COLLECTING DIECAST CARS UPDATE -
Recently I discovered a 1:43 scale diecast Grand National for sale. It seems to be only available from sources located outside of the USA. I ordered 2 of them from a source in England.
Once I received the 2 I ordered, I saw the name of the company on the package. The box says “Auto World.” I went on Auto World’s website (AutoWorldHobby.com) and they don’t even have a listing for any 1:43 scale diecast cars. This may have been made under a sub division of Auto World. It also says on the box that it was GM licensed through Round 2 LLC AW Auto World. I can’t find any reference to Round 2 on the internet related to this particular 1:43 diecast scale Grand National model. On the underside of the diecast Grand National, the date says 2013.
Regardless of who had it produced and when, it seems to be rather scarce to find today. I bought two of them and have one listed for sale under Rare Parts.
In one of the statements on the package it says, “Incredible Accuracy.” The base that the diecast Grand National is attached to says it is a “1985 Buick Grand National.” As for accuracy, I detected two glaring mistakes.
PHOTO 1 – We show the Auto World 1985 Buick Grand National both out of the display and one still in the original display packaging. The two glaring mistakes are - the diecast shows a third brake light in the back window, which did not appear until the 1986 models. The other mistake, which may not be detectable in the photo, is that the Grand National emblem on the driver’s side fender is backwards! Other than those mistakes, the detail is quite good with the black and grey bucket seats, the seat belts, steering wheel, and the basic dash layout.
REPRODUCTION 1986-1987 GRAND NATIONAL GREY FRONT SEAT BELTS –
A few years ago, we used to carry these GM licensed 1986-1987 Grand National grey front seat belt sets. The supplier contacted us and said they had 4 sets left. We bought them.
Here are the specifications: These have been assembled and tested in the U.S.A. They meet SAE-J386 and FMVSS 209-302 specs, according the label on the back of each seat belt. They also have a production date on the belt label. The company that made them tested them on a “G” force Machine, a Tilt Lock Testing machine, and webbing Abrasion Tester. They also did a Salt Spray test, two Tensile Machines and other testing equipment. All this testing meets the most current FMVSS 209/302 certification.
These seat belts are a slightly lighter grey color than the factory grey on the 1986-1987 Grand Nationals. We have 4 pairs available. Each pair does both front bucket seats. The part that attaches to the roof line is slightly different than the original one. The inner seat belt does not have the black plastic shell on it. The seat belt does come with a grey cover that hides the mounting point on the outer belt. You may be able to reinstall the black plastic shell on the new inner seat belt.
The inner belt on the buckle does have the GM embossed logo, which is similar to the original GM logo.
You must call our office 215-766-1611 x 0 to order if you want one of these remaining sets of the reproduction grey seat belts. The price is $249.95 plus $15 shipping to the basic 48 states.
PHOTO 2 – We show several views of the reproduction GM licensed, tested grey front bucket seat belts. In one of the photos we show the original inner seat belt alongside the reproduction inner seat belt so you can see the difference in the GM logo and color. To my knowledge, nobody has reproduced a 100% correct-looking seat belt for the Grand Nationals.
PUTTING YOUR SIGNATURE ON YOUR WORK –
In recent years on some of the high-end muscle cars we are starting to see a special nameplate on the front of some of the engines. Ford has done this for several years in their Cobra models. At the car show last week I spotted two other examples.
PHOTO 3 – The photo to the top left shows the engine in this GTR and the photo to the top right shows a close-up of the signature nameplate of who built the engine. The bottom left photo shows a close-up of an AMG Mercedes engine and the photo to the lower right shows the nameplate of who built the engine.
Seeing this reminded me of our Reunion events when we had Molly attend and sign the SPID trunk ID label for Turbo Regal owners. Looking back on those memories, it makes you realize how lucky those owners are to have his signature on their car.
After John DeLorean retired, he retired lived in nearby New Jersey. Had I known, I would have invited him to come to our early Reunion Events. GTO owners missed a great opportunity to get his autograph on one of his greatest accomplishments under his watch - the Pontiac GTO.
REPORT FROM SPRING CARLISLE –
Although I did not go to Spring Carlisle this past time, Jim Wilson (one of our long-time customers) did go. He did purchase a 1987 Buick Dealer Album for $40 that was missing a few tabs. He did see a 1985 Grand National with 93,000 miles in average or slightly below average condition with a $12,000 price tag.
Some of the unusual items Jim spotted for sale can be seen in the next photo. One was an airplane partially disassembled and taking the top prize for weirdness a Stingray Corvette that was completely covered in pennies. I have no idea of the reasoning behind doing this custom look but it is probably one-of-a-kind. My question would be, how many pennies were used to create this masterpiece or (in my opinion) how many pennies were used to ruin this vintage Corvette?
PHOTO 4 – The photo to the left shows the airplane that was for sale at Spring Carlisle. This would make a cool lawn ornament! The photo to the right shows the Corvette. At least the Corvette owner will never be penniless! I have no idea what the price tag was on the Corvette. If I was a buyer, my biggest questions would be what is the cost involved to remove all the pennies and not damage the original body panels?
SPEAKING OF ENGLAND –
We recently heard from Ian Reeves. In 1997, he flew over from England with his buddy Steve and bought a Grand National from us. He and Steve are pictured on page 10 in my Kirban’s Guide to 1986 and 1987 Buick Turbo Regals.
Ian still owns the Grand National he purchased from me in 1997. He says now, at most, in England there is only one Grand National that knows of plus a real GNX.
He says there used to be 8 Grand Nationals in England several years ago. He says Mustangs are popular because you can buy them with right hand drive. He has even spotted some Hell Cats and Demons at car shows. Corvettes and Camaros are quite popular.
He and his wife Helen are still waiting for their written invitation to see the new Royal baby, Archie!
So, next time you think parts are hard to get in the USA for your Grand National, remember in the UK the situation is a lot tougher!
UPDATE CATALYTIC CONVERTER TEST PIPE AND 4-BOLT FLANGE GASKET –
As I write this week’s Inner Circle we are either completely out of test pipes or, at best, only have 1 or 2 left. It’s best to call prior to placing your order. If it is not on the website as part #7422, then they are sold out.
HOT TIP REGARDING WHAT WATER HOSE TO BUY FOR OUTDOOR USE –
In recent years, the accordion type of cloth fabric water hoses have become quite popular and are easy to use compared to the hard rubber hoses we used for many years. The problem is with many of these cloth accordion water hoses, it seems at best you get 2-3 weeks of use out of them before they spring a leak, or get a bubble in them.
Although a little more money over the accordion cloth ones, they do make accordion style flex steel ones that don’t rust in various lengths of 50 feet or more. They are the ones to buy as they seem to last. Walmart has them for under $40 for a 50-foot hose. The steel hose is just as easy to roll up like the accordion cloth ones.
GNX #206 FOR SALE –
We are selling GNX #206 for one of our long-time customers. While several GNXs can be found for sale on the internet, what separates this one from the pack is not only does it have the GNX book and GNX jacket but the trunk is full of everything associated with a GNX and all the documents back to the original owner in 1988. It is a 2-owner car. This GNX has never been advertised since the current owner purchased it in 1998.
It has been garaged with the wheels off the ground. Even the steering wheel was covered. Most unusual is that the little rubber bumpers are on both doors that came on the car when it was shipped is still on the car! I did not count them but Molly’s signature appears on a dozen or more items, including the GNX jacket. Car has 100% original paint and 100% stock. Front and rear fillers have just been replaced in the last 30 days.
The car still smells factory new. Mileage is 23,839 and original. Car has the latest PA inspection. It’s close to 100% perfect in every regard. The factory paint is outstanding, a term you seldom see used on a black Regal of any version. The price tag is $99,900. To help ease the pain, since I hold a license, I am open to consider any car or cars in partial trade. Trade value cuts down the sales tax bite and out-of-pocket money. Remember, a partial trade car need not be a Turbo Regal. It can even be more than one car. Buying this example eliminates any surprises that some of the other GNXs seem to have that are for sale. This GNX is one that can only advance in value. You can email me for more photos. My email is [email protected]
NEW PRODUCT COMING DESIGNED FOR JEEP OFF-ROADING –
A local company has patented a clever new product and we are the marketing agent for this new product. Jeeps are well known for having over heating issues especially when used to pull a trailer or to go off-roading.
Until now the solution has been to install lovers or vents in the hood to let the heat escape. The problem with this is the vents are open all the time. So, when it rains water gets under the hood and can cause issues with the electronics under the hood.
This company has developed a vent system that is heat activated so the vents close automatically when the engine is cooled down. No wiring is involved. The vent system is flush mounted on the hood of any Jeep and can be painted. The vent system is made from 6061 T aluminum.
In the next several months we will be approaching various Jeep companies about this new product. This clever product will be on display at our Open House. The Jeep off road market is huge. This product can be adapted to virtually any flat hood to allow heat out of the engine compartment. Email me [email protected] for more details and photos.

TIP FROM KIRBAN –
If you own a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, you have two test leads taped up behind the alternator. Make sure they are secure because they can short out if they touch the exhaust manifold. Do NOT connect them to each other.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
