THE GRAND NATIONAL AND THE TRAIN COLLECTION -
I have a binder that contains original descriptions of some of the Turbo Regals we sold. Most were a single page description with one photo on it. According to my chart, it was 2002 we bought this 1987 Grand National. It was a hardtop with only 5,590 actual miles.
The car was located in a small town in northern Connecticut, sitting in what can best be described as a single car showroom along the main street. If I recall, the seller was a prison guard and could not get off work to meet me with the car. The car had been stored for about three years in this one-car heated showroom. I think the building belonged to a friend of his. I went there to pick it up, armed with a battery, figuring it would be easy to start and drive out of the showroom and load on my trailer. The owner had told me he had it started recently. Boy was I wrong!
I get to the place and there is a custodian there to unlock the little showroom. Around the car on all the walls were shelves of toy trains. The custodian told me they are very valuable. I regret I did not take any photos of them. I inspected car, which was just as described, 100% stock and looking brand new. I then popped the hood and was getting ready to drop the battery in so I could drive it out of the little showroom.
At this point the custodian said under no circumstances could I start the car, as the fumes and dust would not be good for the train collection that he was there to watch over. He also did not want the showroom doors open for long period of time.
This problem I was not prepared for, so I ended up having to manually push the car out of the building and away from the building before I could get the car up and running
In case you're wondering, the year was 2002. I priced the car for $18,200 and my records show it sold in one hour. According to my chart for 2002, I had three of the Grand Nationals around the same time - one had 3,500 miles, another had 2,300 miles and this one had 5,590 miles. At the time, it was quite unusual to have three low-mileage Grand Nationals around the same time.
The years 1997 through 2000 were the biggest selling years for us. In 1997 we sold 32, 1998 we sold 39, in 1999 the total jumped to 46 and in 2000 the total was 44. For 1999 it works out to one almost every week. In that count there were also Syclones, Turbo Trans Ams, and GNXs. The numbers even look more impressive when you calculate the fact I had to go get almost every one of these cars with my truck and trailer. I had a rule back then to only go as far west as the Mississippi River. The reason was cost per day to be on the road, between lodging, food, and gas, would add up. I always stayed at nice motels and ate well on these road trips. However, I did break this rule on several trips when the cars were too good to pass up.
Looking back, one thing I regret doing was taping a business card in the glove box so future owners would be able to trace the car back to us.
In all the trips hauling back these Turbo Regals, the trucks I used never broke down nor did I ever have a flat tire.
I remember coming around on the beltway around Washington DC on one trip with a Grand National on my trailer and a wheel of the trailer came off. I had no idea as it still towed fine, until people honked their horn. Fortunately, the wheel never hit anyone nor did I ever find it!
Of the various trucks we have owned, two were the best for all the towing I did. One was a 2001 Chevrolet 2500 HD that had the optional 8.1 litre gas engine, backed up with the Allison transmission. When rust had attacked the undercarriage so bad, I traded it in on an identical 2002 GMC version, again with the optional 8.1 litre gas engine and Allison transmissions. Even the color was the same! Both of these trucks easily handled the towing.
Richard Clark bought my first open trailer, which served me well for many years. The second trailer was identical to the first trailer and I still have it. The trailer is an open trailer with 4-wheel brakes, 18 foot long and only weighs about 1,500 lbs when empty.
Next week I'll share another story about a unique purchase at a high-rise building in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
PHOTO 1 - Shows the actual flyer on the 5,590-mile 1987 Grand National hardtop. You can barely see the small showroom that I had just pushed the car out of. Back then I usually shot a photo of the car where I picked it up so potential buyers could see just how nice the cars were before I would detail them and install the missing body bushings and brace kits.
THE TV SHOW "LIFE" GRAND NATIONAL -
If you recall in our 2-05-2014 and 02-19-2014 Inner Circle issues we mentioned that one of our customers had the winning bid on eBay for the Grand National that was reportedly used in the TV series "Life." This series only had a two-year run in 2007 and 2008. My wife and I used to watch it.
I can remember the Grand National as it was usually seen in the beginning of some of the episodes. One person, Anthony Colucci, a long-time customer of ours was really hooked on the TV show and had the winning bid for the car. He recently sent us some photos as he now has the car. He is going to make an effort to get it registered in time to bring to our Spring Open House.
According to Anthony, the car is in good shape but needs a lot of little things. He says the car has all the right marks and the holes and wires where the police lights were located. It also has that wide stripe down the center of the car.
According to the VIN number, it is a 1984 Grand National. The interior is all 1987 with the exceptions of the dash, steering wheel, and column. The engine and transmission is a 1987 with a non-stock turbo and intercooler. The valve covers appear to be Kenne Bell. The front bumper appears to be our fiberglass bumper. The rear is a Detroit Locker and has an upgraded torque converter. It has aftermarket headers and the air conditioning unit has been removed. Anthony plans to keep the car exactly as it appeared on the TV series.
He says the underside of the car is like new, since it was a California car. It’s neat to own a piece of TV history.
PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows the "Life" TV series car. You can clearly see the wide white stripe down the center. The top right shows the car from the back end. The bottom left photo shows the interior, which needs some attention. The bottom right photo shows the engine compartment. My guess is at some point Anthony will try and contact Charlie Crews Jr (actor Damian Lewis) and see if he can get some still shots of him by the car from the TV show.
MORE PHOTOS FROM THE ATLANTIC CITY CLASSIC CAR SHOW -
PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows an array of traffic lights that were restored and for sale at the Atlantic City Classic Car Show. The photo to the right shows some license plates that were for sale. NOTE - It appears someone has trouble spelling the word warning correctly!
PHOTO 4 - The photo to the left shows just a portion of the huge display Kerbeck had at the show. They claim to be the largest dealer for Corvettes. The photo to the right show one of the new V8 SS Impalas that Chevrolet recently introduced. Pontiac had a similar offering in 2008-2009 with its Pontiac G8 GT model.
UNUSUAL RECALL FOR ASTON MARTIN -
My sister Doreen sent me this blurb about a recall that affects almost 18,000 cars or roughly 75% of the cars they have built since 2008. They discovered that a Chinese supplier had used fake materials in its cars accelerator pedals. The supplier had used plastic that was “not of industrial quality” in manufacturing the part, making it more liable to break. Aston Martin is now shifting production of the gas pedal back to the U.K. It makes you wonder what did they use that would not hold up to simply depressing a gas pedal?
CLOSE OUT SPECIAL ON 1986-1987 TURBO REGAL - OIL TUBE AND BREATHER ASSEMBLY -
This oil tube and breather assembly was not one of our parts but was a part made by another source and we purchased their remaining Inventory. Be sure to call our office if you want one. To see a photo go to 03-12-2013 Inner Circle, Photo 1. The tube is straight and measures four inches tall overall and the breather has a chrome cap on the top and measures three inches in diameter. Billet construction. The price is $29 each, which includes shipping to any of the basic 48 states. You must call the office to order this, as it is not on our website - 215-766-1611 x 0. We have about 12 of them left. This is a product we bought from another company.
WHERE IS THE PLANE -
Where is the plane that virtually has dropped out of sight for now over a week? I find it intriguing that with all the countries involved and the technology available, that a full-size passenger jet that big has been impossible to locate.
WE'RE GOING BACK TO MY OLD NEIGBORHOOD ON SATURDAY
We have been invited to a Open House private car collection display on Saturday back where I grew up. The person who invited us was one of the younger kids that would hang out when I was sixteen. He was about 8 years younger. He remembers virtually every car I owned back then. Since then he has amassed a car collection and has invited a bunch of old friends over to view and reminisce about the old days and cars. Watch for photos next week.
OUR 2002 PONTIAC GT COUPE HAS BEEN SOLD -
The new owner of our 2002 Pontiac GTO Coupe is Mike Tierney out of New Jersey. He is fairly familiar with some of our personal cars. He bought his 1997 Buick LeSabre from us in 2005 when it had 115,000 miles on it. It now shows 170,000 miles and the transmission is starting to slip. In 2009 he purchased our A90 Audi Sport, a 1995 model, which Audi replaced with the new A4 series in 1996. This somewhat rare Audi had 108,000 miles on it and now has 169,000 miles. Mike still drives the Audi today to work. It’s a great winter car since it has the optional 6-position heated seats. He missed buying our 1995 Riviera a few years back by ten minutes!
Mike also owns a 1987 Grand National, which he did not buy from us! It strikes me kind of funny that he didn’t buy a Grand National from us, but instead most of his personal cars in recent years have been bought from us. Mike hopes to pick up the Pontiac in the next week or so. We had several interested customers wanting the Pontiac, but most of them were several states away, which would have added costs to the deal.
I have another fairly local customer that still has our 1994 GS Regal coupe that has over 185,000 miles on it.

With that in mind, if you reside anywhere the northeast part of the country, we can give you a good price on shipping, since shipping would be from our Plumsteadville, PA zip code to your zip code. However, you must act quickly if you want either the single-piece rear filler or the Spoolfools front set.
Depending on the demand, we may not order a second skid of them prior to our mid-April Open House event.
Remember, if you want us to hold any filler panels to be picked up at the Open House, be sure to call Christina - 215-766-1611 x 0.
NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1978-1987 Buick Turbo Regal (with 10-bolt Housing) -
REAR SUPER SWAY BAR ANTI-ROLL
This rear sway bar kit is designed for the stock suspension, and will keep the car from twisting off the line and losing traction, while greatly improving handling characteristics. This design retains the "sleeper" factory sway bar appearance and also works better than the "race only" weld-on anti-roll setups at the track. It’s also much more street friendly and allows you to launch level and straight like "Pro-Stock," while greatly improving handling in normal driving conditions. Tire “scrubbing" is also drastically reduced or eliminated with close fitting tires or slicks.
This design simply bolts into place and the average person can do it in less than two hours with simple tools.
This design was made especially to bolt on for ease of installation and meet strict racing rules where no welding is allowed.
Here are some of the major features with this set up:
Legal for IHRA and NHRA Stock Eliminator
Fits all factory 10-bolt housing with 2-5/8" axle tubes.
Clears most standard single and dual exhaust systems.
Lower center of gravity.
Designed to be used on daily street driven cars and race cars.
Quiet smooth operation with HD Polyurethane mounts.
Does not bind or restrict suspension movement.
Launches level and straight, safer and more consistent.
Allows much more power to be applied at launch.
Designed to last longer and can be easily rebuilt if ever needed.
Light weight, high strength 1.25 diameter 4130 Chromoly seamless tubing.
Large HD 1/2" Chromoly rod ends and steel hex adjusters.
Only the best components available are used.
Smooth exterior with gloss black powdercoating.

This system has been very popular among Turbo Regal owners for many years.

1979-1988 G-Body Cars, including Buick Turbo Regal, and
1982-1992 Camaro and Firebird
UPGRADED REFURBISHED USED LOWER STEERING SHAFT
After much research, we have found a lower steering shaft that what we feel is the best replacement option. This refurbished lower steering shaft will fit the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal (all 1979-1988 G-Body models and 1982-1992 Camaro and Firebird models) lower steering shaft. The original lower steering shaft uses a flexible joint (steering coupler) to connect to the gear box. Over time this flexible steering coupler can weaken and create more play in the steering. Another weak point on the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals and all the other G-Body models is the bushing at the base of the main steering shaft. GM simply used two rubber seals instead of a metal ball bearing bushing. We offer the better ball bearing kit, which is our Part #7572. We highly recommend you purchase this kit at the same time, since installation requires the lower steering shaft to be removed to install it.
The refurbished lower shaft we now offer is actually one from a later-model GM vehicle. It is also 8 to 10 years newer than the various Jeep lower steering shafts that are offered on various forums. Another reason this is a better lower steering shaft replacement over the Jeep version is the GM vehicle this one comes out of is encased in a rubber boot. Because it has been encased in a rubber boot, it has not been exposed to any corrosion over the years and virtually looks brand new. Fortunately, these are easier for me to remove from the vehicles!
Because this lower steering shaft has the metal swivel joints, it is far superior to the flexible steering coupler GM used in the G-Body cars. This refurbished lower steering shaft also gives you more room under the hood. Being a GM part, the shaft is collapsible in case of a front-end accident.
I send these out to a specialist that modifies them for our application. Our specialist has been doing them for several years. This upgraded lower steering shaft has the superior metal joints at both ends. Each comes with detailed directions with photos. You do have to make one small notch on the base of the main steering shaft in order for the upper clinch bolt to seat cleanly.
Because there is a limited supply, you must email me direct - [email protected] - to see if I currently have any available. This part is sold through our other company and cannot be ordered through our website. Payment must be via PayPal or personal check.
NOTE - We recommend this part be installed by a qualified mechanic.
Another great restoration item.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
ORIGINAL VICTOR REINZ HEAD GASKETS (2)
We now carry the original Victor Reinz head gaskets.
Victor Reinz was the original supplier to GM for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal 3.8 SFI engines. It is also the same exact head gaskets that Richard Clark uses for all his stock and slightly-modified rebuilds. Use whatever your engine builder recommends for a highly-modified engine.
Victor Reinz is the first manufacturer to ever introduce a replacement head gasket all the way back in 1910 - and has pioneered many gasket innovations since. In 1937, Victor Reinz introduced the first non-stick coating, then followed that up 20 years later with the first no re-torque head gasket. In 1984 Victor Reinz was first with graphite head gaskets, then first again in 1992 with the Multi-Layered Steel (MLS) head gasket.
You can't go wrong by using the same head gaskets GM used originally on the 1986-1987 turbo 3.8 sfi engines.
NOTE - We recommend these head gaskets be installed by a qualified mechanic.
Another critical part for any stock or slightly-modified engine rebuild.

1969-1995 GM Cars, including 1969-1988 GM A-Body & G-Body Cars, including 1984-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
Reproduction UPGRADED UPPER STEERING COLUMN BEARING KIT
This reproduction steering bearing kit replaces the factory GM bushing kit found at the base of the main steering column. It replaces the following four GM parts: adapter #7805822, bearing #7805700, retainer #7804440, and retainer clip #7804439.
It will fit virtually every GM car from 1969 through 1995.
Ideally, you would want to replace this if you are changing the lower steering shaft, or replacing the steering coupler that attaches to the gear box. The reason is, the lower steering shaft has to be removed to slip the old bearing assembly out and install the new one. You do not have to remove the main steering shaft that this bearing kit goes on to.
This reproduction upgraded bearing kit includes everything you need and comes with the bearing already pressed into the plastic adapter. By offering it as a complete kit, it eliminates any issues with having to try to save any of the original related parts when you remove the old bearing.
Over the years, GM has used either a metal bearing or simply used a rubber-like seal that attached on each side of the plastic adapter. Our research shows that it appears GM simply used a rubber-like two-piece seal on all the 1984-1987 Regals and other G-Body cars. Other cars, such as some of the Corvettes, received the upgraded metal bearing, as did many of the GM vehicles in the early 1990s. By upgrading to a metal ball bearing format, it provides a much tighter secure fit and one that will outlast your car!
It comes with easy-to-follow directions.
Another great steering restoration item to tighten up the steering. A very inexpensive upgrade to do.
NOTE - We also offer related items - 1977-1988 GM A-Body & G-Body Cars including Buick Turbo Regal - Steering Coupler, Part #7569; and 1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal, Rebuilt Power Steering Gear Box, Part #7380.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING -
Only a few weeks until our Annual Spring Open House.
If you are coming, bring any good used parts you wish to trade or cash in, as we are a buyer if a deal can be struck. We are hoping that winter has finally gone away by our Open House.

Easily adapts from car to car.
Strong enough to use to jack up the rear end (just protect the finish).
Comes with a Manufacturer’s One-year Replacement policy.
This kit is made by HRpartsNstuff and is drop shipped from the manufacturer.
