Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 05-25-2016 -
THANK YOU ALL -
Thank you all for your nice emails you sent me regarding Eileen and her bout with kidney stones. We appreciate all the nice notes we got. Everything went well. I just hope it’s not my turn next!
TURBO REGAL / RICHARD CLARK 2016 EVENT -
If you recall, last week we were not able to post the photos because Eileen was laid up with kidney stones. Below is the information and photos that would have appeared in last week’s Inner Circle.
Nobody will confuse North Carolina as being the sunshine state. It rained constantly on the main day, Thursday. It did not curb the enthusiasm as the people still came. Friday was almost a repeat of Thursday with rain, only not constant.
Saturday was a picture perfect day at the track. Unfortunately, I had already headed home.
I had the honor at the Thursday luncheon to introduce Bobby Allison to the crowd. He told some great stories from his past. He even drove his wife’s 1986 Grand National to the event. I am told that his wife’s 1986 Grand National is for sale. I believe they are the second owner. The car is extremely nice and Richard has worked on the car for Bobby over the years. I will try and find out more details and pricing on Bobby Allison’s wife’s Grand National.
I also did all the introductions of the speakers at the Friday night seminar. I’m sure those that came to the event went home with many ideas on what to do with their Turbo Regal.
I was impressed with the number of pristine cars I saw. Even the heavily-modified cars were very well built. Years ago you would see cars that were basically hacked up to be race cars with fender dumps or gauges mounted on the hood.
GIFT FOR RICHARD CLARK-
At the Thursday luncheon I present Richard Clark a lighted sign for his garage. It featured the cartoon figure we have used in the past with 9 different sayings.
PHOTO 1 - The photo to the left shows the LED lighted sign we gave Richard. The photo to the right shows Bobby Allison and Richard Clark.
Below is the wording that was on the sign we made for Richard Clark as a small token of saying “Thanks” for all he does for the Turbo Buick community.

WANTED: Volunteers to stand in front of Turbo Regals to test Powermaster Brake Systems. Must be quick on your feet!
PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows me introducing Bobby Allison to the luncheon crowd. The other three photos show a portion of the Richard Clark Turbo Regal graveyard that sits behind his shop. Everything from a rare 1983 Regal T-Type to a 1986 LeSabre Grand National, besides about 30 or more Turbo Regals mostly Grand Nationals. A few that were hit so hard you know the driver could not have survived the impact. Richard would buy these cars from insurance auctions years ago and now they simply take root at the RC estate.
One of the GNXs that Richard owns is in hibernation on a lift in the rear building. I think it has less than 20 actual miles on it. In the first picture in Photo 3 you can clearly see how the factory GM rear filler has clouded over to a very light grey in color. For whatever reason, the fillers (especially black ones) have some sort of reaction to being stored in doors. They take on a haze that returns almost instantly when the car is put in storage. It even happens on other colors as well, just not as visible as it is on a black car.
PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows the driver’s side rear quarter area of Richard’s low-mileage original GNX. You can clearly see how the filler has turned light grey in color. The top right photo shows one of the best looking engine compartments I saw that week. The amount of fabrication work showed a real passion and skill level. The bottom left photo shows a custom gauge package that this owner mounted above the upper portion of this main dash cluster. The bottom right photo shows one-of-a-kind embroidery work on the factory headrest that reads, “EXECUTIONER.”
PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows my old test car #3 that has been freshly repainted. The motor has been rebuilt and is soon to be installed. This was the rare dark blue with matching blue interior and the black-out package. It was the very first Turbo-T to get Richard Clark’s reproduction GNX suspension. The top right photo shows one of the neat new products sold by Castle Performance out of Chicago area. It’s made from a thin piece of aluminum with a foam backing, and it replaces the hard-to-find hood pad. He has several versions available. A great idea, since the rodents have no taste for aluminum! The bottom left shows another rare color T-Type, light blue with a matching blue interior. This is extremely rare as it was a 1986 model. The bottom right photo shows the Dyno screen for Richard’s Dyno, which was being used all day long for various testing and tuning. Cal Hartline was kept very busy tuning customer’s cars.
JUST A REMINDER ON THE NEW REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM BRAKE DRUMS -
The price structure is now set for the new upcoming aluminum drums. By ordering now (pre-delivery) at $199.95 you are saving over $35 and saving the shipping charges. Once they are in stock the retail price will be around $235 per set plus shipping. We are making them available to the entire muscle car industry since they are also correct for most A-body and F-body applications, plus the other G-body cars such as the Oldsmobile 442, Hurst Olds, and the Monte Carlo SS models. These are not on our website, so you must call our office 215-766-1611 ask for Christina to place your order with your credit card.
MORE INFORMATION ON USAGE OF ALUMINUM BRAKE DRUMS -
We heard from Chris Tobie who worked at a Buick/Pontiac GM dealership during those years and owns a 1987 Turbo-T. According to him, the non-posi cars received aluminum brake drums. He recalls back then that only steel ones were service parts. Meaning, if a car came in and needed brake drums even if the car had aluminum ones, they replaced them with the steel ones. If a car did not get a posi, it makes sense that by installing aluminum brake drums on that car it reduces the weight even more, which delivers better gas mileage.
Remember, GM is focused on meeting EPA requirements, not focused to create a lighter car that would be quicker. That was a secondary consideration. GM wanted to sell more fully-optioned Grand Nationals to increase their profits. We don’t know if it was a hard and fast rule that all non-posi Turbo Regals received aluminum brake drums when delivered. Substitutions could certainly happen if parts were not readily available when the car came down the assembly line.
Remember in the scheme of things, weight savings is accomplished by doing many small things, not just one big thing with the hopes of shedding lots of weight.
Besides the weight factor, it is well worth hunting down aluminum front and rear bumper supports because not only do they save weight but they won’t rust! Now that aluminum brake drums will be available shortly, they make a nice addition to complimenting whatever wheels you have installed.
EXPLAINING THE SPID CODES (TRUNK ID LABEL) -
“SPID” stands for Service Parts Identification label. It is also referred to as the “trunk ID label.” It is one of the most important labels on your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal and it appears on the inside trunk lid.
The 1984 through most of the 1986 models have the GM part number of 14065987.
The later 1986 and all of the 1987 models the GM part number was 14085266.
The major differences between the two labels were the early one was slightly longer and had a clear film over it. By being longer, it had 14 columns going across whereas the later one only had 13 columns going across. Generally speaking, based on what I have seen over the years, the 1984 through the early 1986 SPID labels would be located towards the driver’s side of the inside trunk lid. The later ones were affixed more to the passenger’s side of the trunk lid. Both versions clearly state on them the words, “DO NOT REMOVE.” This arrangement of codes basically is the DNA of your Turbo Regal.
Unlike the door jamb VIN decals, these are not printed on special tamper proof paper. The early labels can easily be removed and saved if you are getting your inside trunk lid repainted or replaced. The late 1986 and 1987 SPID label is slightly tougher to remove without damaging it.
I can recall one 1987 Turbo car in particular I bought out of Indiana. I remember it clearly as I wrecked my Dodge truck in Ohio trailering it home. The seller had replaced the trunk lid. Fortunately he had saved his original trunk lid. To save time I had the area where the SPID label is cut out of the bad trunk lid as I wanted the original SPID label to go with the car. I did not want the trunk lid. A mistake some owners make today is they buy the one trunk kit version that has a section that covers the inside trunk lid. If you are not careful you can ruin the SPID label when you glue the carpet to the inside trunk lid. The original option trunk carpet kit did not have a piece for the inside trunk lid.
Over the years GM has put this SPID label in various different places. One of the most popular places I have seen in cars in the junkyard is on the composite board that covers the spare tire well. The label also has been shrunken down in size.
Today dealers can simply run the 17 digit VIN number and pull up every option that is on your GM car or truck. When our cars were new they did not have this capability.
More next week on the SPID labels.
DEVYN DOES SCHOOL REPORT ON CAR ENGINES FOR PHYSICS CLASS -
Our granddaughter Devyn, who owns a 2012 Camaro SS convertible, had to do a project/presentation explaining how the basic automotive engine works. I gave her a turbo core and some literature so she could also explain how automakers today use turbos on small engines to make power. I also told her to be sure to explain that this turbo came on the fastest U.S. production car built in 1987.
She did a power point program and explained how her Dad installed a K&N filter and a different exhaust system on her Camaro SS, which now makes over 470 horsepower.
Needless to say, she now has a full understanding of how a motor works, the benefits of better breathing, and the advantages of a Turbo!

CAR FOR SALE - 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL -
This is one with the optional factory astro-roof (CF5). It has undergone a complete frame off restoration. The seller has fully documented with photos in a binder. No expense has been spared. The owner even was able to use brand new original Pallex material. This is a top notch example where no expense has been spared. Hundreds of hours went into the bodywork alone. All the glass and interior was totally removed. NOS GM parts were when possible to make this car like new again. The motor was completely rebuild and balanced. A new Limit Engineering TA 49 turbo was installed.
All new body mounts. NOS GM taillights and bezels were used along with a NOS GM grille. The bumpers were totally stripped with NOS front and rear bumper strips installed. Here is a chance to own one completely redone and enjoy. The seller may take in partial trade another 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. The price is $39,500. This car is exactly as described, show quality from any angle including underneath. This Grand National is located about 20 miles from my shop. One of the best you will find. CARS FOR SALE -
From time to time, whenever we spot an unusual or an exceptional car or truck for sale, or one we have for sale, we will put a blurb in our weekly Inner Circle. Also, any cars that our customers have for sale will be featured here and you can see their car with photos on our website. In this category, we will run the descriptions for two-to-three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. Any new vehicles that we add will appear first, so the oldest listing would be at the end of this section.
If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.

1978-1988 All G-BODY (Including Buick Turbo Regals) -
FLIP-DOWN STAY-DOWN MODIFICATION KIT
TO CONVERT AN ORIGINAL REAR LICENSE PLATE BRACKET
GM used a flip-down stay-down license plate bracket on various other GM cars in the 1980s and 1990s. However, it was never a factory part on a G-body car.
If you’re like me, you hate fighting the heavy spring pressure on the factory license plate bracket when you are filling the gas tank.
The flip-down stay-down bracket has become a popular conversion to put on a G-body car, including the Turbo Regals, since it prevents accidental fuel spillage on the rear fillers. Unfortunately GM does not have any of these flip-down stay-down license plate brackets available and haven’t for years.
We have sold used ones for $25-$28 as fast as I could find them. As each year passes, finding them is getting harder and harder. The factory flip-down stay-down only used a single spring on one of the hinges.
We have designed a modification kit to convert an original rear license plate bracket to a flip-down stay-down license plate. Our new 3-piece modification kit includes 2 brackets and a spring. No holes need to be drilled in the original bracket. It eliminates the 2 factory springs on the existing license plate bracket. Those springs are prone to rust, since they are not stainless. The new spring in our kit is stainless and the 2 brackets are 24-gauge galvanized steel, so the parts will not rust.
The directions are easy-to-follow and include actual photos of the install on our personal Buick Turbo-T.
The end result - There are no rust issues with the new spring and brackets with the flip-down stay-down design along with the convenience of having your hands free to pump the gas. It also eliminates the risk of spilling fuel on the rear fillers. A bargain for under $20.
An excellent upgrade to help avoid gas spills.

MOLLY DESIGNS -
PROTOTYPE GRAND NATIONAL 17.5″ x 10″ x 1/8″ ACRYLIC SIGN
We have designed a collectible sign to highlight Molly’s prototype Grand National. We personally received several prototype photos from Molly years ago, and combined 2 of the photos with the tag line “PROTOTYPE GRAND NATIONAL designed by “MOLLY,” MOLLY DESIGN.”
The design is printed on 1/8″ acrylic. It is printed on a machine that costs over $100,000 using a UV ink printing process is called “Direct Print.” Unfortunately, the printed sign is difficult to photograph because of reflections and light, but it looks great
It makes a great addition to your garage, office or show car display. It also makes a great gift for any Grand National enthusiast

“TOP TEN REASONS I OWN A BUICK GRAND NATIONAL”
17.5″ x 10″ x 1/8″ ACRYLIC SIGN
We have designed a collectible sign to highlight the “TOP TEN REASONS I OWN A BUICK GRAND NATIONAL.”
Along with some quotes, we included our mechanic guy cartoon. Here are the top ten reasons:
# 1 - I was impressed with the factory black paint job.
# 2 - I love the constant challenge of trying to eliminate oil leaks.
# 3 - I wonder where the “power” is in the operation of the power windows.
# 4 - My wife says I needed a spending outlet for my money.
# 5 - I can buy tires wholesale.
# 6 - I was told these cars are seldom stolen.
# 7 - My joy of buying a T-Top Grand National was quickly shattered during the first rain storm.
# 8 - I wanted to learn all about the powermaster brake system.
# 9 - “B-B-B-BAD-TO-THE-BONE” sounds good on the radio.
#10 - The uninformed think it’s a Monte Carlo…the informed won’t challenge me to race.
The design is printed on 1/8″ acrylic. It is printed on a machine that costs over $100,000 using a UV ink printing process is called “Direct Print.” Unfortunately, the printed sign is difficult to photograph because of reflections and light, but it looks great.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

This is one with the optional factory astro-roof (CF5). It has undergone a complete frame off restoration. The seller has fully documented with photos in a binder. No expense has been spared.
