1971 BUICK SKYLARK FOR SALE -
About 20 minutes south of our office on a used car lot sits this very nice 1971 Buick Skylark post coupe for sale. I’ve known the owner of the dealership for many years. He is selling it for a friend of his.
It is a post coupe, which is somewhat rare. Post coupes have a stronger body to work with if you plan to make some serious horsepower over a hardtop model. It appears that the car has about 86,000 original miles on it. The entire car is of driver’s quality with the exterior being better than driver’s quality. The body and bright chrome work are extremely nice. Bumpers appear to have been re-chromed. I am told the paint color is green fire mist.
It has wide white stripes down the hood and trunk lid of the car with what appears to be a correct spoiler for that vintage Buick. You don’t even feel the edge of the paint stripes against the rest of the paint. It is powered by a 350 V8 that appears to be stock. The dual exhaust system is fairly new. Engine runs out nice with no noises. It has power steering and power disc brakes up front. If I am reading the body trim plate correctly, it was originally a beige color exterior. There are absolutely no traces anywhere of the original paint color as it appears the car was disassembled prior to painting. The factory clock even works.
The car is quite solid and any trunk area repair work was done extremely well years ago. The paint and bodywork are quite nice. The interior is also very nice. Car would be a prime candidate to drive and enjoy and maybe at a future date drop in a 455 stage engine. The price tag is $16,995.

FORDS AT CARLISLE -
I recently attended the Fords at Carlisle. The focus for year’s event was on the first generation Ford Broncos. This covered the 1966 through 1977 vintage. Generally these are a rare sight in my area, since rust killed many of these cars years ago.
At Carlisle there must have been 75 to 100 of these first generation Broncos. I had never seen so many of these 50-year-old Ford Broncos in one place. Not only are bodies being made for them, but one company remakes them like new again. They custom fit them with a 5.0 engine. This cost can run $80,000 to $100,000. It made me wonder if when our Turbo Regals near the 50-year mark, will there be companies remaking new Turbo Regals?
These Broncos were quite crude when they were new. I can remember my father-in-law having a two-tone Bronco that Eileen’s older sister Paulette drove to work for many years.
Two VIPs at Fords at Carlisle were Paul Michael Glaser “David Michael Starsky” and Antonio Fargas “Huggy Bear,” stars from the mid-1970s TV series Starsky and Hutch. There was a special class for the red and white Starksy and Hutch Gran Torinos.
PHOTO 2 - The photo on the left shows Antonio Fargas and Paul Michael Glaser signing autographs in one of the buildings. They had a long line of customers the day I was there. They even had one of the actual cars used in the TV series on display. The photo on the right shows just a portion of the Gran Torino red and white look-alikes that were on display on one of the fields.
PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows the very last Bronco that was sold, according to the flyer in the windshield. It was first titled in 2013. The other photos show some of the Broncos that were in attendance.
PHOTO 4 - Shows two photos of a barn find, a 1967 Shelby GT 350. It is reportedly 1 of just 5 built. The car is well documented. It has air conditioning and a 4-speed, which makes it rare according to the description.
GM CARLISLE IS THIS COMING WEEKEND -
GM Carlisle is this coming weekend. I will be speaking in the main seminar tent Friday 11:30 AM and again Saturday at 9:30 AM. I will be speaking mostly on Hurst, Hurst Olds and the door jamb VIN decals.
The main focus this year at the GM event is the Hurst Olds. As many of you realize, the Hurst Olds shares basically the same G-body as our Turbo Regals. Although the Hurst Olds lacked horsepower, they did get a far better interior and gauge cluster.
One may even agree the factory wheels on the Hurst Olds looked better.
In case you’re wondering why Hurst chose an Oldsmobile for the conversion instead of a Pontiac or Buick, the simple reason is George Hurst always liked the Oldsmobile better, even though I am certain he made most of his money with GM making shifters for the Pontiac models, since they had a very heavy production of 4-speed GTOs. Oldsmobile and Buick, as many of you know, were mostly automatic cars.
I will be able to take any cores you may have, so be sure to bring them as I will have my Tahoe on the grounds. This saves you shipping.
We have a very critical need now for correct 1986-1987 AC Delco mass air flow sensors. The correct one has the plug that points downward to the ground. The screens can be missing. The mass air flow housing can’t be cracked or painted. We will allow $40 store credit for correct units. This helps us help others retain an original 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. We are very fortunate that Cardone will still rebuild them.
VIETNAM / 50 YEARS AGO / TURBO REGALS -
We heard from a number of people about this article from last week. Several customers who also served in Vietnam, including some that landed a job in Vietnam like I did, where their background proved to be helpful in getting a job that catered to their skill sets.
The following story comes from Aaron Coen from California -
“Life is strange, connections happen at the craziest of times. My grandfather served in the 2nd Marine Division during WWII, he landed on Tarawa, Saipan, Okinawa, Tinian and the occupation of Japan. As a young teenager I worked in his tire shop and was fortunate enough to have him share his life experiences with me. The stories of his childhood and how he joined the Marines at 14 years old, made it through boot camp and then was kicked out only to return to Marine boot camp 3 years later after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He shared stories of his island hopping campaigns, horrors of battle and coming home… His stories fascinated me, he never hesitated to share his experiences.
In the mid-90s, a couple years following my grandfather’s death, my grandmother was contacted by a man who had a Japanese battle flag signed by my grandfather along with signatures of other Marines, the collector was elated to find that he had made a connection with a name on his flag. My grandmother was offered the flag at a very reasonable price but declined to purchase it at the time… As time passed, she regretted not purchasing the flag and in the meantime she had misplaced the collectors contact information, but she did remember a connection. The collector was close friends with the son of one of my high school teachers, who actually taught my mother 20 years earlier. The teacher was well liked and my mother had stayed in touch over the years.
We ended up making the connection with the collector and purchased the flag and presented it to my Uncle on Christmas that year. The flag was signed by about 40 Marines including my grandfather… One of our families prized possessions, made possible by a single connection.”
EXPLAINING THE SPID CODES (TRUNK ID LABEL) continued -
Last week we touched on one of the easiest to install options. From the factory, it would have as the SPID code “A90.” I remember that the trunk release option was available for all the GM cars, at least as far back as 1964.
For example, the 1964 and 1965 GTOs used a basic cable design with a chrome metal handle. It was also installed in the glove box on the passenger’s side. This cable format can be described a very long choke cable that cars had years ago.
Younger Turbo owners probably have no idea about choke cables being used on car engines! In 1966 GM (at least in the GTOs) used a cable trunk release for part of the year and then switched to a vacuum trunk release. In 1967 they switched to an electric solenoid format. Today most cars have a safety feature of a small pull cable, if you ever find yourself locked inside your trunk!
Perhaps the most rare option that would show up on your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal or on any G-body car would be either the radio delete option or the engine block heater. In my opinion, I would put those two options/codes at the top of the rare list of options on a Turbo Regal (not the Limited model Turbos). I base this mostly on the 300-plus 1986-1987 Turbo Regals we’ve owned.
One might say in Minnesota the engine block heater was more popular than if you resided in the sunshine state of Florida. If you lived in Florida, ordering the optional rear window defogger would be a waste of money. The SPID code for the engine block heater is “KO5” and was a mere $18. This option can be seen tied up by the edge of the radiator on the passenger’s side, if it’s never been disturbed. The code for the rear defogger is “C49” with a price tag of $145 in 1986.
In most cases, the prices of most of the options did not change between each year - 1984-1987. This may have been because the rear wheel drive platform was being discontinued and Buick wanted to unload as much of their G-body inventory of parts. This is simply my guess.
The power trunk release is just one of the options that would show up with an ID code on the SPID label.
It’s difficult to pin down an exact total of options that was offered each year. One thing is for certain, the list of options today for GM cars is lot larger than it was back then.
One of the more interesting options for each year (1984-1987) was the painted pinstripes option. This is not to be confused with the body side molding options. In the GM price books they are simply called “stripes.” They had 8 stripe options available each year on the T-Types/Turbo-Ts, except for 1986 when they offered 7 varieties.
It was suggested that the stripes should match the top or interior trim color whenever possible. Each year this option carried a $45 price tag. The codes always started with a two-digit number then followed by the letter A. The one lone exception was in 1984 when the black stripes had a code of “B88” available on the T-Type only for obvious reasons. You couldn’t have a black stripe on a black car.
One mistake some owners make when they get their car redone and restriped is they forget that the original stripe stopped in front of and in back of the remote mirrors on both doors. It was not a dual solid stripe across the bottom of the mirrors.
Stripes are nothing new as I can recall them being an option on the GTOs. Some year GTOs had a painted single stripe and some years used a dual painted pinstripes. I would venture a guess and say stripes were offered on the other GM car models as well.
Today taped pinstripes are sometimes a clever trick that some used car dealers use to mask off paintwork or to enhance the appearance of the car they are trying to sell. Dealers seldom, if ever, go with hand painted pinstripes, unless it’s a high dollar used car.
SPID codes will be continued next week.
ONE AREA TECHNOLOGY SEEMS TO LAG BEHIND -
One area where technology seems to lag behind can be seen almost daily. Small school age kids can be seen lugging what must be a 25-35 lb backpack home from school. I usually see these kids as they emerge from their school bus and trudge home. I never remember even owning a school bag or back pack when I was in school.

1984-1987 BUICK TURBO REGAL
CCCI (Computer Controlled Coil Ignition) SensorCheck MODULE
The Computer Controlled Coil Ignition (CCCI) is probably the least-understood system on your Turbo Buick powered vehicle. The most common problem is the “No-Start” condition, and there are very few tests that a car owner is capable of performing to determine a faulty component in this system.
This simple CCCI SensorCheck Module plug-and-play diagnostic tool is designed to troubleshoot your ignition system for the most common “No-Start” scenario. Specifically, it will display a simple LED to indicate the status of the CAM sensor, CRANK sensor, Coil Power and MODULE power. The CAM LED will visibly blink rapidly during idle. The CRANK LED will appear to be continuously on (due to the rapid Crank signal) when the vehicle is running normally. The POWER LED will be illuminated when the MODULE fuse is working. There are 3 LED’s assigned to each model: “HOT AIR” (1984-1985) and Intercooled (1986-1989.)
It can also be used to set the cam sensor!
No CAM signal = No Spark, No Injector pulse
No CRANK signal = No Spark, Only Inj pulse
CAM signal initiates sequential spark. Without it, No spark.
CRANK signal initiates fuel injector pulses.
No Lights, good fuses = Check ECM ground return wire.
This clever device eliminates any guesswork as to why your Turbo Regal won’t start, if it’s related to the cam sensor, crank sensor, coil pack, or coil module.
It comes with easy-to-follow directions. It is all plug-and-play to conduct the tests to determine where the problem is originating. By using LED lights, you can pinpoint where the problem originates.
By a flip of a switch, it works on all 1984 to 1987 Turbo Regals including, the 1989 Turbo Trans Am.
A must-have tool that saves the guesswork when you have a no start situation.

1978-1988 All G-BODY (Including Buick Turbo Regals) -
FLIP-DOWN STAY-DOWN MODIFICATION KIT
TO CONVERT AN ORIGINAL REAR LICENSE PLATE BRACKET
GM used a flip-down stay-down license plate bracket on various other GM cars in the 1980s and 1990s. However, it was never a factory part on a G-body car.
If you’re like me, you hate fighting the heavy spring pressure on the factory license plate bracket when you are filling the gas tank.
The flip-down stay-down bracket has become a popular conversion to put on a G-body car, including the Turbo Regals, since it prevents accidental fuel spillage on the rear fillers. Unfortunately GM does not have any of these flip-down stay-down license plate brackets available and haven’t for years.
We have sold used ones for $25-$28 as fast as I could find them. As each year passes, finding them is getting harder and harder. The factory flip-down stay-down only used a single spring on one of the hinges.
We have designed a modification kit to convert an original rear license plate bracket to a flip-down stay-down license plate. Our new 3-piece modification kit includes 2 brackets and a spring. No holes need to be drilled in the original bracket. It eliminates the 2 factory springs on the existing license plate bracket. Those springs are prone to rust, since they are not stainless. The new spring in our kit is stainless and the 2 brackets are 24-gauge galvanized steel, so the parts will not rust.
The directions are easy-to-follow and include actual photos of the install on our personal Buick Turbo-T.
The end result - There are no rust issues with the new spring and brackets with the flip-down stay-down design along with the convenience of having your hands free to pump the gas. It also eliminates the risk of spilling fuel on the rear fillers. A bargain for under $20.
An excellent upgrade to help avoid gas spills.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
