TOOLS OF THE TRADE -
Most of us have lots of the “tools of the trade” to work on our cars. The skill levels vary from owner to owner, but having tools is the one constant. I have always said my skill level on working on cars is quite limited.
In recent years, I have gotten rather good at removing parts quickly from dead cars and trucks in the various You Pull it yards. One trick I discovered, at my age you don’t want to be burden down in these huge yards with a wide variety of heavy tools. It can tire you quickly, especially in the heat of the summer. There are two tools that I have found quite useful (pictured in Photo 1.)
PHOTO 1 - The photo to the left shows this mini LED work light. This particular Mini LED Work Light is made by Craftsman, but others probably exist. The price is just $5.99. At my age, I need a bright light in order to see under the dashboards to remove brake pedals! They say the 3 small AAA batteries will power the LED lights for 11 hours of continuous run time. It’s tough to beat LED lighting! The photo on the right is one of the best $20 investments I have ever spent. I have three of them. The picture shows the tool with the socket head tilted, but it can also be used straight on. It comes with 19 sockets, 10 SAE, and 9 metric plus 12 assorted screwdriver bits. It even comes with its own little pouch. I cut the plastic holder for screwdriver bits so I can store 2 or 3 sockets I use all the time inside the handle. I have two of them in my stash of tools I take to the yards.
One trick I did - I used some butle tape to secure a Phillips screwdriver bit to a socket so it stays in place. The brand name is Nebo Ultra Socket Tool. Their website is - nebotools.com - in case you can’t find it locally. It’s very well made.
FORDS AT CARLISLE -
One of the major events at Carlisle during the summer is “Fords at Carlisle.” Later this month it will be “GM Nationals at Carlisle.” Ford is one of the huge events at Carlisle. The Mustangs always over shadow the other Ford models. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Ford GT. They had the largest array of Ford GTs I have ever seen in one area inside one of the buildings. Even if you don’t like Fords, I doubt any of you would turn down having one of these Ford GTs as a weekend toy. By the way, Ford does not own the license for GT-40. That’s the reason they are called Ford GTs.
The other popular Ford is, of course, the Carroll Shelby Cobra. There was a vendor that was offering copies of Carroll Shelby’s California 1965 MFG 013 license plate for $75. He claims that if you could locate the original steel one, it is valued at $15,000! That’s just for the license plate with no car attached to it. You may want to keep that in mind if you see someone selling used California black license plates!
PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows just part of the huge Ford display where they actually installed parts on owner’s cars. The top right photo shows Fords 2.0 Ecoboost crate engine. Note the intercooler off to the right side of the engine. The lower left shows a mint 13,000-original-mile 1986 Mustang GT 5-speed that was for sale for just $10,800. From what I saw, this was a bargain for a low-mileage 100% stock Mustang GT. It was a good color combination and a hardtop. The lower right shows a combination I had never seen before - an older Ford Bronco with a fitted pop-up top camper on it. If I recall, it was priced around $12,000.
PHOTO 3 - The top left shows just a small portion of the Ford GTs in the one building. If I had to guess, there were probably over 30 Ford GTs on display. The top right shows a 1985 ASC McLaren Capri for sale. This was a project ASC did prior to the Buick GNX project. This car had one repaint but still needed attention, and was priced at $8,995. The repaint was done years ago and they simply taped off around the ASC decals on the body, which is quite evident! The lower left photo shows one of the best trunk displays I saw on a late 1950s Thunderbird, complete with a real wire wheel spare tire. The lower right shows the same Thunderbird artwork on a mirror panel under the hood. The chrome work on the engine compartment and engine was absolutely stunning.
BARN FINDS -
Barn finds seems to be the hot ticket today with more and more showing up at major swap meets. There are more articles written about them in magazines. I would venture a guess and say someday some of the car museums will start to have a section devoted to “untouched” barn finds.
Another term for barn finds would be “neglected cars!” Long-time readers know we have sold several Turbo Regals that were barn finds. One Grand National we bought had been peed on by a family of cats for many years.
I personally know of a car that is within 30 minutes of our house that has been sitting for over 25-30 years in a barn that the owner has turned down close to one million US dollars. (I drove this car when I was a teenager). I’ve been offered big money if I can convince the seller to sell it.
I remember years ago, in my old neighborhood, passing an original Avanti that sat with 4 flat tires for over 20 years on a driveway in a very nice neighborhood. I can only guess how many people must have stopped and asked if the car was for sale.
For every “barn find” that proves to be a car of great value if its restored, there are many more that are not worth the cost it would be to move it from its location.
Years ago I would buy cars that were not very popular but were near mint examples. One such car was a 1964 Sunbeam Alpine with the optional hardtop. It was a very solid car. I never really drove it much and it just sat in one of our garages. If you know anything about the Sunbeam Alpine, you know tht later they came out with the Sunbeam Tiger, which was fitted with a 260 Ford V8 engine. Production ran from 1964 through around 1967, then they stepped up to the 289 V8 Ford engine.
At the Fords at Carlisle there was a barn find of a 1964-1965 Sunbeam Tiger. It was pulled from a barn just prior to Carlisle. The description claims all the parts are included, even though they are currently not in the car.
PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows the Sunbeam Tiger barn find. The top right shows another view of the Sunbeam Tiger, complete with the hardtop. The lower left photo shows the steering shaft. This shaft is very similar to the upgraded refurbished one we sell today, featuring metal universal joints at both ends! The Sunbeam Tiger barn find had a steep price tag of $18,000! This would be quite a project to bring back to showroom condition. The lower right photo shows the 1964 blue Sunbeam Alpine we had about 20 years ago. Ironically, since we moved, I actually pass the house that I bought it from every day on the way to work. A true story.

TWO CHOICE WORDS -
I spotted this on a late-model Cadillac Hearse - a decal on the windshield that read, "TIMES UP."
I don't believe it’s a vehicle still in daily service, although humor can be a welcome relief in some aspects.
CAR CRAFT AUGUST 2015 ISSUE -
Car Craft August 2015 issue has a nice 5-page spread on redoing a 1983 Buick T-Type Regal. The students at Burlington County Institute of Technology in Medford, New Jersey did the project.
Congrats to Brian Weaver of GBodyparts.com for providing several of the important parts they needed for the project. He also provided them with a 1984-1987 header panel, so the filler panels would fit properly. They also installed fender flares, so they can put mount wider size tires. I am not sure what engine they plan to use.

1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CONVERSION VACUUM BRAKE BOOSTER KIT with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal
This is another option to consider if you have a fairly stock 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal and want to switch from the original powermaster brake system.
This kit comes complete with everything you need as shown. This kit is very similar to Part #7625 however, it does not include a factory vacuum brake pedal. Instead we include a correct size machined pin that needs to be welded to the original stock brake pedal. Directions showing proper measurements comes with it, so this machined pin can be done by a welder on the original brake pedal rod.
It comes with a REBUILT Cardone brake booster and a BRAND new master cylinder. The booster has a 9" diameter. The master cylinder and vacuum booster in this kit are exactly what GM used in 1986-1987 on a non-Turbo Regal application.
There are no clearance issues with this unit and the stock remote power steering reservoir.
It also comes with our new vacuum block with gasket and hardware. It has the vacuum port similar to what GM used on the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. We also include 2 feet of vacuum hose and our new reproduction gasket to firewall.
This booster kit uses the same factory holes in the firewall as the powermaster.
Since nothing gets cut or drilled related to the original powermaster, the original powermaster can be re-used should you want to convert back to the factory set up at a later date. However, you would need to acquire a brake pedal for a Turbo Regal to have it function properly.
We highly recommend installation be done by a qualified mechanic, since you have to properly bleed the brakes and need to weld the new brake pedal pin to the factory pedal rod. You also have to cut off the original pin from the brake pedal rod. Make sure the system is operating properly under all conditions.
Remember, your best option is always to stay with the factory GM powermaster brake system. This unit is only to be used with a stock or a fairly stock Turbo Regal. A modified engine or one with a performance cam would cause vacuum levels to be greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems. One possible solution would be to purchase an additional vacuum canister to retain proper vacuum levels from Summit or Jegs.
When purchasing this kit, you may also want to purchase Part #7218, Stainless Braided Brake Hoses, as these will improve the stopping ability.
For our rebuilt powermaster brake unit, See our Part #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.
However, if you have a STOCK engine, there is adequate vacuum to switch over to a vacuum brake system. We have another option: Our Part #7625 - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with vacuum brake pedal.
The difference between #7625 and this kit #7679, is that this kit comes with the correct pin instead of a vacuum brake pedal.
NOTE - A vacuum brake system is NOT recommended for a Turbo Regal with a modified engine or one with a performance cam because vacuum levels are greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems.
NOTE - Be sure to check out the other options we offer for converting the Turbo Regal brake system - Part #7625 Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with Vacuum Brake Pedal, Part #7617 Hydro-Boost Conversion Kit, or #7618 HYDRATECH Hydro-Boost System conversion. Related parts to consider are #7218 Stainless Braided Brake Hoses and #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.
NOTE - We recommend installation be done by a qualified auto mechanic. Welding is required.
7679 - 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal - $329.95

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CUSTOM-MADE DRIVER’S SIDE POWDER-COATED BLACK RELAY COVER
The part GM forgot... This 1986-1987 Turbo Regal custom-made driver's side powder-coated black relay cover is cut exactly like the cover GM used on the passenger's side fender that shields the relays from moisture.
Although GM never made one, we have had this custom-made as a matching cover for the driver's side relays... this cover is a must for covering these three relays. Remember, moisture can cause critical failure of the fan delay relay and eventually kill the battery since the fan delay relay is wired directly to the battery. The fan delay relay is not a sealed unit, so anything you can do to keep moisture out of the unit is important.
Once installed this custom-made cover looks factory. The relay cover is powdered-coated in satin black to closely match the relay cover on the passenger’s side inner fender. Cover is easy to install and comes complete with two mounting screws.
NOTE - These covers will NOT fit a GNX.
Another nice item to enhance your engine compartment.

1984-1987 Buick Regal -
Reproduction 3-PIECE and 1-PIECE REAR SPOILERS
These reproduction 3-Piece and 1-Piece Rear Spoilers fit all two-door Regal models from 1984 through the 1987 Regal models, including all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals.
These reproduction spoilers are made by Spoolfool Productions, which also makes the popular one-piece rear fillers and two-piece front fillers. The same high quality can be seen in these two versions of rear spoilers, which are made in the USA using hand laid fiberglass in gloss black gelcoat. Due to the nature of these materials, small imperfections; pits, scratches, air bubbles, etc. are to be expected and are normal for this type of product.
The gelcoat is meant to be painted over, however, many customers are happy with the way they look right out of the box.
Each spoiler comes with mounting screws.
Spoilers are ready to install. Some holes may need to be slightly elongated, as every car is unique from the factory.
The three-piece rear spoiler is an exact match to the original GM Grand National rear spoiler.
The one-piece rear spoiler simply attaches to the trunk lid and over laps both of the rear quarter panel corners. This is similar to the Monte Carlo factory rear deck spoiler.
We also have another 1984-1987 Regal - Reproduction Fiberglass 3-piece Rear Spoiler, #6694

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
