THE CORONAVIRUS –

Across our country and world, we are in the midst of a medical crisis. By far this has been the most devastating health issue that has struck the entire world population in the last 100 years.

The only thing I can recall that we have endured in the U.S., was the gas crisis in the late 1970s. For those of you too young to remember, during the gas crisis because of a shortage, you could only get gas on even or odd days depending on your license plate number.

I was fortunate back then as we owned a towing business, so I was able to get fuel anytime I needed it. People where buying locking gas caps as theft of fuel was rampant in parts of the country.

The big questions reporters seem to ask at every White House briefing is, “When can Americans expect a remedy or a vaccine, and how long do they think it will last before things return to normal?” Real answers can only be guesses on the part of the experts.

I don’t mean to sound preachy, but it’s times like these that prayer should be something we all need to do. A practice that needs to continue after this menace to the world is eliminated.

Meanwhile countries like North Korea keeps its population in the dark and continues to shoot up missiles on a weekly basis.

Prior to this virus, I would visit my mother-in-law every Tuesday. Now visits are not allowed. Now, I have write her letters. I haven’t written letter in over 50 years when I would write my future wife daily from Vietnam.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FACTORY ASTRO ROOF CF5 ROLLER - FOR SALE -

This is an ad for a 1987 Grand National. If you are interest, contact Ben directly.

This is a well-optioned 1987 Grand National minus the drivetrain is being offered for sale. I am selling the car as a roller with no motor/transmission. The car will come with wiring harness installed. Overall the interior is in very good condition. New seat covers from PUI have been installed, as well as a new headliner and new sun visors.

Odometer shows 68,XXX miles. Nearly rust free car. The doors, frame, etc. are all solid. Car has a few door dings, and a slight rust spot on the trunk lid. Unfortunately, someone has removed the door locks, but did a nice job. Factory GN wheels included with the car. The wheels are in fair condition. With very minimal work, the car would be very presentable. The reason for selling the Grand National is I have found a T-Type roller and I plan to put my built drivetrain into this car instead.

Asking $8,995. Located in Port Trevorton, PA, which is about 40 miles north of Carlisle Fairgrounds. Will deliver within 100 miles.

Call Ben at 570-847-4438. 1 of 2 weeks

1965 GTO HURST CONTEST CAR - MECUM AUCTION MAY 12-17th 2020 - INDY –

The one and only 1965 GTO/Hurst “Contest Car” is scheduled to go up for auction at the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis. The dates are May 12th and 17th. This car is listed as the main attraction for the auction. Depending on the progress of fighting the coronavirus, this event could be pushed back to a later date.

I am very familiar with this unique GTO. It was a great move for Hurst to team up with Pontiac. The Hurst shifter was part of the GTO package (manual shifters) and Pontiac allowed Hurst to put their name on the chrome handle on the 1965 models. Prior to the 1965 GTO models, Hurst was not permitted to have their name visible on the chrome handle in the 1964 GTO.

NOTE - The Hurst Dual Gate for the automatic was not available until the 1967 GTO. Pontiac pulled out all the stops as this car probably had every option possible for 1965. The list of options totals 28! Hurst provided the gold anodized shifter handle and a custom set of matching gold anodized Hurst wheels.

The exterior was done in a special gold color that was known or became known later as “Tiger Gold.” Gold and black were George Hurst’s favorite colors. Interesting enough, in the late 1960s my Dad had his white Cadillac repainted that same Tiger Gold color. From what I read, this color was also called Coronado Gold and was mostly used by Pontiac. It was only used between 1965 and 1968. It was one of 5 or 6 colors that had no paint code.

The car was won by someone in the midwest originally. I remember years ago one of my GTO customers had a chance to buy this rare one-of-one GTO for under $2,500. He turned it down thinking it was too much money to pay. This was back when you could buy early GTOs for $1,200 or so. I know as I bought and sold several in the early 1970s. At first, I would only buy 1964 through 1967 GTO models thinking the later ones would not increase in value. Later my thinking improved and I did buy several Judge models. My other favorite muscle car of choice during the 1970s were Mopars, especially the GTX models. So yes, like many of you old-timers, I do have a lot of regrets of what I bought and sold for peanuts.

Years later, in the 1980s I was invited to attend the car show St. Ignace, Michigan and got to see the GTO Contest Car in person. At that time, I believe it had been partially restored. By the 1980s the values of GTOs had started to climb. Since then I had not seen or heard anything about this one-of-a-kind GTO.

It’s difficult to estimate what this unique GTO will bring in May at the Mecum auction. The world as we know it has been in tremendous turmoil. Under a robust economy, I think it would hit 6 figures providing this car shows a top notch restoration and has full documentation. If that fails to happen, this unique car and many others could suffer major setbacks due to the upheaval of incomes.

PHOTO 2 – The photo on the left shows the page from Mecums website showing the 1965 Pontiac Hurst GeeTo Tiger Car. The photo in the middle shows a rare copy of the Hurst News Notes dated April 1965 explaining the actual contest. It also talks about sending a free poster to all its distributors to hang in their store windows. That actual poster from 1965 can be seen in the photo on the right. This poster measures 16 inches by 21 inches. It is in mint condition and hangs on my home office wall. I doubt very few of these original posters still exist today.

MEMORIES ALONG THE OPEN ROAD –

As many of you know, I have bought and sold over 325 Turbo Regals, including 11 real GNXs. One could say I did this at the perfect time. I did it mostly when Turbo Regals had values of a basic used car. Also back then, the cars looked at lot better due to the fact they were not that old. To duplicate those sale numbers today would be extremely risky due to the age of the cars and the number of owners the cars have had since they were new.

Remember, I was taking a check from the dealership that was already made out on an agreed price. This was based on info the seller gave me ahead of time with pictures. I went thru 3 trucks and 2 trailers.

When I started to buy them I had no idea I would reach those lofty sales numbers. This doesn’t include the various BMWs and Mustangs I also would buy. Since I was operating under a license thru O”Neil Buick, I was not limited to a specific car.

I had one basic rule about how far in distance I would travel, due to time on the road. I would not go any further west than the Mississippi River. I stuck to that rule 95% of the time.

The two trailers were open-style trailers and light weight making them easy to manage. Each trailer cost me under two grand. The first truck I used was a 1997 Dodge Dakota extended cab with the V8. That lasted until I rear-ended a car near the Indiana-Ohio border 3 days prior to Thanksgiving. The next truck was a Chevy 2500HD with the 8.1 gas motor. I retired that truck due to rust issues and got the identical truck in the GMC model. It was even the same color. I got the dealership to switch over my tires and wheels as part of the trade.

I loved those 8.1 gas engines with the Allison transmission and the great acceleration. One side point is, almost without fail on every trip many passing cars and truck drivers gave me the thumbs up when the saw the cars I was trailering. Even at fuel stops people would want to know if it was for sale or what model was it. It makes sense as most of the cars I was buying were prime mint examples.

With more spare time at home, I recently went through the many photos I have and will pick out a few and post them in future Inner Circles. A memory refresher course and one that I lived through.

It’s a shame I never kept track of the many miles I covered picking up these Turbo Regals. It’s like the weekly Inner Circle - I’ve been doing it a long time.

PHOTO 3 – In the top left photo you can clearly see my white Dodge Dakota, so this would be around 1990 time frame. The top right photo shows a grey Turbo-T in front of a cool looking building. I remember that photo as it was the trip that I wrecked the Dakota a few hours later. This would have been in eastern Indiana or western Ohio.

The bottom left photo shows a beautiful WE4 on the trailer in front of a closed down outside movie theater. I owned a good number of WE4 models as they were the best sellers in a T format. The bottom right photo shows a Grand National on my trailer. On trips where I would stay overnight I never ever had any issue of the cars being stolen or vandalized. Today with values a lot higher, having one on an open trailer in a motel parking lot may be a bit risky.

MORE MEMORIES -

My 2007 REUNION BIRTHDAY BASH was our last multi-day event. It was held over 2 days between our shop and our home. Paul Castle trailered his Silver Billet Turbo-T race car from Chicago.

Paul took Molly for a personal 5-second ride on our country road. The church you see in the background is over 250 years old. Nobody there complained about the noise.

PHOTO 4 – The top photo shows Molly autographing items at one of our events. The lower photos show two pictures of Molly’s ride in Paul Castle’s Turbo-T Race Car. As you can see very little safety precautions were taken in advance of the blast down our road.

NOW THAT YOU HAVE FREE TIME AT HOME –

While you can get varied opinions on how to get more power out of your Turbo Regal, most opinions agree when it comes to bracing up your car. I find it unusual that Chevrolet for the Monte Carlos had a pair of front frame braces that tie the frame to a point under the front.

Maybe it was a cost factor for Buick. Who knows? For many years, we would buy the GM Monte Carlo front fame braces until we exhausted GM’s inventory. Then we had them reproduced. Our part number is #6564, and the price is $64.95. There are no holes to drill and they are simple to install.

To further improve the bracing up front Darrell designed a front connecting brace. It ties into the front frame braces, part #6756, and price is $81.95. (The connecting brace does not fit if you have an extended intercooler.) Both of braces make a huge difference in tightening up the front end.

We also have the 4-piece rear seat brace kit, part #1586, and sell for $82.95. Again, interesting enough, GM had a similar seat brace in the Pontiac Grand Prix. That Grand Prix rear brace became part of the GNX upgrades for the GNX project. Like the front frame braces, the Buick Regals never got the trunk brace. We sell the identical GNX style rear seat brace, part #7169, that duplicates the GNX rear seat brace. This GNX-style rear seat brace kit requires you to weld it in the car. We have sold probably over 1,000 of this the 4-piece set, part #1586. I can’t take credit for the design. It was designed and marketed first by John Pearcy out of Washington state, who turned it over to us about 10-12 years ago. This 4-piece format makes a huge difference, especially noticeable on any T-Tops option Regal.

The 4-piece rear seat brace kit does require a few hours to install. It helps if you are a small person as you need to remove the back seat and be able to get in and out of the trunk to drill the necessary holes. It’s best to have the back wheels off the ground as well.

Lastly, my son designed a set of braces for under the hood, part #6744 for $36.95. You can find similar under-the-hood braces mostly on the later front wheel drive cars, such as the Regal and Monte Carlo.

Right now we have all 4 different braces in stock.

While you have some down time at home, here is a worthwhile project to not only stiffen your car, but will also give your spouse some peace and quiet.

STORIES THAT CAUGHT MY INTEREST THIS PAST WEEK –

Here are some stories from this past week that caught my interest.

Someone in North Carolina stole a tractor trailer that was carrying 18,000 lbs of toilet paper. It is just amazing what some people will do during a crisis. It’s good to hear some uplifting stories during this time of crisis where people have been over generous with tipping and others have contributed to various food banks and still others have gone food shopping for the elderly.

CARS FOR SALE -

1987 GRAND NATIONAL - FOR SALE –

This refurbished 1987 Grand National is local to us. The seller has purchased many of the parts from us to refurbish this 1987 Grand National. Options include - T-Tops, power seat, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, power windows, posi rear, power antenna (works), and power locks. It has a later GM factory am/fm CD player. The actual miles are 69,000.

The trunk ID label is untouched, spare and jack appear to have never been used. The car spent most of its life in Texas with the previous owner. The car has only been driven about 500 miles since 1993, according to the Texas inspection and paperwork. The tires look brand new, but are over 20 years old and need to be replaced! Car is 99.9% stock. The only two non-original items I spotted under the hood are injectors and the plug wires. The air box, and intercooler hoses are factory stock.

The seller gave the car a professional fresh repaint, even going as far as redoing all the trim in the correct satin black, including the grille, headlight bezels, and all the moldings. All the weather strips are new as is the hood insulation pad. The gas tank has been dropped and cleaned. Also, a fresh tune up and gas filter. Car has all the original wheels and center caps.

The interior is all original and in very good condition showing virtually no wear at all. You do have the typical sun fade due to the car having T-Tops and spending most of its life in Texas.

The doors shut like new. I drove this Grand National and it is extremely tight and rattle free. The transmission shifts nice and crisp. The age of the tires becomes evident at highway speeds. You can clearly tell this Grand National has never been run hard and having less than 70,000 miles on a 35-year-old car is low miles. The seller has gone to great extent to make the exterior like new and original in all aspects. The interior is virtually like new. Under the hood needs to be detailed as does the frame and suspension. The seller has paperwork going back to when the car was in Texas. The car was actually bought used from O’Neil Buick/GMC, which is the same dealership that handled all my 325-plus transactions! In Photo 1 we show 4 photos of this 1987 Grand National.

This stock appearing Grand National has an asking price of $21,900. For more photos, email me direct – [email protected]

1993 CAMARO PACE CAR – IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR SALE –

I recently discovered a real nice original 1993 Camaro Pace Car for sale local to me. Car has 22,000 miles on it. The price tag seems reasonable at $14,900. I was able to reach the person in charge of the repair shop that is selling the car for their customer. They do have the Window Sticker. It is quite nice. The interior is close to mint. You can tell the car has had great care since new. I did hear it run. Interior is mint as is the body. A few hours spent detailing this car would make it show worthy. The Pace car seems fairly priced to me. If this car perks your interest, email me [email protected]

1985 REGAL LIMITED CHEVY V8 POWERED - STILL AVAILABLE - FOR SALE –

One of our relatives local to us is having us sell their custom-built 1985 Regal Limited that has been in the family since new. This 1985 Regal Limited has always been garaged, never hit, or smoked in. Our son Darrell repainted this car the factory color back in 2003 for $2,000. At 128,000 miles, the engine was converted with a brand GM 350/330 HP crate motor at a cost of $5,200. This was backed up with a rebuilt turbo 400 transmission. A local shop that we deal with redid the rear putting in a new eaton posi with, I believe, to be 3.08 gears. Gear ratio is perfect for high speed cruising.

Being a Limited, it is very well optioned and even the power antenna works. It has Bilstein shocks. Tires are fairly new. The tire size is 205/75 by 14s. Riding on the original 14 by 6 steel wheels with full Regal wheel covers.

With just a few Turbo Regal upgrades this would be an extremely nice solid handling Regal. I you install set of 16 by 8s on all four corners, a Turbo-T steering box, a rear sway bar, and a leather wheel, it will not only ride better, but look better too. The doors shut like they are brand new. The driver’s power pillow seat is the only interior part that shows very minor wear along the edge and around the power switch. A set of tasteful 3 gauges hang of the bottom edge of the dash under the radio. The power seat motor runs but does not function. Headliner will need to be replaced. The steering column has movement in the one section of the tilt.

The current mileage is 135,000, so that is less than 10,000 miles on a brand new GM crate motor. Electric fan with a V8 radiator handles the cooling. The AC has been completely rebuilt. Car has long-branch headers that dump into a new GNX exhaust system. Bigger front sway bar was installed. MSD ignition and an Edelbrock 4-barrell carburetor are fed with a cold air system. The adult owner has never once driven it hard to chirp the tires. Car still has its original half-padded roof. Body and paint are real nice with zero rust. All the stainless and emblems are in good condition. Nothing is missing. Bumpers also are close to new. All the critical labels are still intact, including the SPID label on the inside trunk lid. This car is a bargain and has had excellent care since new.

NEW LOWER PRICE $5,995 - OBO

The owner needs to sell the car. The body is exceptional with near perfect chrome, and all the stainless is nice. The car is at our house. For more photos, email me direct - [email protected]

Here is the link to see the Auto Easel pictures and information on our website.

We also now have a YouTube video showing it installed on a 2012 Camaro SS and on a 1985 Regal. In this 9-minute YouTube video we also show all the parts in the kit as well as the unit complete. It clearly shows how it installed in mere seconds, if you use a power hand tool with the proper bit to secure the single allen head screw on the 2-piece clamp.

We have filmed an informative video for YouTube filmed by our son Darrell showing how to attach the unit to your vehicle. Here is a link to the video on YouTube.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Reproduction GRAND NATIONAL FENDER & TRUNK EMBLEMS

We are now offering high-quality reproduction Grand National emblems for the front fenders and trunk lid. All 1986-1987 GNs used three emblems; one on each fender and one on the driver’s side trunk lid. The 1984-1985 GNs only used two emblems; one on each fender.

This striking silver, red, orange and black enamel-like finish emblem measures 5-3/8" x 1-7/8" and comes with a self-adhesive backing.

NOTE - If you need to replace an emblem on your car, it’s best to replace all three at the same time so they all look new.

Emblems also make a great addition to any car show display board.

Another excellent replacement for any exterior restoration.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING –

Let’s hope this health crisis ends soon.

It’s already knocked out all the various sport events, and how much more can you watch on TV. The upcoming car show season is something to look forward to across the country.
