Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 12-07-2022 - DECEMBER 7TH 1941 - Today marks the anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history,,,,the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This event holds a special meaning to my wife's side of the family. Her Mom was born and raised in Hawaii. Her future husband, Nick was stationed at Schofield Barracks that fateful day. He actually witnessed the Japanese low flying planes as they flew over his base on their way to Pearl Harbor that Sunday morning. Two of my mother-in-law’s playmates who lived across the street from where she lived were killed as they were getting ready for Church that Sunday morning by machine gun fire from the Japanese planes. My in-laws have passed down to me a piece of one of the Japanese planes that my father-in-law kept for all those years from that fateful day. Something that I will pass down to our son. My mother-in-law who is 94 still remembers that fateful day. It’s hard to imagine witnessing such a terrible event in one's lifetime. FUNNY GRAND NATIONAL STORY - Last February I was looking through Craigslist and spotted a foreign car for sale that had a mileage of 260,000 miles. From the pictures the car looked really nice. Plus the car was a 5-speed manual shift. I was intrigued as I always like seeking out high mileage cars that have had extremely great care. Car was at a body shop nearby. I think at best it was like 25 degrees the day I went to look at the car. I did not tell the seller when I was coming as I wanted to start the car up when it was dead cold to see how it sounded before it warmed up. Turns out the shop is run by 2 brothers, one of which owns a GN that I have known for 25 plus years or longer. I go look at the car and it is in surprisingly great condition. Damage was to the front bumper and core support which happens to be a bolt in plastic core support. Radiator was already replaced and I knew this would not be much of a challenge for my son to repair as long as I was patient enough to wait for an appointment. Spare never used, window sticker in the glove box, good clutch, no engine noises when cold and dry underneath. Interior was as close to perfect as could be even the driver's seat. I bought the car. I basically restored it with a new steering wheel, tires and redone stock alloy wheels. Car is quite solid with no rust. So last week I had some errands to do and figured I would stop and show them the car now that it is all done. The one brother has owned a 1987 GN for over 25 plus years and drives it to work every day. His wife every day tells him she hates it. For 25 years he has been trying to stop the oil leaks. Never has been able to stop them completely! He repainted the car and did it right, removing the mirrors and quarter glass prior to painting. So we outside as and in a humorous way I start picking apart his car. I first noticed the trunk lock hole had been filled in it. A common thing that was done a lot in the 1960s. I even had a 1956 Crown Victoria Ford that had the lock filled in and had a rope under the ear seat to one the trunk. We open the trunk and he has repainted the inside of the trunk lid and the first thing I notice is the SPID label is gone. He said he saved it years ago but lost it! I said that is gonna be a big issue for your wife when she sells your car some day! He then said you don’t notice anything else unusual about the outside. He did have the seats redone with the reproduction material which looks good but not exact to the original Pallex material. I said yes the wheels were powder coated glossy black. Turns out I was only half right! He had the two wheels on the drivers side done in glossy black powder coating at $85 each and on the passenger side left them factory chrome GN wheels! His reasoning is because he liked the Fast & Furious look and at the same time liked the stock chrome look! I then said I doubt this idea will gain much steam among Grand National owners! I said I have never seen that done before! We had a good laugh. He then showed me in the one drawer of his massive tool box a battered original 1987 Regal owners manual that I had signed for him years ago and one of my 350 page books. I reminded him that the value won’t increase much until I die. He also noted that I had forgotten on page 89-91 of that book the white T-Type in the book was his car that I used for the original emblem placement photos. He also remembers picking up parts at our Sugar Bottom Road address one time when a tractor trailer was there and he got stuck helping me unload the GN wheels I would buy. He said he did get a nice dinner prepared by Eileen that night though. It was good reminiscing with him. So if you live in my area and see a GN with black powder coated wheels chances are the other side will be original chrome ones! Don’t follow him too close as it does leak oil! PHOTO 1 - We show one wheel from the drivers side and one stock wheel from the passenger side. I doubt this format will become fashionable on Grand Nationals! Also a photo showing the lack of the trunk lock. I guess because of the rear spoiler it is not that noticeable. The last photo shows his passenger redone bucket seat. For being driven every day the car is in very good condition. Least he gets to enjoy it every day and at the same time irritates his wife! A win-win situation. CHRISTMAS M&M CONTEST COMING NEXT WEEK - Watch for details. Also a reminder the week between Christmas and New Years is the one week during the year that we do not do a weekly Inner Circle. LOCAL TOY STORE - Last week we mentioned selling our Turbo Regal diecast cars to this local toy store. I think he bought over 25 from me over this past summer. Several members wanted to know where it was. This store specializes in toy collectables. My son just got from there an original Spiderman display that was at one time a display in a BlockBuster store. I just bought from him the other week a 1:18 scale 1967 GTO, one of just 400 made that I had never ever seen before! They have a huge array of diecast cars, slot cars, model kits, old steel toys, hot wheels, almost everything is still in the original boxes! They also buy collections! The owners are Neal and Sue. Their store is located in the huge Q-Mart in Quakertown, Also called Quakertown Mart. A well known place that features over 75 stores under one roof! They are only open Friday thru Sunday. Two other stores I like in this mart are the huge video store with new and used DVDs, and also a magazine store. Two stores that are not common to find anymore. Neal and Gale are there personally only on saturday. They also have my banners for sale. Check it out. Using my name probably gets charged double! If you go through number 20 entrance once thru the doors go to the right in the first aisle. Their store is about 2 stores down on the right. For more info email Neal at [email protected] EARLY CAR CELL PHONES - Car cell phones, at least on GM cars, were in its infancy in the mid 1980s. In doing some recent research of a lot of my original Buick information I came across a 7 page original Buick letter address to all Buick Dealers. It lists every model for the new 1986 Buick models. Basically lists new ordering information and additions that did not make it in the new 1986 Car Order Guides. It has a section for all the Buick models for the 1986 year reason it is 7 pages long. Under the Regal T-Type and Grand Nationals two changes. One is the code YF4 for California emissions. California always seems to have different emission standards! The other newly added code is UV9 and this is for the cellular telephone wiring harness. They also recommend UA1, the heavy duty battery if you get the UV9 cellular phone harness. That YF4 code would also carry over in the 1987 models specifically for the very few original California sold GNXs. So in other words since all the options were the same for the GNX the exception would be the very few (How many I do not know) were originally sold in California. Again I never saw UV9 code on a 1986 or 1987 Regal. The cell phone was like I said, very new. In the early days it was the top of the line models that had a shot of having that feature such as the Park Avenue. Corvettes would be another prime candidate. You learn something new every day. PHOTO 2 - We show page 5 of this 7-page letter and half way down the page is the reference specifically for the Regal Grand National listing the new YF5 code and the UV9 code. I would be curious if any readers have that UV9 code on the SPID label. The second photo shows a very early typical car phone from my personal collection. I got it several years ago out of a car in a junkyard. I can’t remember what car or model. SPEAKING OF ADDITIONAL HARNESSES- With cars today being packed with more and more features/options etc I would be curious to know how many miles of wire are in a typical high end car such as a BMW or MB. It has to be some outrageous number compared to cars of years ago. The latest idea is car companies want to charge a monthly fee for certain options! One of the cars I have now has satellite radio. It is still on the previous owner's subscription bill as I have not had to pay for it yet! Small perk! ORIGINAL PAIR (2) 1986-1987 GRAND NATIONAL WHEELS - See the Rare Parts section for price for the set. See story above about the Grand National that has mixed wheels on it. While I was at their body shop I noticed a few things. One was a 1956 T bird, just the body shell down to bare metal still on the rack untouched since I saw it last February! One of those projects that progress happens very slowly at best! I can’t remember what he said about how many years it's been sitting prior to last year! But I think 5 years is not out of the question. I spotted two Grand National wheels that had 10 years of body shop dust on them. I said to dust them off and I will come back tomorrow with a check. He agreed so I bought them. . The wheels being stored inside a heated building for at least 10 years are in very good condition as well as the backs and the bead area. The chrome is still very bright showing no fading at all. The black needs to be redone. PHOTO 3 - We show 4 views of the 4 wheels. My observation is these are high driver quality. Chrome is still very bright. The black needs to be redone. They seem straight with no wheel weight marks on the outside of the rims. See Rare Parts section for price. PHOTO 4 - The top left photos shows NOS GM 1986-1987 factor oil cap. Also 6 NOS GM pull strap caps. The top right photo shows a good used 1986-1987 Turbo shield and inlet pipe. The bottom left photo shows a factory 1986-1987 air box assembly powder coated glossy black with new reproduction AC decal attached. The bottom right photo shows a new powder coated power steering reservoir bracket, a powder coated safety hood latch, a NOS GM wastegate foam filter, a 100% correct used Made in England radiator cap, and a NOS GM factory overflow bottle cap. (Reproduction of this cap is not exact! Neither is the reproduction Made in England radiator cap. See Rare Parts section for prices. 2005 SAAB 9-3 SEDAN FOR SALE - Dealer I work with just got in a 2005 Saab 9-3 sedan. Remarkable condition inside and out. A one owner had to be garaged. Miles a remarkable 270,000. Runs out 100% no lights on. Latest PA inspection. Wheels are all in nice condition as is the interior. Gray exterior and gray leather interior. $3495. Buys it. Body is super super nice. ANOTHER .UNUSUAL CAR FOR SALE LOCAL TO ME - Small time dealer who I have known personally for 25 plus years. He recently acquired a 1990 Olds Touring Sedan. Olds only made these I believe 3 years 1988-1989-1990 in I think 4 different color combos. Over the years I have bought and sold 2 of them. These were top of the line models probably with every available option. A project Oldsmobile did with ASC if I recall. This fine example has just under 80,000 actual miles and the asking price is $7995. Email me for photos and more details. Dealer did just spent a grand on repairing the brake system. I think the brake system is similar to the powermaster format used in the Turbo Regals. Car is gray with a matching gray leather interior. Extremely nice inside and out. Car shows it has had exceptional care over the years. CHRISTMAS SPECIALS REMINDER - Here is a rundown on our annual Christmas specials. ORIGINAL GM DEALER PROMOS STILL IN THE ORIGINAL BOXES - I have a local source that tells me he has probably 900 or more original GM dealer promo cars in the original boxes from the 1960s and later. I assume they are all GM. He wants to sell the entire lot. I have no idea as to their value as I am sure among them would be some basic “losers” as not every GM promo was a winner. Vegas, Citations, Beretta are three GMs that quickly come to mind under the category of losers. Any experts in this area of collectors? I see value in the Corvette-Chevelle-GTO- otherwise I have no idea. Email me [email protected] if you have some ideas. I have sold all but about 6 of the hand crafted Street Rods we showed several weeks ago to local people. They were a real hit being hand done. 1965 MERCURY MARAUDER FOR SALE - Local to my location is this unusual 1965 Mercury Marauder for sale. The 390 engine has been rebuilt. It runs and drives, but will require more work to be road worthy. Has solid floors and a solid frame according to the note on the car. Very straight looking hardtop priced at $5500. Email me [email protected] as I can provide more information and the phone number. PHOTO 1 - We show four photos of this 1965 Mercury Marauder for sale. Very straight looking car that are not very common to find. Needs work to be road worthy. ONE VERY UNUSUAL ORIGINAL BUICK BROCHURE FROM 1987 - This original brochure is printed on glossy stock and in full color. This brochure has all the ordering specifications that dealers could order 8 different outdoor billboard posters for their dealership. What I find interesting about this, is it lists all the models for 1987 except the one that was by far the most popular model which wo/uld be the Regals in the various models such as a Turbo-T or a Grand National. I understand not needing one for GNX since production was limited to 547. But totally neglected was the entire Regal model line up. PHOTO 2 - We show the cover of the outdoor program brochure and 3 of the 1987 Buick models that you could have ordered and had the name of your dealership printed across the bottom. These would be billboard size. BUICK SERVICE BULLETINS CONCERNING THE POWERMASTER BRAKE UNITS - As I have stated many times in the past, I have a wealth of original Buick material that I bought up in the late 1980s and early 1990s mainly to have research material for the 350 page book I wrote. Most of which we have put in the handy size booklet formats that several companies are carrying as well as Kirban Performance. It is a series of about 12 different booklets with part numbers of #7989 thru #7992 and #8025 thru #8034. All in that handy size format 5 ½ by 8 ½. I have the original Dealer Service Bulletin one is dated May 87 and the other is dated June 87. The May 87 talks about repair kits have been released to assist in servicing the powermaster brake system. It lists the 3 components, the pump and motor, pressure switch, and of course the one most readers are very familiar with the accumulator bowl. This bulletin is dated May 87 which tells you early on Buick realized they got some real issues with the powermaster brake system! I don’t think they would put out a Service Bulletin if it was just a handful of problems. I clearly remember back in the day when I was buying these cars and getting records with many of them seeing repair orders for the powermaster brake system. In some cases more than one. Right off the bat was the issue with the original brake switch which was a recall and cost the owner nothing. In June of 87 the next Dealer Service Bulletin again addressed the powermaster issues and listed not only repair kits but also complete warranty exchange units. For complete warranty exchange units they show 3 different part numbers to cover the 1987 Turbo Regal, 1986-1987 Turbo Regal and the 1986 Electra and LeSabre Estate wagons. Again obvious that Buick saw a flood of issues early on to have an exchange program on entire units. I guess Pontiac was paying attention to these issues and chose to avoid it when they came out with the Turbo Trans Am in 1989! One reason why Buick may have had different part numbers was probably because part of the station wagons probably had that slanted plastic master cylinder reservoir whereas the Turbo Regal did not have a slanted reservoir. Again this is my educated guess. Again not being an expert and having zero mechanical ability it was several things that contributed to the failure of the powermaster brake unit. I don’t believe anywhere did Buick give any advice as to how often the brake fluid should be changed to avoid dirt getting in the delicate system. The brake accumulator balls I have no idea how long their life span is but they do lose pressure over time. If you're lucky it happens gradually with the brake light flickering on warning you that brake issues are about to get worse. Again I am not an expert. Basically the brake bowl has 3 versions. The original was the smallest of all 3 and was solid black. The nut to remove it was inward where it attaches. The second version of the brake bowl as it is commonly called had yellow wording silk screened around the outer part and the nut was at the back edge of the bowl. The 3rd and current version the bowl is slightly larger in diameter and the nut is inward where it attaches. I had a small part in that fitment of the latest brake bowl years ago. Going by memory I worked with a company as originally when I got one of the first new brake bowls the nut was too short to get between the bowl and the main unit to tighten it. I had to have the open end wrench machined down to slip it between the bowl and the main unit. (I still have that wrench!) Again going by memory of over 12-15 years ago. PHOTO 3 - We show the May 87 Dealer Service Bulletin and the second photo shows the June 87 Dealer Service Bulletin. Before you run those part numbers keep in mind if you are lucky enough to find a powermaster exchange unit new in the box it will be 30 plus years old and in 99% of the time the motor will be locked up solid! In other words a small lawn ornament. MORE ORIGINAL PRODUCT INFORMATION FROM MY COLLECTION - The one product information sheet is dated 3-20-87 and announces that Buick has discontinued the color exterior combination of brown and light brown accent paint option treatment code (62). This was for the remainder of the 1987 model year. The reason stated was deleting this paint combination will reduce overall build complexity and help improve Regal paint quality! Looking at the date 3-20-87 it's a shame Buick waited so long in the model year to try and improve the Regal paint quality. It appears that Buick only had paint issues with the Regal models. The other product information sheet is dated a day earlier 3-19-87. It refers to the Buick Electra and Park Avenue models which I believe were the top two Buick models in 1987. It refers to the code UV8 which was the special pre-wire harness for various new cellular phones that was in its infancy back in 1987. It lists 8 different cellular manufacturers at the time. Of the list of 8 I only recognize one AT&T that is still around today. PHOTO 4 - The left photo shows the Product Information 3-20-87 where they announced they would discontinue the brown and light brown exterior Regal paint combination, The photo to the right refers to the special cellular phone harness UV8 that was an option in the Electra and Park Avenue models and the 8 manufacturers the harness would be compatible with. NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE - We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle. When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another. Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works. You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version. NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo. If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
