Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 06-03-2015
JUNE CARTOON -
PHOTO 1 - Our first photo is this month’s “Adventures of Tommy Turbo” cartoon. In honor of June and the start of car show season, the caption reads, “IT’S TIME TO PRIMP-UP FOR THOSE SUMMER CAR SHOWS -- NOT YOU TOMMY -- THE CAR!”
EGR - EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM -
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation system is probably better known simply as the “EGR” system.
It consists of the round EGR valve and the EGR control solenoid assembly that sits directly behind it on the driver’s side of the engine. We mentioned this system briefly in a previous Inner Circle. As we noted in that issue, the EGR control solenoid takes a small filter. Most owners neglect this filter, probably because they are unaware that it even exists.
PHOTO 2 - In this photo, we show the actual EGR control solenoid, the 2 caps I took off and the 2 different possible filters that may be inside. The original filter is the paper-style filter with the metal cap at both ends (top right.) The foam filter is a replacement filter (lower right.) It’s something to remember if your wife ever quizzes you on what filter is in the EGR solenoid on your Turbo Regal!
CRANK SENSOR -
The crank sensor that came on your 1986-1987 Turbo Regal was redesigned because the original could fail.
When I had the recent trouble with our Turbo-T, I also had them check to see if our car still had the original crank sensor on it. It turns out the original crank sensor was still on our car with 80,000 miles on it. Since they were working on the car, I also had them replace the crank sensor with the new redesigned one, our part #7327. We sell this redesigned one for $59.95. The next time you have your car on a lift, you may want to see which crank sensor is on your Turbo Regal.
PHOTO 3 - In this photo we show both the original crank sensor (on the left) and the redesigned replacement sensor (on the right.) The original sensor was metal the replacement is a hard plastic and is a smaller design. You might have to clean yours off to actually see what version is on your car!
ROAD TRIPS -
Many of us have taken a road trip over the years.
With the recent road trip Ross took driving to Texas in his recently purchased GNX, I can recall several other buyers who would fly in and drive their new purchase back home.
One cross-country road trip comes to mind. In 1997 Bill Coulter purchased a 53,000-mile 1986 Grand National for just under $10,000. He made it a vacation trip going to several places down south on his way back home to California. He is pictured on the bottom of page 11 in my Kirban’s Guide to Buying a Used 1986 & 1987 Buick Turbo Regal. If memory serves me correct, he was a schoolteacher, so he had the entire summer off. The only issue he had with the car was a flat tire. He would come back a few years later and buy an Oldsmobile LSS from me and once again drive it back to California. Again, if I remember correctly, he almost bought a third car from me but it sold before he could make a deal for it. I think it was the 12,000-mile Olds 442 I had. He probably holds the record for the longest road trip from point of purchase!
I took many road trips not counting all the ones I did to buy the 300-plus Turbo Regals I would go and get and bring back home.
In the early 1970s and through part of the 1980s I would be on the road 10-12 days every month working for my Dad who would give talks throughout the country. I would haul his books and sell his books at these meetings. I also would set up the meetings in the various cities.
Of course, in the winter we would focus on the southern states and in the summer we would do the mid-west and northern states. One trip was for 6 weeks when my Dad would speak in various locations in the state of California.
It was a great time as I usually took an open trailer with me and would try and buy a car and bring it back to resell. My Dad travelled with another person, so I could take any route I wanted as long as I made it to the meeting on time in the evening.
One of my early road trips in 1973 with my Dad started in Rapid City, South Dakota. I headed out 3 days prior and was supposed to meet my Dad and his associate at the Rapid City airport to begin the speaking trip. I was about 100 miles from Rapid City, South Dakota in my pickup truck when I lost control of my truck and flipped it over. I was unhurt, but had to have my pickup truck towed into Rapid City. Needless to say, this was a terrible way to start a 10-day speaking engagement trip!
That opening night my Dad asked the audience if anyone owned a car dealership or worked at one. Fortunately, someone did have a GM dealership, so we went there early the next morning. I ended up buying a slightly used 1973 Ford XLT pickup truck. Back then the license plate went with the used vehicle, so I drove on South Dakota plates for almost an entire year.
PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows the South Dakota license plate from 1973, which I still have. The photo on the right shows a laminated picture my Dad took in 1974. He took it from his car as they followed me on the highway on one of the trips. He then penned the poem that is under the photo and gave it to me in September of 1974.
I got to travel to almost every state on these road trips. I would easily drive over 20,000 to 25,000 miles in the course of the year on these road trips.
CARS OWNERS ARE LIKELY TO SELL AFTER THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP -
Cars owners are likely to sell after the first year of ownership the 2014 Buick Regal. The article I read states 1 out of every 10 new Regal owners trade their car in the first year. They take about a 28% hit in the car’s value when they do this. Of the top 7 cars, the Buick Regal is number 1 in this category.
What is interesting is the article, it says nobody would sell a Buick Grand National! I know from first-hand experience when I was buying the low-mileage Grand Nationals in the early 1990s, if I had original paperwork the Monte Carlo SS was the most popular car being traded in on the Grand National. This is based on records that I would see on the cars I bought.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CUSTOM-MADE DRIVER’S SIDE POWDER-COATED BLACK RELAY COVER
The part GM forgot... This 1986-1987 Turbo Regal custom-made driver's side powder-coated black relay cover is cut exactly like the cover GM used on the passenger's side fender that shields the relays from moisture.
Although GM never made one, we have had this custom-made as a matching cover for the driver's side relays... this cover is a must for covering these three relays. Remember, moisture can cause critical failure of the fan delay relay and eventually kill the battery since the fan delay relay is wired directly to the battery. The fan delay relay is not a sealed unit, so anything you can do to keep moisture out of the unit is important.
Once installed this custom-made cover looks factory. The relay cover is powdered-coated in satin black to closely match the relay cover on the passenger’s side inner fender. Cover is easy to install and comes complete with two mounting screws.
NOTE - These covers will NOT fit a GNX.
Another nice item to enhance your engine compartment.

1984-1987 Buick Regal -
Reproduction 3-PIECE and 1-PIECE REAR SPOILERS
These reproduction 3-Piece and 1-Piece Rear Spoilers fit all two-door Regal models from 1984 through the 1987 Regal models, including all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals.
These reproduction spoilers are made by Spoolfool Productions, which also makes the popular one-piece rear fillers and two-piece front fillers. The same high quality can be seen in these two versions of rear spoilers which are made in the USA using hand laid fiberglass in gloss black gelcoat. Due to the nature of these materials, small imperfections; pits, scratches, air bubbles, etc. are to be expected and are normal for this type of product.
The gelcoat is meant to be painted over, however, many customers are happy with the way they look right out of the box.
Each spoiler comes with mounting screws.
Spoilers are ready to install. Some holes may need to be slightly elongated, as every car is unique from the factory.
The three-piece rear spoiler is an exact match to the original GM Grand National rear spoiler.
The one-piece rear spoiler simply attaches to the trunk lid and over laps both of the rear quarter panel corners. This is similar to the Monte Carlo factory rear deck spoiler.
We also have another 1984-1987 Regal - Reproduction Fiberglass 3-piece Rear Spoiler, #6694

NOTE - We recommend these spoilers be installed by a qualified body shop.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

IN CLOSING -
I just sold a bunch of late 60s and early 70s VW parts to a company in California that restores Volkswagens
The owner told me they are working on restoring a VW window van and expect it will fetch over hundred grand when done.
If you had told me 40 years ago that any VW with its miniscule 36 hp engine would be fetching 6 figures years later, I would not have believed it!

CRANK SENSOR -
The crank sensor that came on your 1986-1987 Turbo Regal was redesigned because the original could fail.

It turns out the original crank sensor was still on our car with 80,000 miles on it. VEHICLES FOR SALE -
From time to time, whenever we spot an unusual or an exceptional car or truck for sale, or one we have for sale, we will put a blurb in our weekly Inner Circle. Also any cars that our customers have for sale will be featured here and you can see their car with photos on our website. In this category we will run the descriptions for two to three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. Any new vehicles that we add will appear first, so the oldest listing would be at the end of this section.
If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT HANGER LOOP
Over time, the factory catalytic converter rubber hanger loop can break away from the original metal catalytic converter bracket.
This rubber exhaust loop can easily be modified to replace the original worn out rubber hanger part on the original rear catalytic converter hanger.
As long as the original metal hanger is still in good shape, you can install this part to replace the rubber loop part on the original hanger. We include mounting hardware, if needed.
The entire factory hanger is no longer available from GM.
