Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 05-10-2017 -
WHAT A WEEK -
What a week! I hit 4 junkyards, visited my niece and her family, and attended the NC Turbo Buick Nationals in less than a week.
Compared to years past, I think this event had the most first-time attendees. I base that on the fact that at the Friday night dinner, we asked all the first-time attendees stand up and it seemed like a lot of people stood up.
RIP BENNY BENNETT -
As many of you may have heard, one of our fellow Turbo Regal members died in his motel room Thursday night. Benny, I believe, was in his mid-40s and was from Augusta, Georgia. Since I was staying at this same hotel, I was in the lobby when the desk was contacting 911.
As you can imagine, the Buick community mourned this lose at this event. I made mention of this at the dinner Friday night. Gary, a good friend of Benny’s from Atlanta, shared a little about Benny with the crowd.
Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
PHOTOS FROM THE NC TURBO BUICK NATIONALS -
Photo 1 - The top left photo shows GNS PERFORMANCE full plug-and-play dash cluster. His website is - www.GNSperformance.com The top right photo shows John Norton’s personal driver, a Mazda RX7 fitted with a modified 1986-1987 Turbo engine. John co-authored the book “Powermaster Brake System Trouble Shooting and Repair Guide” with Richard Clark. The bottom left photo shows one of our New York customers wearing an old Grand National shirt that I can’t remember ever seeing before. Does anyone know who made this shirt? It was a cool looking shirt! The bottom right photo shows just some of the Turbo Regals at Richard’s shop that are there for repairs.
PHOTO 2 - The four photos here just show a portion of probably the 30 or more Turbo Regal parts cars that Richard has at this location. I made the comment at the Friday night dinner that between him and Brian Weavy of Gbodyparts.com, they undoubtedly have the largest collection of dead Turbo Regals in North Carolina and perhaps the entire U.S.
I have been to junkyards that have 6,000 to 8,000 cars and I have yet to even stumble on the remains of any Turbo Regals. I can find Monte Carlo SS’s but not so much as one Turbo Regal of any color or condition. They are basically extinct, at least out east.
PHOTO 3 - In the top left photo I was standing on a ladder looking down on where Richard has his dyno machine. The car with the hood up in the forefront is Richard Clark’s 10-mile GNX. The top right photo shows the same GNX and you can see the two stickers still on the windshield and the clear plastic on the seats. Even the steering wheel has the factory wrapper on it. Under this GNX sits another GNX that used to belong to the President of ASC. I believe I told Richard about the auction they were having at ASC, and he had the winning bid for the GNX. The bottom left photo shows a cool looking Monte Carlo that was at the event that has a Turbo Regal engine under the hood. This car is a real sleeper since nothing gives it away on the outside besides a few tasteful emblems. The bottom right photo shows just one of the clever license plates I spotted on one of the Turbo Regals at the event.
PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows a very cold Don Cruz on Saturday morning at the race track. Since he’s from Florida, temps below 60 degrees are not the norm. The top right photo shows two rare Turbo-Ts. One is a dark blue metallic and the other is light blue with the blackout package. I believe the light blue car also had the rare bench seat. The last two photos are from the Friday night dinner held at the Cadillac Ranch.
THE CADILLAC RANCH -
The Cadillac Ranch, where the Friday night dinner was held, was an amazing place and the night was quite an experience. About a 25-minute ride from Burlington city limits, this estate covers 66 prime acres. The owner is Ronnie Stallings who owns Carolina Chem-Strip. He is a long-time personal friend of Richard Clark.
The building where the dinner was held on his property is fully heated and has a gorgeous outside patio. Inside it can seat over 200 people and has a fully-stocked bar.
Although I did not see his personal car collection, he does indeed own a 1965 Cadillac coupe. However, the name Cadillac Ranch is from the hit song “Cadillac Ranch,” sung by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Ronnie was a gracious host and everyone had a great time. I told him I wanted to come back next week for dinner in the main house!
TWO COINCIDENCES ON THIS TRIP -
The first coincidence I discovered as I was driving down one of the country roads going to the Friday night dinner held at the Cadillac Ranch. I had Paulie Castle Junior with me, and he was using his smart phone for directions. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a sign the said “Hinshaws Chevelle Parts.” Jim Hinshaw is a long-time friend of mine, and I had not seen in probably 20 years!
I quickly turned around and Paulie and I got the nickel tour of his Chevelle operation.
I told him where I was heading. It turns out he did the interior in two of the Cadillac Ranch owner’s Chevelles. I then invited him and his wife Sylvia to come for the dinner at the Cadillac Ranch. I said they could be the two people that know nothing about Turbo Regals at the table!
Jim started his Chevelle business two years before I started our GTO business in the late 1970s. It was great seeing them after all these years.
The other coincidence happened at the Friday night dinner. A Turbo Regal owner came up to me and said he was from Cleveland, Ohio. He said his mom has been friends with a school classmate since they were in grade school together. He said every year this friend of his mom and her husband would come and visit from Illinois and bring him a diecast car. This started back when he was about 9 years old. He is now in his thirties.
During the most recent visit, he told the husband of his mom’s friend that he had a Turbo Regal. The husband, Dick Fox, asked if he dealt with Dennis Kirban.
Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dick Fox would fly out to Pennsylvania every 3 or 4 weeks and buy a GTO from me, drive back to Chicago, and resell it. We probably did over 20 GTOs together and every one of them made the drive back home to Chicago. He told Dick he would be seeing me at the NC Turbo Buick Nationals. What a small world!
TURBO REGAL VALVE COVER DESK TOP LAMP UPDATE -
We have a good amount of interest on this new desk top Valve Cover Lamp. I hope to have pricing for the desk top lamp in the next Inner Circle.
Fortunately, I was able to buy a few sets of Turbo Regal valve covers at the NC Turbo Buick Nationals event.
On this past trip, I was able to get another one of those 5-foot long Skylark taillights in excellent condition. My source will now be able to make two lights.
BREAKING NEWS -
We now have the exact correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal lower radiator hose, part #7269, in stock. I think what happened a while ago is, we could not get the turbo lower radiator hose and we substituted the lower radiator hose for the non-turbo application.
MY LAST CAR TRAILER IS FOR SALE - UPDATE -
The trailer surface is 15 feet long and has a 5 foot beaver tail drop. Paul will also include a set of 4 tie-down straps with it. The comparable cost today for this same trailer is around $2,395 to $2,595 from Econo trailer located in western, Pennsylvania. They are selling them at Carlisle every year. The car trailer new would not come with Goodyear trailer radial tires, like how this one is equipped. At this writing, it is still available.
Last year I sold my open car trailer to Paul Castle. Because of his schedules, he has not yet picked it up. He is planning to come next month for it when he attends the Chevrolet Carlisle event. However, if someone is interested, it is for sale for $1,195. It is at our home location Kintnersville, Pennsylvania.
This was the second Dively open trailer I bought new and I used it to trailer the Turbo Regals that we would buy. I sold the first Dively open trailer I used to Richard Clark.
This Dively trailer was built in 2007 and is the perfect size for any G-body car. The fenders are low enough so you can open the doors with the car on the trailer. It rides on newer Goodyear radials specific for a trailer. The wheels and tires have been balanced. The tires show no dry rot. The gross trailer weight is 7,000 lbs with the empty trailer weighing a mere 1,450 lbs. It has four wheel brakes and 4 key holes for locking the chains. This makes it very light weight to maneuver. I would venture a guess that over 100 different Turbo Regals rode on this trailer over the years.
THE NEW PARTS JUST KEEP COMING UPDATE -
Having just returned from the NC Turbo Buick Nationals, we will be offering several new products.
We struck a deal with one of our customers who can custom make a nice am/fm CD kit for our cars. What makes his kit nice is, unlike most aftermarket units, this unit will not stick out in the dash nor will you have to cut any wires.
The radio/CD player is flush mounted in the dash like it belongs there. It does not stick out like many aftermarket radios do. Not only that, but both radio CD units we are looking at use the stock radio brackets. One version will be lower budget version, and the other version will have blue tooth, etc. The radio CD player will be plug in, and flush mounted in the factory stock radio bezel. No factory wires get cut! Watch for details soon.

RUNNING OUT OF GREY PALLEX MATERIAL -
Currently we have sold out of every bit of the black pallex material. We only have small sections of the grey pallex material available. We have nothing over 3 feet in length in grey pallex. See the Rare Parts section for some of the various lengths of grey pallex available and pricing.
TIP FROM KIRBAN -
I am often asked “Do I need rear seat braces if my car is a hardtop?” The answer is a resounding YES.
The 4 rear seat braces kit, part #1586, we sell helps retain the tightness of your hardtop which, in turn, keeps the windows snug across the weatherstrips.
With that same thinking, check and see if your Turbo Regal is missing the 4 lower body bushings, part #7306, or the 6 lower body bushings, part #7307. I was surprised that a few of cars I checked at the event last week did not have this done to their cars.
These are just simple steps to improve the ride and to insure your car does not ride down the road like a 30-year-old car.
TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -
If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

KIRBAN SEMINAR TURBO REGAL EVENT - LEMONT, ILLINOIS -
Tuesday June 27th, 2017, 6 until 9 pm?
Paul has recently informed me that he will give everyone that brings a Turbo Regal to this event a FREE Silver Billet T-shirt. I will also be doing a mini No Reserve auction! This is a rare opportunity to hear one of my seminars in your area. Since I am speaking on Hurst later that week at the GTOAA National meet, I will also show you some of the very rare Hurst items and artwork that I have in my collection.
The location is Castle Performance, 220 River Street, Lemont, Illinois. Since I will be in Illinois as a speaker later that week I have arranged with Paul Castle and the local Buick GS Club to coordinate this event. Free pizza and drinks courtesy of the Chicagoland Chapter of the GSCA Club!
NOTE - If you are planning on attending this seminar at Castle Performance in Lemont, Illinois, please email - [email protected] - so we have an idea how many people to expect.
I will have a specific gift for each attendee. I will have some tagged and bagged Turbo parts with me and the usual M&Ms contest. This should be a fun time.
I have a special guest that will also be attending. He has been making a certain Turbo Regal part for us for over 25 years. You probably have it on your Turbo Regal.
We will have a special gift for all attendees! Hope to see many of my Illinois customers there.
Paul and the local GS Club request you bring a lawn chair. Food and drinks will be provided. If you reside anywhere near Lemont, Illinois, we hope you can attend and bring your Turbo Regal. It’s also open to any muscle car. I would love to meet some of my customers that may have never been to the GS Nationals. This is a rare opportunity, since I don’t travel long distances much anymore.
NOTE - You can bring any cores - powermaster, mass air flow sensors, turbos or steering wheels - for a Letter of Credit for parts you may need for your car. It saves you shipping.
Mark the date on your calendar - Friday, June 27th.
UPDATE ON KIRBAN SEMINAR AT CASTLE’S SHOP LEMONT, ILLINOIS –
This past week I spent some time with Paul and his son at the Turbo Buick/Richard Clark event. He plans to also offer several rare items signed by Molly for the No Reserve. He also plans to get some of the major vendors to donate items for a raffle. We will also have a 50/50 raffle. Bring any Turbo Regal parts you may want to sell or trade as Paul and I are possible buyers.
If you reside anywhere near northern Illinois or Indiana, mark your calendar as this is one event you don’t want to miss.
It has no rain date. I am speaking two days later at the GTOAA Nationals in nearby Springfield, Illinois. Watch for more updates on this next Turbo Buick event as the date draws closer.
38th ANNUAL GTOAA NATIONALS -

This event is held in Springfield, Illinois at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Convention Center. I am guest speaker Thursday, June 29th at 8:30 am until 10 am. I checked with a friend of mine and, although this event is not advertised to the public, you can come as a guest to see some of the finest GTOs in the country. You can use my name and say you are a guest of mine, if you plan to come Thursday.

JULY 14-16, 2017
Carlisle Fairgrounds, Carlisle, PA
This year’s Chrysler event has a special all new Hurst Nationals July 14th and 15th in conjunction with the Chrysler Nationals. I have been asked to conduct a seminar on Hurst both days, July 14th and 15th. The location of my seminars as well as the other seminars is held just off the grounds from Gate 3 at the Expo Center. They have not yet told me my speaking times.
My granddaughter, Devyn hopes to go with me to help. With Chrysler introducing the Demon this April, my guess is they will have several Demons on display at Carlisle. Hope to see some of my customers at this event. I am as well versed with early Hurst history as I am with Turbo Regals.
As with all my seminars, I will be doing a M&Ms contest in honor of my parents. The Don Garlits autographed connecting rod will make a nice prize!

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1978-1988 G-Body (Including 1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal Models) -
Reproduction 4″ x 10″ REAR SPEAKERS (2) SET
It has been hard to locate a suitable 4″ x 10″ speaker for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal rear package shelf. The space is too narrow to use anything but a 4″ x 10″ speaker. It must also fit the factory cage bracket.
We found this suitable reproduction 8 ohm speaker. You do have to replace the connector ends, since the factory plug on the harness will not fit the terminals on this new speaker.
These fit the factory metal cage that GM used to secure the original rear speakers.
Over the years, age and sunlight have probably cracked the original speakers. These are a perfect replacement.
A nice upgrade for any interior restoration.

EXTERIOR SOLAR LED MOTION LIGHT PANEL -
This exterior solar LED motion light panel is a neat compact product that fills a need for any home owner, shop owner, or apartment owner. It’s a simple and inexpensive method to light up a walkway at your house, or garage door way.
Since it’s powered by the sun, it means zero electric costs!
Panel is compact, just 4" x 6" x 1/2". The housing is white. It has 36 LED lights that equals the output of a 100 watt incandescent bulb! It does this with zero costs to your electric bill.
It has 3 different modes that you can set. MODE 1 - It can come on at dusk on low power and stay on until dawn. MODE 2 - It can be set to come on at dusk on low power, go to full power by motion, then revert back to lower power. MODE 3 - It can be set to go on by motion at dusk on full power and turn off after about 10 seconds if no motion is detected or activate by motion walking by it.
Most small solar powered outside motion lights are rated at only 20 to 50 watt and less than 400 lumens, unless you buy the larger ones. This one equals a 100 watt incandescent light and 450 lumens. Not only is this compact and bright enough to light any walk way or entrance, it is priced below most units available in stores.
You can mount this anywhere outside as long as it gets direct sunlight. The ideas are endless. It pays for itself since it draws no electric energy!

TRANSLATOR CUSTOM-MADE BLACK MOUNTING BRACKET
When converting your car to a modern Mass Air Flow sensor, such as an LT1 or LS1 style sensor, a translator is needed. This is a custom-made mounting bracket to hold the Mass Air Flow Sensor Translator.
This bracket provides a simple, yet effective way of mounting the Translator in a convenient location.
This clever bracket was designed and produced by one of our customers. He saw a need to eliminate have the translator wire tied under the hood.
The bracket is made in acrylic and painted black. It mounts using existing holes. NO modifications are made to the car or to the translator. It also leaves enough space below the bracket to access the headlight wiring or if you have the charcoal canister and stock intake or even a 4" Cold Air Intake pipe.
Once installed, the custom-made bracket is barely visible.
The bracket comes with a spacer and easy-to-follow directions.
Our photo on the left shows the bracket and the photo on the right shows it installed on a car.
NOTE - This bracket will not work if you retain the factory air cleaner box.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
