05-31-2017 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 05-31-2017 -

16 HOURS ROUND TRIP-12 OF WHICH IN THE RAIN -

I just drove a total of 16 hours to go buy the 1987 Turbo-T that we mentioned in last week’s Inner Circle. The car inside and out looked quite nice. It needed a headliner which I knew about. Due to a repaint it, needed both door jamb decals. Being garage kept, the interior was quite nice showing no rips or signs of fading. It had a straight body, and the nice factory wheels had all the center caps intact. The AC blew cold and even the power antenna worked. Car has a G80 code for posi, and had the aluminum front and rear bumper supports. Car has the analog dash tilt, cruise, black-out package, and power windows. The car has other options as well, but those are the ones I remember.

Motor was fairly clean and still had all the factory intercooler hoses. The hood pad had been replaced and looked good. The powermaster had the Cardone brake bowl. All the glove box booklets and Window Sticker was with the car. Car had never been smoked in and was still in the original owner’s possession.

An issue became evident once I took a short blast down the street. The car ran strong, transmission shifted nice and it was virtually rattle free. Upon my return from this quick test drive, I smelled anti-freeze. It turns out anti-freeze was seeping out the front of the intake manifold.

Not being a mechanic and not anticipating another cost, I decided to pass on the purchase. The car is a good deal for a buyer that was going to buy it and keep it. The owner was disappointed and said he would get the antifreeze leak fixed.

I told him at this point, keep me posted and I would try and sell the car for him once the problem was fixed.

A lot has changed since I was buying these cars on a fairly regular basis 15-20 years ago. Once in awhile, I would hit a snag and either pass on the car or the person had to adjust the price.

Watch for updates as the owner has contacted me and has arranged to have the intake leak fixed.

PHOTO 1 - On that 16-hour road trip, on one of my stops in New York, I spotted this Ford Ranger pickup truck that was at least 4 years newer than my 1996 Ford Ranger. The 4 photos show the truck and both sides of the remaining metal panels of the pickup bed over the rear wheels. Winters in New York can be extremely devastating to vehicles that are neglected and driven. I can only imagine how the frame, springs and shocks, must look like on this Ford Ranger. Perhaps more important is the question “Just what is still securing the bed to the frame?”

BREAKING NEWS ON THAT TURBO-T FOR SALE -

The seller called me today and the car has been fixed. A new intake gasket was installed and fresh oil was put in. There was no antifreeze in the oil. Leak was because of loose intake bolt.

The car has been repainted. A nice example at a fair price.

Car can be bought for $10,500. It is located at the far northeast corner of Pennsylvania almost within walking distance of New York, above Erie, PA. If you are interested and would like more information and the owner’s phone number - email me [email protected]  Car has been repainted. A nice example at a fair price.

TURBO REGAL WINDOW RATTLE ISSUES -

I am fairly certain that for any 1984-1987 Turbo Regal owner that has the power window option, window rattle issues would be in their top five complaints. Window rattle issues were even evident back when our cars were just a few years old. Hand crank windows don’t seem to have the same problems. It has never been an issue in my Turbo-T with manual hand crank windows. The problem is not just with our cars, but all the G-body models with the power window option. I speak from experience as we supply several other companies with our window rattle kits as the Pete Serio book wrote on the subject for us several years ago.

Now with the cars being over 30 years old or more, the window issues even become more pronounced, if they have never been repaired. The combination of a slow power window motor, massive door frame, and loose suspension is a combination that spells trouble for getting a good seal with the door window.

It also remains one project that many owners do not want to tackle on their own. Pete Hoffman does work on these issues, mostly down at Richard Clark’s Garage in Burlington, NC. He also has done them in years past at various Buick meets. He learned the trade from Pete Serio who did the window repairs originally for us. Pete Serio came by this knowledge from working at a GM dealership when these cars were new. Pete’s specialty at the dealership were issues related to water leaks and warranty problems.

While it may be common knowledge to know that water always runs downhill, the smartest mechanic is the one that can locate the exact entrance point and fix it! Because of my limited skill, I would be drilling a hole in the floor so the water could find an exit point!

Part of window rattle issues is related to the plastic bracket for the window guide. It is a plastic part that is riveted to the actual door glass and a pin seats in it when the window is fully closed.

PHOTO 2 - The photo to the left shows a broken plastic window guide that was on a door glass that Pete Hoffman was working on recently at Richard Clark’s Garage. This is an extreme example showing that the entire side of the window guide has broken clean off. The photo to the right shows the new reproduction plastic window guide that is one the parts included in the window rattle kit we sell. This would then be attached to the door glass. Our Window Rattle Elimination Kit, part #7170, includes this part.

You would need 2 Window Rattle Kits to do both door windows. Pete Serio’s book is part #6739 entitled, “How to Eliminate Window Rattle and Wind Noise.” The book is a must-have book, if you plan to attempt the project yourself.

Depending on your location to Richard Clark’s garage or to where Pete Hoffman lives, you can email him - [email protected] - to arrange a possible appointment to have your window issues resolved.

PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows Pete Hoffman being aided by John Follweiler doing a window rattle repair on a customer’s car at Richard Clark’s Garage at the recent Richard Clark/NC Turbo Buick Nats earlier this month. John Follweiler makes many of the unique gaskets for the Turbo Regals that most of us vendors sell. The photo to the right is probably from 20 years ago when the original window rattle guy, Pete Serio, was at our old house doing window repairs. Assisting him is my Dad. I think my Dad was there to give Pete encouragement rather than actual help. The recent photo of Pete Hoffman and John Follweiler made me remember that I had this similar photo from many years ago.

EXAMPLE OF ANOTHER TURBO CAR I PASSED ON BUYING -

Probably 12-15 years ago I made a deal to buy a 1987 Grand National from a person in Maryland. The car had a fairly-fresh repaint on it and the seller had purchased it recently from a car dealer. Maryland is a short trip from my location so I made a quick arrangement to go buy the Grand National.

After looking over the car, I took it on a quick test drive around the owner’s neighborhood.
I was puzzled because every time I made a right hand turn I heard what appeared to be one of the front tires rubbing the inner fender. When I made left hand turns, I heard nothing.

Other than that, the car seemed like a solid deal. I have a rule that I never turn over the check to the seller until I have the car I am buying on my trailer. That way it gives me one more time to look over the car from different angles and at a different height level too.

Once I had the Grand National on my trailer I quickly noticed that one front tire was closer to the
fender opening than the other front tire. I did not have a ruler with me, but having 5 fingers to measure, the end result was the same. One side I could fit 4 fingers from the tire tread to the fender and the other side barely 3 fingers. Looking further into this issue, I then discovered that the front frame rails lacked the factory slots for my GM brackets that I use to strap the cars down on my trailer. I had never seen this before, where the frame had no existing slots. At this point I informed the seller that I was not going to buy his Grand National.

I asked him did he ever have anyone follow him with another car. I figured this would have told him the car had at the very least some alignment issues. He said he had not done this. I explained my findings and showed him the two major issues I had seen with his Grand National. I then backed the car off my trailer and went home without the Grand National. I wonder what ever happen to that Grand National. The car fax was clean, yet the car in my opinion, had some serious issues between the body and the frame.

The point of this story is make sure you look over the car you are considering buying carefully, and if you are picking it up with a trailer, make that the final inspection point before making payment to the seller. I been fortunate and have only been burned two or three times that I can remember out of over 320 purchases. I consider that pretty good odds. Muscle cars of any type require careful attention, especially ones that have gone through multiple owners.

BREAKING NEWS ON REPRODUCTION GNX WHEELS -

We have just been informed that the 1984-1987 Regal - GNX / TRANS AM STYLE 16″ x 8″ Wheels (4) Set, part #7219, are available again. Our supplier has just informed us that the offset we been buying is now back in stock. A few months back they had run out of the offset we buy. This is a nice upgrade on any Turbo Regal, not just a Grand National.

Here is a link to these wheels on our website.

UPDATE ON THE 1986-1987 TURBO REGAL UPGRADED ALUMINUM RADIATOR -

Max Performance will not be getting more of these new radiators until late July. As I write this we may have 1 or 2 left. If you want one when they are available again in late July you must call our office and reserve one with Christina 215-766-1611x 0. We would not charge your credit card until we can ship the unit. She would also contact you once they are available.

These are by far the best radiator for the money for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal application. Simply put this is a very nice unit with a price that can’t be beat. In some cases, it’s probably almost that much to repair your original radiator, which weighs 10 pounds more and would required major flushing to clean out the transmission and oil coolers.

Here is a link to this radiator on our website.

GRAND NATIONAL EMBROIDERED HEAD REST COVERS -

Many of you may not know exactly what these special embroidered headrest covers look like. Years ago, I believe it was Bowling Green Customs that made these using the original black pallex material. They have the zipper on the bottom. These would replace the power six logo ones that are your original headrest covers. See part #2641 in the Rare Parts section in this issue.

PHOTO 4 - Here we show the actual pair of embroidered Grand National headrest covers we have for sale. See Rare Parts section for price.

MINI CONTEST ON A NEW REPRODUCTION PART WE WILL SOON BE MAKING -

The other week Russ, who is in the midst of restoring a Grand National, brought me a bracket to see about getting it reproduced. For some reason, GM made this original bracket out of plastic. Over a period of time in the engine compartment it will probably break.

I figured I would make a mini contest out of this to our readers. Submit one guess only to my email - [email protected] - with your guess as to what plastic bracket under the hood I am referring to. Chances are this plastic bracket on your Turbo Regal may be broken as well. It is broken on my personal 1987 Turbo-T.

Here are the clues:

This bracket is under the hood on the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regals. It may be also on the 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regals. It is only a few inches long and is secured by two small screws.

Each of the first 3 people with the correct answer will be awarded one of the aluminum reproductions once we have them available. This contest ends this Friday, June 2nd, 6 pm eastern time. You get 1 guess only. Our reproduction bracket will be made in aluminum and will retail for less than $15.

CHECK OUT THIS SOLUTION FROM ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS -

Last week I heard several times from one of our southern customers about installing the reproduction grommet for the PCV valve. One of his first calls, said he had already lost two PCV grommets that fell onto the intake manifold never to be seen again. He was seeking a solution on how to retrieve them. Apparently, profanity alone was not working for him. I suggested using air from an air compressor and blowing them out from under the intake manifold.

His second call was asking what was the best method for installing the PCV grommet?

I said from what I heard, he should use some lubricant on it and work it into position. He said he tried that but had no luck.

His third call to me was how he solved the problem on installing the PCV grommet. He used a ceramic coffee mug, filled it with water, put the PCV grommet in the coffee mug, and micro waved it for 2 minutes. Then using some sort of pliers due how hot the PCV grommet got, he then applied some lubricant to the grommet and presto - the installation went perfect.

So, this may be another solution to making a rubber grommet fit in a tight space. We can all relate with the problem of dropping a part or a tool and never seeing it again. I have lost several sockets in the cars in junkyards. They seldom, if ever, hit the ground.

TWO NEW PARTS FROM US -

See the New Parts section for more details and link to our website on these 2 new parts. We now carry the Fel-Pro Head bolt (16) set. We also now offer the GM correct-looking black wiper blades. As we noted last week, the correct size in silver appears is not available from any source. That would be the correct wiper blade for any 1987 Turbo-T like mine that has the chrome package instead of the blackout option.

1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

One of our Virginia customers is selling his Dad’s original 34,508-mile Grand National. It has been family owned since new. Car has been garage kept and covered its entire life. Car has T-Tops, power windows, rear defroster, manual door locks, AM/FM radio, Kenne Bell stainless exhaust, upgraded turbo hoses, and R34 in the AC unit.

The SPID trunk ID label has been personally autographed by Molly at Kirban’s Reunion event in 2007. All maintenance records are available. Car is located in northern Virginia. The price is $25,000. Call George at 703-999-9536 for more information and photos.

Here is the link to this car on our website:

VALVE COVER LAMP UPDATE -

We appreciate your patience on the valve cover lamp information. My source, who owns the company across from our warehouse, is hoping to find the time to make them next week. This is something he needs to do off hours as time permits.

We actually looked on another website and see where some artists get over $300 for custom valve cover desk lamps. I am hoping to find some of the older V8 muscle car valve covers to make other desk top lamps now that my supplier has his method on making them sorted out. I hope to take at least one valve cover lamp with me to the seminar I am conducting at Castle’s place in Lemont, Illinois the end of June.

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

This week’s tip is related to my story about buying a used Turbo Regal. It can be a real challenge as the years generally are not kind to these cars, either because of the weather or owners pushing them to the limits. Take your time to locate the cars that have not been advertised very long.

If a car has been advertised a long time it is usually either priced too high, or have issues that have turned up. Exceptions to this rule would be the nice low-mileage examples. Sometimes it’s better to go over your allotted budget, for a nice original low mileage cars, since the returns in value can only increase as time goes on.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

Paul has recently informed me that he will give everyone that brings a Turbo Regal to this event a FREE Silver Billet T-shirt. I will also be doing a mini No Reserve auction! This is a rare opportunity to hear one of my seminars in your area. Since I am speaking on Hurst later that week at the GTOAA National meet, I will also show you some of the very rare Hurst items and artwork that I have in my collection.

The location is Castle Performance, 220 River Street, Lemont, Illinois. Since I will be in Illinois as a speaker later that week I have arranged with Paul Castle and the local Buick GS Club to coordinate this event. Free pizza and drinks courtesy of the Chicagoland Chapter of the GSCA Club!

We will have a special gift for all attendees! Hope to see many of my Illinois customers there.

Paul and the local GS Club request you bring a lawn chair. Food and drinks will be provided. If you reside anywhere near Lemont, Illinois, we hope you can attend and bring your Turbo Regal. UPGRADED ALUMINUM RADIATOR

Because of the age of these cars, the radiator has lost some of its efficency. Also the factory core size is marginal at best.

These upgraded radiators are 100% brand new, and made by COLD-CASE, a division of Max Performance, who also owns Pypes Exhaust.

This new radiator is bare aluminum. It has two 1" tubes, which are bigger than stock. The core size is 1/4" wider and the end tanks are 1/4" wider.

This radiator has undergone several months of testing by Nick Micale in his car in Arizona.
The original radiator weighs 25.6 lbs, this radiator weighs 15.2 lbs. The overall weigh savings over the stock radiator is about 10 lbs.

This upgraded radiator is designed so it fits exactly like the factory radiator and accepts all the factory original oil and transmission coolant fittings. The factory radiator cap will also fit this radiator. The reproduction radiator top plate and the custom top plate will also fit.

Our first photo shows this new upgraded aluminum radiator. Our other photos show a comparison views of an original radiator and this new aluminum radiator.

NOTE - If you plan to paint the radiator, we highly recommend Eastwood’s Radiator Black 12 oz Satin Finish, part #10340Z @ $12.99 per can. A typical radiator requires 2 coats of paint. Normal engine paints are too thick for radiator use, which will interfere with heat transfer and block air flow over the cooling fins. Also, standard paint tends to flake off metal radiator tanks. The Radiator Black is specially formulated to solve these problems, will not interfere with heat transfer, and is heat resistant to 300°F.

NOTE - Shipping cost is based on an oversized package.

Another nice engine restoration item.

CUSTOM RADIATOR TOP PLATE & HARDWARE

In many cases, the original metal radiator top plate that holds the top of the radiator and secures the housing for the electric fan may be rusted or bent.

This radiator top plate is unique to the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals, making it difficult to find a nice used one today.

This radiator top plate is made by Spoolfool but does not look like the stock original steel radiator top plate. It is fiberglass and not metal. It attaches the same way, however the top surface is smooth. This gives it a more custom look.

Each one is done in black gelcoat polished to a high gloss shine. It weighs only 1 pound versus 3 pounds for the metal plate. It saves a small amount of weight, but more importantly, it will never rust!

It comes with 5 powder-coated black bolts, which are the correct size for this plate, and easy-to-follow directions.

NOTE - Our first picture show this new CUSTOM Radiator Top Plate and Hardware, #7776. Our second photo shows the stock Reproduction Radiator Top Plate & Hardware, #7774. The second photo also shows the placement of this plate in the lower photos.

A nice finishing touch for under the hood.

When new, the valve has a gold anodized look. Over time, the unit corrodes and could leak anti-freeze. Aftermarket valves do not look original since they are made in plastic.

It’s a good idea to replace this valve to avoid any leakage problems.

Another excellent replacement for the engine compartment.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
