Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 03-13-2013
"FOCUS ON PRODUCT 1987 PRODUCT INFORMATION" BOOKLET -
In the 2-13-2013 Inner Circle one of the booklets we show is entitled, "Focus On Product - 1987 Product Information." This booklet runs 80 pages, measures 3-3/4" x 7-1/2", and covers all the 1987 Buick models.
In each case, it lists what is new for 1987 for each particular model, then the standard equipment. In the case of the Regal, it lists the Touring Packages, available equipment, and last specifications.
This handy booklet would put at the salesperson's fingertips everything they need to know to talk intelligently to a potential Regal customer.
Under "WHAT'S NEW FOR 1987," it mentions some of the following highlights related to the Turbo Regal:
T-Type model dropped - T package added
New interior trims
Exterior sport package available
This included the new grille and exterior sport package. At a quick glance, one would think the exterior sport package was not new, since all 1986 Regal T-Types did have the black exterior sport package.
You would think the new option would be the chrome package being offered on the Turbo-T. (Our car for example, has the “chrome package”).
GM used the same WE2 code for the Grand National and the same WE2 code for the T-Type LeSabre. Plus, as many of you are aware, the LeSabre sport model that year was known as the LeSabre T-Type.
PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows the cover of this "Focus On Product" booklet. The top right photo shows a two-page spread in the booklet. One page featuring the Regal for 1987 Touring Packages and what they included, and the next page shows the first page of available equipment on the 1987 Regal complete with the code for each item. In the lower right photo we show the two-page spread of the last pages regarding available equipment for the 1987 Regal as well as the Dimensions.
Since it was part of what the salespeople would use, this is one very rare booklet to find. Generally, like so many of these mini pocket booklets, at the end of the model year they simply got tossed out.
Today because of the internet, a lot of the “print format” for booklets has been discontinued by the automakers.
MARKETING/PRODUCT INFORMATION ‘85 BUICK -
This "Marketing/Product Information '85 Buick" booklet is also in my private collection and covers all the 1985 Buick models. This booklet measures 4-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has a lot more color in it.
It also talks about "Buick's Five-Year Plan." Two points of interest - they wanted to hit one million Buicks in one year and hold 11% of the total U.S. automotive market share.
Under "NEW FOR 1985," there are a few interesting tidbits. One fact I was not even aware of, only coupes were available. So, 1984 marked the end of 4-door sedans in the Regal model. Probably explains why you seldom see a 4-door Regal for any of the 1984-1987 models!
The cloth trimmed Lear Siegler Seats was introduced in the T-Type and also the powermaster brake set up. Also and this is something I have never seen a cellular telephone was available - dealer installed! Like any new electronic part I am sure this was a high dollar option and reception probably varied based on your location.
PHOTO 2 - The left photo shows the cover of this Marketing/Product Information booklet. The middle photo shows the last page in the Regal section, which features the very first Grand National poster that Buick released in 1985. The photo on the right shows the first page of the new LeSabre for 1985 section. I find it interesting that under the "NEW FOR 1985" for the LaSabre model, it lists powermaster brakes added to gas engine. This was something I was not award of prior to reading this.
To make it even more confusing, in 1985 Buick added a new model - the Somerset Regal, not to be confused with the Regal we all know today.
This same booklet also shows that the third brake light was available on three models for 1985 - the Regal Somerset, Century, and Electra/Park Avenue. It then states that it will be federally mandated for all 1986 cars. Again, I didn't know that some 1985 Buick models came with the third brake light.
The booklet also says the Regal nameplate has been Buick's best selling car since the was introduced in 1973.
Regarding the available cell phone option, it says the Buick Riviera was the first production automobile in America to offer the cellular telephone in conjunction with AT&T.
So, even I leaned some new things - the 4-door sedan Regal ceased after the 1984 model year and the new world of cell phones was first introduced in Buick cars.
PHOTO 3 - We show two pages from the Regal section in this informative booklet. The page on the left shows NASCAR Winton Cup Trophy Winner Bobby Allison with the #22 Buick Regal. The page on the right gives the highlights of the Performance features and shows the Computer Controlled Coil Ignition setup in the photo.
GM TACHOMETERS -
In the February 6, 2013 Inner Circle, we had an article about various tachometers and how many of them (even from years ago) were superior in design and format compared to the light bar format found in the 1984-1987 analog Turbo Regal dash.
In 1967, when the original muscle car era was in full bloom so to speak, Pontiac came out with a tachometer as an option, which attached to the exterior. It was mounted on the hood. I remember these quite well. This was besides the ralley dash cluster, which was another option that included an in-dash tachometer. The 1967 versions were slightly taller in height than the later ones. Buick later offered them on some of their GS models. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile never offered a factory hood tachometer as an option, from what I recall. Back then, the big seller in the aftermarket was made by Dixco.
As you can imagine when exposed to the elements, hood tachometers had a short life span unless they were garage kept.
You can go to eBay or check out any musclecar catalog and see various hood tachometers as most have been reproduced. What I show you in Photo 4 is one from my private collection that has not been reproduced. Very few muscle car owners from that era are probably not even aware this existed.
PHOTO 4 - Many years ago when we sold used and new Pontiac-GTO parts, I came across this unusual hood tachometer brand new still in the original box. We show the tachometer in the photo on the left. We show the box in the photo on the right. It's unusual because it says "AC GM The Performance Line" in the heading. It appears that AC came out with this hood tachometer, so any GM car owner could buy it at the parts counter. The other hood tachometers we mentioned all had the car make imprinted on the gauge, such as Pontiac or Buick, and the red line would be shaded in at the proper rpms depending on the engine.
This is a brand new AC hood tachometer. The shell is in primer and ready to paint to match the customer's car. Of course, what makes this interesting and super rare is the fact it has the AC logo and the absence of a red line on the dial. This is the shorter-style tachometer, meaning it would be for a GM car 1968 and up.
So, if the trivia question ever comes up… Did AC Spark Plug Division ever make hood tachometers? The answer is yes.
GM hood tachometers were only available as an option for a few short years. This was a clever idea that put the tachometer in your constant vision.
KIRBAN PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS ON YouTube -
We have been recording various segments on our products and information related to the Buick Turbo Regals, and we have posted them on YouTube.
Some segments feature products, their placements, benefits, or issues.

URGENT REQUEST FOR MASS AIR FLOW SENSORS -
We badly need original AC Delco 1986-1987 Turbo Regal mass air flow sensors as cores to have them be rebuilt. Screens can be missing but housing can't be broken or cracked.
We issue a $25 Letter of Credit for each acceptable sensor you send us. This helps us help others retain their cars keeping them original.
NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
We have several new products this week to introduce.
We recently found a source that has reproduced seat belts for the G-body cars, our Part #7479. They are GM Licensed and use the same testing procedures that GM uses. We only have them available in grey. This grey is not an exact match for the Grand National interior, but it is the only grey they have available.
1986-1987 Buick Grand National - GM LICENSED -
REPRODUCTION FRONT BUCKET GREY SEAT BELTS (4 pieces) SET
These are GM licensed, new reproduction grey seat belts for the 1986-1987 Grand National front bucket seats. These would also be suitable to use if you have a T-Type or Turbo-T with a grey interior with bucket seats.
These are a light grey in color, so they are not an exact match to the original belts. That’s why we only offer them in a full set for both front bucket seats. The part that attaches up by the roof line is slightly different than the original one, but it does have a grey cover that hides the mounting point.
The inner buckle does have the GM embossed logo similar to the original seat belts.
These are assembled and tested in the U.S.A. Seat belts meet SAE-J386 and FMVSS 209-302 specs, according to the label on the back of each seat belt. They also have the production date of the belt on the label.
The manufacturer has replicated the OEMs test procedures and equipment at their test facility. They have a “G” Force Machine, a Tilt Lock Testing Machine, Webbing Abrasion Tester, Salt Spray Tester, two Tensile Machines, and other testing equipment. All testing meets the most current FMVSS 209/302 certification.
Another nice interior restoration part.

We have also added to our product line the four versions of Tinman's Cold Air intake kits. This is a proven cold air system available for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. This is made in the U.S.A. No cutting or drilling is required and it allows you to retain your vacuum canister in the stock location. The versions we offer cover the stock MAF, the 3” LT1, the 3.5 LS1 and if you do not use a MAF.
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
TinMan COLD-AIR INTAKE KITS
The TinMan Cold-air kit is the "Original" hard pipe cold-air kit for 1986-1987' Buick Turbo Regals. It's a 4" aluminum, mandrel bent, hard pipe kit, which includes a Hi-Flow washable 4" x 9" air filter with molded in "velocity stack" neck outlet for the ultimate in airflow. The aluminum elbow has a durable powder-coated finish, available in Satin Black or Silver. High-quality rubber connections help eliminate engine vibration so as not to harm the MAF or MAT sensors.
NOTE - When ordering, be sure to order the correct Part # for the kit designed for the MAF sensor you will be using (factory stock, 3" LT1, 3.5" LS1, or no MAF at all for aftermarket ECM's), so you are shipped the correct kit.
The TinMan kits install without any cutting, drilling or extra brackets, and will even allow you to keep the fuel vapor canister in it's the stock location.
Filter inlet air temps will run within approximately 1 degree of outside temps!
The TinMan Cold-Air Kit has been flow-bench tested to flow well over 1,200 cfm!
To date, it has also gone 9.20's in the 1/4 mile at near 150 mph!
Horsepower gains average from 10 hp to as much as 30 hp+, depending on which air intake system you are replacing and level of engine build-up.
These intake kits work very well on "factory stock" as well as heavily-modified Turbo Regals.
The TinMan Cold-air kit includes all parts needed to install, attaching to the MAF sensor and running to the included washable, high-performance air filter. The kit comes complete with installation instructions.
NOTE - When ordering, you MUST specify if you want the elbow section to be powder-coated “BLACK” or “SILVER.” The long pipe is powdered-coated satin black on ALL the applications, since it is not seen under the hood once the kit is installed.

GM still has brand new grey third brake light units in stock for the G-body Regals. Even more unusual is they are grey in color, which appears to match the Grand National interior. Ironically, according to the box they come in, they are made in Spain!
1986-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
GM GREY THIRD BRAKE LIGHT
Amazing as it sounds, GM still has inventory on the original third brake light that sits on the back package shelf. These are even grey in color, which very closely resembles the original grey used on the Grand National and T-Types, which would have had a grey interior.
In many cases, the original third brake light has become faded and may even have warped if it has been exposed to extreme summer heat temperatures. Also, the light socket can become brittle and fall part internally and cause a short.
This third brake light is 100% complete and ready to install.
The third brake light became law beginning with the 1986 production cars.
NOTE - If you do not need the entire new third brake light assembly, we have various reconditioned used parts, including good light sockets with a new bulb installed. If you want more information, email me direct with an explanation of what you actually need - [email protected].
#7476 - 1986-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) - GM Grey Third Brake Light - $69.95

We also have a replacement knock sensor for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals since the GM one is no longer available. This is one of those critical sensors.
1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
KNOCK SENSOR
When this sensor fails, it will retard the timing, which cuts back on the performance of your car.
This small knock sensor is located behind the coil pack on top of the engine.
If you’re having problems with retarded timing and you know you are getting ample fuel, it’s well worth replacing yours with this knock sensor, manufactured by Wells.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected].

ALWAYS IN A BUYING POSITION WORKS -
Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected].
Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again.
