Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 03-22-2017 -
TURBO REGAL FLOOR MOUNTED SHIFTER -
Many of you have the bucket seat format with the floor mounted shifter in the console in your Turbo Regal. In my opinion, and I am sure others share my same opinion, the shifter is easily broken and was not very well built. What you may not realize is that exact style shifter handle dates back to at least 1978, and was used in a variety of G-body cars.
Years ago I had a 1978 or 1979 Olds Cutlass Calais model that had the same shifter. The handle showed wear very easy, and the internals in the handle because they are plastic tend to break. Even regular mundane cars today have beefier shifter handles.
With my background history about Hurst, I can relate back to the very early Hurst Dual Gate that Hurst made for automatic transmissions. The first Hurst Dual Gate shifters were made for various 1962-1964 Oldsmobile and Pontiac models. The first design of the Hurst Dual Gate had a key to lock out the one side of the shifter gate. It was more of a gimmick than something that was used a lot.
The Hurst Dual Gate would become a popular factory Pontiac option in the 1967 and 1968 GTO. It was not available as an option after the 1968 GTO model. I am not sure if Oldsmobile used it. In the later G-body years, Oldsmobile did have a Hurst shifter in the Hurst Olds models.
PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows a very early picture of a Hurst Dual Gate shifter display designed for the 1962-1964 Oldsmobile and Pontiacs. George Hurst can be seen on the left and I believe that is his wife at the time on the right. If that Hurst Dual Gate display still existed today, it would be worth a fortune to a Hurst collector. The photo on the right shows an original ad for the Hurst Dual Gate featuring the all new 1967 GTO, which received the all new 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission in 1967.
It’s hard to believe that about 20 years earlier Hurst had a more superior shifter for the console-style automatic shifter than what Buick offered in the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. Even if they had made it an option from Hurst, it would have proven to be a very popular option in our cars from Buick, just like it was for Pontiac 20 years earlier! I know I would spent the extra bucks to have it in our car.
THE HURST QUARTER STICK -
At some point in the late 1980s, AVC did market a kit that included the Hurst quarter stick and a new grey powder-coated metal top plate to replace the stock top plate on the Turbo Regal console. This top plate replaced not only the top plate of the stock console, but due to its length, it also eliminated the ash tray.
I had this Hurst quarter stick installed in our personal 1987 Grand National. The PRNDD21 indication was engraved in the top plate. NOTE - The one D had the circle around it to indicate overdrive. I then added a small metal turbocharged emblem from an earlier Turbo Riviera in the area below the actual shifter on the new console plate. I can’t recall what this Hurst quarter stick kit cost.
A few years later when we got our Syclone from GMC, I had my son install the same exact Hurst quarter stick in the Syclone factory console. In this case it was a drop-in fit. He was even able to retain the original leather boot.
PHOTO 2 - The photo on the left shows the Hurst quarter stick in our 1987 Grand National. The photo on the right shows the Hurst quarter stick in our Syclone. You can clearly see that the Hurst Quarter stick in the Syclone looks factory.
On a side note, we still have not had any Syclone owner indicating they have the #0018 Syclone, which is the one we had. It was just one of two GMC used for photo shoots and magazine testing. I have a lot of original paperwork to back everything up. Somewhere I would think 0018 Syclone exists, unless it has been wrecked.
If anyone has a complete AVC Turbo Regal Hurst quarter stick set up, please contact me. I would be very interested as I would like to bring this kit back to the market place. I already have a good connection with Hurst as we handle some of their license agreements for small companies. It’s the console plate I need and directions. I need to know what modifications were made to the factory bracket under the console for the Hurst quarter stick.
NOTE - AVC was originally known as “Quality Engineering.” I am not sure what year they changed their name. Their big success came with the GNX-style dash they marketed for many years. We also had one in our Grand National. They even came out to one of our Reunion events at the air base and did installs of the GNX-style dash both days. That GNX-style dash seems like such a good bargain now.
STEPPING BACK IN TIME AT BUICK CITY -
While I was searching for something else in my files, I came across this laminated group of 6 color photos taken at the Flint plant, which I assume was where our cars were born.
PHOTO 3 - Unfortunately, the photos are not very clear, but you can see some of the Grand Nationals coming down the assembly line in the one photo. Another photo shows rear end assemblies being put together. Another photo shows several Grand Nationals being serviced with the hoods up.
NO RESERVE AUCTION AT OUR SPRING OPEN HOUSE -
Our no reserve auction is something we started doing 2-3 years ago at our annual Spring Open House. It has been a hit.
The way it works is, as long as the starting bid has been met, the item sells for the highest bid. This year we have several GNX items going up for bid. I am also going to put up the office chair I had gotten made several years ago. It was made using a real 1984 Grand National passenger’s Lear Sieglar bucket seat.
PHOTO 4 - Shows three pictures of the office chair we had made using an original passenger’s side 1984 Grand National Lear Sieglar bucket seat. The seat is almost like new. All the control adjustment knobs are intact. It has the ashtray on the back cushion. Even the leather is close to perfect. I am sure it could be used as it is or removed from the bracket and used in a car.
BREAKING NEWS - UPGRADED STEERING SHAFTS -
I just got in 3 more of the refurbished lower upgraded steering shafts, our part #7574. The price is $119.95, which includes UPS ground shipping. If you want one, you MUST email me direct - [email protected]
These are getting tougher and tougher to get.
CHRISTINA TURNS THE BIG FOUR-O THIS SUNDAY - MARCH 26th -
Christina, who many of you have come to know, turns 40 this Sunday. Last month marked her 17th anniversary with our company. That means almost half her life has been devoted to our company.
Years ago, she worked at a restaurant we used to frequent years ago and we stole her away to work for us.
As many of you can attest to, she handles each call in a cheerful manner, even if you are complaining about something.
Her recollection of our part numbers is nothing short of amazing.
She not only handles the Buick retail customers but our wholesale customers as well. Several companies have tried in vain to steal her from us.
She does not know we slipped this paragraph into this week’s Inner Circle.
Why not wish her Happy Birthday - send her an email - [email protected] or mention it when you call to place an order.
Her value can't be measured and what she means to our small company. She is not replaceable. HAPPPPPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTINA!
PENN STATE SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE -
Our granddaughter, Devyn just got accepted for the Schreyer Honors College. This is a yearly $4,500 scholarship as long as she retains a 3.4 grade average. Only 5% of the entire Penn State students are in this Honors College. She is one of them!
Some of the perks include special living quarters, smaller class sizes, and placement in research and internships. At the end of four years she has to submit a big graduation project and gets an Honors medal. I am sure with those credentials she will have many job opportunities in her chosen field of Electric Engineering.
She has made all of us quite proud. About the only thing she has not yet mastered is how to drive a manual shift car or truck. I hope to give her a few more lessons this summer in my little Ford Ranger.
CHUCK BERRY RIP -
This past weekend we lost one of the greats of rock ‘n roll, Chuck Berry, at age 90. He is also known as the “Founding Father of Rock ‘n Roll.” His style of music just exhibits so much energy, and he was known for his famous “duck-walk,” his signature move at his concerts. His music was loved by all us teenagers who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s.
When it came to rock ‘n roll, color was not a factor. Although they tried to have Pat Boone copy some of his songs for a white audience, it never caught on.
Another icon, Fats Domino at age 89 is the remaining artist from that early 1950s era of rock ‘n roll.
My wife and I were fortunate enough to see both of these icons in concerts years ago. It’s ironic that this past weekend my wife and I went to see a local group that sings and resemble Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valens. We have heard this group before and, if you shut your eyes, you can picture yourself at a one of the original artist’s concerts in the late 1950s.
HUGE URGENT NEED FOR POWERMASTER BRAKE CORES -
Right now we will issue a Letter of Credit for $125 for every complete powermaster brake unit you send us. Normally it’s $100 but because of low inventory of cores we need powermaster brake units. Why not do it now? It also helps us help others. Or, bring to our Open House in April, which saves you shipping costs.

TIP FROM KIRBAN -
Those of you that reside in the northern climates be sure to flush your brake fluid this Spring especially if you have the original powermaster brake unit. Fresh fluid is the life line to having a trouble free brake system. Or, simply place a piece of black tape over the brake light on your dash! Kidding!

1978-1988 G-Body (Including 1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal) -
POWDER-COATED BLACK REBUILT FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS
By now these cars can benefit with a fresh pair of rebuilt front brake calipers. These are 100% pressure tested, and fully assembled for smooth quiet performance.
The calipers come with all new hardware. You will need to re-use the original mounting bracket.
These are powder-coated black for a nice appearance behind the alloy wheels.
It makes no sense to buy new, bare metal calipers that are subject to rust.
This is a nice finishing touch that is a nice enhancement to the brake system. No cores are required. These fit every 1978-1988 G-Body model, including all 1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regals.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -
We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING -
Next week we will announce some of the special prices we will have on some of the large items that you can buy in advance, if you are attending our Spring Open House. These items can be
put aside for you, if you pay in advance for them.

Kidding!

Our other photos show the various options of designs.
We offer each design as a single cover. If you want to cover both seats, there is another part number for two covers.

POWDER-COATED BLACK REBUILT FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS

The calipers come with all new hardware. You will need to re-use the original mounting bracket.
