Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 06-19-2019 –

A WEEK OF MISFORTUNE –

This past week Carrie was driving their 6-door Ford F-650 in the middle of the afternoon and a deer tried to dart across a major 4-lane highway near their house. The deer failed to make the leap over the truck. Instead it hit the side of the truck bed and cracked the one-of-a-kind custom- made rear fender. The deer also dented the second door. The damage has been estimated at $22 grand by the insurance company.

Also, last week the hand-carved “KIRBAN” from a tree stump that Darrell carved as a Father’s Day gift for me in 2011 crashed down due to rot and heavy rains. Recent heavy rains and high winds over the last several months finally brought the 22-foot stump crashing down. Fortunately, Stephen, who cuts our lawn, had just cut our lawn two days prior so no injuries were incurred!

We were not able to save two of the letters, the “K” and “I”, as they were broken. He cut the other letters apart and we saved them.

PHOTO 1 – The photos on the left and middle shows Darrell 8 years ago carving the KIRBAN letters into the remains of a tree in our yard. The lower middle photo shows Darrell and Devyn standing on top of the bobcat machine, which gives you an idea how tall the carving was. The photo on the lower right shows it last week after it fell down.

CONGRATS TO CRYSTAL AND DENNIS McGETTIGAN –

Crystal and Dennis McGettigan took first place at their first show with their 1987 Grand National at the “2019 Under the Lights” Car Show in nearby Lansdale, PA this past Saturday. Unfortunately, I was not able to make this yearly event.

We only have 2 left of the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal Test Pipe, part #7422, at $53.95 each. If you need one, call to order – 215-766-1611 x 0.

FOR SALE - OUR PERSONAL 2005 CHEVY TAHOE 158,000 MILES –

Since we hardly use our 2005 Tahoe, we have it up for sale. Purchased in April of 2011, it has 158,000 miles on it. It has never broken down on us. Tahoe has been garaged since we owned it. This Tahoe is the LT model with air ride suspension. The body and paint is like new with no dents. We plan to replace it with a smaller SUV.

It has virtually every possible option including captain heated leather seats, tow package, satellite radio, Navigation, ceiling mounted DVD player with 2 sets of head phones and remotes, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, On-Star, 3 keys 3 remotes, bed liner, steering wheel controls, power seat, power lumbar, separate rear heater control, upgraded 17 inch 2008 Chevrolet wheels with near new Michelin tires. The Tahoe has always been serviced, no leaks, no noises and runs 100% smooth and quiet. Clean CarFax. We are the second owner.

Most importantly zero rust issues. It has never been smoked in. You could look at a dozen 2005 Tahoes and not find one this nice. I looked at quite a few of them before buying this one. The price is $8395 obo. I currently have it for sale at the dealership where I have a license.

PHOTO 2 – We show 4 different views of our 2005 Tahoe. For more photos and to check on availability, email me direct [email protected]

DETERMINING A REAL GNX –

As prices for GNXs continue to climb into the six digits, the risks of buying one that is either missing critical original parts or buying a reproduction GNX will also rise along with the values. It happens with almost any American muscle car from fake Chevrolet Yenkos to fake GTO Judges to fake 1964-1965 Lemans making them tri-power 4-speed GTOs or converted 440 Mopars fitted with the Hemi are just some examples. Probably enough fakes have been made over the years to have a special yearly auction just for fake or reproduction American Muscle Cars!

No buyer wants to wake up the next day after a major purchase only to discover the car he just bought was misrepresented and is a fake. I know firsthand of a case right now on a GNX that was purchased at an auction that lacks the correct GNX turbo.

Almost everything has been reproduced to make an imitation of a real GNX. All you need to start with is a 1987 Grand National. It is one thing to build a replica GNX for yourself. The issue arises on how you market it when you sell it. At some point down the road the next seller may not be as honest, which can create an issue if it is sold at an auction and you are not 100% honest.

Adding to the problem is not every real GNX was 100% identical. According to my old writings in my monthly Grand News, the early ones did not have 2 rivets securing the fender louvers. They did this later due to issues. Also, not every metal body trim plate will be stamped with the letters GNX.

Unless you have access to an entire list of 547 GNX VIN numbers, you are at the mercy of your knowledge and the honesty of the seller. Adding to the issue, once a GNX number is revealed that has issues, that info is locked into the internet casting a doubt on that particular GNX for many years to come. It is like trying to correct an error on a CarFax, which is almost impossible to do. I know it as I tried to do it years ago on a Turbo Regal.

Many parts have been reproduced to “imitate” a real GNX. There are at least two things that have not been reproduced, to my knowledge. The big part is the special GNX turbo. The actual shield has been reproduced and unless you hold it in your hands and compare it to an original, you would be hard pressed to determine the difference. I believe the inside welds may be different and the material used may have been different, which affects the weight.

The bigger issue is the actual turbo. Its appearance is different than the stock 1986-1987 turbo. It’s hard to explain and hard to detect unless you can actually remove the turbo shield or know where to run your fingers under the front ledge to determine if it has the trap door feature. Naturally, the engine must be cold to do the finger test!

A regular 1986-1987 Turbo will fit perfect under an original GNX turbo shield, which is one reason a potential buyer needs to verify the real GNX turbo is under the shield.

Another smaller detail to look for on a real GNX is the front plastic inner fenders. ASC cut a portion of the back area out of both front inner plastic fenders and put a flatter plastic patch in that area to allow more clearance for the 16 by 8 tires. This is a small detail perhaps, but an easy one to verify with a quick visual inspection. Again, to my knowledge, nobody makes this unusual part.

There other things to look for, but if these two parts are not correct it would raise a red flag immediately, at least for me as a buyer. Even Window Stickers can be reproduced quite easily because all the options/features are the same. You just need to drop in the 17-digit VIN number on a copy of an ASC Window Sticker. In the next photo, we show the differences in those two critical GNX parts.

Remember, the two critical GNX things I point out are what I have found as being difficult to reproduce or being quite difficult to find today. There are a number of other parts and documentation that need to be looked at when examining a GNX for authenticity, but these are immediate areas should be examined first with a quick visual inspection.

PHOTO 3 – The top left we show a stock 1986-1987 Turbo Regal turbo. The top right we show a real GNX turbo that has an extension on the front part of the turbo that requires a different turbo bracket to fit the GNX turbo shield. Even the bracket to secure the GNX turbo is slightly different, so the turbo shield will fit properly. You can clearly see how a regular 1986-1987 Turbo Regal turbo would easily fit under a GNX shield since it is smaller! The bottom left photo shows an original driver’s side 1986-1987 inner plastic wheel well. The photo to the bottom right shows the driver’s side of a real GNX inner plastic wheel well that has been modified with a plastic patch that sets back further to allow better wheel clearance. At least that was the idea. You can see the difference, even in the color black of the two different materials on the GNX.

MACK TRUCK OPEN HOUSE –

This past Saturday we got a personal tour by our granddaughter of the Mack Truck assembly plant in Macungie. The one building is one million square feet and they are in the midst of expanding it. The yearly Open House is the only day you can take photos. This was a great treat for us since we are in the automotive business. The assembly line was not operational that Saturday. They run two lines - one for conventional trucks and one for cab-over formats. They do a tremendous business building various city trash trucks and some are even fitted with snow plows for double duty.

They run three shifts. All the supplies to assemble the trucks are sorted and stored at another warehouse. They get over 150 deliveries of parts every day!

It was amazing to see the workings of this factory. I never realized when the build on the frame, it starts with the frame upside down to affix the springs and brake parts before it gets flipped over. Single rear wheels are becoming popular on tracots, as seen in the one photo.

PHOTO 4 - I show various photos I took inside the Mack assembly plant. The top left photo shows the engine with its massive turbo. You think your turbo is big! The photo in the top right shows their top-of-the-line over-the-road conventional truck. As more and more trucks are needed, the market is growing for over-the-road truckers. Truck manufacturers are making those trucks more luxurious. The photo in the bottom left shows the frame upside down that has been fitted with the brake and suspension parts. The photo in the bottom right shows how complicated the exhaust systems have become. Years ago, the phrase “Diesel Exhaust Fluid” was never heard.

We will show more photos next week of the Mack Assembly Plant and the Macungie antique truck show we also attended the same day.

CLASSIC CAR MAGAZINE WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU –

Classic Car Magazine, part of the Hemmings magazine family, is currently working on their Issue #185 for 2020. That issue will highlight the many outstanding cars there were produced in the 1980s.

As a Turbo Regal owner, here is your chance to contribute. You can write [email protected]

Who knows, you may get your story included in that issue!

MORE INFO ON GNX #480 AND THE 2007 MUSTANG –

According to Tim who has purchased the 2007 Mustang, his father Larry went through a lot of trouble to buy GNX #480. Buick would not sell a GNX to a new Buick car dealership unless they sold a large number of Turbo Regals just to qualify. According to Tim, between his two families, they bought a total of 17 of the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regals. His dad also had to make a petition to Buick headquarters by letter and phone to get a GNX purchased and delivered to Mena, Arkansas.

It had to be a presold GNX, so they drew up a contract and Letter of Guarantee. The GNX #480 was not titled but kept on an Open MSO in a Texas dealership name. His family and owner of the Texas dealership were very close friends. Tim’s father was an Air Force officer and flew under a special SAC Team as a navigator on a B-52 bomber. After his tours in the Air Force, he became the private pilot for the family friend that owned that Texas Buick dealership. That is the background on GNX #480 with 8.8 miles that changed hands at $200 grand this past spring.

CLASSIC CAR INSURANCE –

With Turbo Regals values on the rise, it’s critical to have a written appraisal for your pride and joy to protect your interest in case of an accident. According to Terry Shaw of AUTOMOTIVE LEGAL SERVICE, who does appraisals for insurance companies, some of them have a new rule. That new rule is, if your car is being worked on at a shop it is not going to be covered if something happens to it at that repair shop.

Several major collector insurance companies have adopted this new rule, so it’s important that you check with your insurance company. This gives them a loophole if something were to happen with your collectable car while it is at a repair shop.

I kept regular insurance on all the cars I have owned that were collectable but had a stated value assigned to the car. There were no restrictions on miles I drove them or when I drove them. It’s the stated value that was the key feature if something was to happen. I recommend you have an appraisal to have a stated value on your policy if that is an option.

Now may be the time for you to contact your insurance company to clarify the coverage on your cars.

Terry Shaw’s phone number is 215-659-4947 or [email protected] for more information on collectible car insurance. I have known Terry Shaw personally for well over 35 years.

HONDA BREAKS THE RECORD –

Honda now holds the record for the fastest lawn mower from 0-100 mph. You read that right. It only took 6.29 seconds to clock that speed. The average riding mower putters around 5 to 6 mph. This Honda riding mower has a top speed of 150.99 mph. In other words, you could keep up with traffic on the highway while riding this mower!

The rules to win the title required the mower to actually be able to cut grass, look and function like a mower, and record the run in both directions within one hour time. Unfortunately, this mower is not available commercially. In case you’re wondering, the same engine can be found in their CBR1000RR Fireblade SP motorcycle. It puts out 200 HP at 13,000 rpm.

UPDATE TURBO REGAL WRIST WATCH –

I have not yet heard back from the company on acquiring more of those popular Turbo Regal watches.

FOR SALE – 1940 FORD SEDAN STREET ROD - $29,900 –

Local to me and owned by one of the sales people at the little car dealership I am associated with is this really nice custom-built 1940 Ford Sedan 2-door. It is not advertised on the internet. The body is 100% all steel that came from Nebraska. It was custom built in 2002. John the current owner, got it two years ago with 10,000 actual miles on it. It now has 12,000 miles.

It is setup for cruising at highway speeds and is fitted with vintage air, rack and pinion steering, tilt, cruise, and 6-changer CD player. The car has a dual fan arrangement that keeps temperatures down, even in heavy traffic. It is automatic. Car has a beautiful custom leather interior. Even the trunk is completely finished off. Actual rear ratio is unknown, but cruises very nice at 65 mph.

Car has been lowered 2-½ inches in the front. The flames are hand painted. The paint is a Mustang Grabber Blue with matching blue interior. The car is powered by a Chevrolet 350 V8 and is NHRA inspected. Car has been professionally built. The firewall has been sanded perfectly smooth. All the wiring is properly done and labeled at the fuse box to identify. Seat belts have been installed for front and back seats.

Car runs 100% with zero issues and everything works. Engine drips no oil. This car was built to be enjoyed. This is a chance to own a real nice all-steel vintage street hot rod at a very reasonable price. Car has had excellent care since it was reborn in 2002. Price is $29,900.

The car is in my neighborhood. Email me [email protected] for more photos and any questions. See photo 3 in last week’s Inner Circle (06-12-19)

GNX #206 FOR SALE –

We are selling GNX #206 for one of our long-time customers. While several GNXs can be found for sale on the internet, what separates this one from the pack is not only does it have the GNX book and GNX jacket but the trunk is full of everything associated with a GNX and all the documents back to the original owner in 1988. It is a 2-owner car. This GNX has never been advertised since the current owner purchased it in 1998.

It has been garaged with the wheels off the ground. Even the steering wheel was covered. Most unusual is that the little rubber bumpers are on both doors that came on the car when it was shipped is still on the car! I did not count them but Molly’s signature appears on a dozen or more items, including the GNX jacket. Car has 100% original paint and 100% stock. Front and rear fillers have just been replaced in the last 30 days.

The car still smells factory new. Mileage is 23,839 and original. Car has the latest PA inspection. It’s close to 100% perfect in every regard. The factory paint is outstanding, a term you seldom see used on a black Regal of any version. The price tag is $99,900. To help ease the pain, since I hold a license, I am open to consider any car or cars in partial trade. Trade value cuts down the sales tax bite and out-of-pocket money. Remember, a partial trade car need not be a Turbo Regal. It can even be more than one car. Buying this example eliminates any surprises that some of the other GNXs seem to have that are for sale. This GNX is one that can only advance in value. You can email me for more photos. My email is [email protected]

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
