CUSTOM-MADE GRAND NATIONAL DIECAST MODEL -
In our June 29th, 2011 Inner Circle we showed a unique rough-looking 1987 Grand National diecast model in 1:18 scale. The company made just 12 of these.
This same company, Backyard Conversions, has also made a 1987 Grand National convertible diecast in the same 1:18 scale. Their website is - www.backyardconversions.com. When you go to their website, click on heading, "About Us." It shows in great detail how they convert a hardtop diecast car into a convertible.
They did 36 of these Grand National convertibles and I am told they are all sold out. Unlike the other custom one we featured, to create a convertible had to be a lot of work. It does have the GMP logo on the frame so I assume it has been converted from an existing diecast. Unlike the other one this one has the GNX suspension on it and the GNX wheels, yet the decals on the fender are the Grand National decals. The GMP GNX has fender louvers, which had to be removed from this diecast. Although not visible in the photo the dash is the GNX style dash.
PHOTO 1 - Top left photo shows the custom-made box the company did to package the unique Buick GNX/GN convertible. The other photos show various views of the actual Grand National diecast car. The sun visors have been added (the original GMP diecast does not have sun visors.) The silver frame you see around the windshield is actually aluminum. That had to be custom made. The convertible top boot that lies across the back was probably fabricated as well. The quality is excellent. It features a Florida license plate that reads, "1 of 36." The hood opens to reveal the engine.
I have been told the company has sold out of the 36 they made. This one belongs to a customer of ours who bought two of them and wants to sell this one. If you are interested in purchasing this unique 1 of 36 produced GNX/GN convertibles, email me direct - [email protected]. The price is $200 and $12 shipping.
If this car existed in actual size, it would be quite unique as not only being a convertible and having the exterior look like a Grand National, but internally is a GNX!
ONE EXTREMELY RARE 1946 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL -
Back in 1946, the Lincoln was powered by a V12 flathead engine that put out only 130 hp. The car was vastly underpowered when fitted in the convertible Lincoln. Only 201 Lincoln convertibles were built that year. The car weighed over 4,000 lbs.
The original owner of this particular Lincoln is not known, but in the early 1950s, a Captain Smart owned it. At the time, he was stationed at the Willow Grove Naval airbase located in Pennsylvania.
At this point, George Hurst was just starting out making engine mounts in nearby Abington, Pennsylvania. Captain Smart had George Hurst fabricate engine mounts and they installed a 1956 Cadillac V8 engine with 285 hp.
In September of 1956, the Lincoln Continental Owners Club held their Third National event in Boyne Mountain, Michigan. George Hurst was awarded "Best Engine Conversion" in a Lincoln. Since the club had a specific class for engine conversions, I assume this was a popular thing to do on these Lincolns, due to their extreme weight and lack of power.
Fast forward to 2004 and this same Lincoln was sold from the estate of a wealthy businessman from Chicago at the 2004 Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. At this point, its unique history was not known. However, the new owner removed the radiator cover and discovered a copper plaque, which was placed there by George Hurst, and it validated the engine conversion. The plaque reads, "CUSTOM CONVERSION GEORGE HURST ABINGTON, PENNA." (My wife and I grew up in the town next to Abington and I remember where that shop was located). That owner has recently passed away and the 1946 Lincoln Continental convertible is again up for sale.
Here is the link to information on this car -
www.collectibleclassiccar.yolasite.com
George Hurst would team up with Bill Campbell and they later went on to also make shifters and eventually land several OEM accounts, most notably Pontiac.
PHOTO 2 - Recently we have been writing about acquiring all the records you can on your car and obtaining a Window Sticker. I probably have the one most desirable item that connects George Hurst to this particular Lincoln, besides the plate under the hood. It came originally from George Hurst's estate and I purchased it about 2 years ago from Pete Serio.
The photo on the top right shows George Hurst (on the right) in front of the 1946 Lincoln Continental convertible accepting the trophy at the 1956 Lincoln Continental Owners Club in Boyne Mountain, Michigan. The photo on the left shows the actual trophy, which stands about 18" tall. The inscription reads, "BEST ENGINE CONVERSION LINCOLN CONTINENTAL OWNERS CLUB THIRD ANNUAL MEET BOYNE FALLS MICHIGAN SEPTEMBER 1956." On the metal plate attached to the base is a line engraving of a 1946 Lincoln Continental convertible.
The car is currently for sale with a price of $175,000 and has been appraised for $218,000. So, it appears I have a pretty valuable item associated with one extremely rare 1946 Lincoln Continental convertible!
I have an April 1, 1947 Red Book (shown in the photo in the lower right), which shows used car prices. When it was new, the 1946 Lincoln Continental convertible listed for $4,474. This was quite a handsome sum in 1946. A typical Ford in 1946 sold for under $2,000.
So, if you do any spring housecleaning, and have some trophies that you have won gathering dust, you may want to dust them off and keep them for the next owner of your car!
I talked to Bill Campbell this past Sunday. He had just started to work with George Hurst in 1956, and actually did some work on several of the Lincoln conversions back in 1956-1957. He says only a handful of these Lincolns were ever done and one of the best conversions they did was to put a brand new 1956 Buick V8 engine and drivetrain in a Lincoln Continental convertible. George Hurst did not own the Lincoln that won for best engine conversion, but as the photo shows he was there to accept the trophy in Michigan back in September of 1956 from the Lincoln Continental Owners Club for doing the conversion work.
BUICK DEALER OUTDOOR PROGRAM -
We have all seen them along major highways - billboards featuring various products, including new cars. In my collection I actually have a 1987 Buick promotional flyer that dealers would have ordered outdoor billboard posters for.
Interesting enough, Buick only offered billboard posters for 8 models. The Regal was NOT one of them. So, in 1987 Buick's hottest car was not even offered on a billboard from Buick, according to this brochure! I guess they did not need to advertise any of the Regal/Turbo models.
PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows the actual 11" x 8-1/2" brochure with the Hawk logo on the front. The top right photo shows the Buick Riviera T-Type. The dealer info would be printed of the poster where it reads, "HOMETOWN BUICK." The lower left photo shows two lesser exciting Buick models, the Buick Somerset and the Buick Century Limited. The lower right photo is the Order Form listing what was available. No prices are listed, so I have no idea what Buick charged dealers for billboard posters back then.
SPECIAL DOOR PRIZE AT OUR OPEN HOUSE -
At our upcoming Spring Open House, one of the special door prizes will be this custom-made men's Grand National watch. It has a quality quartz movement, chrome body and black rotating bezel, with a stainless back cover, custom dial measures 1-1/4", durable flexible stainless band, water resistant, and has a long life "silver oxide" battery.
It is one of the best looking watches I have seen featuring the Buick and Grand National logos on the face of the dial. This is just one of the unique door prizes we will have at our Open House.
PHOTO 4 - Shows the Buick Grand National men's watch that will be one of several door prizes that will be given away at our April 14th Open House. This is, by far, one of the nicest watches we have seen for any Grand National owner.

SPEAKING OF DIECAST CARS -
Fairfield Collectibles has just released a 1:18 scale Buick Grand National. The doors, hood, and trunk open. It looks stock except the car is lowered and rides on huge aftermarket rims. The price is $59.99, stock number 10219CM. Their website is - www.fairfieldcollectibles.com - Phone - 800-964-8908.
ON THE NEWS FRONT - HOT ROD MAY 2012 -
HOT ROD magazine, May 2012 issue has a four-page article featuring a 1963 Nova SS convertible that is powered by a 1986-1987 turbo Buick engine. The car is a Nova SS model convertible, which is extremely rare. Chad Hartmann is the owner and hails from Omaha, Nebraska. So far his best time is 11.38 at 114 mph. He says the turbo engine is docile enough for daily use! I am sure with summer coming, Chad will be out cruising in it!

Keep in mind, the deadline is fast approaching to save money on the new reproduction 1978-1987 Regal upper dash panel. You can give a deposit now to get the introductory price. You can also arrange to pick it up at our Open House and save shipping charges.
Below is all the information on this new reproduction upper dash trim panel. We have an actual production part in house, and it is dead-on identical to the factory upper dash panel. The big advantage is these new panels are molded in grey, rather than blue like GM did.
NEW REPRODUCTION UPPER DASH TRIM PANEL -
SALE ENDS THIS FRIDAY - MARCH 30th
As many of you know, the upper dash trim panel was discontinued a while ago from GM. Some have appeared on eBay fetching $250 or more. Finding one not cracked or warped is like finding a good used powermaster brake bowl. Slim at best!
Well, we have some good news. One is currently being made that is injection molded, just like the original. This first run is being produced in grey color rather than how GM did it in an off-color blue. We have seen an actual finished part and it is dead-on accurate to the original. So much so, you would not see any difference between two new ones if you saw them in a photo or even in person.
Because we know this will be a popular item, we are offering you a special introductory price so we know in advance how many to have order. The suggested retail price will be $199.95. If you call our office now and place your order, the price will be just $179.95. To lock in at that introductory price, we require a $25 deposit.
This introductory price is only good until Friday, March 30th, noon eastern time. We fully expect to be able to fill our orders by the first week of April. We will be one of the very first sources to have them available.
This panel is correct and fits all 1978 through 1987 Regals, not just Turbo models
Here is the complete information on this panel.
1978-1987 Buick Regal (All A-Body & G-Body Models) -
REPRODUCTION UPPER DASH TRIM PANEL
Today, an original upper dash trim panel is usually cracked on most original Regals. It sits between the upper dash pad and the windshield.
This reproduction upper dash trim panel will fit any 1978-1987 Buick Regal and is made by the same process that GM used originally, injection molded. The quality is excellent. We have seen a production sample and it is dead-on match to the original GM panel. The grey is impregnated into the plastic, which will closely match the original Grand National grey trim colors.
The panel comes in grey and can be painted to match the interior of your car.
For other colors, we offer some interior color spray paints (see Miscellaneous Section.)

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected].

ALWAYS IN A BUYING POSITION WORKS -
Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected].

April 27-29, 2012
It's time to register for the 2nd Annual Ride on Molly ride in California!
The event purpose is two-fold – It serves as a gathering of friends to honor Molly and to provide a remembrance of the positive impact he had on so many lives. It also benefits Molly and Terry's daughter Brooke, by adding to her college fund.
Donations to participate in the ride are neither required nor expected. However, 100% of all donations received will be placed in Brooke's college fund as they were last year. Since donations go to a personal fund, they are not tax deductible.
