04-01-2020 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 04-01-2020 –

BREAKING NEWS –

I just got word yesterday that Cardone Industries is shutting down the division at their Philadelphia location that rebuilds our powermaster brake units for 45 days. I am hopeful to at least get the few units I need to return to the people that have warranty units with us.

At this point, we are NOT accepting any cores nor any warranty units until further notice.

Powermaster brake units have always been problematic, almost since new. If you have any hopes of driving your car when this virus is under control, I strongly suggest you look at other brake systems.

MORE BREAKING NEWS - GS NATS 2020 ARE CANCELLED –

I just read last night they reached a decision and the GS Nationals for 2020 in Bowling Green, Kentucky has been cancelled, due to the situation across our nation. They will be posting a new date in 2021 in a few short weeks.

UPDATE – KIRBAN PERFORMANCE IS SHIPPING ORDERS –

We are still able to ship orders. Getting supplies is starting to become an issue. We will continue to fill orders, however some incoming stock of parts may be delayed. Special thanks to all the truckers and delivery services that continue to serve our nation across the miles.

NOTE - We are closing the Post Office box in Plumsteadville, so any correspondence, returns or incoming orders MUST be shipped to Kirban Performance Products, 529 Haycock Run Road, Kintnersville, PA 18930, effective immediately.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL SPARK PLUG WIRES –

One product that has been quite successful for us over the years has been the custom-made 1986-1987 plug wires for the Turbo Regals, part #1531. In looking through our old catalogs, it appears we first had them made back in 1992! For several years, we even made the 1984-1985 custom-fit plug wires. These were discontinued years ago due to lack of demand.

The 1986-1987 plug wires are grey, like the originals, with the proper black boots on both ends. The critical thing is that they are the proper lengths to avoid any issues with rubbing the plenum or falling over and getting burned on the exhaust manifolds.

Our source started making GTO date-coded plug wires for us way back in the early 1980s, so it was easy to add this product as well. I then sold the GTO part of the business and they just make the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal plug wires for us now. At one point, maybe 10 years ago, we did have a print wheel made that said, “B-B-B BAD TO THE BONE” and offered wires with that wording on them.

Years ago, ATR also made custom-fit plug wires and I think, going by memory, they said “Turbo” on them. They were black.

When Pontiac came out with the Turbo Trans Am, those wires were imprinted “20th Anniversary” or words to that affect. I can recall even buying new Trans Am plug wires in the box and some had the imprint on them. Those would be extremely rare today. I never bought imprinted Turbo Regal wires in the box from GM. There is one company that makes the imprinted wires for the Turbo Regal. A costly project because you would have to commit to running a large number of feet for each number 1 thru 6, and it would be very costly.

Our wires are a nice alternative because they are the proper length, color, and are made by a major supplier to the Nascar race teams. Our part number is #1531 and the set sells for $62.95.

We also sell a set of the special 5 GM holders that secure the plug wires, part #6803 for $8.95. Both items are currently in stock. These have always been a good seller for us. The key factors are that they look original and fit like original.

PHOTO 1 – We show a set of our 1986-1987 custom-fit grey plug wires on the left and show an engine compartment that has a very ill-fitting set of plug wires on the right.

BACKTRACKING TO LAST WEEK –

In Photo 2 in last week’s Inner Circle we showed 4 different Turbo Regals taken at various times on my open trailer from various parts of the country. The one photo in front of a building with the flag flying shows a grey Turbo-T on my trailer.

My first vehicle I used for towing was a 1997 Dodge Dakota powered by a V8. It was this very road trip, probably within an hour of that photo being taken, that I had a young guy pass me then slam on his brakes to make a quick left hand turn. Unfortunately, I was not able to stop and a guard rail was to my right. This left me no choice, so I braced myself for the impact and slammed into the back of his sedan.

The impact busted up the front end of my truck, and the air bag went off bruising my arm. His car suffered major damage to the back end. Neither of us was really hurt. The grey Turbo-T did not budge on the trailer, which was fortunate for me. This all happened in the western part of Ohio, three days prior to Thanksgiving.

I got towed to a body shop. As you know, the storage fees start to tick every day that your car or truck sits at one of those yards. In my case, it was double as I had a truck and trailer. I had to think fast as to what to do. I called the dealership that I had the license with and had them fax me a temporary registration paper so I could put my truck tag on the back of the Turbo-T. My plan was to drive it home, borrow my son’s truck, and come back for my truck and trailer. I would put my truck on my trailer and tow it home using my son’s truck. The immediate problem was that the grey T I had bought had been sitting for several years not used. I was unsure how dependable it would run on an 8-10 hour trip.

Not only that, but I knew according to the weather report, I would run into rain part of the way. At first the car ran terrible as if the tires were not round and it lacked the power a turbo car normally would have. (Remember, I have no mechanical skills.) However, by the second and third hour of the trip at constant turnpike speeds, the Turbo-T started to run a lot better. I made the trip without incident and rescued my truck and trailer the day before to Thanksgiving.

It was probably good that I drove the Turbo-T for 8 hours straight, because when I sold it I told the potential buyer I had a lot of seat time in this car and could verify the car ran great.

As for my Dakota truck, it did not do quite as well. Upon close inspection by Darrell, he discovered the frame was buckled under the bed. This was probably from the loaded trailer weight getting jolted. The value of the truck versus the repair cost made the insurance company total it. On the plus side, and this is very unusual, the insurance company paid me extremely well for the truck because it was in such good condition. This was probably around 1990 timeframe.

FROM MY MEMORY FILE OF PHOTOS –

With more free time at home because of this virus, I have finally put all my photos that I have taken over the last 35-plus years together in one place.

I have probably mentioned this before. We all know or should know that one of the rarest, if not rarest, exterior color on a Turbo Regal was called “Light Sage Metallic.” The code was 43. The only exterior color that would be rarer is one I have never seen and that would be a custom color from another GM car. Buick offered that but I have never seen one and nobody has ever told me they have seen one where a Turbo Regal was ordered with a GM color other than a stock Regal color. Had the internet been up and running the mid-1980s, I am sure potential buyers would have explored other possibilities from the Buick offerings at the time.

The other two rare exterior colors on a Turbo-T in 1987 would be light brown metallic and brown metallic. I have owned one of the regular brown metallic and none of the light brown metallic, from what I recall. Again, back then when I was buying these cars I never paid much attention to the rarity of certain colors. If the car was nice, and I could strike a deal, and I bought it. Color never was a deciding factor. I did learn rather quickly that the W4s, since they resembled a Grand National, were very much in demand so I did buy a number of them over the buying years.

It is a far different story today. You simply type in a few words on a computer and instantly you learn quickly what is rare and what the values are for virtually anything you are looking to buy. The downside is 30-plus years have passed, so weeding out the marginal cars versus the nice ones can be frustrating even with up-to-date photos. I had the advantage since the cars were not that old when I was buying them and buyers knew it would be very tough to hide any issues their car may have from me because of the knowledge I had about these cars.

Of the 325-plus Turbo Regals that have passed through my hands, I have owned 2 of the extremely rare light sage metallic color Turbo-Ts - One being a rare Turbo-T Limited that was shown for many years at the GS Nationals. (I bought that one.) Last I heard it resides in Ohio. Ironically, that is also where the seller lived when I bought it originally. The lesser-known light sage metallic Turbo-T was a bare bones version with a split bench seat that was at best in fair condition. I purchased this right after 9/11 from a seller in New York that was moving out of New York and needed money for his move. What was nice about this purchase is that the seller even delivered the car to my house.

If I recall, the car was mostly, if not all stock. Until I sorted my photos I did not realize I even had a photo of this unique car. The photo depicts the buyer alongside the light sage metallic Turbo-T in front of my 5-bay garage at our old house. What is even more interesting is the buyer was a long-time GTO customer of mine. The buyer always told me that light sage metallic Turbo-T was extremely quick as he had driven other Turbo Regals.

A few years later he sent me a photo of him with Miss Hurst alongside his 1965 GTO at a race track. The owner’s name escapes me, but I do recall he lives in the Carolinas. It’s been many years since I last heard from him. With that being said, possibly somewhere in the Carolinas you may see a light sage metallic 1987 Turbo-T.

PHOTO 2 – The one photo shows the buyer alongside his newly purchased light sage metallic Turbo-T on our driveway. A few years later he sent me a photo of himself alongside Miss Hurst with his 1965 GTO, almost with the same exact pose. I also found one single photo of the only brown 1987 Turbo-T that I owned. I had also bought a WE4 from that same person within a few years. Remembering an exact timetable on cars I bought is tough to do.

COLLECTIBLE HATS FOR SALE –

While going through more of my collectibles I came across the 4 hats shown in the Photo 3. All 4 of these are in the Rare Parts section for sale. The rarest one would be the white embroidered hat that was done for the 1992 Kirban Reunion. It features both a GTO and a Grand National on the front. Alongside it is a Kirban Reunion hat from 2007. What may not be visible is that it has been autographed on the brim by Molly. The other photo shows a GM Carlisle Nationals hat from a few years ago. I was a speaker at that event. Also, a Dodge SRT Hellcat hat. Both these hats are also embroidered and are brand new, never worn.

PHOTO 3 – The photo to the left shows both the 1992 embroidered Kirban Reunion hat and the embroidered 2007 Kirban Reunion hat. That hat has been autographed by Molly on the brim. The photo to the right shows the Carlisle GM Nationals and the Dodge SRT Hellcat embroidered hat. Those two hats are brand new.

IF WE COULD JUST TURN BACK THE CLOCK –

During these stressful uncertain times, it sure would be nice if we could “turn back the clock.” I found these four photos that date back to a happier time when these cars were new.

PHOTO 4 – The top left and top right photos show a Grand National that was not yet dealer prepped. The top right shows a GNX dash with the protective coating still intact. In both cases, you can almost smell that new car smell. The bottom left photo shows a postcard dated 1989 inviting Turbo Regal owners to join the Grand National Performance Club of America. The bottom right shows Conley’s world famous “Tweaked” on our driveway prior to one of our airbase Reunion events, either 1991 or 1992. It made me stop and think, for a regular two-lane residential road just how many different Turbo Regals came up my old street, 1482 Sugar Bottom Road, Furlong, PA. The house today is deserted and in serious neglect. It is a real shame. My guess is the neighbors probably really miss us.

STORIES THAT CAUGHT MY INTEREST THIS PAST WEEK –

Looking ahead, when this virus has been eliminated, one commentator wondered, “What will seating be like in food places, stadiums airplanes and theaters.” Would they remove every other seat or, in the case of food places, remove 30% of their tables? Makes you wonder going forward what it will be like.

It’s important you exercise patience when ordering parts from any of your favorite vendors. The supply chain has been vastly interrupted and deliveries have been slowed for a multitude of reasons.

CARS FOR SALE -

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FACTORY ASTRO ROOF CF5 ROLLER – FOR SALE -

This is a well optioned 1987 Grand National minus the drivetrain is being offered for sale. I am selling the car as a roller with no motor/transmission. The car l come with wiring harness installed. Overall the interior is in very good condition. New seta covers from PUI have been installed, as well as a new headliner and new sun visors.

Odometer shows 68,XXX miles. Nearly rust free. The doors, frame etc, are all solid. Car has a few door dings, and a slight rust spot on the trunk lid. Unfortunately, someone has removed the door locks, but did a nice job. Factory GN wheels are included with the car. The wheels are in fair condition. With very minimal work, the car would be very presentable. The reason for selling the Grand National is I have found a T-Type roller and I plan to put my built drivetrain into this car instead.

Asking $8995. Located in Port Trevorton, PA which is about 40 miles north of Carlisle Fairgrounds. Will deliver within 100 miles.

Call Ben at 570-847-4438. 2 of 2 weeks.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL - FOR SALE – SALE PENDING

This refurbished 1987 Grand National is local to us. The seller has purchased many of the parts from us to refurbish this 1987 Grand National. Options include - T-Tops, power seat, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, power windows, posi rear, power antenna (works), and power locks. It has a later GM factory am/fm CD player. The actual miles are 69,000.

The trunk ID label is untouched, spare and jack appear to have never been used. The car spent most of its life in Texas with the previous owner. The car has only been driven about 500 miles since 1993, according to the Texas inspection and paperwork. The tires look brand new, but are over 20 years old and need to be replaced! Car is 99.9% stock. The only two non-original items I spotted under the hood are injectors and the plug wires. The air box, and intercooler hoses are factory stock.

The seller gave the car a professional fresh repaint, even going as far as redoing all the trim in the correct satin black, including the grille, headlight bezels, and all the moldings. All the weather strips are new as is the hood insulation pad. The gas tank has been dropped and cleaned. Also, a fresh tune up and gas filter. Car has all the original wheels and center caps.

The interior is all original and in very good condition showing virtually no wear at all. You do have the typical sun fade due to the car having T-Tops and spending most of its life in Texas.

The doors shut like new. I drove this Grand National and it is extremely tight and rattle free. The transmission shifts nice and crisp. The age of the tires becomes evident at highway speeds. You can clearly tell this Grand National has never been run hard and having less than 70,000 miles on a 35-year-old car is low miles. The seller has gone to great extent to make the exterior like new and original in all aspects. The interior is virtually like new. Under the hood needs to be detailed as does the frame and suspension. The seller has paperwork going back to when the car was in Texas. The car was actually bought used from O’Neil Buick/GMC, which is the same dealership that handled all my 325-plus transactions! In Photo 1 we show 4 photos of this 1987 Grand National.

This stock appearing Grand National has an asking price of $21,900. For more photos, email me direct – [email protected]

1985 REGAL LIMITED CHEVY V8 POWERED - STILL AVAILABLE - FOR SALE –

One of our relatives local to us is having us sell their custom-built 1985 Regal Limited that has been in the family since new. This 1985 Regal Limited has always been garaged, never hit, or smoked in. Our son Darrell repainted this car the factory color back in 2003 for $2,000. At 128,000 miles, the engine was converted with a brand GM 350/330 HP crate motor at a cost of $5,200. This was backed up with a rebuilt turbo 400 transmission. A local shop that we deal with redid the rear putting in a new eaton posi with, I believe, to be 3.08 gears. Gear ratio is perfect for high speed cruising.

Being a Limited, it is very well optioned and even the power antenna works. It has Bilstein shocks. Tires are fairly new. The tire size is 205/75 by 14s. Riding on the original 14 by 6 steel wheels with full Regal wheel covers.

With just a few Turbo Regal upgrades this would be an extremely nice solid handling Regal. I you install set of 16 by 8s on all four corners, a Turbo-T steering box, a rear sway bar, and a leather wheel, it will not only ride better, but look better too. The doors shut like they are brand new. The driver’s power pillow seat is the only interior part that shows very minor wear along the edge and around the power switch. A set of tasteful 3 gauges hang of the bottom edge of the dash under the radio. The power seat motor runs but does not function. Headliner will need to be replaced. The steering column has movement in the one section of the tilt.

The current mileage is 135,000, so that is less than 10,000 miles on a brand new GM crate motor. Electric fan with a V8 radiator handles the cooling. The AC has been completely rebuilt. Car has long-branch headers that dump into a new GNX exhaust system. Bigger front sway bar was installed. MSD ignition and an Edelbrock 4-barrell carburetor are fed with a cold air system. The adult owner has never once driven it hard to chirp the tires. Car still has its original half-padded roof. Body and paint are real nice with zero rust. All the stainless and emblems are in good condition. Nothing is missing. Bumpers also are close to new. All the critical labels are still intact, including the SPID label on the inside trunk lid. This car is a bargain and has had excellent care since new.

NEW LOWER PRICE $5,995 - OBO

The owner needs to sell the car. The body is exceptional with near perfect chrome, and all the stainless is nice. The car is at our house. For more photos, email me direct - [email protected]

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Reproduction GRAND NATIONAL FENDER & TRUNK EMBLEMS

We are now offering high-quality reproduction Grand National emblems for the front fenders and trunk lid. All 1986-1987 GNs used three emblems; one on each fender and one on the driver’s side trunk lid. The 1984-1985 GNs only used two emblems; one on each fender.

This striking silver, red, orange and black enamel-like finish emblem measures 5-3/8" x 1-7/8" and comes with a self-adhesive backing.

NOTE - If you need to replace an emblem on your car, it’s best to replace all three at the same time so they all look new.

Emblems also make a great addition to any car show display board.

Another excellent replacement for any exterior restoration.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING –

Not sure of the percentages of wishes that come true, so maybe prayer would be a better means of this virus to disappear from the World.
