HURRICANE SANDY PACKS A WALLOP -
(Written Monday morning) As all of you know by now, Hurricane Sandy hit with a vengeance last week, redistributing the coastal areas of New Jersey and New York. Our hearts go out to the areas that were devastated by "Storm of the Century."
The high winds (55 to 75 mph) also hit inland. The areas where our office/warehouse and our house is located in Pennsylvania were hit by raging wind and rain. We are only about a 2-1/2 hour drive from the Jersey shore.
We had high winds all night long during the storm. Our house literally vibrated.
Our office was virtually shut down all last week with no electric or phone/internet service. It came on intermittently toward the end of the week. We finally had stable service on Monday and are in the process of getting back to everyone.
Our house and our son's house are still without power. Thankfully we both have generators, which gives us some light and keeps the refrigerators running. There are many huge trees downed in our area, which has knocked out power lines. More than a week without electric service is not fun!
Our local gas station got 3 deliveries of fuel a day by tanker truck to meet the demand of customers filling their cars and gas cans for generators. I imagine they needed a Brinks truck every day to haul the money to the bank. There were lines of cars there all week, but people seemed to be very patient in our area.
We are quite fortunate compared to many others. No one was hurt. We only lost a few big trees that missed the buildings. We both had some damage and shingles came off our roofs. We spent many hours, cutting up trees, picking up branches and hauling it to the woods.
We appreciate everyone's patience. I was not able to even look at the internet or television news for an entire week because of no power or cable connections. It's amazing how many DVDs one can watch and magazines you can read over the course of a week!
AN UPDATE -
Just got word (Tuesday afternoon) that our power is back on, finally after 8 days. But we're expecting snow today...hopefully the electric will stay on.
Here's a quick humorous story for all you pet lovers.
We have one inside cat and two cats that that live in our pole building. All 3 we brought up from our old house. When the neighbor died several years ago, we adopted (rather started to feed) his 3 outside cats. It took awhile but they come to me and I can pet them most times. One of them is probably 90% stone deaf and never, ever even makes a sound.
Monday night I came home with my usual 5-gallon containers of fuel for the generator. I left my trunk open to air out the fumes. I then closed it and went to my son's house and then to the nearby mini mart to get a hamburger and case of bottled water.
At the mini mart I opened the trunk to put in the case of bottle water and out pops the deaf cat. So here I am in the parking lot trying to figure out how to catch the cat that I have never been able to hold or pet. He quickly ran around the back of the mini mart because of all the people and cars. I then drove around the back of the mini mart and started to coax him with bits of hamburger trying to get him to jump into the trunk again... After about 25 minutes of fruitless attempts I had no luck.
I couldn't abandon him, so I figured I would tempt him with another morsel of hamburger and grab him quickly by the back of his neck and get him back in the trunk. It finally worked.
He is now safely back home with his two siblings.
The moral of the story - I will always check my cars prior to shutting the doors or trunk!
Because he is deaf and never made a sound during the entire drive, I didn't have a clue he was in the trunk. His name is "The Deaf One." Fortunately he's back, safe and sound.
True story!
MY STORY ABOUT LIGHT BLUE T-TYPES / TURBO-Ts -
As we noted in the previous Inner Circle (10-24-12) under Photo 3, the color light blue is quite rare to see today. I personally think it is one of the best looking of the rare colors. The code for the light blue color available on the Regals was "22" for the 1984 model and "25" for 1985, 1986, and 1987.
As many of you know, we sold just over 300 of the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals during the late 1980s and through the 1990s. In all those examples, I only recall having one light blue 1986 T-Type. I did sell one light blue 1987 Turbo-T on consignment. The owner of the 1987 Turbo-T at the time lived in Virginia and now resides in Montana and remains a customer of ours. It's probably the only light blue example in the state of Montana!
I remember the 1986 light blue T-Type because it had a factory astro roof option as well. It was wintertime when I had the car, so I stored it at my neighbor's house. Every winter our neighbor would go to their winter home in Naples, Florida and gave me their garage to use as long as I promised to rotate their cars on their driveway. This gave the appearance that someone was home!
I had a buyer come who specifically was looking for a Grand National to buy. At the time I think I had two of them. I told this customer ahead of time I had a pretty nice looking light blue T-Type for sale. They said they had no interest, they only wanted a Grand National. Well once they showed up at our house I also showed them the light blue 1986 T-Type that I had at the neighbor's house. Once he saw it, he bought the light blue 1986 T-Type!
My point? Keep an open mind. While it's true Grand Nationals are higher on the value chain, it's neat to also consider a color that today is quite rare. You never know until you see the car in person.
Years ago I was fortunate enough to get a complete set of original Buick Salesmen pocket booklets, which included a handy full-color brochure showing all the colors for each particular year and the code for each color. These are next to impossible to find today. It basically was a mini Buick Dealer album, which the sales personal could carry in his suit pocket for quick reference. Today some printed brochures have been replaced by computers.
PHOTO 1 - In the top left photo we show the Exterior Color brochure for 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987 Buick line up. In 1985, for some reason Buick broke down the exterior color brochures into 3 different ones to show the various models. In 1986, for the Riviera model, they had a separate exterior color brochure. In the bottom photo we show the 1986 Exterior color brochure fully opened so you can see all the available colors and notations dictating which colors where available on which models. To the far right on this page shows all the vinyl top colors. Of course on the Turbo Regals in 1986, you could not get a vinyl top. In 1987 a vinyl top was offered on the Limited Turbo-T.
What is also interesting on the color chart is the Regal T-Type is a separate category from the Regal. For example, going by this chart the color sage green was available in 1986 on the Regal but not on the Regal T-Type. In the 1987 Exterior Color Chart all the Regals are listed under one category. This same information as I noted can also be found in the full-size 3-ring binder, known as the Dealer Album.
MORE INFORMATION ON THE T-TYPE EMBLEMS -
Again from my private collection. We have a few more T-Type emblems.
PHOTO 2 - We show 3 more T-Type emblems. The top emblem is one of the smallest that Buick used. This one was used on the 1987-1989 LeSabre T-Types. It was attached to the pillar on both sides behind the door. It measures just under 2" in length.
I have no idea what year and what Buick model the middle emblem came on. I am guessing it is an interior dash emblem on one of the T-Type Buick models. This emblem is metal and measures about 3" long by ¾" tall. We welcome any answers on knowing where and on what car this emblem was used on by Buick.
The bottom emblem in this photo obviously was used on a LeSabre model. It is also metal and is about 6" in length. Like the Century T-Type emblem, this emblem is all one piece with the T-Type wording under the model name. I am not sure what year LeSabre this emblem would be for.
I was lucky to have gotten these emblems years ago. Finding any of the various T-Types of the other Buick models is next to impossible to find today, even in the junkyards in my area.
It’s interesting to note, during the 1980s Buick used different materials when making their emblems; some were plastic and some were metal. Had the hood emblems been metal, most of you would not have broken off the number 3 of the 3.8 hood emblem at some point in time!
A local friend of mine remembers his brother purchased a new Turbo Regal back in 1987 and the car had a Buick license plate on the front.
PHOTO 3 - Here is a reproduction of the Buick license plate that was on my friend's brother's 1987 Turbo Regal. Do any of my readers remember this Buick plate? Most of you know that the Regals had a special bracket that attached to the front bumper by 2 ten-millimeter screws. This small bracket allowed a front plate to be attached to the front bumper. If you do not use this bracket and attach a license plate to the front bumper by itself, you end up bending the plate. Buick had 2 white plastic spacers that snapped into the top holes in the front bumper to space out a front license plate to prevent the plate from getting bent.
The front license plate bracket usually came in a manila envelope and was tucked into the spare tire well, if it was not used originally. A part number was stamped on the manila envelope.
Of course in my state, Pennsylvania, they never issued front license plates so the bracket was seldom seen on our cars.
MORE MEMORIES FROM PREVIOUS COMPANIES -
While I was looking for the above brochures I found an old catalog for Poston and Bowling Green Customs in my collection.
PHOTO 4 - The left photo shows the cover of a 2005 Poston catalog. Poston's was located in Atmore, Alabama. Over the years, the ownership of Poston changed hands several times before closing down several years ago.
The right photo shows the cover of a Bowling Green Customs catalog from January 1993. This is when it was under the second ownership and was located in Roswell, Georgia. Although it was now in Georgia, they retained the name Bowling Green Customs. Like Poston, it also shut down several years ago.
TEXAS AUTOBAHN -
By now most of you have seen the information about the 41-mile stretch in Texas that now has the highest speed limit in the country - 85 mph. Years ago, I believe Montana was the last state to basically have no speed limit. We have come a long way since the Nixon years, when 55 mph was the maximum. That's something that serves as a constant reminder in your analog dash in your Turbo Regal - The number "55" in a different color.
I can see it now, every tuner located anywhere near that area of Texas now has a legitimate test track to test their wares.
0-60 TIMES THE BENCHMARK FOR CAR REVIEWS -
As far back as I can remember, 0-60 time was always one of the bench marks for reviews on cars. Even during the Nixon years it never changed. A fairly quick car would cover the 0-60 times in a mid-to-high 6-second range. Today some super cars are doing it in the 4.1 to 4.3 range and even quicker.
What caught my eye the other day in an article is the spin this writer put on the 0-60 times for a certain car model that took over 13 seconds to hit 60 mph. He said it hit 60 mph at a "leisurely pace!" I can imagine how long it would take to hit the 85 mph mark if 60 happened at a leisurely pace. Maybe have the seconds converted into minutes!

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected].

IN CLOSING -
They called it the "Storm of the Century," so if that is true, hopefully I won't see another one in my lifetime!
