BREAKING NEWS CONCERNING OUR SPRING OPEN HOUSE -
We just got confirmation yesterday that Gbodyparts.com will be attending our Spring Open House on May 4, 2019.
Check out their website - gbodyparts.com - and to request any parts you want them to bring. Their email is - [email protected]
This will be the first time they have come to one of our events. They will have many of their latest reproduction items for the Turbo Regals on display. It’s a great opportunity to save on freight on the big items they sell.
LAST WEEK’S TURBO REGAL TRIVIA QUESTION ANSWERED –
This time we had several readers get this trivia question correct. The answer for the item that only appears once on a 1986-1987 Grand National and appears twice on the 1987 Turbo Limited is the metal ashtray attached to the backside of the front seat. The big clue was I only referenced the Grand National as some T-Types and Turbo-Ts had split or solid bench seats and I can’t remember if they also had 2 ashtrays on the back of the front seat like the Limiteds did.
No Grand National owner that I am aware of would encourage anyone to smoke in the back seat of their car as cigarette ashes lead to burn holes in that very costly pallex seat material. Actually, most cars today don’t even have ashtrays in them. A car that has been constantly smoked in today are cars many potential buyers avoid due to allergies and smells.
Speaking of smoking (a habit I never picked up), I saw an ad at a local store that said buy two cartons of a certain brand cigarette and save $1.50. Truth is saving may be instant, but in the long run the health issues that develop from a smoking habit far excel that initial $1.50 savings!
THIS WEEK’S TRIVIA QUESTION –
The trivia question this week focuses on Turbo Regals. This week’s question is a little more involved and needs a more detailed list of clues. It has two answers. So here goes:
It is a known fact that several later model GM options and features will fit the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal without any modifications. One of the most popular ones would be any of the early 1990s am/fm CD players. A simple bolt-in with a jumper harness and the radio looks factory. Another later option would be the lighted rearview mirror. A feature would be the flip-down stay-down license plate bracket that other GM cars had. The flip-down stay-down license plate bracket, since it was standard on certain GM vehicles, would be considered a feature not an option. Chevrolet had this feature on the 1994-1996 Caprices and certain year 1980s Camaros and 1980s Chevrolet sedans.
The trivia question for this week is what two features from another GM car line will fit all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. Remember I said feature, as I am almost certain these two parts were not an option, but part of a package or was standard equipment on certain GM cars.
Here are the clues: No modification is required to install either of these features. One of these features has several parts to it. One of the answers is more visible than the other. Both are interior related. The one feature has been reproduced and is available on our website. Those are the clues. The two correct answers will be revealed in next week’s Inner Circle as usual.
Remember your answer must match mine. Email me your educated guess to [email protected]
A DISCOVERY AMONG THE TURBO REGAL VIN NUMBERS I HAVE –
While placing the folders with the various Turbo Regal VIN numbers in sequential order, I made an unusual discovery. I may have mentioned it before. I have two 1987 Grand National VIN numbers in sequence! Not only that, I have a 3rd 1987 Grand National VIN that is just 3 digits earlier than the two in sequence.
I can only surmise that these three 1987 Grand Nationals that I have records for must have all been within sight of each other as they came down the assembly line in Flint, Michigan and then over to Pontiac Michigan for final assembly! Of the three Grand Nationals, I know the one is in England as that owner Ian Reeves emails me once in a while. He owns the one that the VIN is just three digits prior to the two I have in sequence.
Ian owns the Grand National with the VIN HP463131. The two Grand Nationals I have in sequence are VIN HP463134 and VIN HP463135. One of these went to Staten Island, New York and the other went to Asheboro, North Carolina. Ian from England bought his Grand National back in the fall of 1996. The New York one I sold back in fall of 2003. The last one we sold in the summer of 2004. All 3 are Grand Nationals. The New York one had 53,000 miles on it and the North Carolina one had 113,000 miles on it. If you have my book Kirban’s Guide to 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals, Ian and his friend Steve are pictured in front of YumYums on page 10.
So, check your 1987 Grand National VIN number to see by any chance you own either of the other two Grand Nationals that are in my system. The VIN numbers are HP463134 and HP463135. Both are hardtop models from what I can determine in my records. It would be cool to locate both of these cars today.
PHOTO 1 – Here is a paste up of the actual color photos I have of the VIN HP463134 that went to Asheboro, North Carolina in 2003. It sure would be nice to locate the current owner as I have more photos of this Grand National. Notice the one small photo in the bottom left corner shows a bunch of repair records that I gave the buyer back in 2004.
HERE IS ANOTHER DOCUMENTED TURBO-T WE HAVE RECORDS FOR –
We sold this gorgeous black 1987 Turbo-T back in the Spring of 2003. According to my records, it went to Indiana. I bought it out of New Jersey, one of the shorter trips I made to buy a Turbo Regal. This car had a mere 61,700 miles on it. This car has some very interesting facts. First according to my records, we had owned it 5 years earlier when it had 36,000 miles on it and sold it back then for $11,900. In 2003 with 61,300 miles we sold it for $10,900. This was before these cars started to climb in value!
Besides being black, which is a rare color on a Turbo-T, it had a spit bench seat and crank windows. No posi. The car had 100% original paint. Based on how nice this Turbo-T was back in 2003, with 100% original paint this car is probably still around.
Here is the VIN HP441198. Besides the photos we show in Photo 2, I have other photos and information on this fine example.
PHOTO 2 – The photo to the left shows the actual flyer we did on the Turbo-T. The photo to the right shows a paste up of 8 photos of this prime example. Remember, I would say over 75% of the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals we sold were really nice original cars. It did not pay me to travel as far as the Mississippi River for the low-end cars!
BACKTRACKING TO THE 2-27-2019 WEEKLY INNER CIRCLE –
In that February 27th Inner Circle issue, we discussed the variance differences with the power six logo and mentioned that the original 1986-1987 coil pack had a date sticker on the top. In the photo below we show an original date sticker. To my knowledge, this is one decal that has not been reproduced, so we recommend you save it if you need to replace the coil pack.
That same issue we talked about the 2 big Reunion Events we did at the Johnsville Airbase.
In the photo below is the publicity photo we took a few days earlier for the local newspaper to help promote the event, which raised money for the local boy scouts.
PHOTO 3 – The photo to the left shows the factory 1986-1987 coil pack date decal. The photo to the right is the publicity photo that was taken for the Reunion Event that first time at the Naval Air Warfare Center Johnsville Airbase. Our original 1987 Grand National test car is on the left and our custom 1964 GTO is on the right. Local Boy Scouts can be seen alongside our two cars. The lower photos show promotional black and white press photos of the plane, GTO and Grand National for the local newspapers.
SPEAKING OF FACTORY ORIGNAL DECALS –
Speaking of factory original decals, I came across a group of photos that I probably took almost 25 years ago of one of the very low-mileage Turbo Regals we had. I say that because the photos are of the paper decals that came on the shocks suspension parts and springs. These paper decals are long gone on 99% of the Turbo Regals today.
PHOTO 4 – The top left shows the factory decal on one of the shocks. The top right photo shows the factory decal on one of the springs, the bottom left shows the factory decal on the rear sway bar. The photo to the bottom right shows the factory decal on one of the rear trailering arms.
INTERESTING POINT ABOUT OUR ORIGINAL GRAND NATIONAL AND GTO –
As many long-time customers know, our personal Grand National ended up going to Hawaii and since Hawaii is an island, I assume it is still on the island somewhere. Our 1964 GTO I know has traded hands several times. I have no idea where it is today. Last I heard it was in New York.
A few years back I did hear something interesting about our old 1964 GTO. The owner at the time had no idea who I was. The hood on our 1964 GTO was one-of-a-kind. Years ago I had a body shop mount the 1965-67 GTO hood scoop portion into the stock 1964 GTO so the open scoop provided ram air to the tri-power. The hood looked factory. The car was featured in Popular Hot Rod and was well known in the GTO world. It always had that custom hood on it.
From what I been told, the owner of our car at the time did not like the hood and another GTO owner kept pestering him for the hood as he knew the real value of such a hood and knew it was from my car. The seller sold him my one-of-a-kind custom hood. Besides the hood, I had all the later GTO options in that car. I even had it fitted with the rare chrome 15 by 8 Ralley I wheels we had produced back then.
This year I am up as a nominee to the Pontiac Hall Of Fame. It’s my second year of being eligible. Last year was the first year and all the big names for Pontiac got in last year. I been told I have a good chance of getting in this year.
What is my point? If indeed the owner of our old 1964 GTO did sell the custom hood and removed all the incorrect 1964 GTO parts, he may have made a serious error in judgment. This is just my opinion. He may have seen more value into making the 1964 GTO 100% stock as it was in 1964 rather than keeping it the way I built it. Time will surely tell if his decision was correct. Plus, the fact our son Darrell painted the car.
MORE TURBO REGAL DOCUMENTATION –
We been getting emails from 1986-1987 Turbo Regal owners almost every day, but so far since last week we have struck out on having any information for those that have emailed me their last 6 digits of their VIN number.
If you email me just the last 6 digits of the VIN for 1986 or 1987 models only, I may have some documentation on your car - [email protected]
The price of this material will be based on what exactly what I do have. In some cases, I may even have a copy or the original Window Sticker. Depending on my memory, I may even remember when I picked up the car and exactly where it was located. If the car was bought prior to 2003 I would have information from our monthly Grand News which would detail the options and price we sold it for since I have every copy of our Grand News from 1988 thru 2002. Remember, I did most of the buying of these cars back in the 1990s and early 2000 timeframe.
You just never know. I do have records on almost every car. If you are on any of the various websites and Facebook, feel free to put the word out that we may have documentation on their Turbo Regal, if it’s one that passed thru my hands over the last 30 years. This may prove better than playing your state lottery as I may have info on your 1986-1987 Turbo Regal or GNX!
THIS IS A REAL CONFIDENCE BUILDER –
As you know I recently picked up this extremely nice original 2003 Mercedes Benz C230 coupe at the one of the auction bid lots. It appears they only made this model just a few years maybe 2002-2005 and possibly the 6-speed model for just 2002-2003. I discovered the other day inside the gas door a factory label that lists the tire pressures for the front and rear tires.
What I found interesting is on this decal it states, if you drive over 100 mph, they recommend you inflate the tires another 4 psi. It sounds like they are encouraging owners to speed! At the very least, it makes the driver feel confident the car can easily handle speeds of 100 mph and above. Not something you want to try in your Turbo Regal with its 85 mph speedometer starring you in the face. A T-Tops Turbo Regal would generate so much wind noise, it would be hard to hear the radio unless you had the weatherstrips redone and the windows adjusted!
IN CASE YOU’RE WONDERING - MORE FACTS ON THE TURBO REGALS WE’VE SOLD –
Here are a few more facts related to the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals that we bought and sold over the last 30 years or so. The lowest mileage Grand National we sold had just 700 miles on it. The lowest mileage GNX had just under 600 actual miles.
The easiest to sell T model for us was the WE4. This is perhaps because it was black and possibly because it was advertised as being lighter and quicker than a Grand National.
We had at least 4 or 5 instances where the buyer changed their mind about selling their car to me. I can’t blame them in the least as, in many cases, it probably was a tough decision.
WE HAVE MORE JEEP STEERING SHAFTS IN STOCK FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY –
See the Rare Parts section for pricing. This is the upgraded lower steering shaft that eliminates the fiber steering coupler at the steering box. The Jeep shaft has steel universal joints at both ends and is more streamlined over the stock bulky lower steering shaft that the Regals came with. I think we have 2 in stock. See Rare Parts section.
CARSMARTS RADIO IS ON THE AIR AND ON THE WEB! –
Turbo V6 enthusiast Steve Saffier (who produced “The Dennis Kirban Story” on YouTube last year) is producer and host of a new automotive radio program broadcasting live every Saturday from 11am – 12 noon on 610 ESPN radio (the old WIP 610 am for those in the area.) The show talks about different aspects of the car world and Steve’s affinity for Turbo Regals and Syclone/Typhoons often is expressed in nearly every show.
You can tune in live or livestream the show at http://www.610espn.com from anywhere in the world.

Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

LAST WEEK’S TURBO REGAL TRIVIA QUESTION ANSWERED –

The show talks about different aspects of the car world and Steve’s affinity for Turbo Regals and Syclone/Typhoons often is expressed in nearly every show.
