heard before. You can check these songs out on Youtube. One is called “Add some music to your Day.” The other is “California Saga.” They should make the second one the theme song for California. Both songs have that typical Beach Boys sound that really clicked for their successful sound all those years. They had 36 top 40 hits, and to this day hold the record for most top 40 hits by any American Rock Band.

I still remember my Dad had a brand new red 1961 T-Bird when the Beach Boys had the hit record “Fun, Fun, Fun.” The T-bird was a cool car with the steering column that would swing out. The only car my Dad bought that was cool. He viewed cars basically as transportation. His eldest son, as you can tell, took a different view of cars!

PONTIAC HALL OF FAME UPDATE -

The voting is all in for the Pontiac Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, in the “still living” category I did not make it on the first ballot. However, as long as I am still living, I have four more chances to get nominated into the Pontiac Hall of Fame. I think one reason I fell short on the ballots this year is because most of the other living nominees were more associated with the entire Pontiac carline whereas my focus was strictly with the GTO models. It is still an honor to be nominated this first year.

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

If you own a 1986-1987 Grand National with the stock wheels and center caps, remember it is the side of the lug nuts that secure the center cap. You do NOT bend the tabs down on the center cap to have the lug nuts tighten against the center cap.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SPOOLFOOL DRIP-LIP Flywheel (Torque Converter) Cover

Mike, owner of Spoolfool, has created another great practical high-quality product. It’s a fiberglass flywheel (torque converter) cover that has a built-in drip tray. What’s even crazier is that it works.

It is a known fact that 90% of oil leaks on our cars either happen at the back of the engine or end up at the back of the engine. This clever flywheel cover with its built-in drip tray catches those drips, so the oil does not drip on the ground or on the crossover pipe.

Mike has named this new product the “Drip-Lip.” The piece is made in glossy black fiberglass and it replaces the metal or plastic fly wheel cover. Not only is it lighter than the factory metal flywheel cover, but it will not rust.

This Spoolfool Drip-Lip replaces the stock dust cover and keeps oil from dripping on the ground by trapping it in a special tray that attaches to the bottom of this custom-made cover. It has a removable cloth that absorbs any oil that would normally drip and stain your garage floor or driveway. The small cloth catches any oil from dripping and is easy to remove and replace when it becomes fully soaked. This fiberglass dust cover replaces the factory dust cover. You simply reuse the factory bolts and install this dust cover in place of the plastic or metal one.

Like all of Mike’s fiberglass products, the quality is excellent.

If you are into drag racing, this is a critical part as it eliminates dripping oil from the car onto the race track.

So far, the initial results have been that 80% of oil leaks can be kept from dripping on the ground, track and crossover pipe with it installed on a car.

Up until now, the joke has been that if it ain’t leaking oil, you might want to check the oil level. This unique Spoolfool Drip-Lip hopes to change all that.

This product is NOT FOR EVERYONE. It is only for cars with oil leaks (which is most of the Turbo Regals.)

Spoolfool Production Drip-Lip features:
*Catches engine oil from a 3.8 liter Turbo Buick engine
*Keeps smoking oil off the exhaust crossover pipe
*A must-have part for street or strip car
*Half the weight of an original metal flywheel cover
*Since it is fiberglass, it won’t rust out
*Easy installation
*Made in the U.S.A.

An excellent way to solve the oil drip problem.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

Remember, if you reside anywhere near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, the GTOAA National event is held June 28th thru 30th at the Oaks Expo Center. I am speaking that Thursday morning at 10 am. This is a rare chance to see over 300 GTOs in this area. By most accounts, the GTO is the car that started the muscle car era. The car show day is Friday.

NOTE - I just heard from Vic Schreck who runs the Susquehanna Valley GTO club that is in charge of this year’s GTOAA Nationals. My seminar is the first one at the show. I already have over 60 people registered to attend. Not bad for not being involved with GTOS for over a dozen years. I have to brush up on my knowledge of Hurst and GTOs.

I can't remember if the definition of GTO is - “Gas Tires Oil” or “Good Times Often.” He also says over 80 cars are registered for the inside Concours Judging and over 150 for the outside judging. Concours would be the “cream of the crop” cars.
