GRAND NATIONAL SEAT MATERIAL -
Most owners will agree that finding the original 1985-1987 Grand National grey pallex seat material today is quite difficult. When you do it can be very expensive and run several hundred dollars for a single yard. The technical name for the material is called Pallex. The same grey Pallex material was also used in the early 1990s on some of the Pontiac Formula and Trans Ams. I also believe it was used on some of the Fieros. If it wasn’t used in the Fiero, that material sure looks very close to the material in the Grand National.
As I write this, no company has reproduced the Pallex material 100% correct. I think currently there are two or three different companies that make a reproduction of the grey pallex material. However, these sources only market it as a complete replacement set of seat covers.
According to a good friend of mine who has been in the custom auto upholstery business for over 25 years, aftermarket material does not have to meet the same specs as the original material. Whether it’s related to sunlight or the ability to hold up from wear issues, it’s just not the same. It can also change color over a period of time.
We don’t offer any of the aftermarket or reproduction Grand National seat material. A set of reproduction seat covers for the front bucket seats can run $500 or more.
At least one company, according to their website, states their reproduction Grand National seat covers are a non-returnable item.
The reproduction seat covers fill a need as the original material in many cars has not held up. It would take a huge commitment for a company to remake the grey and black pallex material exact. We have had rolls of the original Pallex material in the past. You seldom see it for sale today. Again, I am simply pointing out the differences between the original grey Pallex and the various aftermarket/reproduction Grand National seat covers offered today.
It’s only available already pre-sewn as seat covers. I could be wrong on this.
My friend, who is in the business, recently bought from his supplier about 25 yards of a similar grey cloth material that has been discontinued. It is very close to what the original Pallex grey looks like. The main difference is the diamond pattern is spaced further apart. The shade of grey is pretty darn close to the original Pallex.
Fabric is a funny thing. The grey portion under your head rest will be far darker than the portion exposed to the sunlight. Brush your hand one way on your seat and it will appear darker than if you brushed your hand the other direction.
So, last week I bought all 25 yards of this similar grey OEM material from my friend. It is material from the late 1990s for another vehicle and is no longer available. It is not an aftermarket or a reproduction but OEM fabric for another vehicle. I am not sure I can find anymore of this material. I am willing to send you by mail a small sample piece of this material free to inspect before you decide. Just email me direct - [email protected] - with a request.
I think I should warn you that with such a limited supply, it may sell out quickly and perhaps even before you can receive the sample piece. (See Rare Parts listing for more information and pricing). We have priced below $75 for enough material to redo the grey portion in both front bucket seats. This may be a suitable option for some Grand National owners.
PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows a cut out of an original Grand National bucket seat, the grey portion. The strip marked “A Original New” is a brand new original grey Pallex material. The strip marked “B Similar” is a similar cloth we are selling. “C” shows the original 30-year-old grey Pallex material. The photo on the right is a close up of both materials. “A Original New” is brand new grey original Pallex, which is 100% correct. “B Similar” is the version that is similar and available in limited quantities in our Rare Parts listing.
See Rare Parts section for specs and pricing.
NOTE - We may be getting some of the original grey pallex material in. It would run about $179.95 per yard. If you are interested, email me direct - [email protected] .
I am not sure how much material is available. This would be the ORIGINAL material. It takes about one yard to replace the base and upper grey panels for one set of front 1986-1987 Grand National bucket seats.
GMC SYCLONE #00018 -
As we have mentioned in earlier Inner Circle mailings, we are trying to locate the current owner of the Syclone that we owned, which was #00018. We have proof from GMC Truck that it was the Syclone used on the cover of Car and Driver, September 1991 issue. The letter I have states it was also the same Syclone featured in Autoweek, the Detroit Free Press, Automobile, and Motor Week. The last information I have was our Syclone was somewhere in Texas.
PHOTO 2 – Photo on the left if the cover of the September 1991 issue of Car & Driver featuring #00018 Syclone vs the Ferrari 348ts. The Syclone used in this photo was #00018, the one we owned back in 1991. The photo on the right shows one of the inside article pages.
PHOTO 3 - Photo on the top is a copy of our original Michigan 15-day temporary registration that I was issued when we picked up the Syclone in Pontiac, Michigan. The photo on the bottom is one of my Pennsylvania registration cards. Note the license plate reads “ZR1 KLR.” This is just some of the unique original documents I have for this Syclone. I don’t want to print the letter from GMC Truck to prevent it being copied. Hopefully the owner of Syclone #00018 can be located.
ROCK & ROLL AND MUSCLE CARS -
There has always been a strong connection between rock and roll and muscle cars. The two major Reunion Events we did in the early 1990s are two good examples of rock and roll and muscle cars. These early Reunion Events we did were held at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Warminster, PA. These events featured our two main business models - the Pontiac GTO and the Buick Turbo Regals.
If you were at either event, I am sure you will agree they were probably the largest gathering of Turbo Regals and GTOs in one car show. I can recall counting 98 Grand Nationals alone in a double row.
For the Turbo Buick owners, we had Molly, who signed autographs at both events. One year for the GTO crowd we had Davy Jones of Monkees fame and John Wilkin, lead singer of Ronny and the Daytonas. Their huge single hit was “G.T.O.” His group hailed from Nashville and his Mom was a song writer. John Wilkin never even owned a GTO. The song had that California sound. In 1964 it reached number 4 on the Billboard charts.
In the early 1980s, I bought a 1965 tri-power GTO convertible out of the Germantown area of Philadelphia from the brother of Chubby Checker. He is known for his record and dance “The Twist.” Years later I would buy a 1987 Turbo-T from the cousin of Johnnie Mastro, lead singer of the Crests.
Recently you saw where we listed some rare Shelby parts and Shelby cars for sale. The seller’s husband was the lead singer of the Bell Notes. In 1959 their hit song entitled, “I’ve Had it” reached # 6 nationally. The area in and around Philadelphia was a tremendous breeding ground for a number of early rock and roll groups in the 1950s and early 1960s.
PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left is a Monkees record album my wife Eileen had Davy Jones sign at the one Reunion Event. Davy Jones was probably the most popular member of the Monkees. He’s the one many of the teenage girls had a crush on back then. In some ways their TV show was a preview of what later would become MTV. The photo on the right is of Ronny and the Daytonas, and I had him autograph this for me. I later framed the photo along with an original 45 record of “G.T.O.”
BREAKING NEWS -
Breaking news in Today’s newspaper… there was a fire in central Pennsylvania, which destroyed a church that was slated to be a museum honoring the late Monkees lead singer, Davy Jones. The former Beaverton Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Pennsylvania burned to the ground.
Davy Jones lived nearby for 20 years before he died at age 66 in 2012. Last year a lifelong Monkees fan bought the church to house a Davy Jones memorial.
GNX CLONE ON EBAY LAST WEEK -
Last week on ebay there was a GNX clone listed for sale. I received several calls from people wanting to know if the car was a real GNX. I got a call actually from the person that was selling it on ebay. At the time he called, I did not know it was on ebay. He called me since in his research he found out some of the parts on the car came from our company. He also wanted to know if he had a real GNX or just a good clone. I explained to him it was a clone.
In the midst of our conversation I asked him to give me the last 6 digits of the VIN number.
It turns out this car was one of my cars that I sold to a customer in Arizona. I believe that owner in Arizona did the GNX conversion, since it was 100% stock when I sold it.
The current owner, who listed it on ebay, bought it several years ago and resides in the Midwest. I bought it out of New Jersey back in 2000. On many of the cars posted for sale on ebay, you can click on the auto check heading and see a complete run down of dates and various states the car changed hands when it was legally titled to a new owner. In some cases, you have to pay a fee to see the history but in most cases, it is free. If you see Warminster, Pennsylvania as the location, in most of the cases, it will be one of my cars. This would be between the years 1993 and 2012.
If you are considering any of 1986-1987 Turbo Regal on ebay, each listing shows the VIN number. Simply email me the last six digits and I can tell you if it was one of mine and when I owned it. So far every week we have reunited owners with critical paperwork, including a notarized Authenticity Letter. We sold a lot of nice examples over the last 23-plus years, many of which I am sure are still on the road.
Remember, even if you still own one of my cars, we may have information you don’t have besides being able to provide you with a notarized Letter of Authenticity.
TOO BAD BUICK NEVER OFFERED THESE OPTIONS -
Looking back, it’s a shame Buick never offer powder-coated frames and stainless brake lines as options. This would have been a big seller to those of us that reside in the rust belt. It would have been a better choice than having individual Buick dealers drill holes in the body and spray that tar stuff called “Rusty Jones” usually with total disregard as to where they were spraying it! Or, at the very least, offered painted frames and suspension!
Ask any body shop and they all will tell you the same thing - rust repair is very costly. I know when I was buying these cars, I always asked was the car rust proofed? While it protects it from rust, it is also one of the toughest coatings to remove. A good many of the cars we bought and sold came out of Virginia and Maryland, which usually had milder winters.
Think about it, if had GM offered these two key options on certain models, it would have been a huge hit.
PONTIAC GTOS AND BUICK GRAND NATIONALS -
In many ways the Pontiac GTO and Buick Grand National share a very similar path. As many of you know, the GTO came out in 1964. In those first several years, the GTO was an option on a Lemans/Tempest. In other words, they were not titled as a GTO.
As most of you know, the Grand National also was just an option on a Two-Door Regal Coupe and the Grand National was listed as an option. This did not change until production was extended in July of 1987. Those last 10,000 were titled as a Grand National.
Likewise, the GTO did not become a separate model, I believe, until 1967. (I used to know all this stuff years ago).
One could even go one step further and compare the limited production GTO Judge to the Buick GNX. Both cars saw limited production and represented the pinnacle for the model. The GTO Judge was made for three years - 1969-1970-1971. Both cars demand huge dollars. I just wish I had all the GTO Judges and GNXs that I sold. I even had two real Ram Air IV Judges and nine real GNXs.
The nicest GTO Judge I had was a 1970 all original factory 4-speed. It took me several months to find a buyer at $3,500 in the 1980s. This car appears on a GTO poster that was produced over 20 years ago when it was owned by the buyer I sold it to. The picture was photographed in the Fall on Sugarbottom Road, where we used to live. Just a bit of trivia!
WE WELCOME A NEW DISTRIBUTOR -
We welcome a new distributor, Lorenz Racing out of West Salem, Ohio. The owner, Brian Lorenz, has been specializing in 1986-1987 Turbo Regals for over 20 years. They perform basic maintenance on original low-mileage cars, as well as major bolt ons. They also do complete rebuilds. They work very closely with many of the other major companies such as Cal Hartline of Hartline Performance and Bryan and Dave Weber of Weber Power Products to name a few. Their phone number is 330-608-9735.
REPORTY FROM HERSHEY -
Hershey swap meet was the week following Fall Carlisle. One of our good customers Jim Wilson emailed me this report.
He covered the entire area and did not spot one single Turbo Buick for sale. In the swap meet, not one single Turbo Buick part or even a G-body part. He spotted over 50 Mustangs for sale and one extremely nice 8,700 mile Monte Carlo SS 1987 model. The asking price for the Monte Carlo was $17,900. More interesting was a 1987 Hurst Olds with just 300 actual miles that was never titled. It had a firm price tag of $39,000, which was later marked down to $33,900.
A special thanz to Jim for providing us with this report.
TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -
If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]
TIP FROM KIRBAN -
One smart investment to make is to replace the 30-year-old rubber front brake hoses to the front calipers. Our part #7218 is the cure as they are stainless and DOT approved. The improvement is something you can immediately feel when you apply your brakes. The original hoses swell up before full pressure is realized on the disc pads up front.
Also, remember always use DOT 3 brake fluid. The newer brake fluid can cause issues with the o-rings in the powermaster brake unit. Powermaster brake units have enough issues without making a dumb mistake like using the wrong brake fluid!
REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM BRAKE DRUMS - NOW IN STOCK -
The reproduction aluminum brake drums are now in stock. If you purchase a set between now and Monday, October 31st, we will give you FREE shipping if you reside in the basic 48 states. Besides the weight advantage, they won't rust like steel ones do. Only a few weeks left to get in on this special deal!
You must call our office to place your order to get this special pricing - 215-766-1611 x 0. Remember, this was standard equipment on every GNX.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPLACEMENT BOOST LINE VACUUM T
The wastegate solenoid, turbocharger and wastegate actuator are connected by three vacuum hoses and a grey plastic “Y” fitting.
This replacement Y connector is similar in size with the correct orifice in the one outlet which match the original vacuum T. When you install this new Y, you will need to insert the same hose into the metal orifice opening as the original T.
Inside the one side of the connector “Y” fitting there is a metal orifice, which allows only a small amount of vacuum to pass through. If the “Y” or surrounding vacuum hoses are damaged or cracked, you can have an overboost condition.
You should also check the three hoses for possible cracks due to heat or swelling at the ends. This could cause engine damage from leaning out the air/fuel mixture.

Reproduction BELT TENSIONER WITH NEW PULLEY
Original 1986-1987 Turbo Regal belt tensioners can be worn out or broken, which can cause major charging problems.
This new reproduction belt tensioner uses better quality steel spring materials using today’s technology. The original factory tension on the OEM tensioner is rated at 19.5 to 20. The spring tension on these tested at 20.5.
This part has not been available from GM for many years.

Reproduction T-TOPS WEATHERSTRIP SEALS (4) SET
GM discontinued all the factory 1984-1987 Regals T-Tops weatherstripping several years ago. After much research and trial fitting, we now buy from a source that actually was a GM supplier.
We offer the seals as a kit of 4 pieces - 2 main surround seals and 2 anti-rattle strips.
Kit includes the two main body seals that surround the T-Tops openings. These run from the front pillar post around the entire T-Tops opening frame, and down the back side of the door jamb area. These would be the larger seals in the kit.
The other 2 seals are called the “anti-rattle” weatherstrips. These attach to the actual metal frame area, so when you place the T-Tops in position, it helps to make them seat snug and helps to prevent the T-Tops from rattling. You need to adjust the T-Tops so they are snug.
To further restore the car, we also highly recommend you install the Rear Seat Frame Brace Kit, Part #1586 or Part #7169, unless you have already done so. These help retain body stiffness.
Actual T-Tops can also be adjusted as needed, so they latch securely once you have all the new weatherstrip seals properly installed.
This kit is actually less expensive than the GM’s price when it was still available.
These T-Top seals come from a different supplier than the other seals we offer. The fitment is very good.
NOTE - This kit does NOT include the actual seals for the lift-off T-Tops panels. If you need the seals for the actual T-Tops panels, you would need to purchase #7375 kit, which includes all 6 seals.
NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7375 Reproduction T-Tops Weatherstrip Seals (6) Kit, #7211 T-Tops Reproduction Anti-Rattle Weatherstrip Seals (2), #1586 Powder-coated Black Rear Seat Frame Brace Kit®, #7169 Reproduction GNX Rear Seat Brace Kit, and #7171 Reproduction T-Tops Locking-style Plastic Outer Trim Rails (2) and Hardware.
These are excellent replacement parts for any restoration.

GM Licensed - Custom-Made REPRODUCTION WINDOW STICKERS
The most important piece of paper you can have with your car is the original Window Sticker, which gives all the important "history" of your Buick. It is also something that most buyers want when they purchase an original car.
This Window Sticker would show the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price,) all standard equipment, all optional equipment and their prices, destination and delivery charges, federal, state, and local taxes, and prep charges. It may also show the average fuel economy. This allows a consumer to walk into an automobile dealership and find an itemized, accurate price tag on every new vehicle.
If your Window Sticker is missing or damaged, we can have a GM licensed reproduction made specifically for your vehicle by ECS Automotive Concepts.
NOTE - We are only offering 1986 and 1987 Window Stickers at this time.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website.
