04-11-2012 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 04-11-2012

FOLLOW UP TO LAST WEEK'S INNER CIRCLE -

Last week under the heading "On the News Front," we wrote about an article in Hemmings Muscle Machines on Alan Olefield's 1976 Buick Century Replica Pace Car. It's a very unique vehicle. Since then I have looked through some of my Hurst literature and I found I have a Buick manual that is specifically for Buick Hurst/Hatch Roofs 1975-1976 entitled, "Buick Water Leak Diagnosis and Repair Manual for Hurst/Hatch Roof 1975-1976." This manual runs about 16 pages in length.

PHOTO 1 - We show the cover of this 35-year-old manual in the top left photo. It is kind of dirty, so you can tell it has been well used at some Buick dealership back in the day!

The top right photo shows the Table of Contents page. It is quite interesting as each chapter refers to where the water is coming in. One chapter covers water leaking down the door panels, another chapter covers water coming in from the headliner, and another refers to water coming in from the latch cover, and so on.

Basically, as any T-Tops owner can attest to, water runs down hill, and the material backing found under factory carpets work as a sponge and retains moisture long after it has stopped raining!

The lower photos show two facing pages from this mini manual, complete with photos.

MORE GNX COLLECTIBLES -

In last week's Inner Circle, we wrote about the handcrafted wood Grand Nationals and GNXs we had produced in very limited quantities.

Back in our 1994 catalog, we offered a GNX etched lead crystal Iceberg, which measured 4-1/4" high by 3/4" wide and about 1" thick. In my personal collection I have one of them plus I have another one that is 7" wide by 5" high and 1". I must have also gotten a sample done of the larger one. Probably because of the price, we decided to only market the smaller one.

It featured line art of a GNX along with the quote, "A HIGH-PERFORMANCE INVESTMENT FOR THE FORTUNATE 547!"

PHOTO 2 - The top photo shows both GNX etched lead crystal icebergs from my private collection. The etching on the lead crystal is hard to photograph, so we photographed them on a black background. The lower left photo shows my wife's original mechanical artwork that was reproduced on the lead crystal. The last photo shows the description from the 1994 catalog, which carried a price of just $21.95. Unfortunately, I did not keep track of how many of these we sold back in 1994, but I know we sold more of these than we did of the handcrafted wooded GNXs.

NEW GNX PENCIL DRAWING -

This new pencil drawing of a GNX heading down the dragstrip has amazing details and is now bring offered in a limited run of 547 numbered prints. You can request whatever GNX number you wish, as long as it has not already been sold.

The prints are 11" x 14", and can be ordered by email from Ron and Tracy Monroe. Their email is - [email protected]. The price is just $39.95 shipped.

Ron has donated one of these prints for our Open House raffle this coming Saturday.

BREAKING NEWS FOR OUR OPEN HOUSE - THIS SATURDAY !

Latest weather forecast is sunny.

Our source has shipped us our initial order of the new reproduction upper dash panels and they should be here in time. We will have a few available for immediate pick up at our Open House.

AVAILABLE AT OUR SPRING KIRBAN PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS OPEN HOUSE -
THIS COMING - SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 2012 - 9 am until 3 pm.

NEW ITEMS ON DISPLAY AT OUR OPEN HOUSE -

We will have several new products available at our Open House

The first two are products, which I personally use. One is called "Safest Rust Remover" and the other is called "Ultra One Heavy Duty Degreaser." Both are made by the same company and are available pre-mixed in one-gallon containers.

The Safest Rust Remover does all the work of removing rust without risking distorting the part being cleaned. The solution does all the work! You simply let the part(s) sit in the solution. The product is non-toxic, has no odor, and can be safely disposed of down the drain.

We will show you the results at our Open House.

We also will have their other product available called the "Ultra One Heavy Duty Degreaser." This is the same product they use to clean the interior walls of the Lincoln Tunnel in New York. You can imagine how dirty that tunnel gets, especially with the amount of traffic that passes thru the tunnel just on one single day! I would not even want to walk through that tunnel!

Like their other products, this one virtually has no smell and is non-toxic. It's mild enough that you can actually use it to clean your hands! Both products are part of my home garage supplies. Both these items will be available shortly on our website.

Also on display will be our new all-aluminum driveshaft. This driveshaft has a 3-1/2" diameter tube versus the stock 3" tube. It is made from Alcoa #6061 aluminum, used specifically for driveshaft tubes. Each driveshaft comes with new Spicer sealed universal joints and a new Neapco yoke. You will be able to see first hand the difference between this driveshaft and a stock steel 25-year-old GM driveshaft.

This driveshaft has several major benefits, besides obviously looking better and never rusting. It is balanced within the weight of a single postage stamp, it weighs almost 3 pounds less than your factory steel driveshaft, the welds are far superior, and the ears where the universal joints are pressed in are thicker. Your stock driveshaft is just over 16 lbs and this one is just over 13 lbs. This driveshaft will handle up to 700 to 750 hp, providing the angle between the tail shaft of the transmission and the rear is almost straight. The more severe the angle between the two points, the more stress is placed on the universal joints, which can bind and cause breakage. In 20 years of production, they have never had a driveshaft break! Quality is evident!

The company explained to me the method GM uses to balance drive shafts. They weld on a weight, and if it's too much, they then weld another weight on the opposite side to counter it. The end result is more weights. So, depending on how good a guess the first weight is welded on will depend on how much weight the second welded weight will be! Also, GM does not get it balanced as good as these custom driveshafts. Remember, GM built our driveshafts for mass production. These new custom driveshafts are built one at a time with more attention to quality welds and balance.

The total diameter is 1/2" wider, which means it's 1/4" wider on each side. This may not fit with some of the aftermarket driveshaft loops, which may be on your car.

This company has been making driveshafts for over 20 years. Each one is custom made in the U.S.A. This will be available shortly on our website and for mail order. The price is $439.95 and $19 UPS ground shipping.

PHOTO 4 - Here is a photo of this new "Made in the USA" driveshaft. We will have several available at our Open House this Saturday. The second photo shows a close up of the flange area compared to a stock flange on an original Turbo Regal driveshaft. You can see the difference in the thickness on the flange of the aluminum driveshaft compared to the GM steel original flange area where the universal joint is pressed in. This is another product that has many benefits and no down side!

FERDINAND PORSCHE DIES AT AGE 76 -

You probably saw this in your newspaper. Ferdinand Porsche died at age 76. He created the 911 Porsche. Now the 911 is in its 7th generation and will set you back about $115,000 in U.S. dollars. No matter what performance car you fancy in life, it's hard not to like a Porsche. Anyone would make room for one in their garage.

I can remember years ago, around 1979-1980, we had a very, very fast Ram Air 1967 Firebird. The car had all the latest Pontiac upgrades I was able to find... factory Pontiac long brand headers, aluminum 455 intake 3.55 posi, 4 speed, ram air, and ram air IV quadrajet.

I remember taking on a Porsche at a traffic light and while my tires spun with ease, the Porsche just was planted to the ground and took off with virtually no wheel spin. Needless to say, I never challenged a Porsche again from a dead stop!

Porsche is one car company that always seemed to go for the performance approach and handling aspect, rather than satisfy the masses.

Years ago one of my friends toured the Porsche factory. During the tour, they were told, "If any factory engine was even one horsepower under specs, it got torn down." Personally, I like the little Boxster S models from 2001-2003.

DUSTED OFF OUR TURBO-T -

With our Open House this Saturday, I took the blankets off our Turbo-T, disconnected the battery tender, and drove it for the first time in about 5 months. The Sunoco gas station at Davisville Road and Street Road in Warminster, PA sells 100 proof octane for $7.99 a gallon and 93 octane for $4.09. You can mix both in the tank and it makes a huge difference in how your Turbo Regal runs.

SLP FIREBIRD FORMULA - FOR SALE - NEW LOWER PRICE -

This car is still available at $19,500. This is for the 400-mile red 2002 SLP Formula Firebird we pictured in the 11-16-2011 Inner Circle. This car will be finding a new home at some point.

ALWAYS IN A BUYING POSITION WORKS -

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected].

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected].
