MORE FACTORY GM 8 TRACKS -
I bought 3 more factory GM 8-tracks this past week. In this group I got one for Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Buick. Of the three only the Oldsmobile shows a production date. The date showing is 1968. The Buick one has the tri-shield logo on the cover and says “especially for you from Buick.”

TURBO REGAL POWER ANTENNAS UPDATE -
We had our son Darrell make up a sample bracket and template so these new antennas will bolt into the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, like the originals.
He installed one in a Grand National that he had painted. These new power antennas have a manufacturer’s One-year Warranty.
Antennas are actually made for another GM car. They use the same screw-in bezel that sits on the top of the fender, so you can use the original bezel. The 3-wire lead and plug is identical to the original. The new bracket will be bolted to the new antenna. A rubber boot will also come with this new power antenna to protect the motor from the elements.
We expect to have these new power antennas ready to ship before the end of November. If you place your order in advance now, the sale price is $179.95 plus $12 shipping. The retail price once they are available will be $199.95 plus shipping. We would not charge your credit card until we are able to ship the power antenna to you.
This power antenna is not on our website so you have to call and talk to Christina to get on the list if you want one. By ordering now you save $20. This also gives us a good idea on how many power antennas we need to have initially.

Remember, even if you locate a NOS AC Delco power antenna, there is a good chance the cable may already be broken internally or break shortly after you install it due to age.
PUTTING YOUR TURBO REGAL ON A DIET -
While drag racers may have different ideas on how to make more horsepower, one thing they all agree on is - if you can shed weight, it translates into horsepower.
The rule of thumb - for every 20 pounds of weight you remove, you can gain 10 horsepower. Ford is now doing this with their line of trucks by using more aluminum, which not only is cutting weight but it also increases gas mileage and increases towing capacity. It probably won’t be long before GM and Dodge start using more weight-saving aluminum in their trucks as well.
Even when Buick introduced the WE4 model, they promoted the car as being lighter and faster than a Grand National. This was due in part because of the weight difference of the factory wheels. The 1986-1987 Grand National steel wheel weighs about 28-30 lbs each. A similar year T-Type wheel weighs about 17 lbs each. This is about a 45-50 pound difference between a set of 4 Grand National wheels and a set of 4 T-Type wheels. Even the typical 16 by 8 GNX-style wheel is lighter than the Grand National steel wheel.
Another area that you can save a lot of weight is if your Turbo Regal has the aluminum front and rear reinforcement bumper braces. Although it was never listed as an option available to buyers, it is a highly-sought-after part today. I weighed a steel brace and an aluminum one last week. A steel reinforcement bumper brace weighs in at about 27-1/2 pounds. An aluminum reinforcement bumper brace weighs about 12-1/4 pounds. The trunk ID code for the front and rear aluminum reinforcement braces is VD6 and VD7.
GM also had what is called a “Canadian front reinforcement brace.” It was steel and consisted of 2 U-shaped brackets and 1 narrow long metal bar. It can be installed without using the long metal bar. Interesting enough, it weighs about 12 pounds, so it’s not any better than the aluminum reinforcement brace.
Another advantage of having the aluminum reinforcement bumper braces is the fact they will never rust!
Currently I have a rear aluminum reinforcement bumper brace that I am going to get cleaned and powder-coated before I put it up for sale. We expect to be able to show before and after pictures next week, so you can see the difference.
I have in my collection a 1987 Buick Price Guide book that dealers used, and also one for 2001. Only the Canadian bumper reinforcement braces show up in the 2001 Price Guide. This means the other versions were out of the GM parts system prior to 2001. In 1987 the steel versions listed for around $130 for the front and $160 for the rear. The aluminum versions were around $185 each for the front or rear versions. The real bargain was for the 3 part Canadian reinforcement front reinforcement bumper braces set. All 3 parts would cost you less than $50. Only the 2 U-shaped brackets appear in the 2001 Price Directory. They retailed for less than $10 per side!
Another area where aluminum was used on certain 1984-1987 Turbo Regals was the rear brake drums. They were still part steel and the outer shell was aluminum. Again this was not offered as an option to buyers when the cars were new. All the GNX cars received the aluminum reinforcement bumper braces and the aluminum brake drums. GM stamped the date of manufacture on the aluminum reinforcement bumper braces. I looked at the ones on our personal Turbo-T and the date was 02-13-87. This makes sense as our car shows a 5/87 date on the label on the doorjamb.
I have heard over the years that Buick did produce about a dozen aluminum turbo hoods for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. It seems possible since Buick made aluminum trunk lids on some of the earlier Regals. I had a 1978 Regal years ago that was a V8 car and it had an aluminum trunk lid. Some Oldsmobile Cutlass models, around the 1980 vintage, had aluminum hoods. I know this for a fact as I sold 2 Oldsmobile aluminum hoods to Brian, owner of Gbodyparts.com. I did weigh 1 of these aluminum hoods and it weighed about 22 pounds. It was easy for me to carry it by myself out of the junkyard. If it was a steel hood, I would not have been able to carry by myself very far!
These are the main areas where you can eliminate big chunks of weight from your Turbo Regal.

TURBO REGAL THOUGHTS TO PONDER -
On the 1986-1987 Grand Nationals, the power six logo appears in 3 places. In one of the places, part of the logo overlaps differently than the other two logos.
While it’s a well-known fact the 1987 Grand National was the fastest U.S. production car, the power window motors rank as one of the slowest in a US production car!

While his name Dick Maugg may not be familiar, during the 1980s his TV commercials made the Top 10 best-remembered commercials lists.
He played the fictional role of Ed Jaymes in more than 100 commercials for Bartles and Jaymes wine coolers. The Frank Bartles character did all the talking.

These are the hoses that connect the vacuum lines to the vacuum block.
It takes 3 different sizes of the vacuum hoses to complete the set.
If you are buying either of our reproduction new billet vacuum blocks, it’s best to replace the 5 rubber hoses, since the originals may be cracked. Hoses may also split when you attempt to remove them.

OEM BEARING for the Stock Belt Tensioner Pulley
We discovered that most of the aftermarket belt tensioner pulleys from the various suppliers do not match up to the original design.
The simple solution was to find the manufacturer of the actual bearing that GM used. We carry that exact bearing, made by the same manufacturer.
It is a double-sealed ball bearing.
You need to get it pressed in by someone that has a bench press. It does not require much effort to press in the new bearing.
Our photo shows an original on the lower left, this new replacement bearing on the lower right and a stock belt tensioner pulley at the top.

GREY HEADLINER & SUN VISORS MATERIAL - 3 YARDS
Over time, the headliner deteriorates or may start to sag.
We offer a reproduction grey headliner material for the 1984-1987 Buick Regals hardtop models. It will also be correct for the T-Tops models, but you’ll have extra material left over.
If you are having the interior restored, this is the time to replace the headliner.
The only sure way to get a positive color match with the sun visors is to use the same material from the same roll for the hardtop headliner and sun visors at the same time.
We only offer the correct factory grey headliner material for the Grand National and T-Type Regal hardtops.
This is the same material that our local supplier has been using for years when he does Grand National headliners.
NOTE - Colors may not appear correctly on the website due to computer monitor differences. If you would like us to send you a small piece of the material, contact our office - 215-766-1611 x 0.
According to the reference books that companies use, this is the only grey GM used during the 1980s, except for the Cadillac models.
We offer it in a 3-yard length only, which is ample material to do a hardtop headliner as well as both sun visors.
If the factory headliner board is still in good shape and not cracked or ruined, this is the best method to redo the headliner. Also plan to have the sun visors redone at the same time.
NOTE - We no longer offer the ABS pre-covered headliner shell, part #7418, as shown in the second photo.
NOTE - We recommend this headliner material be installed by an upholstery shop. You will need to have a hole cut out for the interior light.
NOTE - We recommend you also purchase Part #7362, Headliner Molding Clips (8) Set. Since the original clips are old, they may break when you remove them to install the new headliner.

UPPER DASH DUAL CONE SPEAKERS (2) SET
One of the toughest replacement speakers to find are the small ones that go in the upper dash corners. The speaker size is 3-1/2 inches.
Because of the age of these cars, the original speakers may be cracked from the heat or age.
We offer these new 3-1/2" diameter replacement dual cone speakers.
They have been tested by Richard Clark and are an excellent replacement speaker. These are a 2-way Performance Series Dual Cone Coaxial Car Speaker. You will have to modify one or both connectors on the plug end to attach the factory plug harness properly to these speakers. The plug end is basically the same, but the width is different from the original factory speakers.
If you have the Concert Sound II option in the doors, you need to order part #7689.

Even when Buick introduced the WE4 model, they promoted the car as being lighter and faster than a Grand National. This was due in part because of the weight difference of the factory wheels. The 1986-1987 Grand National steel wheel weighs about 28-30 lbs each. A similar year T-Type wheel weighs about 17 lbs each. This is about a 45-50 pound difference between a set of 4 Grand National wheels and a set of 4 T-Type wheels. Even the typical 16 by 8 GNX-style wheel is lighter than the Grand National steel wheel.
Another area that you can save a lot of weight is if your Turbo Regal has the aluminum front and rear reinforcement bumper braces. Although it was never listed as an option available to buyers, it is a highly-sought-after part today. I weighed a steel brace and an aluminum one last week. A steel reinforcement bumper brace weighs in at about 27-1/2 pounds. An aluminum reinforcement bumper brace weighs about 12-1/4 pounds. The trunk ID code for the front and rear aluminum reinforcement braces is VD6 and VD7.
GM also had what is called a “Canadian front reinforcement brace.” It was steel and consisted of 2 U-shaped brackets and 1 narrow long metal bar. It can be installed without using the long metal bar. Interesting enough, it weighs about 12 pounds, so it’s not any better than the aluminum reinforcement brace.
Another advantage of having the aluminum reinforcement bumper braces is the fact they will never rust!
Currently I have a rear aluminum reinforcement bumper brace that I am going to get cleaned and powder-coated before I put it up for sale. We expect to be able to show before and after pictures next week, so you can see the difference.
I have in my collection a 1987 Buick Price Guide book that dealers used, and also one for 2001. Only the Canadian bumper reinforcement braces show up in the 2001 Price Guide. This means the other versions were out of the GM parts system prior to 2001. In 1987 the steel versions listed for around $130 for the front and $160 for the rear. The aluminum versions were around $185 each for the front or rear versions. The real bargain was for the 3 part Canadian reinforcement front reinforcement bumper braces set. All 3 parts would cost you less than $50. Only the 2 U-shaped brackets appear in the 2001 Price Directory. They retailed for less than $10 per side!
Another area where aluminum was used on certain 1984-1987 Turbo Regals was the rear brake drums. They were still part steel and the outer shell was aluminum. Again this was not offered as an option to buyers when the cars were new. All the GNX cars received the aluminum reinforcement bumper braces and the aluminum brake drums. GM stamped the date of manufacture on the aluminum reinforcement bumper braces. I looked at the ones on our personal Turbo-T and the date was 02-13-87. This makes sense as our car shows a 5/87 date on the label on the doorjamb.
I have heard over the years that Buick did produce about a dozen aluminum turbo hoods for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. It seems possible since Buick made aluminum trunk lids on some of the earlier Regals. I had a 1978 Regal years ago that was a V8 car and it had an aluminum trunk lid. Some Oldsmobile Cutlass models, around the 1980 vintage, had aluminum hoods. I know this for a fact as I sold 2 Oldsmobile aluminum hoods to Brian, owner of Gbodyparts.com. I did weigh 1 of these aluminum hoods and it weighed about 22 pounds. It was easy for me to carry it by myself out of the junkyard. If it was a steel hood, I would not have been able to carry by myself very far!
These are the main areas where you can eliminate big chunks of weight from your Turbo Regal.

OEM BEARING for the Stock Belt Tensioner Pulley
We discovered that most of the aftermarket belt tensioner pulleys from the various suppliers do not match up to the original design.
The simple solution was to find the manufacturer of the actual bearing that GM used. We carry that exact bearing, made by the same manufacturer.
It is a double-sealed ball bearing.
You need to get it pressed in by someone that has a bench press. It does not require much effort to press in the new bearing.
Our photo shows an original on the lower left, this new replacement bearing on the lower right and a stock belt tensioner pulley at the top.

Over time, the headliner deteriorates or may start to sag.
We offer a reproduction grey headliner material for the 1984-1987 Buick Regals hardtop models. It will also be correct for the T-Tops models, but you’ll have extra material left over.
If you are having the interior restored, this is the time to replace the headliner.
The only sure way to get a positive color match with the sun visors is to use the same material from the same roll for the hardtop headliner and sun visors at the same time.
We only offer the correct factory grey headliner material for the Grand National and T-Type Regal hardtops.
This is the same material that our local supplier has been using for years when he does Grand National headliners.
NOTE - Colors may not appear correctly on the website due to computer monitor differences. If you would like us to send you a small piece of the material, contact our office - 215-766-1611 x 0.
According to the reference books that companies use, this is the only grey GM used during the 1980s, except for the Cadillac models.
We offer it in a 3-yard length only, which is ample material to do a hardtop headliner as well as both sun visors.
If the factory headliner board is still in good shape and not cracked or ruined, this is the best method to redo the headliner. Also plan to have the sun visors redone at the same time.
NOTE - We no longer offer the ABS pre-covered headliner shell, part #7418, as shown in the second photo.
NOTE - We recommend this headliner material be installed by an upholstery shop. You will need to have a hole cut out for the interior light.

UPPER DASH DUAL CONE SPEAKERS (2) SET
One of the toughest replacement speakers to find are the small ones that go in the upper dash corners. The speaker size is 3-1/2 inches.
Because of the age of these cars, the original speakers may be cracked from the heat or age.
We offer these new 3-1/2" diameter replacement dual cone speakers.
They have been tested by Richard Clark and are an excellent replacement speaker. These are a 2-way Performance Series Dual Cone Coaxial Car Speaker. You will have to modify one or both connectors on the plug end to attach the factory plug harness properly to these speakers. The plug end is basically the same, but the width is different from the original factory speakers.
If you have the Concert Sound II option in the doors, you need to order part #7689.
